Hangover stars negotiating $15 million a piece for third installment, are they worth it?

I finally gave in and rented The Hangover 2 over the holidays. It was funnier and a lot raunchier than I expected, but all of the criticism I’ve heard about the movie rang true: it felt old and stale and it had the exact same plot as the first one. The last forty five minutes dragged, and there were more plot holes than I could be bothered to figure out. Despite low critic approval, the film cleaned up at the box office. It grossed $254 million domestically and over $327 million worldwide, to make over a half billion gross. The original Hangover did better domestically, but wasn’t as strong overseas. It grossed $467 million.

It’s been established that the Hangover is a strong franchise, and like every other franchise it’s going to be run into the ground until every drop of money is squeezed out of it. There’s a third movie in the works, and the stars are supposedly negotiating for $15 million each. That’s not upfront – that’s a percentage of the backend which they’re likely to get. They each made a reported $1 million for the first movie and $5 million for the second.

Dealmaking on the studio’s third installment in the raunchy comedy franchise is wrapping up after dragging on for months due in part to the salary demands of its three stars. Sources close to the negotiations say Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms are asking for $15 million each (against backend) to reprise their roles, and they now are likely to get it.

That’s a big raise from 2009’s The Hangover, which was made for about $35 million and paid the headliners under $1 million each (Cooper made the most because he had the biggest name recognition at the time). When the R-rated bachelor-party comedy unexpectedly grossed $467 million worldwide, the studio found itself without talent deals for a sequel. Negotiations were heated for The Hangover Part II, released last May, with the three principals each scoring around $5 million, according to a source, plus back-end compensation that raised their haul into the mid-teens (and counting) when the movie grossed $581 million worldwide.

For the third film, the lead actors, all represented in negotiations by CAA (with agent Jason Heyman taking the lead) and are presenting a united front. (In fact, CAA also reps writer-director Todd Phillips and writer Craig Mazin.)

Warners hopes the next film, a Los Angeles-based story that will deviate from the forgotten-debauchery formula of the first movies, can shoot this summer and be ready for a Memorial Day 2013 release.

That would be great news for Warners, which is saying goodbye to two of its major franchises—Harry Potter, the final installment of which opened last July, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, which the director says will end with this July’s The Dark Knight Rises. In addition, two movies that were on the fast-track for high-profile releases in 2013— Akira and Arthur & Lancelot—have been put on hold as the studio tries to reconcile budgetary issues. All of which increases the urgency to put a third Hangover on the fast track.
“It’ll happen,” says one insider. “It’s a proven commodity, which is rare these days.”

Well I guess if the movies are cleaning up that the stars should get a piece of that. It still sounds like an exorbitant amount of money. Doesn’t it seem like they marginalized Justin Bartha’s role in this film just for this purpose? Like they knew they couldn’t afford more than three big stars? Or maybe Bartha was absent for the first film, so he was absent for the second because they didn’t want to mess up the buddy dynamic between the three leads.

I really hope that they do mess with the formula this time and serve up something that’s slightly more fresh than the second one. We don’t need yet another lost weekend, but you kind of know that’s what you’re getting. You know what this means? Alan, Zach Galifianakis’ character, might get married next. He’s the only one left who is still single, and for good reason. They could try and switch it up and have someone get divorced or have the guys have to watch their kids alone for the weekend. No, they really shouldn’t involve any kids in this mess. That prop baby in the first movie was enough.

no they are not worth it

I only know Bradley Coopers name, so I know less of this casts names than I know of Twilight’s cast.
Remember how we mocked the salary discussions of ….? shoot I also forgot their names :/ Klutz and the other one

    • Tiffany says:

Yes, they are TOTALLY worth it! The studios make HUNDREDS of millions of dollars off of these movies. It isn’t because the writing is so great, it is because of the chemistry of the cast.

$15 million sounds like a lot, but it is a tiny, itty bitty fraction of what the studio and producers make off of the final product. A Hangover III without the main characters/actors would go straight to video and make only pennies.

you took the words out of mouth,
literally, i just yelled that at my computer screen.

    • Capella says:

Double that! I want my refund for actually paying to watch the second one! IT was really awful, no one was laughing in the theater.

  3. Daniel says:

    NOOOOOO!

  4. Nanz says:

I too watched it over the holidays. I thought it was terrible. Like, all the jokes seemed WAY overdone. I liked the first movie; I probably wk t watch a third installment. No way in hell is it worth paying them that much money.

  5. crys737 says:

no more, please. this is just the same recycled crap over and over. what happened to smart movies? huh? what about some originality?!

  6. Gayle says:

Capitalism says yes, common sense says no.

  7. Relli says:

    Ugh just NO.

The first one i laughed so hard i was crying through most of it. the second one in which, my husband made me watch a few weeks ago had some funny parts but for the most part a total snooze fest like it couldn’t end fast enough. the best part was when Alan referred to himself as a “stay at home son.”

  8. layla says:

    Make it stop. Please.

  9. Funnylilou says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! The second one was already the “too much” sequel!!! and so not funny compared to the original!

  10. Trollontheloose says:

I don’t think they are worth/deserving that much but do they care? They are in a franchise which makes tons of money and they want their share rightly so. It has nothing to do with their values in the Hollywood market but it does for this franchise.

  11. layla says:

Guess that Sexiest Man Alive title backfired on Cooper – what a non event. haha! 😉

  12. Ron says:

Do I think they need to make another one? No. Do I think they should get 15 mil each for the third. Yes. The two films have made over a billion dollars whne you factor in seconday market-dvd-on demand–etc. The three actors cleared 18 million in total. That’s less than 2% of the haul. It takes a team to make a good film, but it’s that actors that really carry it and make the characters come to life. 45 million is a bargain.

