Charlize Theron: “I hate actors who quote Nietzsche, I don’t like pretentious s–t”

Charlize Theron is the cover girl for the June issue of InStyle Magazine (US). She’s also on the cover of the Australian magazine Madison – I’m including the cover image at the end of the post. I really like Charlize’s InStyle cover shoot, for what it’s worth. Charlize has been churning out some really great photo shoots lately, but usually InStyle’s pictorials aren’t this… fierce…? Is that the right word? In any case, Charlize looks gorgeous. As you know, she’s promoting Snow White and the Huntsman AND Prometheus, both out in June. And she has no problems talking about babies and boys and she even comes close to claiming that she hasn’t had any work done – do you believe her? Hm… anyway, here are some highlights from both InStyle and Madison:

On aging: “I don’t feel like I’m aging at all. I don’t think about that stuff. Especially not at 36. I see my face and my body changing, and they’re all changes I’m OK with. Part of me understands I may not be in front of the camera forever, and maybe not just because of age, but because of me. I wouldn’t have started my own production company if I didn’t feel that way.”

Becoming a mom: “So far I’m not surprised by anything about being a mom,” she said. “It’s all pretty great, but that’s what I expected.”

On her single status: “I’m always open to a relationship, but I’m not putting those feelers out there now.”

On having adopted son Jackson: Charlize recalled a letter she’d written when she was 8-years-old. “My mother found [it]. It said, ‘Would you please take me to orphanage, so that I can go and adopt a baby?’ I always knew I would adopt – always… It was never a question that one day I would have a child.”

On what she would do if she could switch careers at her current age: “I would be an amazing butler. I’m very good at organizing a house.”

Being a single mother: “You know, I don’t think any mother aims to be a single mum. I didn’t wish for that, but it happened.”

She’s not looking for a husband: “It’s never been a fantasy of mine. Marriage has never been that important to me. I don’t know why exactly. Some might say it’s because my parents didn’t have a good marriage, but I don’t think so. I treat my relationships like marriages. The ceremony isn’t that important to me,” she adds.

She hates pretentious people: “You know what I can’t stand? I hate actors who come and quote Nietzsche. I don’t like pretentious s**t. I like being around people who like to live life and understand the value of it. I need to be around people who understand we’re not curing cancer here. I like professional actors who show up, do the job and are not a pain in the a** to either myself or the crew. I don’t believe in this idea that if you’re f****d up and Method, that’s the only way to do good work. It’s bulls**t. A professional actor does their homework beforehand and they do their job. Then when it’s all said and done, they have a beer with the crew. That’s what a professional actor does.”

[Excerpts via the NY Post, Become Gorgeous and The Gossip Girls]

I love her diatribe against pretension. I want to know if she’s directing that at a specific actor. Who has she worked with recently? Michael Fassbender. Uh, no, not pretentious. He probably buys the first round for the crew. Idris Elba? God, I hope not. Noomi Rapace? From what I hear, Noomi’s pretty low-key and sweet. Kristen Stewart? Hmm. Charlize seems to like her. Chris Hemsworth? Doubtful. Damn, I want to know who she’s calling out!!

As for her statement about marriage – I believe her. I don’t think she’s one of those “Oh, I don’t want to get married unless you’ve got an engagement ring YES A MILLION TIMES YES!!!” women. I think Charlize’s marriage apathy is for real. And I do think it has a lot to do with her mom and dad’s situation.

If she hates pretension, she must have a lonely life in Hollywood.

  2. Crystal says:

Feirce bish. Better than your faves. Flawfree woman. This promotional tour for SWATH has been amazing. I never realised how funny and likable she is. Loved her on unscripted.

  3. cupidityrox says:

First this woman is beyond stunning!
Second she has the truth of it. Actors who act entitled & snobby need to be brought down a peg. I mean comon you play pretend. For a living. It’s not that serious!

  4. Jayna says:

I don’t think she has had any work done. I saw her in Young Adult, and her face showed her age of 35, normal small signs of agIng, but still beautiful.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

She was SO amazing in Young Adult. I was always indifferent to her before I saw that movie. Now I am a definitive fan.

    • ZenB!tch says:

She was on Piers whatsit earlier this year, he started asking her about aging and she was like “dude, I’m only 36!”

