As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t watch Glee. It’s not that I dislike musicals – I actually love musicals. Real musicals. But I don’t enjoy the vibe of Glee, with it’s ridiculous high school setting and what amounts to glorified Karaoke. Plus, the people in the show annoy the hell out of me. Lea Michele? I want to smack her. Matthew Morrison? Zzzzz. Dianna Agron? Double zzzz. That 40 year old Jeremy Piven-esque douche with the Mohawk? Ugh.
Anyway, as Glee’s popularity seems to be waning, more and more rock stars are speaking out about their hatred for Glee. Slash was one of the first to say he didn’t give a crap and wasn’t going to license his songs for the show. Then in January, the Kings of Leon and Glee creator Ryan Murphy got into a public bitch-fight over song-licensing, which quickly devolved into a faux-homophobic controversy. Now Dave Grohl, former Nirvana bandmate and current lead of the Foo Fighters, is calling out Murphy and Glee in a new interview:
When it comes to using his band’s songs on ‘Glee,’ the Foos frontman sides with Kings of Leon and Slash in the licensing battle. Don’t count on hearing the Foo Fighters hit “Times Like These” on Glee anytime soon. Frontman Dave Grohl says he and his bandmates are squarely in the corner of Kings of Leon and Slash. As in, they want no part of the Ryan Murphy-helmed show.
“It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do f—ing Glee,” Grohl told THR following the premiere of Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, the new Foo Fighters documentary which just made its South By Southwest debut. “And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his f—ing show… f— that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee.”
You might be wondering, has Grohl ever actually watched the show? As it turns out, yes, he gave Glee a whirl. “I watched 10 minutes. It’s not my thing,” Grohl grizzled. But he doesn’t have as much of a problem with the series as he does with its creator.
Recounting anti-Glee comments made by Slash earlier this year and subsequent retorts by Murphy, reported by THR, Grohl explained to drummer Taylor Hawkins: “The Glee guy, what a f—ing jerk. Slash was the first one. He wanted to do Guns ‘n’ Roses and Slash is like, ‘I hate f—ing musicals. It’s worse than Grease.’ Then [Murphy’s] like, ‘Well, of course he’d say that, he’s a washed up ol’ rock star, that’s what they f—ing do.’ And then Kings of Leon say, ‘No, we don’t want to be on your show.’ And then he’s like, ‘Snotty little assholes…’ And it’s just like, Dude, maybe not everyone loves Glee. Me included.”
Said Hawkins: “Yeah, f— that sh-t.”

You know what I love about these quotes? I love that Dave recounted everything that went down between Ryan Murphy and these rock stars. Like, Dave was paying attention and he has a gossip-writer’s memory for details and chronology. I love him now. He and I are the same person.
Anyway, I can’t wait to see what Ryan Murphy says about this. You know he’s going to have another epic douche meltdown.

I don’t understand why he thinks he is entitled to profit off someone elses work. It’s essentially piggy backing off someone elses success. If he were truly talented, he’d be creating his own music. Then he’d have a leg to stand on when he started flinging insults.
I actually liked the show; for the first 6 episodes.
Murphy’s ego took over and it hasn’t had the same perspective since. I gave up after the 8th show.

I’m in the same boat. Not that I own the rights to any songs, but I absolutely cannot stand Ryan Murphy. The guy is such an entitled dick. And beyond that…I don’t dig the show. Can’t get into it. I tried. It’s cheesy and cliched and I’m just not impressed by it. Whatevs.

He is creating his own music. The last episode was full of original songs. Not that I disagree that Murphy’s an epic douche, because he is, but he also does have original songs on the show, or at least did this last show.
He’s absolutely right, it’s their music, they have the right to say when and where it’s used, and do not deserve to be attacked for not licensing it, as Murphy did to KoL.
I enjoyed the first half of Season 1, and then it lost it’s original charm (and plot) and I was getting very annoyed with it. Then Murphy started acting like a jerk, and I took that as my cue to quit watching – don’t miss it one bit. There are some very talented people in the cast, but that’s about it.

Ryan Murphy is a total ass… it’s up to the artists whether or not they want their songs made all “white bread and mayonaisse-y” by being sung on the show. It’s not a “privilege” to have a song covered on the show (which is the way he’s thinking).
I watched Glee at the beginning and thought it was cute, but lost interest after the storyline went off-kilter (where is the plotline now.. really?!). Ryan Murphy should be more concerned with the storyline of the show than the songs. Seems that ever since about halfway through the first year, that’s what he’s been focusing on.. the music and nothing else.

