‘Bridesmaids’ trailer released with just a taste of Jon Hamm (update)

A new-style chick flick is on the way to a multiplex near you, ladies. On May 13, the Judd Apatow-produced Bridesmaids promises to banish romcom sterotypes forever. While this isn’t a movie that I’d willingly watch, I think it will do incredibly well in theaters. After all, the target audience includes every woman who’s currently engaged to be married as well as her entire bridal party. However, since this is an Apatow movie, the tradeoff from romcom clichés necessarily includes plenty of gross-out jokes and crude, raunchy humor. This sort of adult-oriented immaturity is also to be expected from this particular ensemble cast:

When you choose Kristen Wiig as your maid of honor, you know things are going to get crazy.

Wiig, who has brought to life some of the past decade’s funniest characters on “Saturday Night Live,” takes the leading role in a creation of her own, writing and starring in the upcoming film “Bridesmaids.”

She plays the goofy yet miserably single mid-30’s best friend of former “SNL’ cast Maya Rudolph, who giddily asks her to be the maid of honor at her wedding. Jealous yet determined to do her best, Wiig tries to bring a misfit crew of bridesmaids together for a bachelorette party and the other traditional pre-wedding planning and rituals.

Unfortunately, it tends to end in vomit and/or disaster.

Ellie Kemper of “The Office” and Rose Byrne co-star as two of the bridesmaids, and Jon Hamm joins as well. The film is directed by Paul Feig, best known as the creator of the cult classic “Freaks and Geeks,” and is being produced by Judd Apatow, famous for his guy-centric gross out comedies.

In addition to the above mentioned ladies, Jon Hamm also appears in a small role that’s visible at the end of the trailer. Honestly though, I wouldn’t have realized that it was Hamm if Kaiser hadn’t informed me as much with an added aside: “The Hamm loves the ladies.” While this may indeed be true (he does seem rather accommodating), I’m slightly concerned that he’s whoring himself out to too many substandard movies at such a rapid rate. Sure, we all love him in “Mad Men,” and he was great in The Town as well, but Sucker Punch and The A-Team? Really. Still, here’s hoping for a better outcome with the new theatrical trailer for Bridesmaids:

UPDATE BY KAISER: Bedhead didn’t use the right trailer with the appearance by Jon Hamm. He’s in this one, below, near the end:

Ugh – hate that the article doesn’t even mention Melissa McCarthy(Mike and Molly, and freakin Gilmore Girls!) and Wendi McLendon-Covey(Reno 911). All three of those shows are/were big hits, and the mention would draw in more people.

Those two are hilarious – and I’m guessing they got left out because Melissa’s heavy and Wendi isn’t a hot young twig-figured thang. Grrrrr.

  2. Denver Danni says:

I admit, I got excited when I saw this trailer. So many people I love – Melissa McCarthy especially even though I wasn’t a huge fan of her sit-com. Kristen Wiig is one of the best comedic actresses working.

  3. devilgirl says:

It’s not Jon Hamm at the end of the trailer.

  4. Heather says:

I wanna see it 😀 This is a total drink with your girlfriends kinda movie.

  5. Ben says:

I’m actually really excited about this. I looove Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne. Plus added Wiig and Rudolph goodness.

  6. mln76 says:

I love raunchy humour but this doesn’t actually look funny. I think I’ll skip this ’till Netflix.

  7. Phoenix says:

    Is that ACTUALLY Jon Hamm?

edit: I just watched another trailer for this film with Jon Hamm in it, and the guy at the end definitely isn’t him.

  8. devilgirl says:

The actor at the end of the trailer is Brian Petsos.

  9. this is gonna me female hangover

  10. Head Shops says:

    female hangover lol

  11. Missy says:

Do you think ‘Bridesmaids’ has the potential to be as funny as ‘The Hangover’? Not even close. But it still might be interesting; I LOVE the cast, though. A lot of the funniest women on television. Ellie Kemper in particular is adorable.

By the way, I missed Jon Hamm in the trailer. Where is he?

  12. Kaiser says:

I updated – the second trailer has Jon Hamm at the end.

  13. Missy says:

Thanks, Kaiser. The second trailer is significantly better in my opinion.

  14. BW says:

Well, I’ve obviously seen all the good bits. No need to watch the actual movie.

  15. Elizabeth says:

I love it. I am single and 10 years older than them. I would go with my girlfriends.

  16. ruby says:

Anyone who says the guy in bed with Kristen Wiig at the end of trailer being invited to the wedding is NOT Jon Hamm needs a new pair of contacts!

  17. Sue says:

I love it all the ladies in my office are going to see it for a girl’s night out.

  18. Sunday says:

    Honestly? Looks like shit…

  19. Zoya says:

Looks rather corny/shitty tbh. I’m really sick of how female comedy movies are always about weddings and crap.

  20. feebee says:

I think it’s about time the chicks got to do the raunchy gross humour, unless I missed a previous attempt?

I think (really hoping) it’ll be a laugh and it’ll be better in a theatre than home on the couch. Though sometimes I’m the one laughing in an otherwise quiet theatre………… nevermind.

  21. tori says:

ha, the girl from mike and molly is the scene stealer.

  22. Kristin says:

    ELLIE KEMPER!!! 😀

  23. FluffyPrincess says:

I’ve seen a rough cut of this movie and all the bridesmaids are awesome. (Obviously that includes Maya and Kristen ) Really solid comedic performances all around.

My personal favorites were Wendi McLendon-Covey and Melissa McCarthy–they are absolutely hilarious in the movie. To me, Melissa McCarthy nearly steals the movie out from under everyone. It’s like how Russell Brand’s “Aldous Snow” really made “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” such a fun film.

  24. Betsy says:

I saw the preview in the theater this weekend and people (including me) were laughing. I will see it when it comes out because CHICKS RULE, baby!

  25. OtherChris says:

I’m going to go see this, but I can quote much of “The Water Boy” so I’m probably not the most sophisticated movie fan there is.

  26. Becky says:

It’s nice to see a raunchy comedy (not a romcom!) with female leads for a change.

  27. chasingadalia says:

There’s no way it could be worse than The Hangover, so I might actually see it.

  28. W.O.M. says:

Having watched both trailers, I now know the entire plot and Wiig’s character will OBVIOUSLY end up w/ the cop. I wish it were produced by anyone other then Judd Apatow — he’s an unfunny misogynist.

  29. kg says:

    looks refreshing
    hate romcoms
    maya rudolph is the lord

  30. ToastedSkin says:

I don’t think it’s gonna be that big of hit. I love Wiig and all but this doesnt look super hilarious or anything.
