Angelina Jolie has been working with the international SOS Children’s Village program for years – I think she personally sponsors one of the villages in Jordan, maybe? I’m too lazy to look it up, but I know she’s done a lot of work with the organization, and the program is very proud to have Angelina as one of their sponsors. Well, it looks like Angelina and Brad have done more than simply donate to and visit SOS Children’s Villages around the world – they also set up a fellowship for potential law school graduates who have grown up in a Village. SOS Children’s Villages just sent us this press release announcing the first Jolie Legal Fellow, Nathalie Nozile, a Haitian who is a recent graduate of the University of Florida’s College of Law. Nozile grew up in a Village. Amazing.
Washington, D.C. (January 12, 2011): SOS Children’s Villages, a global organization dedicated to providing family-based services for children without parental care, today announced that Nathalie Nozile, an alumna of the SOS Children’s Villages in Santo, Haiti, has been selected as the first Jolie Legal Fellow. Ms. Nozile was selected after graduating from the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law this past spring. The Jolie Legal Fellowship, created and funded by the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, supports the Government of Haiti’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the Haitian judicial system in the challenging post-earthquake environment. Jolie Legal Fellows are attorneys who will concentrate on the protection of Haiti’s most vulnerable children in the judicial system, by serving as special assistants to key Government of Haiti officials. Ms. Nozile leaves for Haiti later this month to begin her work.

SOS Children’s Villages has had a presence in Haiti for over 30 years. In its Children’s Villages in Santo and Cap Haitien, SOS is raising nearly 700 children who would otherwise be without parental care. Its Santo school, located near Port-au-Prince, now educates over 900 children who attend classes in two shifts. SOS is also providing emergency food supplies to 14,000 Haitians daily and will begin construction of a third Haitian Children’s Village in Les Cayes later in 2011.

Angie totally walks what she talks. I personally liked her better when she was the crazy brother kissing bisexual who carried a vile of Billy Bob Thorntons blood around with her. Those were good times. But she definitely does good work. No one can deny that. I wonder how much she’s given to charity in dollars AND man hours over the years.

Thats amazing and a true triumph of all the hard work and donations. I know it has to make Angelina feel good for the organization and has to inspire other kids in the village. Love Angie and I wish all those poor kids in Haiti the very best and all the people who were displaced by the earthquake.
One thing I like about Angelina is she’s very hands on with the people she helps. Most celebs just give money, and never waste their time actually going to the country and getting among the people.

I can understand criticism of her personal life (though I don’t agree with most of it), but I will never understand why anyone would question or demean her actions on the behalf of the world’s less fortunate. No matter what her motives, she’s done some amazing things to raise awareness and to change (and probably save) countless lives.
As she herself has said, anyone who has her means and has seen certain horrors up close has no choice but to act. It would almost be heartless not to do so.
You can judge celebrities for whatever you want, but it truly baffles me that anyone would criticize someone for changing someone else’s life. Of all the things she could be doing with her high-profile image, this is probably the best by far.

Say what you will about the woman but there’s no denying the good work that she does. It’s really touching to read about someone’s life changing in this way. That’s profound stuff, stuff way more important than the latest tabloid headline or box office countdown. There really is more to life than a lavish lifestyle and red carpet premieres and Brad and Angie are doing fantastic things with their money and their time. More power to them.

I’m really impressed this Nathalie woman. She overcame a lot, worked hard and earned a law degree, and rather than go join a firm, she’s going back to Haiti to help other kids. Not many people would do that if “better” opportunities were in front of them.

I see absolutely nothing “self serving” in this. How wonderful that this fellowship will enable Nathalie to go back to her homeland and help make some positive impact.
She is engaged, obviously, and very involved in not only helping, but providing tools for the future. Self-serving, my a–. Think of all the wealthy fat cats who clutch their billions to their chest and may write a check every now to fulfill the status quo, but then never really get involved in anything of substance.

