This may not be of any interest, but we’ve been doing a lot of royal coverage lately, and I found this piece of news fascinating. Buckingham Palace released their account information to the general public a few days ago. You see, the Queen and her family (minus Prince Charles – I’ll get to him in a minute) are funded by the British taxpayers, and the taxpayers like to know just how much they’re spending on the Queen’s corgis, hats and whatever Prince Edward needs to get him through the night. This year’s total expenditures: £38.2 million (roughly $58 million) for fiscal year 2009-2010. Sounds like a lot, right? It was actually a 7.9% drop, which was accounted for by some royal belt-tightening, as well as the Queen deigning to pull some £6.5 million from her own private account. It still sounds like a lot though – until you do some figuring and realize that when all is said and done, the royals cost each and every single British citizen 94 cents. Less than a dollar per citizen for the royal family! That’s kind of a bargain.
The Queen and the Royal Family cost the taxpayer 62p per person last year – a drop of 7p, Buckingham Palace accounts showed. The total cost of keeping the monarchy decreased by £3.3 million (7.9 per cent) to £38.2 million during the 2009-10 financial year.
A spokesman said the fall equated to a drop in real terms of 12.2 per cent and was mainly due to a reduction in commercial charter flights and a refund of lease rentals from the Queen’s helicopter, which was replaced last year.
Palace accounts also showed that the Queen dipped into a reserve fund to boost her Civil List by £6.5 million in 2009. This is the highest amount ever drawn from the reserve, which comes from surplus Civil List money accumulated in the 1990s.
Sir Alan Reid, Keeper of the Privy Purse, said: “The Royal Household is acutely aware of the difficult economic climate and took early action to reduce its Civil List expenditure by 2.5 per cent in real terms in 2009. We are implementing a headcount freeze and reviewing every vacancy to see if we can avoid replacement. Property services funding will be reduced by £0.5 million this year.”
“Work will continue on assessing the condition of the Estate, but it is acknowledged that the necessary cuts in public expenditure will have an impact on the backlog of essential maintenance which it is hoped can be addressed in the longer term. In the meantime, the Household is continuing to pursue opportunities to reduce costs and generate income from the Estate’s assets, including commercial lettings and management charges.”
The total cost of the Queen’s Civil List – which pays for the running of the Royal Household including staff salaries – was £14.2 million in 2009, up £300,000. It was made up of £7.9 million from the Government and £6.5 million from the reserve.
If the Queen continues drawing on the reserve at the current rate, she is expected to run out of funds by the start of 2012 – the year of her Diamond Jubilee. The current deal for the Civil List – which gives the Queen £7.9 million a year – was agreed by then prime minister Sir John Major in 1990.
It had been thought the Queen would request an increase but Chancellor George Osborne announced as part of his Budget last month that it will remain frozen at £7.9 million for the coming year. Mr Osborne said the Queen had given her full agreement to the decision to freeze the sum. He added that “a new means of consolidated support” would be proposed at a later date.

Oh, I was going to mention Prince Charles – he doesn’t get any money from the “the taxpayers” – at least, not for his general upkeep. Charles has his own income from the Duke of Cornwall estate (it’s one of his titles). Through that, he owns extensive property and farms and rentals and his own line of organic food. The Duchy of Cornwall brings in millions of dollars, for real. Now, one thing that I don’t believe is figured into all of this accounting is security – I think there’s a secondary accounting chart for the guards and detectives and personal security various royals get. And that gets very expensive.
I would totally give a dollar to have a little queen. I want my dollar to go towards hats. Or corgis. Or jewel polish. I’ll let the Queen decide!