    • RN says:

I just loved that movie. I’m the same as you – before that movie, I never paid any attention to her. Now I love her. She was also on an episode of “Top Chef”, and she seemed very down-to-earth.

    • momma's 38 says:

you don’t need work done when you are photoshopped into next week!
Her right arm looks ridiculous and her face is avatarish. I wish they would quit doing that and leave their faces more natural…

  5. marie says:

Always beautiful. Some may consider her a b-ch but I like her anyway.

  6. Liv says:

Oh my god, I want to know, too!! 😉

  7. sarahtonin says:

I guess that means that Kristen and her sat around in the trailer reading Twilight together giving each other back rubs.

  8. shiny says:

They all mess with their faces. This is a FACT. CT is no different the only differences is her works are subtle. Plus I don’t buy mags anymore too much f*** Photoshopped celebs on the cover.

  9. mln76 says:

Stunning woman. I always feel like people who go around quoting (fill in the blank) Haven’t really read the books just the Cliff Notes you know?

  10. lower-case deb says:

unless it’s Armand Assante, i guess.

  11. mandy says:

it’s not for nothing that a few yers she had refused the advances of clooney. she is so intelligent . i love her and her charism mmmh so amazing and pretty woman .

    • Shrubee says:

Wow! when did that happen? did this site report something of that sort?
      could someone provide a link?
      NEED DETAILS

      • mandy says:

the only thing I can say is that a few years three or four years he had met her and things would have displeased charliz (notably he was gone in special evenings). I hate gigi. mr is far from being a saint. therefore I have something about him I remember. if i find a link i give you .(sorry bad english

  12. almond says:

The way I read it it seemed like it was about Stewart, what with her latest interview taking place in a bookstore and her waxing poetic about this and that book. Plus, she seems like she takes herself and her “craft” entirely too seriously. Also, isn’t she self-proclaimed method?

As for Charlize and her beauty, I don’t think she’s had any work done. But it did seem like her face was a bit puffy at the SWATH premiere. Then again, it might just have been a weird angle.

    • nina says:

I highly doubt that was a thinly veiled diss on Kristen Stewart. I saw some coverage of their premiere and Charlize kept goosing her ass and holding hands with her while they walked together. There seems to be a genuine affection there.

Charlize has been in the business a long time, she’s seen a lot of aholes in her time. Stewart hardly rates with the worst of them I”m sure.

      • Esmom says:

Hmm, I thought it might have been K Stew, too, because of her literary-pretentious interview. But maybe not. You are right that Charlize has been in the business for a lot longer than K Stew, too, so I’m sure she’s seen more than her fair share of faux scholars that are way worse than Kristen (who, no doubt, is influenced by Rob, btw).

      • almond says:

Maybe it was because of the proximity between the two interviews that I immediately made the connection. But at the same time I can’t think of anyone else who worked with her recently. I certainly can’t picture Idris Elba spewing stale philosophical musings and acting all methody on set.

As for how buddy-buddy they are on the crapet (unintentional spelling error but it stays), I’ll take it with a grain of salt. I always do when it comes to actors. They can’t exactly badmouth their costars. I’ll stick by my initial guess.

      • nina says:

Naw. They went out together after the premiere to a club. She doesn’t have to hang with the girl if she was so annoyed with her pretensions. My take is she thinks she’s just some funny kid.

Kristen is annoying and exposes her ignorance often, but I’ll say it again – her offenses are minute in a town like hollywood. Charlize isn’t talking about anyone specifically I bet, more like a general attitude of entitlement and pretension that is simply a feature of industry people.

      • almond says:

It seems you’re more informed on the matter than I am; I’ll have to give up my awesome theory. Though, for sh!ts and giggles I’ll go in the other direction and support Michael K’s theory that these two bumped uglies.

      • toriL says:

        http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m41hjyXwOj1qct7h1o2_r1_250.gif

Here’s one of the goosing gifs. They seem to get along swell.

      • nina says:

Who wouldn’t want to bump Charlize’s pretty?

I don’t know if I”m better informed, I just don’t think CHarlize is “winking” in my direction during a SWATH interview, attempting to make me realize she’s talking about Kristen. That’s a long shot and a half, to promote while trying to imply and undermine the whole point of promoting.

