This weekend was a roaring one at movie theaters, where Thor easily secured the #1 position with an estimated $66 million in U.S. ticket sales (with international sales boosting it to a total of $242 million), which qualifies it as a fairly successful “summer” movie. Between this film, the Iron Man franchise, and the inexplicably successful X-Men movies, Marvel Studios really has the box-office sewn up as far as comic-book adaptations go, while any viable D.C. Comics titles loom far off in the horizon with the Superman reboot and The Dark Knight Rises still in their pre-production phases. At any rate, Thor and his abdominal muscles pretty much killed it this weekend, and while I was pretty skeptical about a newcomer (or, at least, a virtually unknown actor) carrying a major studio tentpole, I will concede that an effective marketing blitz (and inflated 3D prices) really did the trick in boosting Thor to this point:
Reviews have been good, and British Kenneth Branagh’s direction and Aussie newcomer Chris Hemsworth in the title role of The Mighty Thor earned a 92% rating currently on Rotten Tomatoes. The good-looking Hemsworth allowed for heavy PR to drum up appeal among women with his shirtless clip a popular choice for talk shows with large female audiences who also were targeted with a Royal Wedding blitz. To solidify male appeal, Paramount had spots during the Super Bowl and NCAA Basketball, the UFC Marathon and UFC Fight Night Live Premiere. And, to appeal to the feeble-brained, Thor ads aired on the finale of Jersey Shore.
Thor launched in 1962 and has endured for almost half a century across comics, toys, animated series, and now a movie. Like Iron Man, Marvel thought Thor deserved to be made in its own right and lends a long history to The Avengers. (Aka Marvel’s Avengers Assemble strategy. Expect to see agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., previously seen in the Iron Man movies, foreshadowing the coming of The Avengers). The challenge for Paramount was to market a reverse superhero story: a hero becomes a man. “Our challenge was to emphasize what was unique about his character and define him for audiences,” a studio exec told me. So the TV ads reminded: “The world has many heroes but only one is a God.” This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard with the powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Elsewhere, the Vin Diesel/Dwayne Johnson homoerotic picture of the decade, Fast Five, held onto #2. Even though it’s springtime, the weekend’s two wedding-themed movies didn’t fare so well, with Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed (starring Kate Hudson and her nympho ways), scoring #3 with $13.7 million and #4 with $13.2 million, respectively speaking. Meanwhile, The Beaver opened in 22 theaters with only $104,000 total under its already dubious belt. In other words, it probably won’t be opening next weekend in your nearest multiplex, and now Jodie Foster has only herself to blame (and not race psychology) for wasting a $20 million budget on a movie about a guy who’s so depressed that he can only speak though a puppet. Hopefully, this also means she’ll stop praising Mel Gibson for awhile too.

Hes so hot… Id ALMOST make him my forever dong instead of channing.
My husband is a big comic book fan, so we went to see it. Besides the obvious eye candy, it was a good story and movie.
What I liked most about the film was the british humour, sometimes even without words.
The guy is Hot, and having Natalie in the movie did not hurt, either.
Does THOR help or hurt Green Lantern?
Thor, yummmy. Did not like Thor in the comics much but me likey the Thor character now (or at least who played Thor).
I went to see this on Saturday not expecting much at all.
I love comic book movies but they can be really disappointing like The Fantastic Four or Elektra. But they’re sometimes adapted really well, like Batman & Iron Man.
This is one of the better ones.
Chris Hemsworth shines!
He really confidently carried the movie and it’s because of him that movie succeeds. Aside from the excellent special affects the script’s really good too. The action’s fast paced and there are laughs aplenty.
There was obvious chemistry between him and Natalie Portman. The supporting cast was great too, particularly Tom Hiddleston who was fantastic as Loki and of course Anthony Hopkins is badass as Odin- BUTCHA NOT…KING!
I wouldn’t go so far as some people saying it’s the best Marvel movie so far. But it’s high up on the list.
Lots of pics of nice muscley men in this post…I think out of the three of them (Thor guy, Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson) I’d have to go with Vin Diesel. Something about him has always made me go, “Yum.”
And John Krasinski (I hope I spelled that right) is just super adorable. Face and personality.
Oddly enough, I felt so much more empathy towards the “bad brother” character, Loki.
