Crystal Bowersox: “Up to the Mountain”
One of the most lackluster seasons of “American Idol” is almost at the finish line. Last night, the final two contestants, Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze, took the stage one last time and asked American viewers for their votes. The winner will be announced tomorrow night at the very end of a two-hour finale that is sure to be packed full of cheese, special guests and product placements. If there’s anyone still watching, the big question is, who will walk away with the title of American Idol?
Full disclosure: I stopped watching about four weeks ago. I just couldn’t stand it anymore – Tim Urban stinking up the stage, Ellen Degeneres refusing to say anything negative about any of the performers; Simon Cowell mentally checking out since Hollywood week; Ryan Seacrest acting even more obnoxious than ever, and 12 mostly mediocre contestants who seemed to crumple under the pressure of performing on live TV every week. But if you forced me to pick a winner, I’d have to give it to “MamaSox,” who has performed consistently all season. Lee is a nice kid and all, but to quote Randy Jackson, he’s pitchy, dawg.
Both Crystal and Lee had to perform three songs each – one they chose, one the show’s producer’s chose for them, and the song that will become their first single should they become the Idol. Weirdly, both contestants will be doing covers of other artists’ songs as their single instead of an original song. Looks like judge/songwriter Kara DioGuardi didn’t get another chance to write something horrible this year. Anyway, Lee chose U2’s “Beautiful Day” as his single, and let me tell you, he is no Bono. His version was flat, and his performance was snooze inducing. The violin players playing behind him were more interesting to watch then he was. Sorry, Lee fans. That kid is a dud and I’ve seen singers in local bars with more charisma. Crystal performed “Up to the Mountain,” a lovely acoustic number originally recorded by Patty Griffin. Not only was she good, but she proved an important point: if you’re going to cover a song, it’s better to choose a more obscure one that isn’t so strongly identified with its original singer.
It seemed pretty obvious to me that Crystal is the superior singer and performer. But hey, I’m still getting over Adam Lambert’s loss to plain vanilla cookie Kris Allen last year. So, what say you, viewers? Who will win?
Lee Dewyze sings “Beautiful Day”
Yeah, I think I stopped watching about five weeks ago as well. I turned it on last night only because there was absolutely nothing else on and I was near the television. I was surprised at how blah and boring all six performances were. No drama, no tension. Seemed odd. Anybody remember when (I think??) Bo Bice came out and did an acapella song on the (again, I think??) final two show of his season? It was awesome, actually – just the sheer drama of it.
Crystal definitely is the better singer and better performer. But, it depends on who all the ‘tweens vote for – probably the guy.
I stopped watching after the Sanjaya year…I’ve followed a bit this year, and I just really, really hope Crystal wins.. If just for the sheer fact that she isn’t the preceived “look” that usually wins. She has an amazing voice.. I couldn’t even make it through the other dudes song.. BORING!!!
AI lost its taste long ago!
But i pray Lee Dewyze wins.
I voted for Lee like a MILLION times last night.
my money’s on crystal.
Team Lee. Crystal is good, but Lee is much better, no question.
My vote is for Lee…I got turned off on Crystal recently. I saw on dialidol that Lee is the clear victor according to their equipment….
*MSat* I agree with everything in this post except I would like Lee to win. Bowersox is starting to bug me…she sounds like Joplin and feeds off of that…it’s cool at first, I mean, really good but starting to get sick of her voice. Either way, it’s time for AI to shut it down….zzzzzzzzzzz.
I like Crystal. I find Lee very boring, no personality. Neither one of them are fantastic. I think they let all the really great singers go early on. This season has sucked.
They both are talented, but if it’s based on last night’s show, Crystal will win. She really nailed it.
theyre all lame, i just wanna see Christina Aguilera perform. 🙂
Don’t watch, but if I did watch, I wouldn’t watch because of her hair. Gross.
Those dreadlocks need to go. Her hair looks dirty and probably smells. Start brushing your teeth too. If you’re going to be an American Idol, you not only have to have the voice, you need to look presentable…
FFS, take a bath Crystal, you just look stank….
Team Lee. Crystal is an arrogant drama queen; and if I want to hear Janis or Melissa I’ll just put on my ipod and hear the job done properly.
WAit- we get PAULA tonight!!!! that has to be worth the price of admission.
You hit the nail on the head with every point. stopped watching weeks ago, tuned in last night, could not believe the mediocrity- and I am a Crystal fan. I remember the Kelly/Justin years and the Ruben/Aiken years (the last time I ever watched Idol) those finales- their voices, their song choices left me weeping and adoring them- especially Studturd and Gayken.
Simon is brilliant to cash out now.
Lee deserves to win, he has consistantly improved with each week and I really like watching him sing. He seems so attached to his songs. Crystal is really good too, I thought it was completely unfair that they made Lee sing that U2 song last night, who picked that for him? Crystal’s “recording” song was much better suited for her vocal range.
i keep hearing people say crystal is arrogant or something. where does this come from?
I don’t have TV so I’m only going on snippets from youtube, of her singing. Was there an interview or something she did?
Granted I’m not a fan of her hair or teeth, but I’m not gonna judge her based on her appearance. Maybe she seems arrogant because she has those tiny eyes that squint up when she smiles?
Where does this come from?
I have heard too many singers that sound exactly like Mr. Formula Lee. I wouldn’t buy any of his music. Crystal has her some wild blues, soul and gospel and I would definitely give her music a listen to, maybe buy, but not sure where she would fit in the radio world of Ke$creecha, Gag-a and Beaver. Maybe on NPR “All Things Considered”? Simon could help I am sure. He has some mad love for MamaSox.
god she looks dirty. and so does her kid.
Stop EASEUS and run chkdsk /f on the problem drive. Then try EASEUS again.
