I wasn’t going to do this story, but we just got the photos, and why not? We haven’t had a Kate Middleton story in a few days. These are photos of Kate Wednesday night in London. It was her first “royal duty” as a princess-to-be… and the occasion was a charity event for the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, of which Prince William is a patron. She didn’t get to walk arm-in-arm with her love though – he was in Switzerland with Becks, trying to get the World Cup to come to London. So Kate had to do the whole thing alone. So what did the charity even consist of? Perhaps some glad-handing, some shilling on behalf of a good cause? Not really. Kate got to sit down and watch a Christmas concert, and then she stood around drinking and talking to friends afterwards. And that’s her “royal duty”!
Kate Middleton has kept quite the low profile since she and Prince William announced their engagement. But on Wednesday night, she finally stepped out in public for her first social event in more than two weeks.
And she did it in perfect, princess-to-be style.
On a bitterly cold London evening, Middleton, 28, attended the annual Christmas carol concert to benefit a charity dear to her fiancé’s heart, the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund. (Her betrothed, meanwhile, was in Switzerland with David Beckham in the hopes of landing Britain a bid to host the World Cup in 2018.)
In 2009, William, 28, became a patron of the memorial fund, which helps set up schools in Uganda. It also happens to be the only philanthropy in which he and his brother, Prince Harry, are jointly involved. The charity is named for a young classmate of the princes who died in a car crash.
At the event on Wednesday night, a royal protection officer driving a Range Rover dropped Middleton off at the door of St. Luke’s Church in Chelsea, thwarting efforts by photographers to get a clear shot of the royal fiancée.
By the end of the evening, she was seen enjoying the company – and attention – of many of the couple’s friends in the foyer of the church, several of whom had not seen her since the big announcement. Members of the royal household and a friend accompanied Middleton as well, according to observers.
She was one of the last to leave, after chatting in the foyer of the church for more than an hour after the service. A fellow guest tells PEOPLE, “She was on top form. She looked radiant and was charming everyone.”
Wearing a black overcoat, she then dashed out through a flurry of snowflakes to the waiting four-wheel drive SUV.
“It’s incredible how things have changed,” one witness tells PEOPLE. “Last year she left [this event] in a taxi. This time she had a press officer and a specially-protected Range Rover.”
[From People]
Well, she’s as good as a princess now – she’s got her Range Rover and her bodyguard and her own coterie of protectors and sycophants. See? This is what she was patiently waiting for all of these years. But still, it’s not all roses – The Daily Mail takes her task for wearing the same old pair of boots that she’s been wearing for years. Which brings me to an interesting thought: when Kate gets married, she will definitely have a clothing allowance. The question is: How much will the clothing allowance be, and where will it come from? Diana got her clothing allowance from her husband (and the Duchy of Cornwall, the profit-center of the Prince of Wales). So, will Prince Charles be paying for Kate’s clothing allowance? Will the Queen? That one is doubtful. It will probably be either William, from his own money (he inherited a great deal from his mother), or from Charles.
One last thing – The Enquirer had a hilarious gossip item about William being such a mummy’s boy that he asked Kate to wear his mother’s wedding gown for their wedding. Sigh… I really hope that didn’t happen.
Glad they got a snap of the ring 😉
Jolly good, carry on Kate…er, Catherine.
Just absolutely not to Wills’ (supposed) request that she don his mother’s wedding dress.
May Diana rest in peace but I was not a fan of her dress! I hope Kate goes for something way more practical to walk in!
It’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it. Apparently. And I don’t think William would have asked her to wear Diana’s gown. He’s a guy, but he’s not stupid.
Zzzzzzzzzz! I am already bored with her.
Wow, hard working Katie. Her third charity event in…what…9 years. Don’t knock yourself out, Katie. Be careful what you wished for. You’re about to get it.
Some grumblings in the British press (make of it what you will) about the wedding starting to look like a Diana memorial service. The ring, William supposedly asking Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer to speak about his sister, wearing Diana’s dress (which, quite frankly, I don’t believe-not even William is that stupid). I’m all for William honoring his mother after she was so cruelly taken from him and his brother. I hope he doesn’t go overboard. Perhaps there will be three people in this marriage as well.
Can’t wait to see the Kate fashion shows that are coming! She’s thin and tall and has wonderful taste, so it will be fun to watch her.
Henry van Straubenzee was a close friend of both Kate and William, and she has attended many events for the charity in the past, so this can hardly be called a “royal duty.” She would have gone anyway.
