Jessica Simpson is the fashion industry’s “billion dollar baby”

wenn3116282

Around here, we often refer to Jessica Simpson as dumb, or pathetic, or tragic. And she definitely has those qualities… sometimes. Other times, maybe not. Yesterday, Jessica and her fashion and business savvy made the cover of Women’s Wear Daily, where they referred to her as “Fashion Billion Dollar Baby”. For real. Apparently, Jessica multiple fashion, jewelry and fragrance lines (including clothes, jeans, shoes, watches, etc) are selling like gangbusters – to the point where she’s actually breaking records. Here’s more from PopEater:

With a new fiance, a holiday album and news that she is on her way to becoming a billion-dollar mover and shaker in the fashion world, Jessica Simpson is on top of the world these days. “Things are going great for her right now,” says a source close to the singer. “She’s in a really good place now.”

Indeed, Simpson graced the cover of WWD on Dec. 6, with the headline, “Jessica Simpson: Fashion’s Billion Dollar Baby.”

The Jessica Simpson Collection, it turns out, has become one of the most successful celebrity fashion lines of all time, according to WWD. It will most likely become the first ever to earn more than a billion dollars in retail sales, considering her line brought in a whopping $750 million in retail sales this year alone, WWD reports.

Simpson’s estimated net worth from all the shoes, clothes and accessories she’s selling? A cool $100 million. Not bad for the gal who famously wondered if tuna was chicken on her hit MTV series ‘Newlyweds,’ with ex-hubby Nick Lachey.

“She is the girl next door and has great product that surrounds her,” Vince Camuto, the founder and CEO of Camuto Group, her brand’s master licensee, told WWD. “People like her. People look at her as a style icon.”

A style icon with plenty of high-wattage competition. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are launching an apparel and accessories collection, which will be distributed exclusively at Kohl’s this fall. Madonna and her daughter, Lourdes, launched the Material Girl collection at Macy’s earlier this year. Celebrities including Gwen Stefani, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Victoria Beckham also have their own lines.

The Camuto Group has licensing partnerships for 22 of Simpson’s product lines, including swimwear, dresses, outerwear, watches and fragrances, and recently licensed The Jones Group Inc. to create and distribute Simpson’s new sportswear line for next fall.

The success of her jeanswear collection, to which The Jones Group also has the license, has gone “beyond our expectations,” Jack Gross, CEO of Jeanswear for The Jones Group, told WWD. Jessica Simpson Sportswear and Jeanswear are expected to generate between $150 million and $200 million in retail sales within the next two years, he says.

Wow – I’m really impressed. Jessica may be dumb, and her father may have no idea how to successfully market his daughter as a celebrity, but they know enough to surround themselves with really smart business people. And to give credit where it’s due, I do think Jessica probably insists on quality – if she didn’t, the multiple lines would skim and cheap out, and the lines wouldn’t be as popular. Good for Jessica.

For someone who’s “the fashion industry’s billion dollar baby” she sure doesn’t dress like it. *shakes head sadly* All that money, and still can’t find a decent stylist.

  2. brin says:

    She’s her own worst advertisement.

  3. Lila says:

She does have really great shoes. Seriously. I’ve seen her stuff in the Victoria’s Secret catalog. I have to admit that I was impressed. Her price range and quality are right on the mark, too.

  4. mln76 says:

Glad she is making some dough now if she could only be smart enough to get a pre-nup in place.

  5. Riley says:

I really don’t like a lot of perfumes and I don’t wear them, but I have to admit, that Jessica Simpson’s Fancy Love is a delightful scent. I am not sure it would work on everybody but it is very fresh, bright, not too sweet, not to cologney. And women in their 20s to their 40s (even older) can wear it and not smell like an old mink.

  6. Lukie says:

    PRE-NUP!

  7. wonderful says:

Didnt some other guy buy the license to her name years and years ago? Don’t get it twisted, she’s not some undercover genius.

  8. Leticia says:

I bought a pair of her brand’s flats for my daughter. The shoes were very uncomfortable, but my daughter wore them anyway, because the shoes were super cute .

  9. guesty says:

looked @ the jsimp collection online yesterday & imho it’s just meh. kinda cheaptastic looking with her name on it.

idk…maybe her line is nicer in the stores.

  10. Jayna says:

If you don’t get a prenup, you’re dumber than Paul McCartney was when he didn’t get one and everyone begged him to.

