Katherine Heigl covers the January issue of Elle Magazine, and I had to laugh at the cover line that Elle chose: “They wanted me to be America’s Sweetheart… and then I opened my mouth.” Yep. That about sums it up. She went from being the Next Big Rom-Com Actress to being “that ungrateful diva who bitches and moans about everyone and everything.” Do Hollywood types even want to work with her anymore? Well, she’s in New Year’s Eve, obviously, and she’s got the Stephanie Plum movie coming out. I think Hollywood is waiting to see if Heigl can deliver again in a starring role in One For the Money. Anyhoodle, here are some highlights from the print interview:
On chemical happiness: “I take a stress relief formula from Whole Foods. I call them my happy pills. Yeah, it helps me. In fact, I should’ve taken one today. I’ve done it to myself. I’ve created a chaotic life, and then I get on edge because of it… maybe I should take Xanax. My mother is so against pharaceuticals. Because of her wariness, it’s left wariness in me. Because, seriously, I have friends who’ll be like, ‘Oh, you have a Vicodin? Can I pop one?’ And I’m like, ‘What? You can’t just pop stuff like that! You need to talk to your doctor. What are you thinking?’”
Seth Rogen on Heigl: “I gotta say, it’s not like we’re the only people she said some bat-sh-t crazy things about. That’s kind of her bag now.”
The aftermath of Heigl’s bitching and moaning: Her longtime publicist told her to start thinking about interviews as other acting roles. A speechwriter was brought in to craft answers to questions she might be asked. She did chipper interviews, the aftermath of which was, she says, “months and months of self-hatred… I was trying to stop the snowball from gaining speed.”
Wanting to be liked again: “I think it’s a female thing. I’m just that a–hole who really wants everyone to like me and it’s a ridiculous goal and it’s an impossible goal. But I think if keep pushing forward and showing myself through and through, they will see me again for what I really am and not what has been sort of spun about me.”
Heigl’s publicist fired her: “I’ve never really been America’s sweetheart, but for a minute I think that’s what they wanted me to be. And I had ‘em for a second thinking maybe I was. And then I opened my mouth and it was clear I wasn’t. There’s so much of my mother’s caustic, sarcastic, irreverent take on things. But I also love and embrace it.” She’s still not sorry for anything she said – it’s her truth – but she is sorry she made the mistake of saying it aloud. “I look at some of what I had to say, and I’m like, Oh my God, I would tell myself to shut up too.”
On her electronic cigarettes: “I love it. I know I’m supposed to say I hate it, but I love it.”

There’s more in there from Heigl’s BFF, her momager, and how Heigl is the woman today because of Nancy’s influence, for better or for worse. I have to admit, this interview cracked me up. I tend to think Heigl is really and truly a massive bitch, and I say that in both the best and worst ways. She speaks her mind, she’s a diva, she’s nasty to coworkers, she’s unprofessional, she knows her own mind and she has her own opinions. She’s a mixed bag of extremes, and it’s amusing to see Heigl struggle with self-awareness about just what kind of woman she is. I think this quote sums it up beautifully: “I’m just that a–hole who really wants everyone to like me.” Perfect.

“I’m just that a–hole who really wants everyone to like me”
I agree with the first part.
Kaiser, you misspelled her name. You know she hates mistakes with her name’s pronunciation. That may be the same way she feels about its spelling.
Ok, it was fixed before my comment was approved.
Here’s a free tip for you, Heigl: if you want people to like you, it’s generally a poor strategy to be an asshole. Might want to work on that.
Words to live by.
Exactly.
But wanting to be liked makes a person an a**hole? Odd logic.
Bingo!!!
That last picture makes me rethink my 75 year grandmother soul remark and now all I am thinking about is that she is a freaking wildcat in bed probably (i.e. she looks hot as hell)
These are the best pics I have ever seen of her. She should wear her hair like that always.
Agreed!! Love her hair styled up like that!
The style rocks, but the color sucks. It’s yellow!
Also, thanks to photo #3, we can rest assured that those boobs have been enhanced.
Honestly, that could be the result of a push up bra, chicken cutlets, or duct tape. Hard cleavage doesn’t always mean implants.
She looks great and I like her.
Agree! Hair looks great!
I am not usually one for extensions but in her case : please get some and use them.
The hairdo is aging her, and while she may be a diva bitch she still has a pretty face with great lips but this hair..is just so awful. Awful.
And get a new stylist. Be on Brad’s new show, something! She dresses terrible, she can’t even do a casual jeans and Tshirt day right.
All together now….Poor Josh!
