AMC’s “Walking Dead” second season premiere on Sunday was the most watched basic cable series in the 18-49 demographic in history, with an incredible 11 million viewers of the premiere and encore that followed. (It even bested the major network shows.) This is good news for fans of the show and suggests that it will be renewed for a third season.
Wow: AMC’s The Walking Dead came back stronger than ever. Sunday’s season 2 premiere rolled up 7.3 million viewers. If you count the show’s repeat, that number climbs to 11 million.
The 90-minute Walking Dead return is up 38 percent compared to its Halloween-night debut last year, and is bigger than its finale too — so this is a series high. Last year, if you’ll recall, the numbers started big and actually managed to improve throughout the six-episode run (the finale delivered 6 million viewers). Walking Dead also delivered a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49, which is the real trick (a few cable dramaa like The Closer have really big audiences, but their average age is mostly above the demo — and this is bigger than most broadcast shows last week). This is more adults in the demo than any basic cable series in history.

Spoilers for opening episode
I found this season’s first episode entertaining for about the first hour but then it dragged. It didn’t need to be an hour and a half long. I wasn’t as impressed with the story telling and pace as I was in the first season. That may be because the show was newer and fresher when it started. There were too many plot holes this opening episode, though. Like I didn’t understand why Lori let her son, Carl, go with his dad and Shane instead of staying with the larger group. Maybe she assumed he would be safer with the men, but they were venturing further out and it just seemed like she didn’t put much thought into her son’s safety at all. Sure, no problem, just go with the men out into the woods even though you’re like eight and could end up as a snack for some undead creature.
The part where the zombie herd just passed by T-Dog and Daryl after T-Dog cut himself seemed ridiculous. Like can’t the zombies smell blood and would they all head in that direction? (They addressed this in the “Talking Dead” talk show afterwards, with creator Robert Kirkland explaining that zombies aren’t like bloodhounds.) Why did Andrea leave the RV door open and why didn’t more zombies head in there when she was screaming and stabbing that one zombie with a screwdriver?
No matter my complaints about it, I’ll watch this show every week, and millions of other people will too. It just feels like they lost something from the first season. The fact that they’ve had so many problems with production and have fired the series’ showrunner might explain it.

I’m also a fan of the comics. In the comics, it’s revealed that everyone turns into a zombie when they’re killed, even people who aren’t bitten. The fact that there are real corpses in this episode suggests that they’re not going to follow that zombie-creation rule. Also, I’m hoping they’ll introduce a kickass character called Michonne soon, and that’s about all I’ll say about that.
Maybe its just me but I just love Andrew Lincoln. My crush started with ‘Teachers’ and has continued through out the years.
Damn I want some Andrew Lincoln.
I just watched the show for the first time last Sunday and was semi-impressed.
American Horror Story, now, that is some weird sh*t.
squee
the hubby and I were camped out in front of the tv and I spent the first 30-45 mins with my knuckle white hand over my mouth so dead excited!!! – but then it raised too many questions for me as well as like, cmon already find the kid and get the hell outta there!! And stop with the love triangle bit!! for now anyways. And Andrea, wtf?!? I didn’t like Daryl in season 1 but this show I was impressed. Still Rick is my FAV! Mmmmm..mmmm..good!
Last season they smeared themselves with zombie parts to mask their smell and the instant it rained, all the zombies chased after them. Apparently, this season all you need to do is hide under the car.
I know this sounds awful but so little time has been spent on the back story of the little girl in order for viewers to get a glimpse of her personality or just something that would make us love her enough to spend so much time in this episode on finding her. And what was with letting the boy walk towards the deer by himself? I thought a zombie would attack him from the side while his dad and mom’s lover smiled at the deer.
I really hope the story line gets better.
That woman Andrea is a little cray cray. And when Lori said that they shouldn’t get supplies cause it was a graveyard(the stockpile of cars), I wanted to say, “This is survival biotch”
We’re behind for a week – the second season doesn’t start here until Oct. 22.
I just watched the 6 part webisode, my God the acting is atrocious. Made me miss The Walking Dead so much more!
I LOVED IT!!!!!!!
