Bale out on bail, there are no charges against him at this time

More details have come out about the Christian Bale’s arrest, which wasn’t an arrest in the US sense in that’s what they always call it in Britain when they question someone. Bale voluntarily went in to talk to police today after his mother and sister reported an alleged assault almost a day after it happened.

The incident occurred at a London hotel on Sunday, Bale’s family reported it on Monday, and he went into the station today for what sounds like a scheduled appointment with officers there.

Bale denies that he assaulted anyone and says he fully cooperated with police and that no charges have been filed.

Christian Bale’s attorneys released a statement Tuesday denying assault allegations that led to the actor’s arrest in London:

“Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister,” the star’s lawyers said in the statement. “Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale.”

[From People.com]

TMZ reports that Bale wasn’t charged with a physical assault, he was charged with Class 4 Assault, which is “verbal intent to cause alarm” under English law. [thanks MSat]

There’s been a lot of speculation about what actually happened of course, but we can’t point the finger at his family or at Bale without having more information. Many families have long standing problems and feuds and it’s difficult to know how this played out or if it’s just a false report for whatever reason. There are comments online that claim that his sister and mother were drunk and/or on drugs and were looking for money and recognition from Bale since he was in town. [Thanks Blunted]

We have no way of verifying if that’s true or if someone just made that up. As it is, it sounds like a family fight and a verbal one at that. If someone was hurt at all you assume that Bale would have been charged or they would have reported it sooner – no matter who is to blame.

Bale has been released on, um, bail. People reports that he is scheduled to return for more questioning in September. It sounds like standard procedure in this type of case, but I have no way of knowing that.

    There you go!

Now, you BITE IT Enonymouse, he he.

I bet those two birds will be in every TV channel making money now.

  2. daisyfly says:

If there were a law in the US like that in England, 99.999999999% of the population would have an arrest record longer than Route 66.

  3. Kaiser says:

Totally, Daisyfly. “I wish you were dead, bitch…. What are those handcuffs… wait, why am I being arrested?!?!?!”

  4. Kolby says:

I can’t even count the number of times I’ve threatened violence, or how many times I’ve said, “I’ll cut a bitch if…..” I always thought it was one of my more endearing traits. 😛

  5. vdantev says:

A shouting match qualifies for ‘assault’ anymore. You don’t have to touch the other person, just make them fear for their safety.

  6. jinx says:

I wonder how soon Grandma will be visiting with her grand daughter? When she’s 18 I am guessing.

  7. Bodhi says:

Yikes! I hope it all gets cleared up.

And I hope we find out the whole story :nosy:

  8. claire says:

This supposedly happened in HIS hotel room right? If his verbal abuse was so bad, why didn’t they just leave before it got to a level where a visit to the police is necessary? Especially on the following day where tempers would be after going down. There doesn’t seem to be any suggestion of him preventing them from leaving. Gotta say, once it came out that it was verbal, I’m tending towards the side of Batman on this one. And I can take or leave him, so I’m not talking as a fan.

  9. Shane says:

“verbal intent to cause alarm”, wtf does that mean?

So lets say I get in an argument with someone I don’t like and I say, “I hope you die.” That’s a crime in Britain?

I had just saw a Biography program on Bale last week. He moved with his Father to the US. Maybe there are sour grapes with his Mother. I hope this doesn’t ruin his image.
Here is a like to more info;http://www.christianbale.net/home.htm

  11. Sijoi says:

Probably a money thing. He refused to give and they had him arrested.

  12. Scott F. says:

I would point out to everyone that this isn’t just an English thing. In my state at least, you can be arrested for a verbal argument with your spouse and charged with Domestic Assault, a Class A misdemeanor. Happened to my sister and her husband a few years back and they were BOTH convicted.

This is the state of affairs after a few decades of laws being written by victim’s rights advocates. The only reason people don’t freak out is because they don’t realize (as evidenced by some comments here) that it’s even illegal in this country.

The term assault means verbal, if you physically touch someone, then it becomes battery, not assault. People need to understand that assault and battery are two DIFFERENT charges. Isn’t this a great country we live in?

  13. mizzmish says:

what is verbal intent to cause alarm? Please. Sounds like his clown of a mother is gold diggin around the dark knight success already.

And Scott F…lots of people say lots of things to get a PITA out of their face without a true intent. So what. IMHO unless a crime is commited that follows through with the verbal threats… police have more to do than deal with “harrassment” that occurs one time in a heat of the moment.

Obviously if it goes on and on and on and opresses or interferes with ones ability to function normally that would be different. This was a fight in his hotel room right?

Every law gets abused. Its absuuuuuurd.

  14. Blackalicious says:

@ vdantev- is that true? I wish I knew that when the psycho bitch doctor at work was screaming at everyone in sight. I swear I would have called the po po on her then acted meek and like I was scared- she needs to learn a lesson in anger management.

  15. Scott F. says:

Hey, I never said I agreed with it – I was just letting everyone know what the law is here in the US. I agree, unless someone physically assaults a person, I think the cops have better things to do.