Maybe ’cause it was played by a better actor.
Does anyone know if there’s going to be a sequel?
Thank you for those manly flesh pics. Already turning out to be a bad week. I needed some hot men to help me through the next hours.
X-Men is a Marvel comic, but not owned by Marvel Studios, 20th Century Fox owns the rights to X-Men.
@RocketMerry: “Does anyone know if there’s going to be a sequel?”
The character of Thor will definitely be appearing in next year’s Avengers movie, alongside the Hulk, Iron Man & The Black Widow (& Captain America?), and I’m guessing they’ll be a sequel because a). It’s made enough money & b). If you hung around until after the credits there’s a scene where Samuel L. Jackson pops up to interrogate Stellan Skarsgard, who’s clearly under the influence of the voice of an unseen and not-dead Loki, about some mystery object, thus setting us up for a follow-up. Probably.
I found Loki weirdly attractive but If i got my hands on Chris Hemsworth I would never let go. Oh and the movie wasn’ bad. Not great but not bad either.
i saw THOR(not a good movie but it’s funny)& FAST5(the scene with the cars & strong-box is the reason to see this too long &generic action movie)
Watched ‘Thor’ twice last week. Shirtless!Chris gives me butterflies in the stomach. Loved the movie and I’m not a graphic novel fan; I was confused about Green Arrow/Jeremy Renner’s 30 second cameo, then went online and found out the Renner character is called “Bullseye”. Why are there two comic-book/hero archers in the Justice League? Or is Bullseye Greenarrow’s orginal alter-ego?
*sigh* I don’t have the energy or the enthusiasm to look it up. I watched X-Men for the action and aci-fi elements; I’m not a comic book/graphic novel reader.
BTW to anyone else who goes and sees ‘Thor’… there is a bonus scene after the credits. Six minutes of credits, but it is an important scene that apparently ties together the end of the last hulk movie, to this Thor film and then on to next year’s “Avengers” film. I had no idea what the heck was going on, but still, remember to wait for the credits to end because it’s a two minute scene.
crap! i totally forgot about the after the credit preview! i took my boyfriend to see it over the weekend. he thinks it’s adorable the way i geek out on comic movies.
WRT Jumping The Broom/Something Borrowed.
Jumping the Broom was made for 6 million dollars and had very little marketing. The studio is ecstatic that it made what it did. They had only estimated 9-10 million dollars.
But more telling, is that it beat out the similarly themed Something Borrowed.
Something Borrowed, otoh, has to be a bit disappointed. It made less than the studio predicted (they were hoping for 18 million). It was made for 35 million and was expected to do better because it had a built in fan base because it was based on a best-selling book, had an aggressive marketing and had bigger name recognition in the cast.
@tapioca
Damn, I missed the bonus scene…Well, good to know. Thanks!
“The Avengers” will film partly in the Cincinnati area. I found that little tidbit out yesterday. I’ll be stalking all the sites…LOL Can’t wait…Love me some Chris H.!!!
ew! diesel’s got a slack jaw…i fuggin’ HATE that on a man! 🙁
Can’t wait to see the movie! I think this was a wise choice of leading actor 😀
Thanks for the hint about the scene aftr the movie. I see it tomorrow.
Will Thor help or hurt Green Lantern.
Chris looks hot and rugged, while RR looks hot, and cute. I guess it’s a matter of choice. Natalie Portman is a much better actress than Blake Lively in my opinion.
I don’t think I’ll watch this…probably not, even though I love Loki (the character). I’m too traumatized by Portman in Dark Duck to watch anything with her again (at least in the next months).
Anyway, I can’t see this guy’s (Hemsworth) appeal. People with small eyes (and to make it worse, that are set too close together) turn me off.
But he’s got some moves:

Glad to see I’m not the only one who walked away from Thor with a crush on Loki…Thanks for the mini HGF.
i loved Thor… but i did not see the need for 3D besdides the studio wanting to get the extra bucks. missed the extra scene at the end 🙁 may be it will turn up on YouTube
As a child I was ENTHRALLED with Norse mythology…Baulder, Loki, Hemdall…MAN!!!
