Oddly enough, I resisted jumping into the “Mad Men” cult for years. Yet over the past several months, I’ve quickly caught up on all four seasons (thanks to the magic of Netflix Instant Watch) of the show and am pining for the next season to commence, post haste. Unfortunately, there’s still a bit of a wait left since the Season Five doesn’t begin anew until March 25. However, Jon Hamm is already on the publicity trail; as such, he has already spoken with TV Fanatic about Don Draper’s new engagement. If you’ll recall from the Season Four finale, Don became engaged to his (latest) secretary, Megan, during the season finale. Obviously, Don didn’t really mean to get engaged. He just sort of fell into it; that is, he had the ring in hand already (thanks to a convenient bequest from his confidant, Anna Draper) and thought — what the hell — this chick gets along with my kids. Let’s get engaged. And she said “yes.”
Like most “Mad Men” fans, I have issues with the hasty engagement, but I sort of want Don and Megan to get married … if only for the crazy-teeth babies that will inevitably be produced. Still, I can admit that Don’s prospective second marriage is a very bad idea becase — let’s face it — he makes for a very bad husband. Hamm seems to intuitively sense that his character is an adultering, drunken mess who has no business with marriage, yet he is at the mercy of the show’s writers. So Hamm has opined on several topics, including Elizabeth Moss’ Peggy Olsen character, who will apparently feature significantly in the Season Five premiere entitled “A Little Kiss.” If Don and Peggy kiss, I will officially lose it. She’s too good for him, right?
On Don Draper’s Vices: “I think he has a dangerous relationship with alcohol that a lot of creative people have. And fill in the blank with either alcohol or whatever. It’s a depressant, yet it uninhibits you creatively. It’s a fine line and Don has crossed it many times… [but] Don recognized that and seems to have backed away from the edge a bit.”
On Draper’s Thing With Chicks: Draper, of course, also loves women. In the season four finale, we were left with the indelible image of Don in bed with his brand new twenty-something fiancé, Megan. She’s sleeping on his chest and he turns and stares out the window thoughtfully. When prodded about just what Draper may have been pondering at that moment, Hamm slyly avoided the question. “Yes, he was in fact thinking of something,” the actor admitted.
On Why Don Succeeds At Work But Fails In His Personal Life: “Don makes his money and his livelihood on being creatively ahead of the curve, and finding out what makes people tick. And what happens when you get older? And there’s another generation of people coming up right behind you who are out-moving you and out-thinking you? What happens to a creative person? Don is getting older. It’s not The Simpsons where everyone stays the same age 20 years in. People age and we try and depict that realistically.”
On Peggy and Don: “I think in the world of the show we see the office through Peggy’s eyes. She’s the new girl and we see her from her very first day… And we’ve watched through over 50 episodes of television her grow and become more confident and we’ve watched Don alternately shout at her and correct her and not be very nice to her but also be profoundly nice to her. I think Peggy is very important to Don. And I think you saw at the end of season three, when the firm blows up and they have to start all over again, he says ‘If you leave, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to hire you back.’ And I think that sums up the relationship that Don and Peggy have.”
On Peggy’s Opinion Affecting Don’s Nuptuals: “We’ll see. Certainly something [is] explored in season five. We don’t really know. And I’ll be as honest as I can, but Peggy and Don are very close. And Peggy has opinions and Don has opinions.”

Hopefully, Don and Peggy will remain just friends as they always have been. Both of them have bailed each other out of their respective messes — Don helped Peggy through her pregnancy-related issues during Season One, and Peggy later bailed Don out of jail when he was arrested for a DUI. For the love of all that is decent, please do not let the “Mad Men” writers ever let Peggy become merely one of Don’s conquests. That would be so wrong in so many ways.
Also, wasn’t Peggy dating that counterculture filmmaker (who was ambiguously hot) at the end of Season 4?
And more importantly, Don is still engaged to Megan and should stay eternally in that state. He probably makes a great boyfriend but has no business being a husband.

To be honest, I’ve never liked this dude. Mad Men is very good but Jon… Don’t like him.
