I was glancing through some new photos, and at the same time, I saw photos of Michael Douglas and Robert Redford, on two separate continents, separated by a deep void of experience, both looking like hell. But it’s a strange thing, this “getting older” stuff. Michael is 66 years old, and had a facelift several years ago that is now falling apart because of chemo, amongst other things. Robert Redford, on the other hand, is 74 years old, and looks every single year, and yet somehow… he looks extremely healthy and rugged, even manly. Yes, his skin looks like leather. Yes, that’s a horrible f-cking dye job. But I would still hit it.
Which brings me to my question – even though Redford looks like a beautiful kind of aged massacre, shouldn’t we love him more for being all natural? It’s the Meryl Streep thing, the Helen Mirren. Even if your skin isn’t the best, and you have wrinkles up the wazoo (I bet Redford’s wazoo looks leathery too), I appreciate that your face moves and that you don’t look like you swapped heads with an alien.
Anyway, these are new photos of Redford today in Paris, where he will be receiving the Knight in Order of Honor at the Elysee Palace, from President Sarkozy. And the Michael Douglas photos are from today as well – Michael was out and about in NYC. Michael really, really looks bad. I’m not trying to be all Star Magazine, but I don’t think he’s doing as well as all of the happy, optimistic statements from his people.

Redfords hair is ridiculous.
Do you honestly think he is all natural?
That hair can’t be real Rob has so much of it for a 74 year old, I think that’s what is keeping him from looking as old as most 74 year olds.
Poor Michael, he looks washed out. Redford’s hair matches his eyebrows so I give him a pass, I don’t think he’s ever changed his hair style. Love em both.
The fact that RR even still HAS hair is good. That guy still has it.
actually redford’s hair is likely natural. my dad was a redhead, and he had the same color. it ages dark, then to a light starwberry, before it goes grey.
And that leather face thing -dad had that too. Comes from lifetime of work or play in the sun for a fair skinned redhead.
He makes me miss my dad. 🙂
I don’t think Redford looks like hell at all. I think he looks damn good for his age. I’d still do him. Hard.
MOSTLY natural. he did have a face lift a few years back and he was awfully tight-faced and “pulled back”.
looks like it’s settled, and he hasn’t done much since. what he HASN’T done is altered his features, a la nose job, etc…
I think he looks great.
and poor Michael Douglas… 🙁
He looks like he should at that age and I love him for it. When is he going to call Betty White she’d still hit it??
Jaxx–When you finish and after light lunch and a nap, he’ll be ready for me that afternoon!
I don’t think his hair is dyed. My grandmother was a strawberry blonde when she was younger, and when she was in her 70s her hair was exactly that color.
I’ve loved Robert Redford forever! I’ve always liked Michael Douglas, and he does look bad. I’ve been through chemo and radiation, and it’s no picnic.
When Redford did a movie w/Brad Pitt (Spy Game?) it was said he finally got some ‘work’ done so he wouldn’t look TOO elderly next to his younger co-star.
But 74? He’s clearly had some facial surgery now, but the effect is nice & relatively subtle compared to the tragic work on M Douglas. The latter is really sad, especially if you’ve seen Douglas in ‘Wonder Boys’ (he explored & used his aging beautifully – good movie, btw, w/Robert Downey Jr & a nice performance by Katie Holmes).
edit: & despite the overdone hair, imo Redford doesn’t look like ‘hell’ – tho by Hollywood standards I’m sure he does.
Redford has had his eyelids done in the past – those veneers aren’t doing him any favors though. Also, the white sideburns just make it look like he’s dyeing his hair, even if he isn’t. He looks okay for his age.
Chemo has taken a real toll on Michael Douglas, poor guy. I think we should put a moritorium on comments about his appearance.
Redfords had work done….look in the archives. Now for al natural….maybe Al Pacino.
Redford is HOT,I too would still hit that.
Michael looks so bad, I was shocked when I saw him. I agree Kaiser, I dont think he looks as good as his people are trying to make him out to be.
I will keep him in my prayers!
I don’t think Michael Douglas looks that badly, considering what his body is going through. My brother and my uncle both have cancer and have done/ are doing chemo. It makes the healthiest person look like they’re dying – even when they’re not. My brother, who was in incredible shape, lost 65 pounds on chemo. He’s 6’5 and weighed only 135 pounds. It was scary. He’s 46 and looked around 60 or so.