Oh, and I only found out now that Andrew Lincoln is the guy from Love Actually who likes Keira Knightley!!
This group really needs to get some survival skills.Daryl is the only one with any damn sense.Hell ya,for redneck country boys!! BTW-I LOVE,LOVE this show.
@Acorn – me too!! It’s been bugging me for two days; that “where have I seen him before?” feeling. Loved him in “Love Actually” – so cute! Andrew Lincoln for HGF!!!
@Harley, Andrew Lincoln HGF is genius!
Wow…..I pretty much agree with everyone here. The deer clip I was reasoning they were letting the boy marvel at nature in its peaceful state, but allowing him to see if he could get close enough to touch it made a bit of sense but not really. Even early on when the kids are told to stay within eyesight….mine woulda been at my damn hip 24/7 except for a leak or a dump. Children thinking they know what to do….stay your arse under that truck till I say it is clear…who told your butt to move. Then you run from the safety spot after I told you to wait a bit for me to divert zombies away. Damn kids, and I was almost like, oh….so they kill off the Black guy, no race card, it’s the truth we hardly last in any of the shows White America puts out and the one’s we put out buffoonery. Anyway, glad he survived, but would be good to put some focus on Black couple…not happy they killed off the woman who touted all this faith and J. Christ, but then is shown to have no faith. It is okay to have Blacks in a “workable/likable” focal point with character growth and still let the story surround your kind.
I love this show, it seems a bit slow to me, but i’m hoping its a buildup to something that will knock my socks off!
The first 15 minutes I nearly shit in my pants. It was so intense. As for the little boy walking up to the deer, ah yeah, I would never let him leave my side. Wonder who shot the kid? Merle maybe?
I don’t like scary things. Bad dreams. Chicken much.
I just discovered this series a couple of weeks ago on Netflix. I watched all of season 1 just prior to Season 2 starting (Oct. 16). Good thing it wasn’t very long. It’s gory but I love it!
I think it dragged a bit too. I know that Robert Kirkland did the comic not necessarily for the shock value or the gore but to show how society would deal with the situations that are put before them. I can’t stand the idea that Carl walked towards the deer alone but I know where this leads and it will be worth it.
I think they’ve done a tremendous job with putting this to the screen. It amazes me. I like the drama of it not just the blood and guts.
I am not a fan of Lori. I can’t stand her to be honest. In the comics I don’t like Rick but I like him here. I think Darrell is awesome! I liked him in the first season too. I love the redneck in him!
I’m thinking this show will continue on its merry way with a huge audience following it!
as a huge zombie lore fan, i have been watching this show since its inception and i just LOVE it so much! i agree that there are a few plotholes that tend to annoy [like, zombies suddenly having bad sense of smell…] and i am waiting for the women to finally man up bc i may be a teeny tiny gal but i will be a-stabbing and a-shooting some zombies if *i* were in the middle of an apocalypse… i also wouldnt worry about taking from a “graveyard” bc as someone else pointed out – this is SURVIVAL 101!
anyway, love lincoln and LOVE norman reedus! yum!
I seriously doubt if I can sit thru another one. Pretty corny. That deer scene did me in. I turned the channel.
Did they find the little girl?
They didn’t find Sophia yet.
Damn, you just described my feeling about this first episode! Hope it gets better!
those of you who aren’t in the UK should check out a series called ‘This Life’ about a group of young hot lawyers – Andrew Lincoln one of the main cast when he was much younger
UKHels** I think they should make a series called ‘This Walking Afterlife’ about a group of young hot zombies..
I love this show like I love chocolate, but there were a lot of WTF moments, like Andrea not bothering to lock the RV door when she saw like 50 zombies walking outside, or Rick choosing to leave the girl to kill those two zombies instead of just grabbing her and running. And does Lori have any expressions besides shocked/horrified? Her eyes are always like O.O
And those commericals breaks were waaay out of control.
Overall though I enjoyed the episode and I’ll be watching this show for as long as it’s on. Unless they kill off Daryl. Daryl is the man and I want to have his badass redneck babies.