So, I am looking forward to seeing this…and I love me some Kenny B. as a director…so that just puts a cherry on top of an already good sundae (uhhmm…sundae…I see Culver’s in my near future)…
BTW…Loki was always my favorite too…
o my god, my jaw dropped and for the rest of the night, i totally thought of motorboating him… with my legs between his chest that is…
That 92% rating on RT surprised me, I wouldn’t have bet on that movie. But it is also weird that Brannagh directed it.
Well, I guess I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Edit: RT now rates it at 79%, mmh…
Saw Thor and Hemsworth is so gorgeous who really cares about the plot.
They showed previews of Green Lantern and I am not feeling Ryan Reynolds in that role. I think RR is hot but he does not look good in that green get up and silly mask. He looks kinda…effeminate.
@KatScorp – Renner’s character was Hawkeye – who is Marvel Comic’s archer vs DC’s Green Arrow one. Hawkeye will probably appear in next year’s “The Avengers” movie (Marvel), while Green Arrow is part of the Justice League (DC Comics).
Bullseye is a Daredevil foe who was played by Colin Farrell in the movie of the same name. (Marvel)
@Bedhead- the Green Lantern movie coming out is a DC character, so they do have that on the horizon. (though, personally, it looks kinda cheesy to me – I hope I’m wrong about that.)
Yes, I’m a comic book geek. LOL
That being said, I’m not really into the Thor comic book, but was familiar enough with it to get into the movie. LOVED this movie! It was fun, action packed, had a few winks towards the comic book fan base (Hawkeye’s cameo being one of them) and Chris Hemsworth was awesome in the role – I think he carried the movie. Not to mention is now my new “dong for life” dream. *sigh*
Chris Hemsworth for HGF please!
Yay for Chris with a big hit movie 😀 . Also: yum.
My hubby thinks Thor looked awful going by the trailer alone, but I still plan to see it anyway- when it comes out on DVD.
Thor is super fun from beginning to end. And Anthony Hopkins is perfectly cast as Odin. It grew on me and by the next day, I liked it even more. Chris’ body is a thing of beauty but I can’t help but think of James Hetfield and Dog the Bounty Hunter when I see his face. Not good. The chemistry between Thor and Jane (Portman) is charming and natural. The laughs are good, not cheesy like most blockbuster attempts at humor. Kenneth Branaugh inspired the necessary gravitas. I’d see it again for the ride, and I don’t often say that.
Although I won’t see it in theaters (I’ll be damned before I spend $10-12 to watch 1 freaking movie), I am actually interested in seeing this movie, just based on the fact that Kenneth Branaugh directed it.
I’ve admired his acting ever since I saw his movie “The Proposition” (I looooooved him in that movie…but poor Neil Patrick Harris).
If anyone wants to see a good KB movie, please rent “The Proposition”. You won’t be disappointed.
That bod could almost get me past Portman, but not yet.
Lotta hot guys in this flick though … but world’s most awarded “face dancer” Portman, yeesh.
@ Harley: LMAO I can be such a dumbass. I love the Director’s Cut of “Daredevil” so I should have know that. Wow, two archers and two superhero groups? DC versus Marvell?
I guess I know need to go to the local (and first in this area) comic book store because I’m rather curious what happens if Green Lantern (edit: snerk. I know it’s wrong but I wanna leave it! Arrow, Arrow, Arrow!) and Hawkeye have it out; I only know about the GA because I watched Smallville circa seasons 1-6.
Green Arrow… Green Lantern. How can people keep track? I’ll just have to remember Hawkeye as Angel’s childe from the ‘Sonambulist’ episode… Green Arrow as the that lickable blonde guy from Passions… and Green Lantern was in a pizza themed T.V. show with Captain Tightpants.
Even Johnny can’t compare with MY mnenomic devices 🙂
I appreciated the eyecandy, but I would have been just as happy with some looped footage of the guy shirtless and grinning. The story was so flat as to be non-existant, and I have never (as far as I remember) seen such cardboard characterisation in a mainstream movie.
Oh. My. God. Chris Hemsworth is ridiculous. Yes please.
You understand therefore significantly relating to this topic, produced me individually consider it from a lot of varied angles. Its like women and men aren’t interested unless it is something to accomplish with Lady gaga! Your personal stuffs excellent. At all times deal with it up!