She’s been a class act as head of state for almost 60 years. The Brits should be very proud of her!
$38 million is nothing compared to the amount of tourism revenue that London gains from visitors that want to see the palace and the queen. Abolishing the monarchy will lose them money in both the short and long-term. Although the queen does not have any actually power, she has always been a voice of compassion and reason during difficult times. Sometimes that is a great thing for a country to have.
97 cents.
does not sound that bad to me. I’d rather pay that then all the taxes we pay in the US.
She has really endured.
I’d give her 97 cents!
That is totally a bargain! I would also gladly pay a dollar a year just to enjoy some of the stories.
I love your article….very well written. I like reading about Her Majesty and all the scrapes her children have gotten into. Does anyone remember the heyday of Princess Margaret? That being said, Americans don’t pay obesience (bow or pay taxes to the British Kingdom). Americans said thanks but no thanks and watch from here while the citizens of the UK pay out the behind to keep up this bunch.
I hate royalty. The whole concept is stupid. I cant believe it still goes on in this modern age.
Ok, I’m annoyed because I’m a Commonwealth citizen (Canadian) and apparently we pay $1.53 to keep the Queen, Governor General and lieutenant governors in power here in the great white north. WTF? www2.macleans.ca/2009/07/14/queen-costs-us-more-than-the-brits-pay
God save the Queen!! (Or we’ll be lumped with King Charlie).
I wonder how much it costs each US citizen to have a president, though?
@Ogechi ITA, and that’s the main reason they’ll never get rid of the monarchy. It’s a HUGE tourism money maker. Not to mention all the money it makes for the tabloids in britian.
@strawberry From what I read from that article (and a couple others like it last year), the problem so much isn’t that the queen is more expensive-but that the LG and the GG are spending like crazy. Maybe they need to take a budget class as well.
She rocked out the film studio my boyfriend works at yesterday in Toronto. Apparently she was super tiny and adorable.
I heart the Queen and love that she’s our figurehead. Prince Charles on the other hand… he can go.

Brits pay higher tax rates than we do, and residents have to deal with local councils whose intrusive enforcement of nanny state regulations makes college freshmen dorms seem free by comparison.
She’s at a wave pool today because it is SWELTERING up here!!!! In Canada!!!!! Where it’s not always winter.
I love that she got a Blackberry. Who’s going to explain it all to her? And who texts the Queen?
@ Strawberry, another Canadian here. I HATE any of my money going to the Governor General’s position, especially that separatist b***h that’s in the position now. I despise that woman.
The Queen seems like a real bargin when compared to those Twilight Kids..
Seriously, I’m Canadian and I LOVE that we have a Queen and Governor General. I think it’s healthy to have a separation of ceremonial and political powers. Legislators should not be ribbon cutters! I love Michaelle Jean, I think she’s eloquent and graceful and committed to arts and culture everything a Governor General should be. Also, can you imagine Stephen Harper making speeches about arts and immigrant dreams?? Barfinmymouth.
I’d guess the President comes not as cheaply for US taxpayers.
I think the president’s salary is only about $400,000 a year. Of course, that doesn’t pay for all his security, the White House, staff, travel expenses and such.
I find this woman creepy. I mean how old is she really? Seems like she has been around forever, but she does’nt age.
All hail and pay your taxes to the queen, she needs a new top hat.
She may cost us sixty-something pence per year, but what about all the other riches they have ? The income from owning land ? The works of art, the buildings, the jewellery, the cars, all that ? They’re going to live on that post-2012, to top up the millions we’re already giving them, and there’ll be no mention that we paid for that over the last 200 years.
I’m with gabs, I can’t believe we’re in the 21st century, and we have a monarchy. It’s embarrassing, and insulting to believe that the only reason people would come to Britain is because we have a royal family.
OK, republican rant over…
We americans have 10 BILLION of our dollars a YEAR given to Israel thanks to the APEC lobby without our consent.(But we’re giving Obama a hard time over the budget he made for the oil spill O_o) What a contradiction we’ve become, our four fathers rebelled against britian for this very reason. Honestly 97 cents to the Queen of England is not bad at all. I would so LOVE it if I knew where my money was going and I wish I could choose where my taxes go. It just doesn’t sit well with me knowing that a dollar I give to my government doesn’t come back to me but goes to manufacture a bullet that will most likely to be taking a life.
I am a Canadian and I had no idea that we gave money to support the the Queen. I am also glad to have a Governor General, if only Michaelle Jean could represent us instead of that moron Stephen Harper. He can’t even get a sentence out without saying um. It’s horribly embarassing!
At least he didnt confuse the queen for Queen elizebeth the first! I wanted to hide under a rock I was so ashamed to be American right then and there. I was like:
Oooooooh M/F!!! Did he just say what I think I heard! OMFG!!! HE DID!!! OMG this guy represents us…WE VOTED TWISE FOR THIS GUY!
Then he gets a shoe thrown at him…
Bargain!! I think the return on investment the Brits get from their royalty is fair one.
I’m a kiwi and don’t particularly care for the Queen as a head of state or paying for her and I don’t think of anyone outside of Britain as her subjects but I have nothing against her either and her family’s a bit of fun every now and again 🙂
I’ll give her $5.00 if it goes to the corgis!!!! i can’t wait to get my own one day-soon hopefully.