How is this “self-serving”? FFS, hate the woman all you want, but don’t deny the good she does with both her money and her time.
I read an article about a firm that helps celebrities (and non-celebs) team up with charities or start foundations etc. The celebrities use the charity aspect of it as an investment (for their public image) and for the tax benefits.
Depending on how the foundation is set up, they can then pay themselves or family members as employees, board members, etc. It’s a win/win for all involved. Yes, the celeb is helping people (hopefully), the celeb’s image is enhanced (look at Angelina’s public image), and they see big tax breaks from the charitable donations.
I am sure there are many people with foundations that funnel their money back to themselves and family members without giving much money away. It seems like I read about one of Britney Spears’ charities that paid big money to the people that ran it but barely gave it away. Does anyone remember that?
I will say that Angelina really seems to care about her causes and gives a lot of her money away.
I am sure all the children she has supported through the SOS Children Villages all over the world including the USA are not seeing it as self serving.
She has been doing this for MANY MANY years. NOT since some people have begun to notice or the media.

You should read more or check with your accountant on how these tax deductions works and how much percentage can be deducted. It differs between private foundations and public charities. You don’t get a 100% tax write off for your donations. The percentage is even less for private foundations and the requirements and the regulations are more stringent than public foundations. CB did a write up on their 2008 tax return and its commendable that they’ve put out $12M (each put out a share of $6M last year)and their lawyer even contributed $10K of his own personal money. The JP foundation gave out $6M+ to various recipients against a minimal expense of $224,564 for grant management to GPG. Notice there are no salaries and travel, entertainment expenses by any of the directors.
You seem to have the notion that if you give a specific X amount then that is a tax deductible entry automatically, when there are rules limiting how much is deductible of a charitable contribution in a particular tax year. Private foundations don’t enjoy as much tax benefits as public charities and are subject to various restrictions (administrative) that do not apply to other charitable gifting techniques. There’s even prohibition on some transactions and there’s a 2% excise tax on investment income and can get 1% if distribution requirements were met.
For example, gifts of cash to a public charity are deductible up to 50% of the donor’s adjusted gross income (AGI). By comparison, gifts of cash or unappreciated assets to a private foundation had been limited to 30% of AGI. Hence, with an AGI of $500,000, a donor could claim an income tax deduction for $150,000 to a private foundation.
But the good thing about setting up your own private foundation is that you have control over the disposition of funds.
Also I would like to add that since the Jolie-Pitts does donations to charities/causes who are not registered as US Charity, those ones will be not be tax deductible at all (ref to their individual tax return). With few exceptions like those charitable donations made and enacted by law like the tsunami in December 2004 and recently the Haiti earthquake (although 2009 donations will be reflected in your 2010 filing).
@Beck: You can google it but every year Foxnews, and probably others, investigates the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. The report always shows they give away millions and have very little expenses. Not sure why you think it’s a front but whatever. Also Brad’s beard, Shiloh’s haircut, etc is breaking news. If there was even the tiniest hint that the foundation wasn’t legitimate, it would be everywhere. I don’t get saying Angelina’s charity is only for image. She’s been doing this for more than 10 years. If she only cared about image she would just donate money and attend those expensive charity dinners/balls not go to dangerous and developing countries. Besides look at any Angelina thread. The majority are hate posts so clearly charity has done nothing for her image.

Here’s a Boston Globe article juxtaposing the Jolie Pitt Foundation and Bono’s basically Bono’s idea of charity was to have some Loius Vuitton bags airlifted to the bush country in Africa and most of the money in Bono’s foundation does go to his family. On the other hand according to analysis of their 2008 tax return, the JPF along with Matt Damon and George Clooney foundations have very little overhead and most of the money actually does get to the people.
Whatever her motives are Angie puts her money where her mouth is and does what she can.

Blah, blah, self serving, publicity, same old comments. Whatever. Wasn’t she an Oscar winning actress before any of this? Yes, she was. Her career is not dependent upon this publicity, but the charities that she supports DO get the benefit of the press. They get to have their organization in front of tens or hundreds of millions, which increases attention and gets them more support in the future. Seriously, most people in the US never heard of SOS before Jolie/Pitt stories on the topic. Nothing at all wrong with this. It’s a good thing for the charity and the kids who depend on it, regardless of what people like about Angelina or THINK they know about her life and her motives. This story is great news for this young lady and her country.