I just started watching Glee this week. It’s not great but keeps me entertained while I knit. I’m up to episode 9 (?maybe?) and I am thankful to Glee just because I got the chance to hear Kristen Chenowith sing that song from Cabaret. Gave me shivers. I also loved the version of Dancing With Myself.
But I disrespect Ryan Murphy for not accepting a “no” and acting pissy about it. But maybe that’s the way you get when you’re passionate about a project.
Does anyone remember when some author DIDN’T want his (her?) book to be on Oprah’s Book List, and the world took a collective “Gasp” and clutched their pearls? As if no one in their right mind would refuse HER and possible instant recognition.
It’s easy to sell to the highest bidder for quick wealth/immediate recognition. So I fully respect and support ANYONE who choose to keep a choke hold on THEIR artistic property, because THEY are the one who had the vision, lived with it, and toiled over it, for who knows how long. It’s called INTEGRITY. So maybe THEY want to ensure it isn’t turned into the very thing they DIDN’T want it to be; a showtune sang by obviously 20+ year olds dressed as high school cheerleaders and such on an over-rated, underwritten tv show.
It’s THEIR music, just like it’s HIS show. They have should have absolute say in what happens with it, and a RESPECTFUL no, should be met with equal acceptance.
Don’t know who this guy is, but I love him. And I especially love, (as Kaiser pointed out) that he had his facts down before he hammered that little pursed lip fool, Ryan Murphy.
Dave Grohl is brilliance personified, and he has a truly engaging sense of humor and a self-deprecation that is missing in far too many these days. I love his music, his perfect-pitch lyrics, and his fun videos.

That said I’ve disliked him and the rest of the band since they supported ‘alive and well’-A HIV deniers group. As in HIV doesn’t cause AIDS, you shouldn’t take HIV meds since it doesn’t do anything, and the validity of HIV tests are false. It’s a shame as I do think their music is awesome.

I watched the first season of Glee. Second season, not so much.
Murphy missed a great opportunity to rotate stars on an annual basis to keep the material fresh. How long can high school continue? Graduate Finn-Quinn-Rachel trio. Bring in some new blood.

It’s THEIRS…if they don’t want to share it with Glee, Ryan Murphy needs to shut up, move on and give his attention to the artists who will allow their music to be used on the show.

yes, it was jonathan franzen, who didn’t want his book “the corrections” to be an oprah bookclub book. oprah got a bit high & mighty about it and rescinded his invitation to be on the show. i was on franzen’s side but when he won the national book award he fawned all over oprah in his speech, so both came off rather douchey, IMO.

Both ultimately showed a lack of integrity, I agree. But he still did have a right to refuse without her public pouting, not out of disappointment, but as if wronged (and hey, he might like her, but didn’t want her hype and her name still got a couple more copies sold for him, either way). You can be flattered or offended by an offer, but don’t be a big baby when its refused because you are the “bigger” celebrity (at this time).
But there is a lack of professionalism/decorum in ALL industries, to me.

I HATE Glee, I think it’s the worst show I’ve seen in years. I’m sorry but it is glorified karaoke and most of the time there is barely a storyline. It’s simply a sugary kiss ass musical tribute FULL ON for an hour.

Team Groh I agree crankychica I liked the 1st yr especially the family dynamics of Curt and Finn, but the celebrity guest hosts – Goopy of all people – are ruining it. I don’t foresee it lasting but a few more seasons, and then it and its awful covers will be forgotten. However, as we all know in today’s frenzied media/entertainment environment, you have to cash in quickly – it’s difficult to see how a Cosby Show, Fraser, Friends, Cheers, or Seinfeld could have made it given that they all needed several seasons to get traction.

I love KOL and was curious about the show after the battle with Ryan Murphy. Murphy said they were keeping 7 year olds from watching the show by not sharing their music, or something to that effect. I tuned in with my 7 year old son and the whole show was about sex. I really think Ryan Murphy should pick a new demographic to fight in the name of because it is not appropriate for these little ones. He seems like a total DB and the show sucks.