      • bluhare says:

Count me in on the Kristen Stewart guess. I think she’s pretentious as hell, and they are on a promotional tour for the movie so it’s not like you can assume every interaction is real.

    • Tiffany says:

I understand the “fun” aspect of trying to decifer who she was talking about…but in reality, she is probably talking about hundreds of actors she has worked with in her many years in the business.

There are a TON of people in the arts who act like that (and there are a ton of people who don’t). I don’t think she was necessarily referencing a specific person.

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

My guess is she was talking about De Niro. They worked together in “Men of Honor” in 2000, and he is known for method acting.

      • Denise says:

DITTO!! Plus, she did a birthday video for KS recently where she totally gushed about her. No way she’d do that if she didn’t actually like her.

    • unicorny says:

It’s not Kristen Stewart, in this interview on access hollywood she talks about how she loves Kristen and would jump off a building for her. I know celebrities act like they get along when they’re doing promo but they don’t say things like that if they hate them.

      http://watch.accesshollywood.com/video/charlize-theron:-kristen-stewart-is-the-real-deal/1601768565001#

  13. chloe says:

She’s one of my favorite actresses, I don’t get the beyotch comments made about her, I’ve always heard she’s very nice and down to earth on movie sets. I’m happy about her adopting her son and I hope she keeps her baby off the radar and doesn’t use him for promotion like other actors.

    • fluffybunny says:

Funny, I was just wondering about the stories about her being an epic pain in the ass on set.

I wax and wane when it comes to Charlize. She’s more than just a pretty face, but I wouldn’t call myself a fan. There’s something I just can’t put my finger on.

  14. carrie says:

since when to be educated is pretentious?
and i don’t believe her tirade against method acting is honest because she used THE method in many movies

but she’s beautiful and a great actress

    • Tanguerita says:

she is not talking about education, but about flaunting it in everybody’s face. Same about methode – do whatever you have to do to get the job done, but please stop blubbering about it. Yes, I’m talking to you, James Franco. BTW, has she ever worked with Franco?because to me it seems like everything she said about pretentious actors aimed at him.
I like her more and more every day.

      • carrie says:

I’m french and I guess i used the bad word :maybe the word is cultivated?
but sometimes it’s nice to learn some actors are cultivated because the acting job is so vain and idiot
I still think she trashs the Actors Studio method (like Darren Aronofsky trashed the method during BLACK SWAN promotion)

      • bluhare says:

My first thought after Stewart was Franco. And then Sean Penn.

Carrie, pretentious is saying things to show how superior you are to everyone else. That’s what she means, not that she doesn’t like cultivated people. Cultivated doesn’t have then negative connotation pretentious does.

    • LittleDeadGirl says:

I agree with the above poster. I love reading books and I’ve had “high brow” conversations but there is a difference between discussing what you love and using it as a weapon against people or to prove how smart you are. I’ve met those people who quote these obscure authors and when I ask them anything in depth they draw a blank.

      • almond says:

That made me think of Mary Bennet: full of quotes and lacking understanding.
I think I’m being a bit meta and ironic at the same time, making literary references.

    • another nina says:

I think being pretentious means quoting Nietzsche without having read him. On a side note, I think stewart is the definition of pretentiousness but she probably saves it for interview purposes, to impress us, commoners.
Even in real life, there seems to be a certain animosity between street smarts and over-educated ones. And I think it’s one of those cases.
I don’t mind, say, Franko – he is beyond exceptionally well educated with a PhD from Yale, both of his parents graduated from Stanford, his grandparents are famous surgeants (sp?) and art gallery owners.
Charliz is from a different stock — no education, very troubled family background. It does not make her better or worse than him, they just seem to have a different path. But her path is much more common than his in Hollywood.

    • ol cranky says:

@Carrie – she’s not talking about people who are educated/cultivated and express themselves comfortably, she’s talking about the pretentious chest-puffery of people who may (or may not) actually know what they’re speaking about and use certain references (and them big words) specifically to highlight their own grandiosity

      • original almond says:

Exactly, very well said. It’s about image with these people, not substance.

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Franco is a good guess. My other guess (besides De Niro) would be Christian Bale. Has she ever worked with him?

  15. TheOriginalVictoria says:

The Bitch is everything. She is in my top three Most beautiful;/talented actresses of all time.