The Palace has said she will first start going to official engagements with William and then once she’s used to that will start doing her own thing. But she will probably not start work till they are married. She’ll be too busy planning the wedding, plus not an official princess yet.
Ugh, it’s so unfair. If you wear different clothing to every event, people think you are a spendthrift.
If you wear the same stuff over and over (like normal people do), they say you are boring. You can’t win.
Maybe she loves those boots! I have shoes and clothes I love that I keep for years too. She is a real person and I think that bodes well for the Royals. They need more reality.
Ms. Middleton’s parents are millionaires. Perhaps they will pay for her clothes. Also, the Daily Fail is the most hilarious tabloid in the UK. That story about the boots was ridiculous. They are beautiful and probably very expensive boots. Was she supposed to only wear them one time?
The story about Diana’s dress . . . ridiculous!!
I am skeptical about the stories of Diana memorials at the wedding. The Palace has not confirmed any of these, so this could just be pure speculation on the part of the press, which is under pressure to come up with wedding news.
Let’s hope not that dress of Diana’s was craptacular. Way too 80’s and not timeless at all. And don’t most husbands pay for their wives wardrobe if she isn’t working? Not sure why that is an issue.
But I love the stories on the royals – keep them coming.
I am sure she needed a nap after this exhausting duty.
As if Prince Williams really asked her to wear Dianna’s dress… some papers are so dumb.
She looks nice and i doubt she’s been wearing the same shoes for years just a similar style, they do annoy me though.
As for the clothing, it’ll probably come from Charles or Williams you’re right but i think designers will be throwing clothes at her for free too lol
Well isn’t William supposed to get a title once they get married? I think once that happens he will have an income that goes along with the title, or she can just buy her own damn clothes. Mom and Dad have tons of money right?
HEB, I was wondering why she wasn’t wearing gloves. It’s bitterly cold in London right now. Silly me.
Okay, Celebitchy. I READ the Daily Mail story and it did NOT refer to this carol service as an official royal engagement. No doubt Kate would have attended it whether she and William had become engaged or not.
As far as the boots go, the story said: “The princess-in-waiting teamed a simple black jacket with her favourite pair of black suede boots for a carol service at St Luke’s Church in Chelsea.
The knee-highs have long been a staple in Miss Middleton’s wardrobe, having worn various pairs countless times over the years.”
“Various pairs” … that means that knee-high boots are a style she has long favored, not that she has owned only ONE pair.
She is, in other words, sticking to her established style of dressing, not glamming up now that she’s engaged to a prince. She has, after all, been named to best-dressed lists numerous times over the years. Why should she change her “look” for a private function, especially one at which she didn’t want to steal the limelight?
Hey, she looks tons better than the blond chica in boots!
She looks gorgeus!
I saw Diana’s wedding gown when she was still alive and it was at Kensington Palace. This was in the early 1990’s, and even then, it looked so-dated. Very Big 80’s. It is not nearly as attractive in person as it was on TV and in photographs, and aside from being dated, it would not favor Kate at all. I doubt Diana would want her to wear it were she still alive-she knew fashion!-so Kate shouldn’t have to.
William has been very thoughtful towards Kate. But we know he has a soft spot for his mom, which is understandable. He just needs to rein it in a bit.
Diana’s dress was such a disappointment. Miles of fabric that she was just lost in. Some 40 yards of fabric. I couldn’t believe they made six copies in case of mishap. What a waste of fabric and pearls and suchwhat.
Kate has such beautiful hair. I hope they don’t make her cut it.
She’s still so plain and boring. Don’t like her at all. She slept her way to the throne, she’s a it of a sk6nky lass.
I don’t think that story about William wanting her to wear his mother’s dress is true. :/
I really didn’t like Diana’s dress either. But maybe they could make Kate a new dress out of the ginormous train that was on Diana’s, if William’s so set on that idea. But I doubt that’s even a true story.
C’mon your dead mother’s ring and bitter brother Earl Spencer is bad enough, and I’m a big Princess Diana fan, but sadly their union is up against high odds already with the divorce rate what it is for the Spencers and the Windsors. William and Kate don’t need any more bad mojo in the wedding mix. Bless William though what a devoted son to his mom and her memory. He just needs some guidance with the wedding business and not the Queen’s or Buck House staff!!
Diana’s wedding dress apparently belongs to her brother at this point. It is part of the “Diana Exhibit” at Althorpe.
A part of that exhibit travels, including the wedding dress. I went to the exhibit here in the US several years ago. And, yes, the dress is very, very ’80s.
