Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in a ‘Valley of the Dolls’ shoot: lovely or ridiculous?

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley covers the December issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK, Kaiser already covered the simultaneous feature in the Harper’s feature on this side of the pond that saw an entirely different photoshoot and confessions of a former Ugly Betty from Rosie’s mouth. Indeed, she’s a bit of a strange duck that has recently declared that all women should save up for $700 Louboutins and is oh-so-carefully weighing all of those offers on the table in order to launch herself as a serious actress.

Anyway . . .

For the UK edition of the magazine, Rosie was photographed by Tom Munro for two editorial shoots, one simply called “Rosie” (featuring her bod in swimwear) and the other not-so-subtly titled “Valley Of The Dolls” (featuring Rosie looking highly uncomfortable as a 1960s housewife). I don’t deny that her body looks fantastic in the first set of photographs:

Essentially though, this issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK might as well be titled “The Rosie Issue” instead of “The Body Issue” because they destroyed the impact of Rosie’s bod by letting her speak:

On Her Early Modelling Days: “All I kept hearing was ‘Honey, you gotta change this; your hair’s this; your legs are that; you’re not enough this; you’re not enough that; you’re too much this; why are you wearing that?’ And so it was a constant stream of judgement.”

On Being a Weirdo: “I was always the girl who would turn up to fashion shows in trainers, flares, a shearling jacket and braids in my hair. I look back and I was really cute, but all the other girls were slick, groomed and elegant, while I’d be backstage drinking a can of beer. It’s a great British thing, but that kind of thing doesn’t go down well in America.”

Mario Testino on her appeal: “Rosie can make any outfit look sexy. She’s English and has a very English beauty, but she has a ‘Brazilian body,’ and that’s what makes her so special.”

On Living in the U.S.: “I have a different feeling when I come back to England; as soon as I touch down in Heathrow and drive into London and down to Devon, there’s a sense of home and belonging. I will never feel that in America, it doesn’t matter how long I live there – and I’ve come to terms with that. I really am so proud to be British.”

[From Daily Mail]

Yes, we all know that modelling is a tough field to succeed in, but for the few who do, the payoffs are immeasurable considering that standing around and looking pretty is the job description. Criticism from all ends is merely part of the deal, so I’m not sure why Rosie feels like she’s spewing some groundbreaking information by talking about the horrible “judgment” factor. If one enters a superficial career field, then one should be prepared to deal with that sort of thing on a constant basis. Nothing new there.

Oh, and here’s the second editorial — the “Valley Of The Dolls” spread. Honestly, it’s hard to take this one seriously at all. Mostly, Rosie looks like she watched a “Mad Men” marathon and, as a result, is poorly imitating January Jones’ Betty Draper. And when Jones looks good in comparison, well, Rosie’s acting skills have just hit the wall.

A nice 70’s period shoot but she could use a little more lip filler.

  2. Julie says:

    Simply gorgeous!

  3. Neelyo says:

These photos remind me of the Amber Valletta photo shoot from a year ago (?) that was inspired by THE BIRDS. It was much better mainly because Valletta looked like a woman and Rosie looks like a girl playing dress up.

By the way, I love Amber on REVENGE.

    • Esmom says:

Love Amber, love Revenge even more!

    • Trillion says:

I saved that copy because Amber’s shot (with her son!) is so amazing to look at. Rosie is very hard looking. I don’t find her sexy, but I do appreciate the weirdness of her face.

    • Carolyn says:

Amber is a real supermodel. Rosie isn’t. Remember the Amber/Shalom covers? Rosie is bland to me..no expression in the eyes. Tx for the tip on Revenge… it’s just about to start here in Oz.

  4. Annaloo says:

I admit, fashion modelling isn’t saving lives, and nor is it as difficult as many jobs out there.. but it’s always case by case.

Some shoots can be tough, some people are very difficult to work with, and you do need to have a strong sense of self worth and confidence for the catty comments and actions that inevitably come. Working with bitches (male and female)isn’t easy for a lot of people, esp when you’re expected to keep your mouth shut. The fashion industry is full of mean cats, and the good pay is streamed towards to a small segment.. I would not want to go into it!

