This news came out yesterday, but there are more details today and I couldn’t resist covering it. Apparently Hugh Grant was in talks with Two and a Half Men producers to step in and take the kind of playboy devil-may-care role that was formerly occupied by addict wordsmith Charlie Sheen. As Kaiser wrote in the links, this was a genius idea and a potential win-win that would help this lucrative sitcom continue on with another high profile lead. Grant has been starring in some sh*t movies lately (have you seen Did You Hear About The Morgans?, I did and just for Grant) and his film career has stalled but he still has star power. Unfortunately talks are said to have broken down over the intense work commitment involved, but I’m hoping that he’ll reconsider or that someone leaked this news to gauge interest. With Grant in this show, I’d definitely watch it despite the corny jokes. I still own Four Weddings and a Funeral on VHS. (shameface)
We hear that the idea of Hugh Grant as a replacement for Charlie Sheen in Two And A Half Men was first pitched to CBS boss Les Moonves and CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler about a month ago. After a couple of weeks sorting out the Sheen lawsuit fallout, the two execs blessed the plan and Grant was approached by the producers at Warner Bros. We hear Hugh flew in and had 2 creative meetings. Things were progressing and he had all but a completed deal when he backed out unexpectedly. ‘It was not the money. He didn’t want to do TV because those 24 episodes are a grind and a lot of work. At the end he couldn’t get his head around doing a series.” Another insider tells us that, if Grant committed, “the show could have gotten another 3 to 4 more seasons”.
[From Deadline Hollywood]
Initial reports had Grant being offered $1 million an episode, although Deadline has updated with the news that “Warner Bros sources are now saying it was not that much.” The guy has a complicated relationship with fame, and doesn’t like to be in the spotlight at all. He’s been in altercations with paparazzi and recently audiotaped a conversation with a paparazzo after getting him to open up about News of The World routinely bugging celebrities.
I would bet that Grant was just as daunted by the pressure of helming a big series as by the work commitment. Plus, rumor has it that his girlfriend is expecting a baby. (Which could be patently untrue, but still.) It’s a shame, because he’s a fine actor and I’ve missed seeing him on the big screen. I’d watch any crap movie he was in, including a crap show.

I adore Hugh Grant and I would watch the episodes of Two and a Half Men with him in it. I am curious to see how they would spin it. Absolutely fabulous choice
I think he’s a great actor but still couldn’t bring myself to watch Two and a Half Men.
I agree, he needs to get back on the big screen with some good stuff!
He looks old….
lol @ the last pic with the lady trying to touch him and the face he’s giving. I’ve really never been able to understand that. I’ve never tried to touch a celeb it just seems rude to me. You wouldn’t touch a random person you don’t know.
Too bad, I love him.
Maybe they could get some new writers involved also?
I LOVE him. I wish he would do it. Or at least make more movies!!!!
Can’t STAND this guy.
I think it’s a good match – Hugh is at a point in his career where a regular TV gig must look pretty good. Even more so if he’s about to be a father – it’s better for a family with young children to be in one place, with its chief wage earner in a reliable weekly shooting schedule, as opposed to chasing all over the world on movie sets, Jolie-Pitt style.
I have seen every movie he has ever been in and I’d actually watch the show if he was cast.
Do you want to hear shame? I watched Sense and Sensibility last Friday night while my bf had friends over for the hockey game.
And I CRIED. Sobbing, hysterical tears for Elinor when she found out Edward was engaged to Lucy. And I do this every time I watch the movie even though I know they end up together.
Sigh. Hugh Grant for HGF!
Are you serious, Two and Half Men? He is a motion picture and theater actor. The show is over, done, move on.
I love Hugh and I actually would watch that crappy show for the first time ever if he was on it(at least one episode).
he’d be perfect! I’d love to see him do it!! I hope they can come up with a deal that persuades him to do it.
Oh, I would become a die hard fan of that show if Hugh was in it. That would be brilliant. Unfortunately I just can’t see that he will do it. It’s not like he needs the money.
CB, why the shameface over Four Weddings and a Funeral?? I own it proudly (although in DVD format). It is a brilliant movie, only marred by Andie McDowell’s somewhat uneven performance.
He does have a certain charm, doesn’t he?
It’s hard to picture him doing the broad comedy of a TV sitcom. His acting seems very understated to me and it’s hard to see how it would translate on the small screen. He is a very funny interview on the late night talk shows, though. I like him a lot.
He’s a movie actor. Just that. I don’t see him doing show and all, it’s not Hugh-like (as far as I came to understood him).
Firstly he really seem too lazy to do some kind of difficult work like a tv show (and maybe old). And I don’t think he’ll rocks.
I love him but this really would have put him down.
Like he’d be cleaning after Sheen’s ass/messes.
HELL NO.
He does seem lazy, but I’ve heard a multi-camera sitcom is about the easy job in Hollywood. Plus it comes with a gigantic payday.
I don’t really care who they hire, I don’t watch and won’t ever, but I want them to find someone and have the show be a big success, just to rub Charlie Sheen’s face in it.
update: Hollywood Reporter and Deadline just announced Ashton Kutcher is taking over the role and will be announced at NBC upfronts next week.
I would actually WATCH the show if Grant came onboard. Sheen’s smugness is annoying. Grant’s is endearing. If anyone could save that show, it would be Grant. Bring him on as the brothers’ cousin from across the pond. If it’s Kutcher who will be taking over, then I’ll continue my habit of not watching the show. Ugh.
I would watch it like a religion if they put Hugh Grant on it,pl’s, pl’s, pl’s.But not douchebag Ashton, are you kidding me?Is’t it enough he tortured us w/his lame acting for a long time in That’s 70 show.
this sucks i like charlie seen,i want charlie back i want,i want charlie back