I was told the reason they passed all those laws making verbal crap illegal is because some psycho would flat out tell someone they were going to kill them, and then follow through with it. Then you’ve got the family screaming ‘he SAID he was gonna kill him! Why the hell didn’t you arrest him!?’ So they made it against the law so they could arrest the guy.

Hey, a hit movie deserves hitting the woman in my life-doesn’t it???

  17. bros says:

scott F, dont be such a conservative dumbass about victims right groups. god, seriously you could have a problem with ponies and rainbows just to have another thing to bash. you really cant think of a scenario when a verbal threat might be a good thing for police to investigate? i can think of a few-not least of which when a person with a history of violence tells someone like his wife he is going to kill her. or when someone who has a restraining order against him or her and tells the other person something threatening. these kinds of scenarios should be worthy of calling the police. all too often verbal threats arent taken seriously enough and people end up dead. stop bitching about over zealous victims rights groups and what a waste of time it is for the cops to investigate.

  18. Vannuccia says:

There’s always something a bit “off” about Christian Bale. When he’s interviewed he always reminds me too much of his American Psycho character.

  19. Scott F. says:

Bros – That’s your problem, you only care about what SOUNDS good and ‘right’.

Sure, it sounds like a good idea to make verbal threats against the law. After all, the scenarios you mentioned are perfectly plausible, right? Well, except the one with the restraining order. If you knew anything about a restraining order you would know they’re not allowed ANY contact anyways, so regardless of any threat just talking to the person would be against the law already.

Problem with liberal (gonna go out on a limb here since you blasted me for being conservative) ideas is that you don’t stop to think of my favorite law – the Law of Unintended Consequences! Once you create anything, especially a new law, you can’t control how people will take advantage of it.

Now that you’ve got a law criminalizing a ‘threat’ – what are you going to require as proof? Pissed off at your husband? Call the cops and tell them he threatened you. How is he gonna disprove that? It’s not a physical assault, there are no bruises or evidence. It’s just her word for it.

Neighbors pissing you off? Call the cops and tell ’em you heard them fighting. Like I said earlier, they’ll cart both their asses off to jail. You think they require a tape recording of the fight before they arrest someone? Nope. When you start making arrests based on NO physical evidence, that’s a dangerous precedent. But what does it matter right? You can sleep at night because you did the ‘right’ thing by passing a law to ‘protect’ people.

He and his Mom had some kinda split over his move to the USA years ago….his Dad left at the same time.So no suprise there.Funerals, weddings and incredible success bring out the beasts in people.

  21. Sue says:

Being in law enforcement-have to agree with Scott F-aaaaaaaaaaaalll the way.People are scum-they LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE…….all the time every day-every way imaginable for any reason!!!!! Sorry……

  22. daisy424 says:

    from TMZ;
Sources directly connected to the Christian Bale case tell TMZ there was physical contact between Christian and his mom, but it amounted to next to nothing.

We’re told Bale pushed his mom out of the way during the altercation. She was not hurt and did not fall down. There’s a division of opinion on whether the contact was a “push” or a “brush.”

It seems what was hurt most during the confrontation were feelings … nothing more than feelings.

  23. Bentley says:

Clever headline but if Bale wasn’t arrested- and he wasn’t- there was no bail to be posted. But, again, A for cleverness….

  24. Mairead says:

To be fair it would need to have been one hell of an argument and some really serious threats made. But every allegation must be investigated to be ruled out.

Perhaps the police in your state are very vigilant – but here and probably in many parts of Britain, just calling the police to say that your neighbours are fighting won’t get them to come running.

I only wish that were the case – having to listen to the useless fu*kers next door howling at each other at 4.50am on a Sunday morning and hearing things walloping off the wall isn’t exactly pleasant. If nothing else the bastards would be kept quiet for a few hours.

  25. Kolby says:

Bentley – in England you are “arrested” even if you’re only there for questioning. So, yes, technically, he was arrested.

  26. Lola says:

I hope this isn’t true because I really like him.

  27. Dingles says:

I’m not assuming anything about Bale until details come out. My first instinct is to believe that he and his family got into an argument, and they thought the best way to get back at him would be to ruin his movie premiere.

Whatever, he would have to do a hell of alot more than yell at his mom (which I have done plenty of myself) to make me not a fan.

  28. bros says:

yeah scott, because we all know no one violates protective orders (dont presume I dont know anything about them, you have no idea). the problem with those is that they are so unenforceable in many cases. i realize there are cases in which people lie or take advantage of the situation, but that doesnt mean there shouldnt be a law requiring police to do due diligence about verbal threats and abuse. the law of unintended consequences swings both ways.

  29. poopie says:

He does come across as ‘holier than thou’ in EVERY aspect ….does he believe he’s REALLY Batman? probably so.. arrogant bastard.. i don’t like him even if he didn’t slap his momma !

  30. snappyfish says:

why would someone wait a day to ‘file a complaint’. this sounds like it was done with malice to cause embarrassment. if someone was truly ‘alarmed’ they would report the incident immediately.

This sounds like mommie has some problems and isn’t getting any attention. Bale is yummy. All accounts are that he is a great guy and a good family man.

It isn’t the family you come from but the one you make that is truly yours. We all grow up and have our own families maybe Mommie is feeling a little left behind in all the dark knight hoopla