She’s honest but friendly and non douchey about it.

I immediately thought of McBitey the minute the words came across my screen. She is so pretentious and “metho” which is annoying.

I too feel that way about marriage. It’s not for everyone and it’s what you make it. I totally believe in the institution of it, but was never obsessed about it. I was actually surprised that I did get married go the kids route. That was never my goal in life.

Being a single mom is a lot easier when you can afford to be.

  16. KLO says:

I feel like there’s a whole new wave of A-list Hollywood actors beginning to claim that they hate “pretentious shit”.
I think it’s probably some new PR trend.
I don’t believe for a second that at least 80% of what those actors say in interviews isn’t premeditated.

A few years ago “being method” was the cool thing, now it’s the other way around.
It’s like fashion – one season they sell you the miniskirt, the next year it’s out of fashion and they sell you the knee-length skirt. Keep changing it up to keep selling the product.

    • Crystal says:

I see no lies in this comment. All Hollywood stars like to act they’re so above it all but they’re pretentious to a certain degree. It’s the latest trend to do interviews and talk about how simple and down to earth and unpretentious you are. Makes it easier for the simple folk to relate. I know Goop is hated here for thinking she’s above everyone but like madonna she’s willing to admit that she thinks she’s above you. None of that down to earth crap that all the female actresses/singers talk about.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

By gum, I think she’s got it.

With all of the ad space, disingenuousness, Photoshop Fantasies and telegraphed ‘candidness’, I can find more that’s believable in my own fever dreams.

Granted, no one needs my pennies, but I’ve never known what these rags are trying to prove. Whatever it is, it’s not taking.

  17. RATTP says:

“You know what I can’t stand? I hate actors who come and quote Nietzsche. I don’t like pretentious s**t. I like being around people who like to live life and understand the value of it. She’s talking about shit like NATALIE PORTMAN, no doubt.

    • Smeg says:

Viggo Mortensen maybe? She starred with him in The Road (2009) and to get into character he would sleep in his clothes, starve himself and eat crickets

      • Esmom says:

        Haha. That would be annoying.

      • almond says:

Oh yeah, didn’t he do the same thing for LOTR? He wore his ranger outfit all the time, never took baths and slept in the woods. It was in keeping to his character, apparently.

      • ol cranky says:

note to self: call Viggo’s agent and make sure he only gets roles of characters that bathe regularly

      • Jenne Frisby says:

(About Viggo) He could be in the running, but he’s always seemed intellectual but inward to me. I don’t think he would try to intimidate someone with a false pretension. And while I can imagine him wearing his Ranger outfit as much as he could, he did take it off long enough to go surfing with all the guys. They did a lot of surfing during that shoot. Remember when Viggo bruised the whole side of his face on his board and they could only shoot him in profile for about a week?

I’m willing to bet this is Michael Fassbender. Didn’t one of his last interviews have him talking about how serious he is about method acting? And he’s obviously totally into himself. I can definitely see him drinking too much and having a too-loud “profound” conversation with… anybody.

      • Jens says:

I thought Fassbender as well. I get a weird vibe from watching their interviews together for Promeseus that Charlize was “open” to a little hook-up sitch and Fassbender was, perhaps, less intently interested in whatever she wanted at the level that she wanted. (His girlfriends certainly haven’t equaled her level of togetherness, which makes me think perhaps she’s just “not his type.” Also, while I’m sure he finds her pretty, he doesn’t seem into blondes.) I’m wondering if this isn’t her response to a perceived rejection. There is no way a woman with her looks and personality has substantial experience with guys being less interested in her than she is in them, if that makes sense.

    • VanessaP. says:

Charlize has been in the industry a long time..I’m thinking Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp and maybe even Al Pacino. All of them are well known as Method Actors..ESP Pacino..just sayin..

      • laji says:

Keanu Reeves is a Method actor? Hahahahaha that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in so long. If he is using the Method, um, I don’t know that he’s digging as deeply as he could be.

But this is the difference between American actors and the rest of the world, pretty much. Every one else just “acts” and most of them are pretty great at it. Just look at all the phenomenal British actors, most of whom act circles around America Method actors. I find that Method actors very rarely do “subtle”. Or maybe that’s just a cultural difference. Hard to tell.

