Alexander Skarsgard’s piercing eyes on Play magazine will haunt your soul

True Blood’s tall drink of Nordic water, Alexander Skarsgard, is on the cover of the Sydney Herald Sun’s Sunday magazine supplement. He’s promoting his role in Battleship, that film version of the popular peg board game, or another flimsy excuse for epic scenes of stuff getting blown up. I wonder what kind of action films based on kids’ games will be around when my kid is old enough to watch them. Maybe Chia Pet: The War of the Sprouts, Connect Four or Die and Hungry Hungry Hippos Revenge. On one hand I hope Battleship doesn’t do well at the box office so we won’t be subjected to more of these movies, but on the other it’s got Askars and lovely Liam Neeson in it, so I hope it does well for their sake.

In his interview with The Herald Sun, Skarsgard emphasizes that he doesn’t talk much about his private life, which we’ve heard from him before. It’s a good strategy and one more stars should adopt. He does say some really nice things about his dad, actor Stellan Skarsgard, and the experience of working with him in Melancholia. He also reminds us that Battleship is his first studio film, which is surprising to me because he’s gotten so much press that I think of him as a much bigger star. He should be. Here’s more:

On his career: “I’m fighting really hard not to get typecast, because to me that’s creative suicide in a way.”

On working with his dad: “Dad is one of my best friends, so I love him so much. He is a really, really cool cat, and we worked toegther in 1983, my friend movie (Ake och hans varld), back in Sweden and we have done an animated movie – where we don’t work together you just do voices. But this was the first time [Melancholia] we actually had some scenes together, and it was an amazing experience.”

On why he chose to do Battleship: “I read the script, it’s big, epic, fun, a really cool story, but I care more about the brothers, the relationship than the explosions. The process of making the movie, that’s what’s fun as an actor obviously, and this is my first big studio movie, so I didn’t really know. I heard stories from other actors on other movies where sometimes they feel that they are being micromanaged and there’s no creative freedom, they can’t really have fun with it. [But] Pete Berg, who is an actor himself, is very open.”

On adjusting to life in Los Angeles: “In Stockholm, all my friends live within five blocks of each other, we wouldn’t even have to call each other, I would just go down to the local coffee shop and I would run into friends and see them. In L.A. that doesn’t really happen to me.”

On how his father Stellan Skarsgard taught him to keep his life private: “He was always very protective of the family, and us kids and he could be very open and talk about his work and himself and his characters, but you wouldn’t see like 25 house tours or ‘Welcome to the Skarsgard family and this is my home, what’s in my fridge’. I think that keeps you kind of sane, and that’s important for me as well, to not share every thing with everyone.”

In terms of the photo shoot, it seems like the same brooding look we always see from Askars, but that’s fine with me. It really works for me. I just wish there were more photos.

Skarsgard seems up to doing these cheesy action movies. He would make a great romcom star. I don’t necessarily want that type of career for him, but he would be a swoonworthy leading man. Channing Tatum needs some competition. We’ll soon get to see Alex expand his acting chops. He’s got three more films coming out this year.

Alex is shown at The Independent Spirit Awards on 2/25, at the VF Oscar Party on 2/26 and at Wondercon on 3/17. Credit: PCNPhotos and WENN.com. Scans via Skarsgard News

He would be utterly perfect to play Christian from “Fifty Shades of Grey”. And, clearly, he isn’t choosy about doing big budget films.

  2. Eleonor says:

Bloody hell did he start to mess with his face?? His eyes look strange to me! Not a lift but something like botox! NO ALEX PLEASE!
I made some goole research, is that only an impression of mine?

    • Laura says:

No they just did a bad job of trying to photoshop out the bags under his eyes

      • cr says:

And this is tons better than the Men’s Journal (or even GQ) cover, where they photoshopped it to death.

  3. Esmom says:

He just doesn’t do it for me…all I can see is a young Jim Carrey in his features, especially when he smiles.

Lol at “Hungry Hungry Hippos Revenge.” I think I sprained my eyes rolling them when I first saw the Battleship trailer — seriously do these film producers have so little creativity that they have to stoop to board games for inspiration?! And don’t even get me started on all the sh$§%y book adaptations (cough Fifty Shades of Grey cough).

  4. Emily says:

I think it’d be really interesting to see him in a romcom, because that’s totally different than anything I’ve ever seen him in. There are so few good ones these days though, he might have to wait a long time.

  5. The Original Original says:

Hes hot. He reminds me of my exhusband who was swedish as well but slightly better looking. That my friends is why he is an ex. LOL. Seriously though I cant stay away from the Swedes. Yum.

  6. whosnatch says:

Speaking of romcom actors, does anyone else see a resemblance to Bill Pullman?