  5. hstl1 says:

I just want to know who colors her hair. I love it.

    • Ah! says:

This is random but she was getting her hair done at the Marie Robinson salon next to me in NYC a few months ago. Not sure if they do her color, but they might!

  6. heather says:

Anyone else getting a bit sick of this girl?

    • Cherry Rose says:

I know I am. And I really do not find her that pretty, and think she needs to go easy on the lip fillers. That upper lip is getting to have a life on its own.

  7. Esmom says:

Nice bod, yes, but for some reason she’s bugged me since the minute I became aware of her presence. Not impressive.

  8. Linnie says:

Me, me, me. Wah, wah, wah. If you shone a flashlight in her ear, the light would show up on the wall on the other side of her head.

  9. ShanKat says:

Her features are too distracting for me to enjoy her in a fashion context. Just too much happening, with the lips and the incredibly derp thousand-yard stare.

Pucci is amazing lately! That coral cut-out shift is devoon.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I’m probably going to sound like a loser, but I’ve been seeing this word ‘derp’ popping up everywhere, and I have no idea as how I would even find out what it means.

Please educate me, what does ‘derp’ mean?

    • jess says:

bahahahaha “incredibly derp”. i’ve always felt that it didnt look like there was much going on behind her eyes

  10. WhiteNoise says:

Beautiful shoots, she looks amazing. And yet again, I do not get the criticism directed at her for daring to open her mouth and have opinions or ambitions.

I guess she’s just supposed to shut up and be pretty? 🙄

    • HadleyB says:

Well, yes she’s a model. I don’t need or want to know her dreams, aspirations, political views, childhood traumas or how to save up for a handbag.

She is there to sell clothes, bags, perfume, magazines, or whoever hired to sell whatever they are are selling.

More models/actors need to just do their job and shut up, I don’t go to work and preach my views.

Just because you on a red carpet doesn’t mean it’s a your own personal pulpit.

  11. Happy21 says:

I think she always looks the same not matter what she is modeling and I agree with the post above about her features being to distracting. Her lips are the only thing I notice besides her dead girl eyes.

She does have a great bod and is beautiful but there is just something about her that doesn’t do it for me.

    • Jackson says:

I totally agree! And I love the house where the photo shoot was done. Now *that* I would like to see more of.

  12. Cathy says:

I like the hot pink, lacey embroidered looking dress she is wearing in the one picture. Otherwise I don’t think she’ll ever be taken as a serious actress, she’s just another pretty blonde.

  13. Hanna says:

She’s got a very pretty and healthy body but i’ve got iussues with her lips. They look like they’re about to expolde in any minute. I think that she should go easy on the ‘modelling is hard’ thing. It’s not. All you’ve got to do basically is to be a hanger for the clothes.
Briefly, I’m sick of this girl and her face. AND her imaginary acting goals.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Yeah, I had no strong feelings about her before, but she is getting overexposed now and her attempts to seem relatable sound increasingly whiny. Why is she so damned set on me feeling sorry for her adolescence? Why does she keep talking about her braids as if they were battle scars?

  14. Jover says:

At least they put models on the covers of fashion mags in england – I am sick to death of seeing SJP, blake lively, etc. on american covers – that said, can’t hate on rosie, yah, she’s not a neurosurgeon, but how many actresses are, facial expressions are repititive though; now Coca Rocha is a true poser (in a good way),yes neelyo, rosie has nothing on Amber Valetta.

  15. stephanie says:

she’s gorgeous. I would happily trade years of my lifespan for a bod like that 🙂

  16. GirlyGirl says:

She sure has a dynamic emotional range.

  17. Turtle Dove says:

In some shots she looks good, but in others odd…. her body proportions are off, especially, when compared to other models.

The lip is a bone of contention too. She gets filler (or had a lip implant) in the top lip. Her bottom was always full. I guess it was done to balance her face/look, but why does everyone think that they should/can look like Angie?

