Why is it when celebrities divorce they end up going to dinner afterwards and leaking details to the press? It’s like they have to show that they’re not involved with all the acrimonious name-calling and blaming that accompany typical divorces. As Kaiser wrote Friday, many of the recent stories on the Scarlet and Ryan split have a definite pro-Ryan slant, with wording that suggests that Scarlett was somehow too immature for him, and that he wanted to work it out but she was ready to bolt. Now there’s an undoubtedly publicist-sanctioned piece in People about Ryan and ScarJo’s dinner and how they were “civil” and “friendly” with each other but aren’t reuniting.

That was certainly how they appeared Friday night as they got together for what a source tells PEOPLE was a “friendly meal” at Blue Ribbon restaurant in New York. “They were smiling and laughing the whole time,” the source says.

Johansson, 26, had just returned from a trip to Jamaica with girlfriends and Reynolds, 34, was in town for a photo shoot during a break from filming in Atlanta.

“They just wanted to connect and have a friendly chat,” the source says. “They just wanted to sit down together. The tone was light and fun despite the untruths that the media is working up. 
They aren’t reconciling. This was just two people who were married being civil and friendly.”

Sources say the pair, who were married in 2008, had grown apart because the demands of their busy schedules.

Maybe this happened, and maybe it was a way for these two to present a friendly face to their divorce. Meanwhile there’s a story on E! that makes it sound like Scarlett’s people are trying to hit back at the carefully worded reports from Ryan’s camp. They claim that these two were “never together” and naturally “grew apart.” Scarlett isn’t immature, according to this story, Ryan is. “She wants a family once she finds the right guy with enough confidence to deal with her celebrity,” their source says. So while these two are having dinner and a “friendly chat” their publicists are battling it out with leaked stories to various celebrity outlets. There’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than just Scarlet calling Ryan a jerk over the phone.