(she does look good, tho).
last pic is nice…
love love love her attitude.
sometimes you got to be an asshole.
Agreed. I have kinda of meh towards her, but she seems to be brutally honest and, like it or not, that has to be admired in this day and age of selling ones soul for the mighty dollar.
The secret is knowing when to be an asshole and when to suck up and play nice. If you mix the two up it could have disastrous consequences for her career.
Why didn’t she rock this hairdo for the New Year’s Eve premiere instead of Betty White’s wig.
Yep, shoulda worn her hair like that to the NYE premier — MUCH better. She could have ditched the gold necklace, done the straight hair, and she would have looked INCREDIBLE. Maybe she should just hire whomever styled this shoot to follow her around and make sure she looks hot on a regular basis.
Agree… Maybe she was bored with the straight style and wanted something more special, though.
here’s the thing…yes, she’s run her mouth about a lot of different things, but what she said about Knocked Up was true. The guys in the movie *were* portrayed as lovable goofballs and the women in the movie were naggy b*tches who wouldn’t let the guys have any fun. So no, what she said about Knocked Up wasn’t batsh*t crazy, it was factual. It was certainly how I perceived the gender dynamics in the movie, and I think Seth’s reaction was so defensive because he knew it to be true.
Cosign.
Absolutely.
right on
I agree.
The issue of her comments regarding Knocked Up have never been about the validity of her critique. The issue has always been that she took the part knowing how it was written, became an A-list actor in the process, and then proceeded to dump over the movie and consequently its writer, Judd Apatow.
see, here’s my problem with this: how are her comments dumping on Judd Apatow and the movie? She didn’t make disparaging remarks about anyone involved with the film, she didn’t make sweepingly negative remarks, like say, “bat-sh*t crazy.” She had a very real, and, as even she admitted, minor criticism. This is the problem with Hollywood and many other parts of society. You can’t say anything even remotely critical about anything without you being cast as “dumping” on people, being a “hater,” being a “b*tch,” or being ungrateful. She said, along with the comments about the film being “a little sexist,” that it was the greatest filming experience she’s had and that she loved 98% of it. Also, if her critique is valid, then why is it not okay to say it out loud? Because the people she’s criticizing gave her money?
I so totally agree with you. I think uit is unfair at how she was treated especially by Apatow and Seth Rogan.
Here is the thing male actors criticize their movies all the time, look at Robert Downey Jr, he recently siad that all of his early movies basically sucked, and this is a guy who was high and a liability on each and every set up til The Iron Man.
The difference is that he is saying this about movies from his past, NOT ones IN the theaters. That’s just not smart.
I agree. Women are expected to be opinion-less. Just shut up and smile…
I agree. Women are trained from any early age to not make other people uncomfortable which means keep your opinions to yourself – which is why women tend toward being passive aggressively pissy behind the backs of other women. I hate it – even if I’m guilty of it.
I honestly never thought KH’s opinions were all that terrible and were blown way out of proportion. Seth Rogen and Judd Aptow are allowed to say and do the most outlandish sh** but lord forfend if a woman should have an opinion that doesn’t sprinkle fairy dust over their egos. Please.
It’s called accountability. Look it up.
You reap what you sow and all that jazz.
Really it’s not that hard; act like an asshole be treated like one. You can be strong minded, have opinions, etc., and NOT be an ass. She just wants to make it all about others spinning what she put out there into something other than what it is. It.is.what.it.is.
Live with it.
Whew. Guess I’m not gunning for the sweetheart title, either?;-)
eta: I will give her the fact that many, many of the movies portray the women as harpies and the guys all put upon cuz the wimmin want to rein them in; but that doesn’t excuse all the rest she has spouted. So one point for, a whole hella lot more against.
I agree with everything you said. Guess I’m not a sweetheart either 🙂 .
I don’t dislike her, but I agree with you.
Yeah, she was right about Knocked Up, but wasn’t all of that said during her promo for The Ugly Truth? The only differences between HER characters were a fake baby bump and top billing. She was STILL a harpy shrew AND worked on tv, but in TUT, she was showcased.
And the one comment didn’t effect her career, the CONSTANT whining to interviewers about movies AND Grey’s Anatomy took her down a notch. For Grey’s, aside from the Knight/Washington incident, it was the writers this, the producers that, you know, the ones who help her win an Emmy.
Her “honesty” doesn’t equal her power in HW, female or not. She’s realizing she still has a game to play. She never had enough leverage to change the game (or she would have QUIT rather than been put on “hiatus” on Grey’s, then fired, and probably lost a few movies roles, too), so she’s changing the way she plays it (I’m flawed, please like me again).