Chemo makes everyone look worse than they might really be.
Some of you have made good arguments that Redford’s hair color might actually be real. I really thought it was a bad dye job, but now I’m not so sure. Either way, like someone said, the gray sideburns are not working. I know he did get some work done a few years back, but you can’t tell now. He looks his age. I respect the fact that he’s not trying to still look like a heartthrob and is essentially aging naturally. I saw him directing “The Conspirator” here in Savannah last fall, and he’s still every bit as charismatic as he ever was.
Man, that chemo has done a number on poor Michael Douglas. How sad. I hope it worked and got rid of the cancer! I saw his interview on Letterman when he announced the diagnosis. He still looked fine then and that wasn’t that long ago. That is some strong stuff. May he recover pronto!
Excuse me, but both gentlemen are talented and hot. Getting older is natural…hope my hubby looks as good as Redford at 74.
Robert Redford looks good.he’s worked and played outdoors his whole life.As far as Micheal Douglas goes be kind chemo is pure hell people.
I was scrolling thru the post looking for the photo of Robert Redford looking like hell LOL. I don’t get how he looks like hell.
For someone going thru chemo, I think MD looks decent, even better than decent.
Michael D has the same look my dad had when he was dying of cancer. It made a 60yr old man look like he was 90. So sad, I know exactly what he and his family are going through. It’s torture to watch a loved one go through that suffering. I hope he gets well.
You must have deleted the photos of RR looking like hell because the only ones I saw were of him looking great. Hope MD can recover soon.
Brad Pitt circa 2050. 🙁
Everybody ages (unless they die). Lainey especially likes to mock aging celebs that are no longer looking their best. (Unless they’re really famous, then she sucks up to them.)
He did get a facelift in the 90’s. It’s just settled out and he doesn’t look like a burn victim like Burt Reynolds.
Why does he look like hell? He looks just like my grandfather did in his 70’s as well.
If that’s Hell, Hell looks damn good.
This is a ridiculous story. Robert doesn’t look like hell. He looks like a normal 74 year old although his hair looks bad. Of course Michael looks horrible. He just had 2 months of chemo. Nobody would look fresh as a daisy after that.
I have a neighbour, 76 years old and a redhead, his hair looks just like Redfords and there is no way this old farmer I know would dye his hair. Also, Redford had a facelift years ago, at least 10 and it looked awful. Maybe he decided a second time wouldn’t be worth it.
Chemo does make people look like hell, luckily, I do not know from experience. I know a man who ran miles every single day, but directly after the work, he was a kitten. 10-point match, though–what a miracle!
***
I don`t think he looks like hell, but I do think Newman got the better aging genes.
I say toupee, but I also say he looks pretty good.
Even if there weren’t the chemo thing, Robert Redford would look better than Michael Dougles because he always did. Ever see the episode of the Twilight Zone where he plays death? Man, that guy always has been handsome.
Seems like RR had something done years ago,I don’t remember how long. He’s still cute now tho, you either age or you die, not many options in this life.
Michael Douglas gets huge points just for being out and about though. Chemo is just so hard on a person.
Cancer treatments…some people who have been through it refuse to do it again. The treatments can get to be as bad as the disease. Just a thought.
Christopher Hitchens was recently diagnosed with stage 4 esophogeal cancer.
If anyone has time, would you send both MD and CH some positive energy? I hate to see either of them go.
Uh idiot he’d worked with Pitt once before Spy Game and directed the movie as well. that movie would be 1992’s A River Runs Through It. Redford has always looked good for his age even 10/15 years younger same with his beloved co-star Paul Newman before cancer took a toll on his looks the last 2 years of his life. so what if he had some minor work done he’s been in the industry for more than 50 years
Looking like hell??!!! He is an elderly man! He is lucky to still being alive, who cares how he looks?
p.s. That pic of Michael Douglas was totally unnecessary, I really didn’t need to see that :´(
Redford had work done and looked ridiculous for years afterward…he had a modified Kenny Rogers thing going on.
Michael…he was great back in his Streets of San Fran days…loved his girlfriend back then…can’t remember her name, she was older than he was, very bawdy and fun-loving, a brunette with an uber sexy deep voice, and a Mike Douglas regular. Funny, she must be a little old lady now.