  11. Samigirl says:

I’m with lukie. If she is worth 100 million, and DOES NOT get a prenup with Eric, I don’t care how much money she has made, she is an idiot.

  12. liz says:

Why does she always look so stupid and dense? I think it would pierce my bones to try and have a conversation with her. People with money never deserve it or use it for good.

  13. LittleFATMe says:

Isn’t that kind of the case A LOT. Often when I see the artist or designer behind something I am shocked. Like on Project Runway, sometimes those folks dress like trash, yet make beautiful things.

  14. LolaBella says:

…and yet she cannot seem to dress herself.

    Mind.Boggled.

  15. spinner says:

I was in Nordstrom’s browsing the shoe section when I saw this uber chic gal sporting a great pair of pumps. I asked her who made those shoes & she pointed to the display. They were Jessica Simpson brand. I bought 2 pairs. The price was right & they are super cute & comfortable. That said…she looks like she is gaining weight by leaps & bounds. She is really puffy looking in some of these shots.

  16. wonderful says:

I REFER YOU ALL BACK TO MY COMMENT # 7.

  17. Po says:

I think wonderful is correct. I think I heard before that she sold her licensing rights but even if I hadn’t heard that I still wouldn’t believe that she or her father have the business smarts to pull this off.
Lets think about this. The dynamic duo ruined her movie career by putting her in roles she couldn’t or shouldn’t play, they had her on a tour in mom jeans and forgetting the words to her own songs, they can’t get her a decent husband, and despite the fact that she has a fashion line she usually wears clothes that are completely inappropriate for her figure. I’m sorry I just don’t believe it.

  18. t says:

You are right, wonderful. Vince Camuto is the guy who paid her 15 million for the right to peddle her name as a brand to clothing manufacturers years ago.

And this story is just a press release from him to WWD. Her only job with the clothing line is to stay famous and get good press that will spill over to the line and since she can’t seem to get good press, the guy who owns her tarnished name is trying to do her job for her.

Jessica Simpson is not smart. She’s just lucky. Lucky that this Camuto hasn’t cut ties with her because this stuff is selling in spite of her name, not because of it.

  19. Dana M says:

    @ #7, 16

Her lawyers negotiated a “master license” agreement on her behalf. The master license covers a broad range of licensing and merchandising rights with respect to the name, image and likeness of Jessica Simpson.

  20. gigi* says:

she has to stop eating soo much!

  21. Deeta says:

I would never buy anything with her name… but I have found myself more than one time staring with sadness some of her shoes. She has some really cute shoes.

What I dont get is how somebody with her amount of money hasnt hired a good stylist yet. She is a good looking girl with a nice curvy body. She can look WAY better.

  22. Liana says:

she has some nice bags, too. And she was actually really good on Project Runway, surprisingly savvy.

  23. ! says:

Jessica Simpson is “lucky” in that her image is one that people don’t mind trusting with items like cute shoes and fragrances. She’s just so “girly girl” that stuff like dessert scented lotions is really just perfect for her to shill. Seriously, can you think of a better celebrity to promote sugar and fluff, besides maybe Katy Perry?

It’s a shame that everyone wants to take away from her success. Her lines would not sell as well if they were backed by someone unlikeable. The worst Jessica has ever done is be a ditz (and maybe the sleeping with Bam Margera thing) and so she evokes more pity than she does hate. People will buy from those whom they pity, not so much those whom they hate.

  24. photo jojo says:

Her shoe line is murder on the feet but my god the styles are amazing!

  25. craigc says:

Im sorry to point out the obvious, but she has gained SO MUCH weight! Look at the top pic!

  26. aenflex says:

Those flavoured body treats she came out with tanked…they were nasty. Her extensions tanked too, with Paves. If you have enough money to keep trying different angles, odds are you will get there someday.

  27. Lem says:

I have several extremely adorable, very comfy pairs of her shoes. I bought them despite the fact the say Jessica Simpson

  28. Nanz says:

I don’t know why, but that image of JS in the oversized coat reminds me of Anna Nicole Smith. At least JS isn’t being fed drug cocktails…

  29. Spring says:

It’s just… sometimes I see shoes or a great purse and I’ll go “oh cute!” and then I’ll pick them up and see the big JESSICA SIMPSON and all of a sudden… ew. No. I just can’t wear anything with her name on it.

So people actually get past that feeling…?