I really, truly admire that she didn’t become “America’s sweetheart”, because that’s not who she is. She’s a cantankerous, foul-mouthed diva. She’s not afraid to tell her handlers what she thinks, which in today’s Hollywood circus is uber refreshing. Even if she does come off as a bitch, at least she’s not a trained monkey.
If only she could back up the bitchiness with some talent…
I think she looks amazing in these photos. I love her short hair in this style… I prefer it this way rather than how it was styled for the premiere of New Year’s Eve.
The.Hair.Is.So.Much.Better.
Heigl is really one of the nicest celebs it is a shame she get portrayed as something else. She does speak her mind and honest and it gets her in to trouble. She is not a bitch though – she has a huge heart and is very kind. Also she isnt unprofessional – even Rogen who you quoted said she was great to work with. He just had issues with her one comment after that was negative that got blown up. He has since said he has changed his mind on it and can understand that sometimes you say things that get taken out of context and are not the right things to say.
I just think Heigl is an 80 year-old cantankerous crank in the body of a thirty-something year old woman. That explains the fashion, the verbal diarrhea, the mood swings, EVERYTHING.
what did she say that was so horrible again? i kinda like her *hides*
I have lived Katherine since Roswell
Oh!!! That is so true for me also…Roswell. I was trying to figure it out why do I really like her so much despite all this rumors about how bitchy she is…now it comes back to me…I used to watch and love Roswell and she was really great in there. I might be obviously biased, but she seems to be a nice person that got an unlucky label. I think that what she have said till now isn’t that much of a big deal and a lot other people said that (and worse) and weren’t crucified as she is because of it. I think that specially male actors do this kind of bitching all the time and no one jumps on them because of it…
Hey Katherine heads up….
You are an Asshole and Nobody likes you!
Too funny.
I like her…
I really want that necklace.
There’s something very un-sexy about her…
Let me guess-she was one of those kids in school whose teachers complained about her attitude. Her mom said that it was just her being outspoken and that she had great “sprit” and was refreshingly honest. Blech. As opposed to teaching her know the difference between honesty and rudeness/respect. Hence, a rude and entitled diva is born.
I like her. Diva or not. I don’t really care. She’s entertaining at least. And she looks smokin’ in those photos!
Her relationship with her mom makes me kind of nervous. Quotes her constantly, mom’s in every picture you see of Heigl and her husband/daughter, totally involved in her business life. Really seems like a lot of mom.
Looks great on that cover, though.
OMG I was thinking the same thing!! She mentions her mom, what, twice or three times just in this little excerpt??
Their relationship CANNOT be healthy. I got a lot of “caustic bitchery” from my mom too and I’ve had to learn how to rein it in because, guess what? PEOPLE END UP NOT LIKING YOU WHEN YOU ACT LIKE THAT 24/7. Just the facts.
She’s superb in romantic comedies. She has the it factor on screen with her expressive big brown eyes and far more range in them actingwise than Jennifer Aniston.
Agree. Aniston is a one note actress who is the same in every movie. Aniston never takes risks ie: tries an accent, a period drama etc.
That and she can’t even speak her lines anymore. She has that slur and a monotonous voice and is devoid of any convincing facial expressions and it’s a drag to watch her. My 90 year old granma could probably act better.
I agree! Her voice is like nails down a chalk board for me *shudder*.
I agreed with you Jayna…I also think she is a fabulous drama actress although she said she is not ready yet but her dramatic moments in Greys A were so believable.
I really like her personality and her outspokenness.
If her hair CAN look like this… why does she choose to look like, well, we all know, her mother?!>!!>??!!!
She is a beautiful woman and her hair looks fabulous in those photos. That being said, I’m not sure why people loath her so much. Isn’t it refreshing that she’s not “America’s Sweetheart?” Do we really want another cookie cutter actress like Julia Roberts in this day in age?
She is really very beautiful…
AND, I like that she speaks her mind. People think I’m a bitch, too…
I think most actors go into the acting profession because they want to be liked. They are all usually a mess of insecurities to one degree or another.
Why don’t we every get an update about KH’s daughter? Not saying she has to be brought up in every interview, but I feel like we don’t ever get any news about her. Ever.
All the more reason to like her, in my opinion.
Agreed! I like that she’s protective of her daughter and doesn’t feel the need to “famewhore” her around town. She’s interesting. I like that she speaks her mind. Even if I don’t always agree with what they say, I appreciate celebrities that actually give real responses to questions rather than the usual boring PR approved answers.