  13. Asli says:

To answer your question CB = No, they aren’t.

  14. kelbear04 says:

Well, I absolutely love both the movies! I am just one of those people who loved them. I do hope that if they are really going to a third than they should switch it up some. I would also like to see more Justin Bartha.

  15. Maria says:

Hangover 2 was the exact same plot as Hangover 1 just in a different city. That ruined it for me They knew no matter what, people would come watch the second movie just before the first one was so funny. And I hate it because it makes a fool out of movie watchers. If you want to make a sequel, damnit put some effort into it instead of just putting out a bad movie and making a quick buck.

If the movies are making that much money, then the actors rightfully deserve a bigger cut of the pie.

*I posted a similar comment to CDAN so if someone happens to read both those blogs, don’t think I plagiarized someone else’s words :)*

  16. kimberly says:

hahahahahahaa . . . .n o don’t do the movie. it’s the death of your career to do a third, unless your Jason Bourne, which they are not.

You know how people bitch about retarded movies being made and released just to make money for the execs in hollywood? how can hollywood expect people to not illegally download movies with crapshit ideas like this coming out.

This movie would be one of those if they do it.

LMAO at hollywood execs !!!! so stupid.

  17. Lisa says:

The second movie made almost a half-billion dollars…

So…whether I liked the script or not (I did NOT, I was APPALLED at the fact that they didn’t EVEN try to make it original)…the bottom line is…the actors play characters that have a HUGE following that translates into MAJA $$$…so, to quote Steve Miller…”Take the money and run!”

  18. buell says:

If only they had died of alcohol poisoning in the second one….. a girl can dream…..

  19. mln76 says:

I thought the first one was hilarious but I haven’t even bothered with the second. There is no point to a third. Kristen Wiig and Bridesmaids has it all over the Hangover cast simply because they walked away from all that $$$.

  20. Marianne says:

Does it even need a third installment?

I didn’t see the second film (but that was because it pretty much looked just like the first one).

  21. Franny says:

ugh, never buying another piece of LV again after seeing it in this movie. so gross.

  22. carrie says:

the actors who acts the dentist and the insane bearded guy deserve their 15 million because without their characters, there is no movie .Cooper can be the most famous in the trio,he’s useless in the Hangover movies

NB:Hangover movies are stupid and not funny in my opinion

  23. wonderwoman21 says:

No, they aren’t worth it. The Hangover was barely funny, The Hangover 2 was garbage, a Hangover 3 would just be another theatrical sh** stain on America.

  24. anne says:

I could watch the first one over and over and over. The second one – was lucky to make it through without falling asleep. 3rd one – No thanks!

  25. Shelly says:

The 2nd one was not nearly as good as the first one. But I suppose they are worth it if the film makes that much money, regardless of whether it’s any good or not.

  26. Amanda G says:

I love love loved the first one! The second one I saw in the theater and haven’t thought of it since. There were a few laugh out loud moments, but it pissed me off that they didn’t even bother to write a good script. It was the same movie! I’ve never seen a sequel that was exactly the same!

But yes, the actors should get the money they want or more, but I say a big NO to a third movie.

  27. anonymoose says:

Not unless they are curing infectious disease, rescuing abused animals, ending religious warfare, personally feeding malnourished populations, and cleaning my bathroom…SIMULTANEOUSLY.

  28. bagladey says:

I didn’t even go to see the second one.

  29. UKHels says:

I really enjoyed them both actually – if it ain’t broke why fix it?

  30. Sophie says:

well zach galifianakis has hinted that the third one might be about alan escaping a mental institution with the help of the wolf pack, which…I would probably watch.

  31. Camille (The original) says:

    No. Just no.

  32. Madison says:

I’d be asking for as much as I can get as well because once the franchise ends none of these actors will have the star power to be able to ask for that kind of money.

  33. Kim says:

    They arent worth $15.00.

  34. Mairead says:

I found the Hangover 2 funny. Then again, I have the most puerile sense of humour, so it’s not surprising. I even laughed at The Love Guru 😳

I have heard that it’s going to be partly set in Dublin. Setting Zach Galifianakis’s character loose on Temple Bar should be pretty entertaining though. 😆

  35. Lemon says:

I think they are worth it because of how much money it made. It should try to get better writers though because those guys are working with very little content. Its not their fault that there arent any good writers any longer or the lame ones have cornered the market with their connections. These guys can makedogshit funny which is what amazes me. But I would like to see some real celebrity level humor there- not just dried up slap stick..

  36. alexandra says:

The second one was pure $hit. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice no effin way

  37. Susan says:

No one deserves this kind of money – however they deserve it as much as the others who make it and their movies do way worse.

  38. lisa says:

I like Hangover 1. funny. then they did the other one. OK..

I just think it would be nice if a movie does well the studios and such would just learn to let it stop. Just like with Bridesmaids..they want a sequel. WHY? Melissa M was the best part of the movie. Everyone else was just OK to me.
So glad Kristen Wiig is saying no. Smart woman.

  39. normades says:

I love Ed Helms in this and in the Office. And Justin Bartha is just really cute. I’d take either of these dudes over Cooper any day.

  40. just saying says:

Isn’t it more interesting that he took his mom on a double date with Zoe Kate and what’s his name. Can’t decide if that’s sweet or a fail.
