Here are some photos of Uma Thurman at the “Turnaround for Children” charity event in New York yesterday. God, she looks terrible, doesn’t she? And don’t get me wrong – I think Uma is a lovely, unique beauty, and I’ve always loved her. But she looks like she was having an off day with the bad hair, bad makeup and horrible outfit. On most people, all-black is fine. I understand a woman’s urge to wear all black, because I have that urge too, nearly every day. But for some women, the all-black look ventures into “Viet Cong” territory (me), and for yet other women, the all-black look goes straight to “The Widow” look. That’s what Uma is doing to me in these photos. She looks like The Widow Hawke. Or The Widow Balazs. Or The Widow Busson.
Maybe it would have been cute without the wrap or whatever she’s got on her arms. And minus the black hose too. But even without them, this is still basically a bad dress that does nothing for her lovely figure. The bad posture doesn’t help either. It makes me pay too much attention to the unfortunate hair.
Could it be that Uma is just having a really awful month? Or several months? A few weeks ago, Uma’s star project Motherhood debuted in the UK with a whopping $130 box office. Not 130 million. Not 130 thousand. One hundred and 30 dollars, total. This provoked a storm of articles wondering aloud what had ever happened to Uma Thurman’s career. Entertainment Weekly was one the kinder ones, asking “What should Uma Thurman do next?” They point out: “She’s currently filming the saucy film Bel Ami with Robert Pattinson, which could make her relevant again. I’d like to see her find a supporting role like she had in 1996’s The Truth About Cats & Dogs and get the female fanbase behind her. A mainstream role where she’s put-together on the outside (otherwise, we don’t buy it) and insecure on the inside. Something with subtlety — not a caricature.”
See, I kind of think she should could do well with a “caricature” role, but something reminiscent of Kill Bill. Something with action, where Uma gets to play it cool and saucy and seductive. I also agree that she should go in for more supporting roles. Yes, she’s a movie star and a good actress, but there’s no shame in playing second fiddle to someone else, especially if it’s a strong project. Oh, and she should definitely throw out this whole outfit. Please.

Still though, she can act circles around tons of other H’wood peeps, and is so lovely and smart that I can’t hate on Uma. Even if she does look like she’s at a wake.

Bad picture, she is still stunning in person and not just because she is nearly six feet tall.
Actually, I think her makeup is great; her skin is glowing, she just looks a little out of it and her windblown hair isn’t helping that impression, but it is clean and shiny. I am always a proponent of all black, and while it seems a bit somber for the occasion it is likely a result of being thrown together in haste.
I adore Uma , but you’re right that dress does nothing for her .
Uma really does have a flawless complexion. Isn’t she 40 too? She looks great.
And to be honest I rather see her dressed like this, than in some bizarre outfit with her boobs hanging out.
Rip off the chessy lace cap sleeves, redo the make up and actually give her a hairstyle (because there is none here to be seen presently-looks like she was on the way home from the gym!, and then it could be perfect-even for a widow.

I think her face and makeup are absolutely beautiful. But yeah, the outfit…not so much.
She looks like she just woke up and the outfit is way outdated. Even so she seems like a strong enough woman who knows herself and doesn’t really care about what others think so….it works. Some people “got it” and some people just don’t.
Geez. You don’t have to mourn your career yet, sweetie. It’ll be okay. You’re still vital and talented. And quite the looker.
Take a nap before anything else.
Stand up straight.
Do something with the hair.
Use or lose the wrap.
Longer or shorter hemline (for this style).
Less opaque black or lose the hose.
Snazzier shoes.

I think she looks fine ok, whatever. Uma is 50/50 on whether she glams it up. I think of her as the next Streep, so Meryl never really glams it up either.
I wish she’d find herself a good role though- she is probably the best actress out there after Ms. Streep. But she picks some godawful roles.

I agree that the outfit is bad, but even a bad outfit can’t make Uma ugly. She’s gorgeous-always and forever.

She has Kill Bill 3 coming up, maybe that will do something for her.

Did anybody watch the movie “Gattaca”? Loved that movie, though I don’t think it was a huge blockbuster by any means, and loved her in it. I’m not sure what year it was made, or how popular it was. Anybody here seen it?

She is beautiful but her hair is messy.
She’s gorgeous. She actually looks younger & more relaxed/natural than she did while she was with that creepy Swiss dude — always fully made up and smiling manically. To play photo assumption, now that that’s over, she’s probably half bummed, half relieved.
But yes, the outfit is pure 90s. Without the hose and those shoes, she could have saved it, though. But the face… there are 20 year olds who wish they were that winsome and beautiful. And she’s a wonderful actress…
I look forward to Bel Ami, even if it means subjecting myself to Sparkles.

yea i adore this woman and thinks she fabulous (always loved her since i’m nearing 6′ myself). while I don’t like her outfit, my real question is what the eff is with her wonky eye?!?!
i love wearing all black, and mostly do… but those ghastly shoes! those tights! that dress…. everything she picked looks so… ugh.
Whatever. She’s almost 40. She’s at a charity function, trying to help people at need. I don’t care if she isn’t dressed to the 9s and wearing a frock that isn’t the most elegant. She looks natural and comfortable and not trying too hard. She also doesn’t look like she’s on drugs, which she has in the past. So I say, Good for her!
I don’t like her posture, hair, makeup or hose, but I do like the dress and her skin. Maybe if she had worn different shoes as well, it would’ve worked better. She looks depressed, so Widow seems to fit.
She has probably had botox and developed paris hilton-esque wonky bung eye.