  30. Embee says:

    Not I, Spring. Not I. 😉

  31. dread pirate cuervo says:

I hate to admit it, but her shoes & bags are pretty hot. I tried on a pair of the shoes once, & while they weren’t comforatable enough for me to wear with JS emblazoned on them, they became the reference point for what I was looking for. If they didn’t say JS, I would probably actually buy her stuff. I’m pretty much anti-label unless it’s from Coach (my initial is C).

  32. Shoe_Lover says:

you know Jakey G should have asked Jessica to be his new GF!!! That pairing wouldnt have turned me off Jake the way the Taylor Swift thing has.

  33. Sakota says:

The people who deserve the credit are the people who are actually running her businesses. I do’nt think Jessica is as involved as she is hyped, same with the Olson Twins. They likely simply slapped their name and faces on the brand and now have all the money and credit.

  34. Jenny says:

Maybe the quality is okay, no idea (i’m not from the usa),but i can imagine the jeans-stuff is successfull cause she doesn’thave a perfect body. She seems to be the girl next door (body weight) so women can identify.

  35. truthzbetta says:

I cannot buy something with her name on it. Someone might see that.

OK for a 10 year old style wise but who wants to promote brand-ism in kids.

I blame J-Ho. She’s calmed down the personal life which is cool, but she made today’s celeb think they should be in my face at the dept. store too. The only way to avoid them is shop online, and that I do.

  36. Louise says:

Regardless the licensing, most people do not realize how much money she has. Because her music and acting career is tanking, there’s this image that she’s just a step away from being Lindsay Lohan financially.

  37. irishserra says:

    @gigi*: I think it’s alcohol. She’s quite a drinker.

I’m sure she’ll get a pre-nup… cuz daddy will make sure she does! I think Papa Simpson learned his lesson after being burned when *he* refused the pre-nup Nick Lachey had requested prior to his marriage with Jessica (when he was still the breadwinner).

  38. Kim says:

Jessica isnt a dumb girl. She knew she wasnt the best singer or actress and used her name to sell products. She makes more money off these lines than alot of A list celebs on their movies!!! Now if only she made better choices in men =(
1 word for you Jessica – PRENUP.

  39. jai says:

jessica simpson is not fat (this coming from 5’9, 130lb woman) she looks great- has the figure i wished i had!! she’s a lovely woman- and financially savvy too, if the reports that she’s worth 100 million are true and she had any input into the decisions! good on her!

  40. dragonlady sakura says:

Alright, I admit it, I own three pairs of her shoes!

  41. HotPockets says:

I am not going to lie, but I bought the cutest pair of shoes off of the JS line. I was SHOCKED when I saw her label on these fantastic Mary-janes. I adore those shoes! Thanks Jessica!

  42. jane16 says:

Sephora gave me a sample of her “dessert” lip gloss a few years ago & it gave me a horrible allergic reaction. After that, I don’t buy anything from celebrity lines, any of them…even if I liked the celebrity. I think they’re just marketing scams. Also, I’m trying really hard to quit buying things that are made in China & other slave labor countries.

  43. mike says:

    To all those trashing Simpson,

    Oh plzzzzz

It takes savvy, real smarts, to do this well. C’mon folks. She ain’t the only celeb peddling stuff. Why is she doing so well when so many others have failed?

So let’s give credit where it’s due. Celeb fashion is like celeb singers. How many actually succeed? Just because you throw money after money, doesn’t mean it’ll stick.

It stuck for her and now she’s raking it in. She may indeed be dumb as a doorknob, but at the very least, there’s someone in her inner council who is crazy like a fox. It is another form of smart to be able to surround oneself with those who can get things done. And she very obviously has.

  44. Jules says:

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who can’t bring myself to buy celebrity-named goods. I just can’t do it. I like one of Jennifer Lopez’s perfumes and one of Paris Hilton’s but I would be too embarrassed to buy it or tell anyone what I was wearing. Same with Jessica Simpson clothes…they could be cute, but I just couldn’t have any self respect while wearing them.

  45. Henriette says:

Friend told me this funny story. She – friend – went shoe shopping and found a pair of great shoes and a decent price. But they had the Jessica Simpson brand on the inside and she felt icky. Without skipping a beat, the salesman said, Don’t worry – we have masking tape that you can use to cover up the JS name; lots of our customers do that. : )

  46. wonderful says:

    BURN # 45!

  47. telesma says:

I don’t know about her clothes, but whoever designs her shoe line is very talented, because they are very attractive shoes. And not bad quality, especially in that price range.

  48. Signe Loflen says:

I am going to bookmark your website for the future. Keep writing great material such as.