      • Member says:

Johnny Depp isn’t a method actor either (he’s the playful type not the serious one) …on your list just Al Pacino is a method actor but for what she has said (in interviews) she loves those three actors…

  18. Sisi says:

Her make-up is always so flawless and she seems to be able to rock all kinds of looks. I’ve been experimenting with mine the past few weeks and keep ending to look ridiculous :/

  19. Rice says:

Wow. On a previous thread, everyone was bashing Kristen for using the “f” word. But when Charlize says it, it sounds like angels singing? What a bunch of hypocritical, pretentious people. Charlize has worked with numerous actors, but because everyone loves to hate KStew, it must be her that CT is talking about *eye roll*.

    • LittleDeadGirl says:

I think the difference is she only dropped the f bomb once and it made sense in the context. I don’t find Kristen’s swearing annoying, I swear a lot too, but there are times it seems forced and I think if you are sitting down for an interview you have to tone it down.

    • Crystal says:

People here are biased towards people they like. Cry more…
Goop wouldnt get away with it, AngelIna probably could… That’s how celebitchy rolls. Scroll past next time if the comments are so hypocritical and pretentious.

    • alex says:

I think Charlizes’ cursing was stupid and unnecessary here as well.
Its an interview, be professional, be polished. Charlize has always been icy and over-rated.

And why couldn’t she be talking about Fassbender? Because people here have the hots for him?

    • almond says:

Theron uses it sparingly, to emphasize her attitude towards a certain idea or thing. Stewart uses it as a universal modifier. Do you see where there might be a linguistic disconnect? As someone said in the other thread, cursing should be used in communicating as spices are in cooking. The last time I dumped a whole jar of curry in my sauce things didn’t end well.

    • bns says:

“I don’t believe in the idea that if you’re f****ed up and Method, that’s the only way to do good work.”

“I don’t f**** believe in the f**** idea that if you’re f**** up and f**** method, that’s the only f**** way to do good f**** work.”

      See the difference?

      • Rice says:

Yes, indeed. One is better than many. My mother never cared whether I used one curse word or many. Cursing is cursing. As Crystal said, people are biased. Thanks for the advice, Crystal.

  20. NerdMomma says:

I never felt one way or the other about Charlize until recently when she did all of those skits for Funny or Die. She was hilarious! If you like her at all you should watch her on there.

  21. LittleDeadGirl says:

I love love love her and I’m seeing Snow White mostly for her and Promotheus for looking over all good. She’s so spot on with her talk on pretentious people. It’s one thing to read books and talk about stuff that interests you and another thing to try and sound smart for smart’s sake. I feel the same way about marriage. I’m not running towards it or away from it and most of my relationships have been long term and have felt almost like marriages. Maybe one day I’ll do the whole thing but it will something intimate and private. I just don’t understand having 500 people at your wedding. It’s expensive as hell. It seems more romantic to me to do something small but to each his own.

  22. marie says:

@ Rice.. gimme a break, I have no problem with people using the word, its when they use it every other word that makes them sound immature and dumb.. That’s not just aimed at Stewart, that’s aimed at anybody who thinks it makes them look cool..

    • Rice says:

So, what you’re saying is that f*ck can make you sound mature and intelligent if you use it in the right context/situation. If I say, “That man is f*cking moron”, or, “The pizza place f*cked up my order”, then I sound mature and intelligent. But if I say, “Man, that’s some f*cking good ice cream” then I sound immature and dumb. Riiight.

      • marie says:

haha, no I never said you sound mature or intelligent cussing. I said it makes you sound immature/dumb when you use it every other word.. And that’s because when you use it that often, it’s like you learned a new word and have to show everybody..I have no problem with cussing, I do it-I just don’t think it has to be every other word to get your point across, use it sparingly and it has more effect.

      • Rice says:

I see your point. I don’t agree with it but much love to ya anyway, Maria. Have a great day and I hope I see you on other threads. It’s nice to meet another independent thinker such as yourself.

  23. teehee says:

Well maybe some people are actually intelligent and want to discuss Nietzsche.
Some people can be smart but not pretentious; some can be pretentious but not smart– and everything in between… take it with a grain of salt.