  18. Kristen says:

She’s a gorgeous girl, but she doesn’t have the right kind of face to pull off the super 60s/70s stuff. And in the photo with the pink dress, she even looks a bit like Juliet Lewis. Sort of odd.

  19. HadleyB says:

She has a great body, pretty face but .. something is off about her. With a good model ( like Amber – great example!) you have depth, you can feel the pictures come to life.. she is just dead inside. Her eyes are soulless. She is more mannequin than real, boring.

Which is too bad but just because you are pretty with a perfect body doesn’t mean you can be a great model.

I won’t mention her acting because, well, it’s not worth mentioning.

  20. hillbilly in the corner says:

Going to upset some people but this girl looks like a long neck giriffe with duck lips and weasel eyes…watched her on Transformers and a more awkward unattractive untalented person since Lindsay Lohan last movie …She is dead behind those eyes..blank.. Now I love tall woman wanted to be at least 6 ft myself , fell a full inches short though but she is somehow not quite in propostion to make a pleasing picture …narrow is the word that comes to mind….and those huge flatten duck lips why woman think having their mouth lips look like their other lips are attractive I have no idea….Do not think this woman is attractive at all

  21. Bodhi says:

The Mad Men-esque are kind of off, for me. She looks to modern to pull off that kind of look.

  22. Nev says:

so over the entire Mad Men thing…

  23. faye says:

    needs to gain 10 – 20 lbs.

  24. miriam says:

Love the outfits but not her. I want that dotty jacket.

  25. JaneWonderfalls says:

I have to admit she looks fabulous in every photo. I even like most of the outfits including the swimwear. Bravo! I guess this photos prove all of the hype surrounding this women.

  26. Lotr Dork says:

She doesn’t pull the whole “Mad Men” look off very well IMO. I think it’s the hairstyle that’s bugging me……

  27. Jules says:

She is pretty, clothes lovely, but MY GOD I want that house.

  28. X says:

Alright ladies and gents, I have been debating this a while. I am not anti-plastic surgery; in fact some of the few times I have posted is to bitch about the criticism older women get for the plastic surgery they undergo.

I am not saying this plastic surgery, if it exists, is a bad thing. However, I am curious if the rest of you have googled pictures of Rosie as a kid to now, and noticed that her lips are considerably bigger from early modelling days.

  29. Lady_Luck says:

Don’t like her. At all. I’ve read some of her interviews and she comes across as one of the most conceited, shallow and vacuous human beings on earth.

I think personality actually does go a long way in the appeal of a person. I quite like Miranda Kerr in the way of up and coming supermodels – those dimples and sweet smile are endearing. Although perhaps a bit too skinny.

  30. Victoria says:

Rosie always looked ethnic to me and not in an English way. I don’t know why. Like she and Leona Lewis have that lion look to them but with rosie it’s so strong. She was a lot more softer looking when she was younger but the cokewhoring and drinking make her look hard. She is quite the party girl.

I honestly don’t find her attractive.

  31. normades says:

I’ll take everything she’s wearing, thank you.

  32. DreamyK says:

The only thing Brazilian about her is her wax job. It’s an insult to Brazilian women to be compared to her because they are some lush, curvy gorgeous women. Rosie is beautiful in her own coltish way, but she is no Brazilian.

  33. Coucou says:

A year or two ago, i was a fan, but she’s morphed into something completely different, she’s like her own version of a Transformer Model, and a scary one at that…something weird going on with the eyebrow slant and trout pout, ick. She didn’t need that! She makes Megan Fox look like a wholesome beauty in comparison, even if their personalities are similar. Can you imagine her at 40? She’s gonna be such a hardened bitch. I almost get chills looking at those death ray eyes.

  34. taxi says:

I like the photos. Beautiful body & interesting face. The stare may well be part of the shoot request. Her face is not “English” to me & her body certainly isn’t typically Brazilian. (Neither Is Bundschen’s).

I haven’t seen her on film but I don’t understand why everyone criticizes her so much. She’s young, maybe hasn’t been coached on interview techniques. At least she isn’t snorting coke in bars or barfing in the street.

  35. MK821 says:

She frightens me. She’s like a mannequin that’s come to life.