This misconception that the British pay more in taxes is complete BS and as for the bit about the nanny states intrusive enforcement of regulations -that statement is just bizzare!
Has anyone realised just how much the US government is watching and monitoring its citizens???
WAYYY more than the British ever have or ever will-there hasnt up till now even been an ID system because it was deemed to intrusive!!
As for the Queen-she has given a lifetime of service and duty to the country and is an amazing deal…. incidentally the civil list is relatively small-I myself have no problem with the immediate royal family getting an allowance-its all the hangers on I cant stand-Sarah Ferguson etc.
“This misconception that the British pay more in taxes is complete BS”
Oh?
Statistics from the CBO show that the poorest quintile in the UK paid 36.5% of their income in tax, whilst the richest fifth actually paid less – 35.5%. Contrast that with the US, where the poorest fifth paid an average of 4.3% of their income in federal taxes whilst the richest fifth paid 25.5%. Even when other types of taxes are considered, British residents are taxed more heavily and regressive tax rates hit the poor especially hard.
I think what someone was trying to point out to Lisa was that the British don’t just pay an extra .97 cents and that’s it but that they also pay other taxes.
All that to say, ALL countries have problems.
I seriously don’t know how anyone can like Michaelle Jean. She’s a separatist hypocrite and I HATE the fact she “represents” Canada. Elitist smug b***h. She doesn’t do anything but spend a fortune of our tax dollars flying around and showing up at stuff. This from a woman that was supporting the separation of Quebec.
I love the Queen. She’s so classy and she’s always dressed well.
I wish I lived in England.
Ponytail – Hate to break it to you, but Royalty IS the main tourist draw for the UK. Most folks come to visit London and see the Royal palace. Compare that to how many tourists you get other UK cities. Right..

Hmmm, that nanny state has universal healthcare. I’d gladly take that over our crappy system in the US. While you’re at it, let’s throw in the extended Maternity leave and 6 weeks of vacation that France has!
I don’t think the citizens should have to pay a penny to these people. I think the monarchy, with all of their assets, should at the very least be self-supporting, if not giving back to their subjects. Ridiculous. I’d be super-pissed if I were one of her subjects.
Less than a dollar per citizen for the royal family! That’s kind of a bargain.
Not if you’re a republican Kaiser dear 😉
As an aside, I have bought the Duchy range of foods as they’re very nice and we live in a free-market economy. Prince Charles gets plenty of stick (as he should, but for more than him just catting around on his wife) but the Prince’s Trust does do amazing work and it leaves a fine legacy of work.
Also, I believe he won’t be known as King Charles (they had a habit of having their heads lopped off) – I think he’s going for the next Edward in the list.
i’d rather be paying my 62p to get the government out of debt and kick the queen out of buckingham palace and make her live in the conditions that pensioners in this contry (that have worked all there lives to fund her i might add) have to live in!!!!!!!!!!
I would totally give a dollar to have a little queen.

That statement made me laugh really hard, Kaiser, because my mind went to strange places.
@Paula – I’ve no idea what the CBO is, bit I’m in a middle income bracket and don’t pay 35% tax. As someone else pointed out, I can also get any healthcare I need without paying a penny which is rather nice too!
And I’d pay a whole pound for Her Maj if I had to! Much prefer a sweet if pointless old lady as my Head of State to some grimy politician!*
*Not suggesting that any politician in particular is grimy, but that they all are 😉
HEY! Those pics were taken steps away from where I work at RIM! It was great seeing her…but I don’t care much for monarchies.
They should be dismantled 🙂
Thanks for the great write-up Kaiser. I always loved the Queen Mum myself. We had the same B/D of August the 4th. I also was named Elizabeth, however, her name was Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Boyes-Lyon which I think is much prettier. The World lost a extrordinairly wonderful, captivating and beloved human being when she died 03/30/02 at the age of 101. She is missed by many.
Love Elizabeth
Hurrah for Queenie Dearest. Speaking as a Brit I don’t mind paying a couple of pence for her and the comedy stylings of Prince Phil. I know some are republicans but not me- a bit of pomp and circumstance is a lovely thing.