  24. carlino altoviti says:

Usually I quote Plato. Shall she like me?
I don’t think she had some surgeon work, but all the pics today are photoshopped.
I remember the young Charlize when she was a model in Milan, she is naturally beautiful, and today she shows all her 36 years.

    • Rhiley says:

I think she looks really beautiful and has aged really well. I do think she looks older than 36, but she is so much better than many of her Hollyhood counterparts like Goopy and Cameron Diaz.

  25. Esmom says:

I love the dress on the InStyle cover but her hair and even her face look a bit too Kim Cattral-esque for my taste.

That Madison cover, however, is amazing.

  26. grayze says:

I do understand the spirit of her remarks, though I know plenty of people who can talk about academic or intellectual stuff without sounding pretentious or snotty about it.

But you know who this makes me think of?

Scarlet Johansson. Because this is EXACTLY the sort of crap it seems like she would pull.

  27. Linny says:

    I don’t know…if she’s only 36 then I’m late for Algebra. I think she looks good but I also think she looks a lot like she’s 42.

It’s interesting that she hates pretentiousness because she has always seemed so pretentious to me. I think she’s a very good actor and I’m sure she’s lovely but the “I keep it real” shtick is a bit over the top.

    • mayamae says:

Linny I agree with you. I’ve never warmed up to Charlize and started disliking her when she stated she did not want to get pregnant because she didn’t want to look like a cow. Charming. I think she’s insecure at her lack of education. I find her greatly pretentious. I understand using a generic accent in acting roles, but she’s the only celebrity I can think of who uses a fake generic accent in interviews. And I absolutely despise her J’Adore commercials!

I like her acting but she is anything but warm. To me she comes off as incredibly shallow and not overly bright. The fact that so many here list her beauty as a reason to like her adds to this. I hope I’m wrong for Jackson’s sake.

Please spare me the attack. It’s only my opinion.

      • mayamae says:

I just wanted to add one more thing. I know it’s unfair, but I’m uncomfortable with a woman raised under apartheid adopting a black child. It’s white South Africans like her that kept apartheid going strong for so long. If she has spoken out against apartheid I apologize. Unfortunately I don’t think she has.

      • 88Modesty88 says:

That’s like saying every white American perpetuated racism, a very silly remark to make.

And yes, I’m a white South African. I never supported apartheid. I’m 38 and I was 18 when Nelson Mandela was released, which was just after the Group Areas Act and other discriminatory laws were repealed.

I don’t know exactly what you expected of me as a child under the apartheid regime — and Charlize is two years younger than I am.

        SMH

  28. Hipocrisy says:

I don’t appreciate any actor who feel the need to publicly bash/criticize their colleagues whatever the motivation, whatever if they use their name or not for expressing themselves in their own way.

I find this classless and to a certain extent unprofessional.

That said, this woman is damn gorgeous.

    • LL2 says:

Good point! It is like they are trying to make themselves look good by pointing out the flaws of others.

  29. Crystal says:

I hate how using big words and being well read is seen as pretention these days. It is sometimes, no doubt, but you really can’t win either way. People on the Internet call kristen Stewart and Ezra Miller pretentious for being well read yet they insult snooki and Beyonce for being basic b*tches with 2nd grade vocabulary. I dont want to have to dumb myself down because y’all are a bunch on simple b*tches (not you guys, just making a general statement). I will never insult anyone’s intelligence but I won’t pretend that I love ‘Fifty Shades of Bad Fanfiction’ just because I’m afraid of being called a snob. F*ck that. James Franco is a mega douche but all that hate he got because… He got an education??? That was ridiculous. Aren’t we the same ones that insult Kim K and Beyonce for not finishing high school ??? If I had to choose between a pretention asshole and a simple b*tch, I’d choose to be pretentious. Yes. I said it.

    • Rhea says:

I don’t think a lot of people don’t like Franco because he got an education. It’s his attitude towards his work, his school and others that got on people nerves.

      • Esmom says:

Agreed. And from what I’ve heard he wasn’t even willing to put in the work for those degrees he is or was pursuing.

      • ZenB!tch says:

As someone with 2/3 of a Masters (code for less educated than Franco) who speaks like a Valley girl and for whom proper English is like Spanish – I understand it but I don’t speak it well….

I JUST CAN’T TAKE FRANCO SERIOUSLY AS AN EDUCATED PERSON.