I loved it and actually wished it was longer. I love that they are getting a lot more up close and personal with the zombie killing and dismembering, but I’m gross like that. I have a lot of small issues with continuity too (The smelling blood thing and them being able to just hide from them. Also, aren’t they attracted to noise? Shouldn’t there have been a horde of zombies at the church??), but I’ll put them aside for now. Although it did occur to me that maybe Andrea was loading the gun to shoot herself, since she’s looking for a way out. That wasn’t really clear. What is clear is how much she’s irritating me.
Everyone I have discussed the episode with pretty much feels the same about all the girls. Lori is an annoying, sanctimonious bore (Seriously? Don’t take anything you can to survive from people that are long dead?!), Andrea is crazy and suicidal and Jackie is pathetic. I really wish they would inject some badass girls into the mix. What is Michelle Rodriguez doing nowadays??
I can’t believe they put BOTH kids in harm’s way in the first episode. They are NOT playing around! I understand Sophia’s being scared and running, but I do think it’s odd that they can’t find her. How far could she have gone?!
And I’m in love with Darryl too. I would totally have his post-apocalyptic hillbilly babies. He’ll probably be the only one to survive anyway, with how dumb everyone else is being!
Another vote for HGF with Andrew Lincoln!
I want to love this show. Last season’s opener was EPIC, but the rest of the season just got worse and worse. By the finale, I was totally over it. But as a lifelong horror and zombie fan, I’ll continue to watch.
I love this show and really enjoyed the premiere. I was pissed about the little girl and the long-ass search for her. There hasn’t been enough background about her to make me care if they find her. MOVE ON! I’m horrible, I know.
I know it’s the zombie apocalypse and women are scarce but seriously, Shane needs to get over Lori. She’s a bore. I bet Andrea and Shane would be a steamy hook-up. It’ll make them a little more interesting and help them stop being pissed at boring Lori.
Speaking about Andrea, I like how she gave it to Dale about wanting to die and how that’s a personal decision. I sympathized with her because being in their shoes appears hopeless. I’d like to think I’d hang as long as I could but I could see how going out in a quick fireball is a reasonable alternative.
Anyway, can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings!
I hate that it’s going the way of all AMC shows, which is a slow tedious pace that takes the whole season before you get any resolution. BB does it, MM does it and now TWD (oddly enough those shows also have the annoying wife who I hate and wish would get fired from the show in common). The first episode sucked and I can’t believe they wasted almost an hour and a half to look for some stupid little girl who couldn’t follow SIMPLE directions.
I’m trying not to compare it to last season but I was one of those that watched it on it’s Halloween night premiere (I was watching Dawn of the Dead and didn’t bother to change the channel) and I was hooked from that first episode. I really hope it didn’t lose any of it’s magic because FD left.
Love the show and can’t wait to watch more. There are issues with it but the overall feel, like with True Blood, makes me love it despite the flaws it may have. Happy that it has broken reacords.
Btw, anyone gonna be watching the new AMC show … something about the railroad? I saw clips during Walking Dead and it looked interesting.
I thought the same as all of you about the zombies no longer being able to detect them just because they hid under the cars. Weren’t there dead bodies left behind in some of the cars as well (such as when Carl grabbed the set of knives from a car and went to show Shane)? Maybe there was just a general stench of death/decay in the air which worked with the body odor that’s sure to be stuck to each of the survivors to provide enough of a cover?
LOVE the show but WTF with hiding under the cars? That entire scene I was yelling at the tv: ZOMBIES CAN SMELL!!
Plus, the only reason they’ve had to waste TWO DAYS searching for this kid is because Lori held Carol down under the car instead of letting her run to the kid’s rescue. This show def needs some badass chicas in the mix.
Celebitchy, I like you even more now that I know you read the comic, and (SPOILER?!) I can’t WAIT for M. either!!
I really love this show. I am strangely attracted to Darryl too! Last season he was cool in an assy way but this season sheee-oot! He seems more sympathetic plus he moves like a panther or something and my womb in ready.
I have to get with season two asap… god season 1 was so great. It was much better than the graphic novel (which was great; but the show is more exciting and has more interesting writing) They said that they wouldn’t hire a team of writers this season though. Hope it doesn’t bomb
