Jon Cryer admits he thought Charlie Sheen was going to die

Jon Cryer is and will always be a class act even if he does star on one of the most throwaway (and inexplicably successful) shows on television. He’s such a self-effacing guy, who can joke on one hand that he checked TMZ to see what Charlie Sheen was up to during those months of cocaine-filled briefcases, hookers, and nonsensical rants; yet he can still candidly admit that he had no idea that Sheen would derail so quickly when it came down to the wire. To promote the new season of “Two and a Half Men” (alongside his new co-star, Ashton Kutcher), Cryer sat for an interview to the Hollywood Reporter. While he makes it quite clear he reached out to Charlie Sheen during that infamous time period, Cryer also states for the record that the two actors have not spoken since their last day on set together. Charlie’s loss, right? Here’s a few other relevant excerpts:

On His New “Two and a Half Men” Co-Star: It’s kind of fun. It’s a very different dynamic that they’ve set up between Alan and Ashton’s character. It completely works.

How He Felt When Charlie Got Fired: A combination of shock and sadness because this wasn’t the way anybody wanted the show to end. And then fear — because at that point, let’s face it, I didn’t know if Charlie was going to be living another week.

On His Reaction To Ashton Signing On: My gut reaction was, I have no idea what that show is going to be like. [Laughs.] But the weird thing for me was this mythology that was created about the show and a feud between Chuck [Lorre] and Charlie. The tabloids took this whole thing and ran with it, and I just never saw it. Actors always have things that they’re not thrilled about on a show and have a hobby of bellyaching about those things. Charlie had his share of them, but nothing along the lines of an explosion. It was very strange to see Chuck’s actions be interpreted as a feud with Charlie when, if you’ll remember during that whole thing, when stuff was being said about him, he said nothing.

On His Acting Career: I’m feeling great about where I am right now. I’ve had a great run on a show that I really like, and we’re getting another shot at it. I’m also getting these crazy opportunities, like being in a production of Company with Stephen Colbert and the New York Philharmonic. I can’t imagine Jon Cryer performing with the New York Philharmonic isn’t one of the signs of apocalypse.

On The Character He Most Closely Associates With: Duckie. That was me in high school. And what has been nice is that character has really stuck around for people.

On What Duckie Would Be Doing Today: I think that anything that I could name would diminish it. It’s like when you go to the reunion and you see that guy you always thought was a quirky, fun, interesting person and he grew up not to be that. I don”t want to have that happen for people with Duckie.

[From Hollywood Reporter]

That bit about a fabricated feud is interesting, but I think that Cryer is subtly referring to the fact that Chuck Lorre was the one who spent a great deal of time holding his tongue because, certainly, Sheen’s mouth has always been a perpetual stream of verbal diarrhea as far as Lorre is concerned. Yet I understand that Cryer isn’t the type to talk trash about anyone (not even Charlie Sheen), and that’s just the kind of person he holds himself out to be.

Meanwhile, Cryer received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday with his wife, Lisa Joyner, in attendance as well as his “Two and a Half Men” co-stars. Ashton showed up looking like a dirty hippie, but at least he make an appearance to lend support. If Sheen were still on the show, he wouldn’t have even taken a moment away from sniffing the blow off a hooker’s backside to support anyone besides himself.

well i have to say that the show didn;t suck as much as i thought it was going to last night.

i hope it carries on without sheen, even though he really did define the show during his reign.

    go duckie!

  2. Samgirl says:

I do NOT care for Ashton Kutcher at all, but I actually laughed more in last nights episode of 2 1/2 Men than I did when Charlie was on the show. I think Jon Cryer is such a nice guy, and I really hope the show continues to be successful for him!

  3. gee says:

Love John Cryer. And the half man turned into a little cutie! Whoda thunk.

  4. baby says:

  5. Roma says:

    Where is Demi?

It’s not like her to miss a chance to get photographed. I am really starting to believe they are splitting.

Edited to add: I’m a loser but I checked and she hasn’t posted a pic with him in 2 months and she didn’t tweet once about his show premiering last night.

  6. socks says:

Wait.. wasn’t Jon Cryer’s wife trying to hire someone to kill him a few months back? What happened with that??

Love him, not a Ashton fan. Blah.

  7. orion70 says:

Awww, Duckie is a lot of people’s favorite character.

What’s up with old-man Kutcher up there? Are they remaking On Golden Pond?

  9. danielle says:

2 1/2 men wasn’t as bad as I feared last night – hope it stays funny!

  10. Samgirl says:

Omg@Socks. YOU’RE RIGHT!!!! His wife may be a crazycakes, but she’s totally hot.

  11. Kat says:

That’s his ex-wife that put the hit out, not his current wife.

Both my mom and my mother in law have mad crushes on him. It’s a little weird.

  12. Brooke says:

I love that he personally identifies with Duckie and I think his answer to ‘where would he be now’ is perfect. Yeah Jon Cryer!

  13. JQ says:

Yay Jon Cryer! He’s awesome. I love how well-spoken he is. And Duckie was one of the most fantastic 80s movie characters. EVER.

  14. Delta Juliet says:

Jon just seems like such a doll. I’ve never considered myself a huge ‘fan” or anything but how can you not like the guy.
Ashton looks exactly like I expect him to look. Dirty and stupid. He’s played out.

  15. F5 says:

That blew baby chunks.. never seen such a depressing sitcom.
Ashton has one dumb face in everything he does. Q___Q Show is soooooo ovah

  16. Angie says:

He will forever be Duckie to me!
    Long live the Duckman!

  17. ShanKat says:

Jon Cryer and Demi Moore did a movie together a million years ago called “No Small Affair.” It was awesomely terrible. It’s possible CBS preferred to keep the festivities “cast only.” Otherwise, it might have turned into the Demi and Ashton Show. Which does the show no favors.

Jon’s wife is a local L.A. news staple. She’s completely lovely. As is he.

  18. 4Real says:

Duckie for EVER! Love John Cryer….

    “I will always be…the Duckman.”

  19. Ashley says:

“inexplicably successful” << THIS. A thousand times this.

  20. He will always be my ‘Duckie’

  21. Dhavy says:

He was funnier than Ashton last night that’s for sure

  22. The Bobster says:

If it’s any consolation, the show died last night.

And despite what dumbass Kelso said on the show last night, he’s not tall, rich and smart. You pick the one he’s not.

  23. Catherine says:

    Loved Duckie!!!

  24. I wrote a recent blog called “Jon Cryer I will never leave you.” Jon’s incredible comic acting keeps me laughing through all of the less tasteful aspects of the show such as constant, contant sex. I was sick at heart when he lost his best comic actor status recently to Alec Baldwin. I love Alec too, but Jon is the genius. I watch all of his body language, his timing, his facial expression and speech. Jon, please keep it up as this old granny needs to laugh.

  25. webster phreaky says:

Have you ever noticed when you watch the old 2 and 1/2 Men (the new version is intolerable) the Jon Cryer has ORANGE LIPS? Noticably ORANGE LIPS …. no it’s not my TV(s), ALL 4 of them are chroma adjusted, because no one else on the show has anything BUT normal colored lips. We jokingly call Cryer when he is on screen as “ol Orange Lips been sucking oranges again!”