I actually think the people that trash her for all the work she does would have a different tune if like the majority of celebrities she was more focused on what outfit she is wearing. If she talked about her makeup or shoes. I say this because the minute there is an article on her humanitarian work the negative comments begin to focus on the superficial. What she is wearing.. how she looks..she skinny, look at her face.. etc
What that has to do with the article is beyond me. But if she was all about the cloths I am sure the people trashing her would be all on board. They are never ever vocal about the celebrities that spend their time being photographed in the “outfit” or those that pop up for every single photo op event to get their picture taken. They give praised for their fabulous choice of clothing. How they would kill for the shoes.
So it just seems some people need the superficial. They just can’t handle the SUBSTANCE.
People with millions of dollars don’t HAVE to do anything with it but spend it on useless crap or whatever they want to, really. Giving a large amount of it to good causes is a good thing. You don’t have to feel the pinch or live in a tent in your parents’ backyard for charity to mean something. We could have the Jolie-Pitts – who walk the walk and do a lot that no one ever hears about (they don’t just do big projects, they also donate to food banks and small charities across the country) or Bill and Miranda Gates, who have pledged most of their money to their foundation, or we could have Paris Hilton or Brandon Davis, who are content to spend daddy’s money jetsetting, binging, and being assholes. No contest.
I get so sick of hearing you pompous people saying it’s a huge tax write off. If that’s the case then all celebs should be doing this instead of hoarding their millions for a rainy day.
People (rich and less rich) who don’t want to pay many taxes have much more sophisticated ways and tools to do so that setting up charities and giving money that can be easily trace since it’s always public.
Why do you think that we, financial people and accountants and law people are hired for ? We work on finacial plans, assets to drain cash in places, different assets, share, bonds, paintings, jewell, you name it ALL OVER THE WORLD so that our clients pay the least taxes they are required to by the law…And don’t get me started with tax evasion and tax havens.
And another thing, most enterprises, big or not, launch programs where they finance at low cost a handful of potential customers, giving them access to their product for free with the premise that those clients will promote it to ten others. They have a yearly budget for that and use it as a tax write off. they better give the product for free and get free promotion instead of this money going to tax. It’s legal, smart and good management.

So, would some of you folks who accuse her of being self serving be happier if she had a perfume named after her like so many other celebrities or givng money and opportunity to others. Both she and Pitt do more than just collect money. The Make It Right Organization also has excellent output with very little overhead, so they don’t just raise money, they give it away with concrete results.

That Boston Globe’s article is unfair towards Bono.
Bono alone has done more than the sum of all HW’s celebrities for the cause of Africa’s poverty.
The “Drop the debt” campaign has been very successful and helpful, and I guess that it wasn’t exactly pleasant to shake the hand of G.W. Bush or Berlusconi’s, no matter if Bono is a sanctimonious “pallone gonfiato”.
His work, his campaigns and the ONE campaign especially, succeed no matter how dumb and unbeareable his words and attitude are.
He understood that what can really help Africa is forcing western countries to drop the debts that Africa owes to them.
I mean, it’s pretty useless to give money to some charity foundations if Africa can’t have its own funds to raise itself alone from poverty. We must let Africa grow, not just survive on the crumbles of our unjustly rich dishes.
Those debts are a modern and subtle form of slavery.
And to end this rant, Africa is the poorest country because we exploit all of world’s resources. Guess that Africa’s starvation and wars help us to live wealthy.
We are such hypocrites who love to feel as saint giving money watching a picture of an African child coverd with flies.

It is considered RESPECTFUL to dress according to the customs and culture of that country. In some Muslim countries, ALL women must wear full Hijab, even tourists; if not they can be thrown in jail or deported. Or worse.
And the photographs are not self-promotion. She is a Goodwill UN Ambassador, and part of the duties of her POSITION is to liase with the media (just like politicians like the President etc) and have them present to take photos etc, to DRAW ATTENTION to the causes. It is promotion of the CAUSE, not her herself. She has NO CHOICE in the media being there.