In a much more “I may brood before and after, but Lady be prepared for me to rock your proverbial world” way of course.

  7. Jo says:

This is off thread, but somewhat related. I watched the 1988 film The Unbearable Likeness of Being (Daniel Day Lewis, Juliette Binoche, Lena Olin) over the weekend. Alexander Skarsgard’s father, Stellan, is also in it. He, of course, plays an evil, despicable part in the US Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. However, he is stunning in the 1988 movie.

My God that man is gorgeous! Thank you for posting! I totally get the mixed emotions for this movie, but I will definitely sit through it for Alex.

I think it’s a smart move for him to start mixing things up as far as the roles he takes on. He’s not shying away from big budget, popcorn fare to art house fims to indies. Now he’s been cast as the lead in “Hidden,” which is an elevated horror script that came hot off the Black List. Sounds pretty promising to me. I can’t wait to see him on the big screen more!

    • Mr.Smurf says:

I think the only reason why he even did this movie was because he said he didn’t want to keep playing a version of Eric. That’s the only way that I can see him taking on this role.

  9. bigchili says:

Oh, how I love this man. *sigh*

  10. reddmasters says:

    Even his voice is sexy!

  11. Mirella says:

You just made my Monday! *swoon*

  12. Kaye says:

All blond men except Alexander Skarsgard: meh.

    Askars: yes please.

  13. grabbyhands says:

I get that he doesn’t want to be typecast, but I hope he doesn’t start doing a lot of these types of movies because this look incredibly stupid and he’s a better actor than that.

  14. Insertrandomname says:

If you think this guy is sexy you should check out his younger brother Bill Skarsgård – who is also an actor. Love him 🙂

    • lila says:

Bill has Steve Buscemi eyes. I can’t look at him without laughing. Plus he’s still a baby practically.

  15. TheOriginalVictoria says:

SMDH…I am really trying to understand his appeal. As Eric, I get it.

As Alexander, I’m like…”So did you see the Good Wife yesterday?”

  16. The Original Mia says:

I’m looking forward to Battleship. It has cute guys, aliens and explosions. I’m there.

I hope he strikes it big. Lord knows True Blood isn’t giving him anything creatively to do.

  17. anonymous says:

HE’S UGLYYYY… looks like will ferrel twin brother.. lol

  18. sauvage says:

Am I really the only one to think that ‘Battleship’ looks like one of the stupidest movies EVER? The trailer is so bad I cringe evry time I see it, my first thought being: ‘Oh my God, how did oscar winner Liam Neeson end up in this crap?’, my second thought being: ‘Oh my God, I cannot even watch it for the sake of Skarsgard, I just can’t!’. Regarding Neeson, I’ll give him a pass because that filming probably fell into the period where he worked like crazy to distract him fom Natasha Richardson’s death. Regarding Skarsgard, maybe it was a money thing?

    • lila says:

Why would it be the stupidest movie ever? Looks like a fun summer popcorn flick (which is what it’s intended to be) to me.

      • sauvage says:

I just found the dialogue so over-the-top-corny. Let’s agree to disagree then, shall we? 🙂

There is a saying in Austria which translates as “Tastes and slaps are different.”.

  19. Nanea says:

    ASkars!

What a way to start the week!

A bit off topic, but also on: the Guardian did a piece on Stellan a few days ago, ASkars is getting another sibling.

  20. foozy says:

there’s just something so sexy about him

  21. Jenna says:

I’m finally getting over my addiction to this man and now pics and interviews are coming out the ying-yang. Oh boy.

  22. Gwen says:

    I love him *sigh*

I do fear that Hollywood will be cruel to him. True Blood sucks at this point – I hope this won’t work against him.

    • Laura says:

True Blood is HBOs highest rated show, more than Game if Thrones

      • X says:

No way! I did not know that. Game of Thrones has rocked my little world. I’m an ex true blood fan, but Game of Thrones is amazing. Truly surprised by this news. Thanks for the info.

  23. Amanda G says:

He is the only reason I watch True Blood!

  24. ramona says:

I want a film starring ASkars and Fassy as, like, the eldest sons of feuding kingdoms and they go to battle leading armies of kick-arse warriors in some sort of Game of Thrones-y type world in which I get to pick the winner and no boys get to wear shirts.

  25. hairball says:

I can’t believe Alexander Skarsgard did “Battleship” either. It looks god-awful – BEYOND awful.

I cringe too when see the trailer. Sorry, I like him too, but if he’s going to do a (what appears to be) complete crap Hollywood movie, then he should probably stop saying how he only takes roles that challenge him etc.

  26. Maria says:

    I tottally hit him XD