I never thought what she said was all that bad. I think that there is a HUGE double standard in society where men can speak their minds, but women are expected to be opinion-less. They are supposed to shut up and smile. When they are vacant, then society (women included) can project their fantasies onto them.
So is this the “im admitting my problem/issue reverse psyche’- in order to get folks to say, “see at least she’s self depreciating and self-aware” coooollllllll”?
girl please, though women are expected to just only smile sadly, still she is/was nuts and for some reason I guess I’m alone in how she played out that Isiah/TR incident, you know, SOMEONE else’s business
That moment actually made me like her. She stuck up for her friend when he was being attacked.
What a big bag of crazy!!!
I guess when people invest millions of dollars into a film, some of which are paid to you they frown on you degrading their investment.
It’s your job to work and promote. If you’ve got candid remarks- express them when you turn down a role, NOT when producers are trying to make back some of the money they paid you.
And, face it honey, you’re hardly a bad ass, you’re a whiner.
Just because you’re an a–hole doesn’t mean you have to be d-ck.
LEARN THE DIFFERENCE, dumba–, LEARN.
LOL! Your comment reminded me of that monologue in Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s movie “Team America: World Police”. It’s the first quote here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372588/quotes
I’m sorry, but what is it with all these posters (er, whiners) complaining about her getting dumped on cuz she’s a woman?
No. Male or female, if you’re an A—HOLE to work with, if your nasty to your co-workers, if you treat the extras and the crew like SH-T (and this I know from personal experience) then you are exactly what she said she is:
AN A–HOLE!
She was never accused of treating the crew and extras like crap. She was accused of talking too much in interviews.
It seems your experiences might have left you a little bitter…
Yeah actually that’s EXACTLY what she’s been accused of.
Kurfuffles, her offending behavior was when she complained about Isiah Washington picking on her co-worker, she complained about Judd Appatow’s writing, and the writing on Grey’s Anatomy. I don’t consider writers to be crew.
In addition, there IS a huge bias against women in the industry. Check out this week’s Hollywood Reporter were they break down the numbers: only 12% of episodic tv is directed by women, male screen writers and directors use an average of only 29% female characters, and female writers for film and television get paid 20% less than their male counter parts.
I almost liked her in this interview. She’s making strides but I don’t think she needs to be all sweet. I’m so fucking sick to death of sweet actresses. Yeah, you’re a woman you hae to smile and be nice. I like she’s a bitch. It’s kinda nice.
I wholeheartedly agree.
The girls got chutzpah. I like her eccentricities. That she has to fight her own nature, kinda makes me like her more. At least she’s trying. Unlike many actors.
I like her…she has strong opinions and if she voices them she is a bitch and if she is closed mouth she is a “wannabe.” I think she will be a great Stephanie Plum…I think she is a good actress and is funny.
I like her a lot and agree that she is fantastic in romantic comedies. I like that she isn’t a trained monkey, as someone else put it.
If she wants people to like her, then maybe she shouldn’t be such a giant asshole to work with. And people in the industry think she’s an asshole because she acts like an asshole.
It’s ridiculous that she hides behind some feminist schtick to try to excuse her behavior.
Yet actors like Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, etc. who are known as a-holes as well don’t have the same reaction from society and the industry that she has.
There might be plenty of reasons to dislike her, but you can’t ignore the fact that men with her issues are treated far differently than women with her issues.
I like her; she has a good screen presence and is talented. So what if she shoots off her mouth. Male actors act bitchy all the time and it’s just laughed off or ascribed to them being great “artists”. Cut a girl some slack, will ya?
I kinda like that she bitches at hollywood people. I would.
I also like that she didn’t get pulled into the “America Sweetheart” role, because I never for one minute think any actor/actress is America’s Sweetheart.
I don’t think America’s Sweetheart is an actress or sports figure, but they’re out there somewhere . . .
Honestly? I love her a lot and have since the Roswell days. I think her attitude isn’t entirely bitchy, but is refreshing at any rate. I like that she doesn’t play interviews by the book. It’s also why I love K-Stew; she’s awkward and uncomfortable but honest. We have enough perky, charismatic, chirpy stars who tell you everything you want to hear.
Her attitude in interviews is not necessarily the problem. It’s her attitude with coworkers, agents, producers & the like that is the issue. She’s a monster. And such monsters can only get away with that as long as they make money for the people that have to put up with them. Shes flailing in that department now so she’s trying to do a mea culpa. Sad for her there are actresses with equivalent skills, better hair, and far superior attitude that can and will replace her.
