I’ve been extremely near-sighted for as long as I can remember. I used to wear contacts all of the time, but as I get older and work from home every day, I just wear my fug glasses since no one is going to see me. I desperately need new frames, but I have the worst time, historically speaking, picking out frames that will flatter my round face. I always end up choosing glasses like these, the frames Anne Hathaway is wearing. While the frames are – on their own – kind of cute, on Anne they seem too big, right? Anne is just like me: she struggles to find frames that will flatter her face too. Funny, that just makes me like her more.
So here’s Anne at last night’s premiere of Rio, wearing her dorky, oversized frames and a rather pretty Gucci Spring 2011 dress. I tend to think this is Anne’s appeal, at least her appeal for women – she’s very pretty (sometimes a tad squirrelly) but she reminds us all of the friend we have who could be very pretty if only she would just wear her contacts and wear something flattering. Anne is totally that girl. Women look at her and we picture ourselves giving her a makeover during a sleepover. After the makeover, we’ll watch The Notebook and eat popcorn. Totally.
Shoe porn… I don’t really like the shoes, though. And they are WAY too matchy-matchy with the dress.
And just a touch of Rodrigo Santoro, licking his lips. In case you wanted your biscuits to tingle this morning.

She is super fugly no matter what she wears.
This look totally works for her. She has large, exaggerated features & the glasses distract from it. Anne is one of those people that doesn’t translate well in stills. She looks much better in motion.
i love those glasses on her but not with that dress, if she was dressed down then ok but you can’t wear cool-nerd glasses with a cocktail dress, it looks silly.
I think she picked those frames because she thought they made her look all quirky and cute, when in fact they reinforce her perpetual “miss” on the fashion front. Unless someone’s styling her for the big shows- Anne looks goofy. I really liked her in The Devil Wears Prada, but that’s about all the Anne love I have.
Dorky but she’s still cute.
… this was me in high school.
@Violet: ITA. I’m a glasses wearer (contacts hurt my eyes), so I’m all about proudly sporting frames – but I think it just looks silly w/ the fancy frock. It looks try too hard here. They would be cute w/ a more casual look.
I don’t think the glasses work with the dress. If she had on a suit, they would probably look good, or even jeans and a button down blouse and sandals, but the dress is way too sexy for the glasses. But there are somedays you just have to wear glasses. Still, if she had to wear glasses that day, she should have worn some smaller black frames a la Tina Fey.
@Violet I was thinking the same thing! She is beautiful and those glasses actually makes her prettier. I don’t particularly like the dress but ..I mean, I completely hate the dress. I think it’s horrible. The shoes..meh, they’re kind of cheap.
It really annoys me when celebrities wear dorky glasses, as if they feel the need to downplay themselves. There’s something so condescending about that.
I like the glasses and I like them on her. They do not go with the dress.
But then what does go with “whorehouse lampshade”?
Ughhhhhhh I hatehatehate people in general, but especially celebrities, who wear fake glasses. Seriously.
Unless she is actually short/long-sighted, then those frames are fugly.
The glasses on its own looks lovely, but on her it looks like a lil’ gurl wears her mama’s glasses!!! not good!
I think Anne is pretty, but when I see her in those glasses, it makes me want to watch reruns of MatchGame on the Gameshow Network…

Aww, I think they’re adorable. But I agree with @Violet – she should have paired them with a cute little librarian-esque skirt and sweater or something. Even the dorkiest of us manage to suck it up and wear the contacts with the cocktail dress.
But I do love love the glasses on her. She just looks so cute and friendly.
THAT is a horrible dress
She reminds me of Shelly Duvall.
Hello, the 80’s called. They want their big dumb glasses back!
Did Rachel Zoe do this?
Aw c’mon. Anne’s cute as hell.
TXCinderella@ Thank you Hate these big dumb ass glasses too and I hate when celebrities wear them epically the once that don’t need them it does not make them look smart just foolish. If you’re not under 17,over 60 or are Sylvia Weinstock famous cake maker then make it stop.
Why are they trying to bring those 70s-80s frames back? They look idiotic.
I don’t really think the glasses go with the dress, but she gets a pass there, although the shoes are awful.
Annoying poseur. I feel like I should like her more than I actually do, so maybe I’m too biased, but no, I hate this look
I think they are cute in a dorky kind of way.
Cute.
I see any movie she makes because the camera loves her face. Pale skin, dark gorgeous hair, beautiful lips and dark expressive eyes. So many of these young actresses have no “it” factor on screen and don’t get how they are on the A list. And Anne is a really excellent actress. The glasses work. But her dress, ugh.
the shoes n d dress just dont go…..mbaaaaaaaaa(in my native dialect)
@Heather and @Sue: They’re not ‘fake’ glasses. Anne Hathaway actually wears glasses frequently–she pulls them out at nearly every awards show to read the teleprompter.
I usually wear contacts because I’m super near-sighted. But sometimes I like to change it up and wear glasses. I have a cute funky pair for casual clothes and professional-looking ones for work. I think these frames look cute on her, but as others said they don’t match the dress. I see glasses as another accessory like shoes or jewelry that should coordinate with the rest of the look–these look silly paired with a cocktail dress, but would look great with a more quirky, casual outfit.
@ # 12 – Heather: Maybe you need glasses too, to see that Anne is actually near-sighted.
I think her frames are much too big though.
Those frames are too clunky and casual (and cheap looking) for evening wear. After looking past Anne Hathaway I liked the dress, but AH makes every thing look “square”, as in “not cool”.
bad.
Glasses OK, dress awful
Love the dress. Glasses are cure on her too. Just don;t like them together.
Someone once told me and it’s always stuck: She has a size 5 face and size 9 features. Right?!
I think those glasses make her nose look big, like those glasses with the big nose attached, a la Groucho Marx.
The shoes are kind of pretty but VERY silly, you can see they are propelling her forward at a ridiculous angle – how can that be good for your feet or your back?
I’m a sucker for anything purple. Love the entire outfit, shoes, glasses, the works. It helps that it’s being worn by Anne. If it was worn by, say, Abbie Cornish or Cameron Diaz I might not like it as much.
Kind of cute, but hate the dress. Though if we were still in the 80’s the glasses & dress combo would have been totally fine. 0_o
Hhahahahh this is just hilarious, those glasses, what was she thinking ?
Cute girl, ugly dress.
I hate hipster glasses, but she still looks adorable.
I had these glasses in the 80’s and wouldn’t be caught dead wearing them today. She looks stupid. Why is she going out of her way to look ugly. Her bugs bunny teeth do not sit well with those hideous glasses. Not cute.
Glasses are dorky sure but I think they suit her face. Reminds me that I need a new pair of frames myself.
I love the glasses! Its a cute look
WOW, the glasses work like on Claire Forlani in Mall Rats and Jennifer Garner on Felicity. They actually help the eyes to focus on how stunning this girl is. Please, no more shots of naked feet in open toed shoes!
She is cute but the glasses and dress are a freaking disaster.
Oversized glasses are big right now, and I love the geek-chicness of it.
I think she’s really appealing on a lot of levels, actually. Those “princess diaries” movies were awful. But I want to see her really succeed as an actress. I could be wrong, but she “seems” genuine and nice. And she’s not bad to look at, either.