The reason I don’t like him is that he seems like such a dolt. Kind like Ashton-lite. I don’t get the appeal.

    • bluhare says:

      I’d take the simple bitch.

Pretension tends to come with ego.

    • bns says:

That’s a good point, but Kristen Stewart and Ezra Miller use big words to say dumb shit.

    • sup says:

well you’re not wrong, but i think the only people who get labeled as pretentious are posers like dame poop, brad pitt, sean icky penn and such. and they deserved to be called out on it. many people in hw are pretentious. and unfortunately with them so little is about substance and so much is about image, so resembling a hipster hobo is considered high brow (for them anyway). they’re not really fooling anybody though.

  30. Chatcat says:

I watched The Burning Plain last night…she is so talented and beautiful so if anybody in Hollywood had the right to be pretentious it would be her…seems she is not and I like that she speaks her mind about those who think they walk on water because of their celeb status…I agree with her 100%…everybody, regardless of their profession/job, should do it, do it right, and respect their co-workers…I think we can all agree that is what we want for ourselves.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Was The Burning Plain good, Chatcat? Seems like it got mixed reviews. I love her though. She’s proving herself to be much more than a pretty face, a very talented actress for sure.

  31. Rhiley says:

I hope she is referring to both Franco and Portman, especially Portman, even though Franco makes my skin crawl. He is so greasy looking.

  32. Zambi says:

I don’t think is a veiled comment on anyone. 90% of actors in my experience (working as a crew member) are insufferable ass aches unfortunately. Sure most are nice but that doesn’t mean shit when you’re two hours late to set.

    • grey says:

+ 1 to this. What she’s saying is that she’s there to do a job and when Co-star “B” shows up and is all “I am that character 24/7” and everyone is expected to bow to them b/c they need to them to get their film done, it’s annoying as all hell. Because the rest of the crew isn’t acting and they’re all there earning their paycheques so they can feed their families. They don’t care that you are ‘suffering for your art’. They’re like can you get the shot done so I can go home and be with my family?
I love her for calling out this sh*t. She knows acting isn’t rocket science and she does her job and then gets on with her day.

  33. janie says:

I want her face to be my face, please. She is too unbelievably perfect; it just isn’t fair.

Anyway, I totally agree with her on marriage. I’m only twenty but I’ve been in a relationship for over four years and EVERYONE is asking us when we’ll get married. It seems like people just expect that we’ll take the “next step” after an allotted amount of time, but why change anything when we’re happy the way we are? People rush into marriage too quickly these days, I think because they feel it will either solidify or prove their love. I am fully committed without an expensive ceremony to prove it, thank you very much.

**This isn’t to criticize anyone who’s married; I realize there are many legal benefits. I just feel that a lot of people get married for the wrong reasons.

  34. Ari says:

    Damn she looks good!

  35. Kara Ann says:

Well, I guess she has no no desire to work with Christian Bale!!! He puts the crazy in method acting.

I like Charlize. She’s gorgeous, funny, and doesn’t take herself too seriously.

  36. simple woman says:

I don’t even know who Nietzsche is. I am so not pretentious. *roll eyes*

  37. Day says:

“And I do think it has a lot to do with her mom and dad’s situation.”

    What happened between them?

    • Tiffany says:

@ Day. Charlize father was quite abuse and her mother shot him in self defense when she was quite young. She talked about a few years ago but it is not a frequent topic.

    • Linny says:

I think her dad was abusive and at some point, her mother killed him.

  38. Lila says:

Dude, It has to be Noomi or Viggo. Have you seen the early press stuff
with Noomi so far? HUGE difference between how Theron treats Stewart and Fassbender and Noomi. I know everyone hates KStew, but it isn’t her…Charlize was at a club with her and Pattinson afte thatmpremiere, that is a little much for just PR. Other choice is Viggo…My friend worked on Eastern Promises and said he was a total dick…very method.

  39. Katie says:

Reason #7365 why I love her and always have! She may be considered a bitch among the Hollywood set, but I’d totally be her friend.

  40. barb says:

Lainey over at Laineys Gossip says she is the frostiest bitch to ever walk the earth. Apparently she is completely horrible to everyone. i wonder if that is true. I remember seeing her on Larry King….she never once smiled. weird.