I’m rather “meh” on Hamm myself. Now the silver fox on the other hand… *swoons* I love me some John Slattery! Here’s hoping that Roger and Joanie reunite in season 5! She *is* carrying his child, after all…
LOL! 😀
Not a problem, ladies. I will be happy to take Hamm! 🙂 *pant pant pant… annnnd drool*
i hate don draper, but the actor seems like an o.k. dude
Ugh I watched the first 4 seasons on Netflix over the summer. I got completely hooked. I don’t know if I can take the suspense of watching the episodes on TV on a weekly basis.
Same here. I really don’t know if I can handle the weekly dose. I like to take my Mad Men meds all at once!
Can’t wait for this to come back!
I don’t think Don is a very good boyfriend OR husband…but I still love the character!
Love The Hamm. (He’s also great on 30 Rock, I think Season 3/4?)
I never got the appeal of 30 Rock (characters all seemed loathsome) until Hamm did his guest turn. Now I’m hooked.
Any new show should get Hamm to act as viewer ‘starter’ actor.
“Sorry I smell like frosting.”
I can’t wait!
I loved Mad Men, but it’s just been too long since the last season, and I’ve moved on to Boardwalk Empire since then.
Maybe I’ll have a catch up weekend with season 4, and it’ll renew my affection.
I’m switching between Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad. You can have it all! 😀
I actually think if Don and Peggy get together they will be the start of what we consider ‘power couples’. They’d OWN it all.
They could also balance each other’s ‘fuckery’ rather well and keep one another on track.
She’s too good for him? After what she did with her own child I don’t think she’s too good, they have their own unique flaws and shady pasts which is why I think they’d work well…
They could both be brutally honest with one another!
I agree and Don knows that Peggy is’nt a saint, he was the one who told her to move on after her pregnancy, thats what I like about them they are the same sides of a coin.
I agree that as a couple, Don and Peggy would balance each other out, and one wouldn’t just be a sucker for the other. At this point, I can’t imagine who would be an equal to Don besides Peggy…in season 7. They both still have some things to sort out.
Agree about their flaws and shady past. They are both fucked up, more so Don, and exactly why they should remain just friends. Two fucked up people in a relationship is only fodder for more fuck ups. Don and Peggy are one of most fascinating complex fictional characters on TV. I love Don Draper more than Jon Hamm despite Don being a total douche. Ditto with Roger.
I don’t believe these two as a couple. I think his path away from Betty and having this Montreal deb fall into his lap is very realistic. I HATE Don. He seems so real. Too bad he is really good at his job.
I think it’s ridiculous that she’s named “Megan” in the 1950s and 60s. No way.
Peggy should go back with her kid’s father, he’s a tool but he’s in love with her (and secretly she returns the feelings, I think.)
Supposedly, the “real life” Don and Peggy got together, and then he proceeded to act like a macho a-hole to her for decades. Hope they don’t do that on the show.
I think the Anna character shows that there are women Don sleeps with, and a few he talks to, and rarely (or not for long) do the twain meet.
I was surprised they dropped Peggy’s storyline with the priest — he was just her type: judgemental and unavailable.
I think/hope the relationship between Don and Peggy will turn like the one he had with Anna Draper. Can’t wait for the new season!
March 25th can’t get here fast enough! It’s interesting how many fans (myself included) don’t want Don and Peggy to become a couple. I love them as individuals, and on paper their relationship could fall into the classic “will they or won’t they?” /”a bad man saved by the love of a good woman” story.” But, there’s something about a potential romance between them that just seems so wrong. I don’t know if it’s the lack of sexual chemistry or their mentor/mentee relationship but I can’t really imagine them kissing or doing more than that. I doubt they ever will pair up because it might be too predictable for Mad Men. However, in real life the man Don Draper is based on married his Peggy.
I love Peggy and Don in whatever form they come in friends, coworkers, whatever, watching The Suitcase was such an enjoyable episode, I hope to see more.
Peggy and DOn make absolutely no sense as a romantic couple, even as a one-night stand couple. Ultimately, I think he’ll end up back in misery with Betty.