I liked Glee for a while, but lately it is just getting on my nerves.
I hate both the show and Ryan Murphy as well this season. They had such a wonderful show full of heart and great aspirations. This year they have turned into a pedophile’s dream come true and making children into sluts and calling it cool – they even went so far as to actually use a pedophile’s song to sing pedophile style via Goopy – a man who is banned in 19 countries for raping a 9 & a 10 year old girls. You can’t get more despicable, except Charlie Sheen in my opinion of Ryan Murphy and co. I have officially stopped watching this show and now actively spreading the word of how damaging it is in the “children are sluts and that’s good” message it sends. I don’t care if the real actors are adults – then make a show about adults, they play children and the audience is mostly children. Never mind all the characters are just awful cheaters now.
I love the people here kissing Murphy’s ass. He is LOATHED in Hollywood, but since he has had success and the gay mafia behind him, he has to be feared. Feared is not loved. Love it. I was a huge Nirvana fan and I am still a Foo Fighters fan-I will never be a Glee fan. I barely could get through watching one episode of Glee-(I in all honesty, suffered a major headache at the end of the show.

That’s the main reason why I hate that lousy show so much! I have made the choice: I DO NOT F*CKING WANT TO WATCH that shit yet they push those heinous musical numbers down our throats via endless commercials that sometimes I’m forced to watch because they are aired while I’m watching The Simpsons (or any other Fox Entertainement Television show — in Brazil it’s a cable/satellite channel, not sure about there).
The more people (well-established musicians) say they hate Glee as much as we do, the bigger are the chances this atrocity gets cancelled.

^Dito American Idol. The trouble with the singers on both shows is that although some of them have a wide vocal range none of them know how to interpret a song and sound the same regardless of what they’re singing about. They just hit a few high notes and people think they’re good singers. And don’t get me started on So You Think You Can Dance and there gymnastic floor routines masquerading as dance numbers.

Anyone who says Grohl OR the Foo Fighters need the publicity is obviously living under a rock. The Foo Fighters is not only one of the more critically acclaimed rock bands around, but they also happen to be a huge commercial success, both with their recording and touring endeavors. I wonder if the “Glee” kids could sell out Wembley Stadium in 28 minutes like the Foo Fighters have?
Glee is not made for Foo Fighters fans, so why WOULD Grohl and the guys want their music on the show? It’s all about pop tarts and sex, and every once in a while they trot out Kurt’s dad when they think they need to “send a message” and look like a serious show.
Murphy really needs to check himself.
As a high school teacher, I can’t enjoy a show about the self-important drama of teens (who are all clearly nearly 30), nor about teachers with no boundaries who apparently never actually teach classes.
That show is horrible about women. There is not one female character that is not a ridiculous stereotype. They are all highly shrill and neurotic, conniving schemers, or bimbos. Or they are fat and/or minority (no other personality needed then)
And that snotty Kurt character makes me want to punch things.
That show is the worst.
Glee is on a downward spiral, the clock is ticking. And Ryan Murphy is an idiot.
I agree with coffeetalk, here. Even though I totally agree with the spirit of what he’s saying in that he does not owe himself to anyone and politicizing that refusal into a smear campaign based on the imaginary, that kind of smoking in the boy’s room posturing–it’s so prosaic. True, Murphy has one of the most expquisitely punchable Princess of Pout face that brings out the pugilist in me.
You’d think that at this stage in the game, he would look at the pattern of rise and decline which is persistant not only in him, but in so many of the current slate of super show runners.
It’s this odd affliction that dogs David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrahms and Josh Schwartz et al, I’ll assume, in that they’ll have an idea, it’ll explode one day, the next day all focus and connections to the central premise get maimed or killed, the next day they stop even paying attention to the show and the next day they’re caught cavorting with a younger, sexier spec script. And the erstwhile darling? That gets stuck with clip shows and schedule changes too frequent to save viewing figures and it’s Throw Popular off the Train time.
Here’s an idea: Ryan Murphy needs to leave school so he can learn to act like an adult and Dave Grohl should consider going back to one so that he can learn to speak like one. I agree with him but, oh my days that was beyond irritating. It’s like an Edina/Patsy-Saffron exchange without the LaCroix and falling.
*sigh*. I wish Patsy Stone would adopt me.
Zelda, I totally agree about the women on the show being written poorly. Only the male characters are layered and complex.

