This is an odd little compliment to yesterday’s discussion on how certain parties have criticized Jennifer Lawrence for being too “fat” to play Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. My point that Jennifer’s body is not only perfect in real life but also quite fit for the role of Katniss still stand, and I do hope that Hollywood doesn’t give JLaw a complex even though she’s publicly laughing off the insensitive and inaccurate remarks. During yesterday’s post, I also wondered how come no issue had been made of why Liam Hemsworth, who plays Gale Hawthorne, was also larger and more filled out than the rest of District 12’s citizens. Of course, even semi-careful readers of the book will know that both Katniss and Gale are hunters and therefore not nearly as emaciated as the rest of the Seam’s inhabitants.
Interestingly enough, Liam covers the May issue of Men’s Health UK, and he asserts that he did in fact lose a lot of weight in preparation for the role. However, if one thinks about the timeline — Liam had previously bulked up a lot to audition for the Thor role that Chris Hemsworth ended up securing — it makes sense. A Thor-like body would have legitimately stood out in District 12 … can you imagine? Here are some excerpts:
He lost weight to play Gale: “My brother Chris texted me about a month before shooting and said, ‘Remember, it’s called Hunger Games, not Eating Games.’ I lost quite a bit of weight for the role. My character lives in (the dystopian, impoverished) District 12 in the film, which is basically like living in the Depression. He’s hunting for his food everyday and trying to provide for himself and his family. He’s not eating a lot. He doesn’t have a lot of money to buy food. I wanted to get a good sense of what it’s like to be hungry. I was training five or six days a week, and eating a lot less. When we started shooting, I wasn’t training as much, but I was eating only very minimally. For the month leading up to shooting, it was very clean, healthy food. When we started shooting, I would have one meal a day. It wasn’t that it was even very healthy. It was whatever I could get, and not a lot of it.”
His training included archery, climbing, rappellingand yoga: “I was training with an ex- Navy SEAL. He kept me in the gym every day for an hour or so and he would just completely destroy me. It was very high-intensity. I’d work out for an hour and have to lay down for 20 minutes or half an hour before I’d drive anywhere because I’d pass out. He’d get me to lift various things or take me out to the car park and we’d get a sled kind of thing and he’d load it up with weights and I’d have to push it for 50 meters and then run 50 meters and then pick up two-deep kettle bells and walk those 50 meters. It was just about destroying me for an hour everyday.”
He loves squirrels: “It’s weird. I made a comment in an interview once that I found squirrels comedic. We don’t have squirrels in Australia, so I was in a meeting in Hollywood the first time I saw one, and I found them amusing. Somehow, I’m now obsessed with squirrels.”
[From Men’s Health UK]
Liam is indeed fascinated with squirrels. While I ignored this fact when initially covering his recent Details interview, I recall the interviewer mentioning that Liam kept laughing his ass off every time he saw a squirrel while golfing. I bet he had a great time while hunting for those critters as Gale, and I bet Jennifer Lawrence probably grew accustomed to the hilarity every time he saw one scale a tree.

Wonder if he likes chipmunks too? Could explain what he sees in Miley…
Hahaha @Snarky. Your name is very fitting at the moment, but oh how right you are regarding Miley.
yes! this explains it.
A bit over the top for about five minutes of screen time.
i know…um i barely even saw him in the movie
He is so hot!
yeah, he’s on screen for like 5 minutes
hahhaha exactly what I (and Im sure others) are thinking. His “role” consisted of about 5 lines and staring dreamily into the camera with his puppydog eyes. give me a break.
idk if you’ve read the books.
but he plays a much larger role in the next two installments in the series, So it’s really important for him to lay the groundwork and make an impact in the role now.
I admire the dedication of him and the film staff for laying proper groundwork now so there isn’t a huge change when the next films come out and he does play a big role.
he wasnt even in the movie for more than 5mins lol
He’s yummy. Definitely made my morning. **swoonage**
I wonder why he did all of that training for just standing there and looking sad. I know his character plays a greater part in the last book, but they aren’t shooting that yet…
Okay, the squirrel thing is entirely too adorable. I love a man who enjoys animals. Gale has a much larger role in books 2 and 3, so I’m sure he’ll get more screen time in the following films. His dedication to the role is impressive, regardless of what little he had to do in this first film — it bodes well for Catching Fire and Mockingjay!
It’s so weird I finished reading the first couple a few days before the movie opened… I had every intention of watching it on opening weekend and then I just lost interest … Anyway Liam look good
Look at that picture of him as Gale at the reaping. He is still big and muscular. He doesn’t look skinny. So again why doesn’t he get the same flack as Jennifer Lawrence for not looking like he is starving?
The weight he lost was probably all he gained to try out for Thor.
I agree – its a double standard for the male and female characters. He is so good looking!!!! WOW! I think its safe to assume none of the actors were really portrayed accurately in accordance to their weight…
I get the squirrel thing. I’m Australian, and we don’t have them here. We have plenty of possums, but they’re bigger and nocturnal. Besides, a lot of our native fauna is poisonous (we have the only mammals in the world that will sting you, believe it or not). Our golf courses often have kangaroos, but no squirrels. I’ve always thought squirrels looked really funny; you guys are lucky!
Thank you! Though Americans might argue that you are lucky to see something as cool as a kangaroo hopping around. That would be so exciting! It’s all relative I guess. The vast majority of people here really take squirrels for granted and they are considered vermin for getting into bird feeders and such. I think they are adorable and quite intelligent.
I know this will sound insane to most people, but a few years ago I watched a squirrel get hit by a car and somehow knew it wasn’t dead. Initially I wanted to just move her out of the road, but she was bleeding from the mouth so I took her home. When she woke up she couldn’t use her right front leg, but she could hop around. I syringe fed her for a week until she could eat solid food, then I had to hold it for her until her leg healed. Three weeks later in total, she was ready to be released. Most people wouldn’t bother, and perhaps it was pointless in the long run, but it was incredibly rewarding!
That is so sweet 🙂
Why he was like in 3 scenes and got maybe a paragraph of dialog in the movie. Not to mention he looked just the same.
Maybe miley joined him on the healthy eating and lost that baby fat because of it.
Clean shaven as Gale he looks too much like that Taylor Lautner kid. Not sexy.
But a lil scruffy on the cover pic… GOOD LAWD! The things I would do to him would ruin him for other women!
Thank you a bunch for sharing this with all people you actually understand what you’re speaking approximately! Bookmarked. Kindly additionally visit my site =). We can have a hyperlink exchange agreement among us