Yeah, I’m digging Robert Redford. Of course, I keep flashing back to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or The Sting, but hell, he still looks good.
#36: Michael’s girlfriend was named Brenda Vaccaro.
@ jj, thanks.
Brenda Vaccaro…now that’s a blast from the past!
Redford had an eye job years ago
The Sun Dance kid looks awesome for 74!
Of course MD looks really really bad, he’s sick with cancer.
Give the guy a break.
I agree, it is awfully harsh to talk about how bad Michael Douglas looks when he is ill.
I don’t think MD looks that bad. Tired and pale, maybe, but his wrinkles are no worse than any other regular Joe his age.
Joan Rivers called out Redford and said he not only had a facelift but that it was baaaaaad.
Joan oughtta know. I think he looks bad and worked over. But maybe he is pretty on the inside or something. But who cares with his unbeatable filmography and relentless promotion of movies outside the Hollywood machine. Plasticford gets a pass.
You know who was gorgeous from cradle to grave with no plastic interference?
His buddy Paul Newman. That guy was the real deal inside and out, miss him much.
@ Rhonyc
2 funny
He looked fine when he had the cancer…. not so much when he has had the chemo. I think he needs our love and support I wish I had not seen this picture of him, nor that one that Star magazine ran with his wife rushing back to be with him before he dies…Michael Douglas is brave and talented. Sure made some mistakes, but he has given us some tremendous entertainment. Stay strong Michael D. There are a lot of us rooting for you. Just don’t take any more chemo, it does you in faster than the cancer.
Brenda Vacarro – wasn’t she in the movie with Pacino about Kevorkian?
Plenty of older men still have tons of hair as they get older, how stupid to think that ALL men lose ALL of their hair as they get older! Good grief!
My father is in his 70’s now and he has a great head of hair (that is not 100% grey either and he has dark brown hair, and NO he does not dye it). My grandfathers also had great heads of hair.
RR looks great for his age.
And yes, poor MD 🙁 .
I would hit (Robert) hard. Always loved him and always will.
My heart goes out to Michael D.
Brenda Vaccaro was in Midnight Cowboy… I think.
I love the episode of The Twilight Zone where he plays Death. (A very, very hot Death.)
Putting up Michael Douglas, or anyone going through chemo, next to Robert Redford seems awfully unfair to me. I wish you hadn’t taken what appears to be very much a low road under the circumstances.
@Maddy – I was going to say the exact same thing. My dad was sick for almost 6 years, the chemo and radiation take their toll on everyone’s appearance. For us, the chemo took a toll on him inside and out, but it did what it was supposed to do and he bounced back in both health and appearance (for a while anyway). People would look a little horrified sometimes when we were out and about and he looked like hell (its annoying but I understand its disconcerting to see someone looking like a walking skeleton). But I didn’t give a shit because the fact he was walking at all meant he was still fighting and that was a win. So I think everyone should go easy and let him heal…but part of me says “good on you MD for keeping on keepin on, let everyone see you fight.” My heart really goes out to his family. Dealing with cancer is so full of ups and downs way beyond the toll on your looks….I don’t think he gives a shit about it.
Robert REdford looks like Anthony Rapp.
Do you really have to put the picture of the cancer stricken Michael for the purpose of comparing him to RR? I mean, c’mon. Chemo’s a bitch.
If pics of MD continue to be published while he is this ill, the more he will be hounded and exploited. I think we need to let people in the public eye alone when they are ill, grieving or more than regularly crazy. It is just too intrusive.
Ugh. I’ve never understood why so many people like Redford. I don’t think he is-or ever was-especially handsome. And age has not helped him much.
I think Michael Douglas looks bad, but he NEEDS to be optimistic, because he’s fighting, and you can’t tell him: oh you look awful today, it would be horrible.
md looks really really old. rr…well he’s always gonna be a hautie imo.
It is cruel & senseless to debate someone’s handsomeness when they are undergoing chemo/radiation treatments to save their life.
Nancyman–I’ll back that plan!!
robert redford is the most hansome man on this earth no one will ever take his place i just love him to bits and all your comments about him and his hair strawberry blond his hair is natural sexy blond . a you lot out there take a look at your own hair hey robert will you do another movie with babara the way we were 2 many thanks alison