OMFG I love Peggy! Peggy DON”T DO IT, Don will break your heart! There is no other character I have fallen for like Peggy Olsen (and it is because Elizabeth Moss is such a great actress). Actually I love Don Draper too… but in a different way
I seriously do not want Peggy with Don and I don’t want Don’s character to change.
they do not need to tread those waters.
So I guess we’ll be seeing even less of January Jones this season.
That’s OK, just more Pete please!!! Vincent Kartheiser is such a great actor and is underused in the series imo.
I agree about Vincent Kartheiser! I really love watching him, even though Pete has been a weasely character for the most part. He’s my favorite on the show. He and the little darling who plays Sally Draper.
Yes. It staggers me how good the casting is. Mad Men is best consumed in large doses instead of week by week installments. Is totally addictive. I love what they’ve done with Peggy’s character and the depth of the storylines. Oh surely Don and Betty won’t get back together (I’ll be yelling at the tv if they do). The actress who is Sally also conveys a lot of depth and acting skills for a kid. Hyperventilating for season 5.
The Hamm is the best. End of story. I can’t picture anyone else for Don. I can’t wait for the next season. I watched the whole series on Netflix a few months ago.
I don’t know WHY I have never gotten into “Mad Men”…it’s got my name written ALL OVER IT!!! I love the time period…I am an advertising/marketing guru…I am a sucker for great writing, character development, production design…directing…and this show has it ALL in spades!
I do not like Jon Hamm…like he REALLY turns me off…and I understand he’s a good actor, he just REALLY turns me off…which, again, I do not understand…HMMM…yet, I ADORE John Slattery (that silver fox!)…so that should balance the dislike for Hamm…
I don’t know…maybe I need to watch all the seasons at once so that I can invest in it…
I also resisted until a friend gave season 1 to me and insisted I watch it. Definitely watch a few episodes in quick succession and you’ll “get it”. It’s worth it.
Don Draper doesn’t love women…he loves SEX with women. The only women he seems to even remotely respect are Anna & Peggy.
Also think he’d be an awful boyfriend…he can’t stay monogamous, married or not.
So true. I want better from my boyfriend…. but I DO think Hamm is cute. 🙂
Love Don, love Mad Men, I cannot wait for the show to come back. I am obsessed! And yes, for the love of God, do NOT put Don and Peggy together romantically. Their relationship as friends and colleagues and confidants is way more interesting than a romantic one would ever be.
I should never have read this thread but could not resist as I am newly addicted to Mad Men. I got Season 1 for Christmas and am not about midway through Season 3. I have already read things that have spoiled but I am so addicted I cannot read about it!!
I think the Peggy/Don thing may be something they will play with for the remainder of the series, having them get together just as its ending. There was something there between them since the beginning, even if it was just friendship. They have a special bond that men and women just don’t have. Especially men like Don Draper!
My goal is to catch up to the end of Season 4 by March 25. At this rate I’ll be long done 🙂
I like the idea of a Don/Peggy emotional affair, work wife situation. Although I love them together I don’t want them forcing the romantic hand when they are so much more than romantic.
I could see the writers playing with the possibility of a hook up until the last season when perhaps Don & Peggy realize they should be together.
I don’t want it to happen now though because the way Don is, it will never last and it will just be another office hook up. Peggy is better than that!
I love Peggy with PETE…not Don Draper…icky
While Peggy and Pete where compelling, he treated her like trash. I’m sorry I just can’t go there again.
omg can’t wait. I love mad men and a little part of me wants to be Don Draper! (But never date him lol)
ok correct me if i’m wrong but i was intoxicated once while watching the show so i might have imagined this, but didn’t don cry after seeing peggy kiss that short dude? while he had a camera in hand and was filming everyone? lol no i don’t watch regularly
LOL, WTH, I for sure need to catch up so I can see this. And alcohol doesn’t make you hallucinate so you probably did see something like this!
didn’t say it was alcohol. ahem.
(that’s why i’m not sure&asking)