I remember the Slash comments. They were so damn funny because from a rocker’s perspective this whole scene must be jaw dropping.
How the hell could anybody call Slash washed up when they’re begging for his tunes and he’s still going strong. Ryan Murphy deserved this:

“Actually, we got asked about that once already but it got turned down,” he says.
“In the current climate of what’s going on in entertainment these days, I try to be more optimistic than negative because it’s really easy to get negative about it, but I draw the line at Glee. Glee is worse than Grease and Grease is bad enough…. Ouch.
Dave Grohl’s best moment for me was when he called bedraggled Southern Rock wannabe American Idol Runner up Bo Bice “Skynnerdy.” That was even before his coke arrest. I liked Bo, but Dave hit the mark on that one.
I am so down with Dave Grohl right now for stickin it to Ryan Murphy. As everyone has said, he is an uberdouche – I am so sick of all the glee episodes being taken over by homosexuality – dont get me wrong, I love that Glee is doing something about addressing the issues faced by teens who are different, and a lot of that is homosexual teens who are being treated like crap for being homosexual….but every episode glorying Kurt and his whiny ways is stupid – I get the impression Kurt is like a mini-Ryan Murphy, and all he ever does it whine “why me?” and attack everyone for being homophobic when they arent, as though any criticism of Kurt is a homophobic attack.
Heres what I truly, truly hate about Murphy though. He is the worlds biggest, douchiest hypocrite. Where he is so supportive of the gay community and their trials and tribulations, he week in, week out goes to town on other minorities, the two coming to mind now are christians and virgins.
Holly actually insinuated that Rachel and Quinn were “frigid” the other week because they didnt want to have sex in high school – frigid is the universally used term by high school guys trying to shame girls into having sex, lest they be “diseased” with frigidity….lets all hurl together, whilst marvelling at how Murphy has just made the huge amount of high schoolers feel even more pressured.
As for Christians, yes, there is scope for poking some fun at over-zealous, uber conservative Christians – but where has there ever been a balance shown of how there are also normal Christians, or Christians who are treated like crap in high school as well? Nowehere, thats where. Murphy is either rolling out the Christian hypocritical stereotype each week, or he is presenting it as a crap religion full of falseness and tripe.
I Love Dave and always have!! good for him, no one should bully you in to giving your music. especially not the writer/creator (whatever he is)of a show that deals with bullys!
Two thumbs up for David Grohl!! That tv show should be banned for stupidity and promoting homosexuality in a very stereotypical manner..
People shouldn’t assume that heterosexual male celebrities are incapable of being homophobic. Anyone in the music industry should be flattered if a successful television series asks to use their music. As musicians you’re lucky you have a career at all. You could be polite if you don’t want to be a part of it, and not act like an arrogant douche.

The KOL’s guys were polite when they refused it (to have their song featured there). Ryan Murphy then called them “assholes” and told them to f*ck off — just because of that, because they said no.
It was only after he twittered the insults that the band’s drummer (I think) made those rude remarks that, in my opinion, were more mysoginistic than homophobic.
There are heteressoxual celebrities who are extremely homophobic — the problem is that when you (generically speaking) start accusing everyone of being a homophobe because they don’t agree with you, then that’s just wrong. And that’s exactly what Murphy did.

I really disagree with that statement. People are entitled to feel protective about their work, and they — who are the authors, who composed the song in the first place — have every freaking right to do so.

@Mario You make it sound as though musicians are below television in some way, which is odd. 99% of what is on tv is absolute junk. Why WOULD any musician capable of writing meaningful music be grateful to crap like Glee or American Idol for liking their songs? Okay, there are a few brilliant TV shows (HBO, mostly) and there is meaningless throwaway junk music (Spears, Rihanna, etc) But on the whole, how can one say that television is somehow more respectable than music?
In 20 years, no one is going to give a sh*t about Glee. Foo Fighters albums have a much better chance. And I’m not even really a Foo Fighters fan.
I any case, why would anyone want anything they do to be associated with something they hate? Just to get on tv? ridiculous.
The best bit of the whole article was the fact that Dave Grohl relayed the whole story of Murphy’s spats with Slash and KoL to Taylor Hawkins and Taylor’s all, “Yeah, F**k that sh*t!” Hilarious!
I Love foo fighters, I just got tickets to see them at the Hangout music festival i cant wait.
Foo-Fighters are probably the most over-rated band in the last 20 years. Their recent stuff is just a re-hash of their early material, and Slash, well if you think he is the greatest, you are just old!
I’m not the biggest fan of Glee, but I think it is pretty good, considering the amount of time they do each episode in. It’s not terrible. These rock stars think they will lose their “Cool” factor if they say they like it, and they can’t have that.