    • original almond says:

I think Lainey is a sell out. She gives me the strong impression that she would rather she were part of the in-crowd instead of writing about it. Many articles she writes have a distinct publicist flavor.

    • AlrightyThen says:

When I watched Theron in person she was VERY off putting. She’s very all about her. At a Q & A following Young Adult she stole the focus from her co-stars continiously. A question would be asked of Patton Oswalt and she’d but in. Prime example of this is during the Oscar round table when Viola Davis spoke about discrimination against dark skinned actresses. Fassbender tried to get the conversation back on track but was of course overruled by both ego maniacs Theron and Clooney.

    • Prim says:

I find it comical that lainey is calling someone frosty when she’s a Gwyneth Paltrow fangirl! People actually take lainey’s word for it when everywhere else Charlize is known to be down to earth? She’s obviously jealous of Charlize because she looks better and has a better career than Gwyneth “GOOP” Paltrow.

    • ZenB!tch says:

I think her accent comes off as frosty. I never liked her as a person until I saw her on Piers.

Ironically, the interview on Piers was the first time she was single. Maybe she’s found herself?

  41. TG says:

Wow, I think I like Charlize more now. I guess I just thought she was a b**ch based on Lainey’s site but the more I think about it and based on her interviews I think this is one confident woman who doesn’t take sh*t from anybody. I remember she gave an interview years ago about breaking into Hollywood and she said a well known director asked her to take off her clothes and she walked out of there. I believe her now. She might be one of the few who are able to command high salaries, make the movies they want and not have to play the childish gaems like be seen at such and such a place, pretend to date so and so, etc. Wish she and Stewart were together he is hot.

  42. DreamyK says:

I actually gasped when I saw her in that bra dress. Wow is she gorgeous.

  43. Mara says:

She is so wright about some celebrity with high demands and so full of themselves ,wow she is so beautiful and sexy.

  44. Jersey Girl says:

She’s absolutely stunning! But I think InStyle should’ve done their cover like Madison’s – she looks like Barbie, lol. But I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at her “pretentious” comment. She’s working in the most pretentious industry. What does she expect?

    • ZenB!tch says:

In Style’s covers are never great. I think it’s their *ahem* style. They are too pastel and poppy.

This may sound “pretentious” but they are very middle America and not fashion looking at all.

In full disclosure, I love expensive accessories and clothes but do not like nor care about the fashion industry at all.

  45. jesstar says:

Now this bitch is fierce! Lol.
I don’t think she’s had any work done, just taken care of her skin. She hasn’t had different noses, same cheeks & jawline, nothing different. I love her attitude. Hell I love anyone in Hollywood who doesn’t feel the need to fake it up for the fans.

  46. Sequined Pajamas says:

What aging ? What changes? She looks as fierce and beautiful as she did ten years ago. She is a gorgeous woman.

  47. Marie says:

For those quoting Lainey’s gossip site I think you’ll find she rates Julia Roberts as Hollywood’s Queen Bitch with Ms. Charlize a close second. I like Charlize better for some reason…more class and less honk…

    • ZenB!tch says:

I can’t stand Julia Roberts for some reason but I can’t bring myself to read Lainey’s site either. I wait for the people here to tell me what she is up to. I find her layout off-putting and her posts somewhat pedantic and verbose. Sorry…)

  48. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

If (I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt) she’s as overwhelmingly mean as I so frequently hear, her Olivier/Hoffman tirade comes of as pretty hollow. IF she’s mean. When did she turn into ‘Tha Greatest Ach-tress Evah’? I’m not saying it with a barbed tongue, I’m just reading these recent threads and throngs of fans seem to suggest it’s happened.

Unrelated: I don’t care what anyone says, she frigging ruined Arrested Development. Not as bad as Julianne Moore on 30 Rock, who was so bad I haven’t been to watch her in anything since (consider your own sanity when you decide to flame me to defend the honour of a woman you’ve never met), but that Mr. F crap drained the blood out of that show.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

From what I’ve seen her in (which admittedly is only 4 or 5 movies) she’s strikes me as very talented. Plus I just like the vibe she gives off. For someone who is incredibly beautiful, she seems to be relatively low-key, more into acting than fame. Haven’t heard the bitch stories though (don’t tell me, it’ll ruin the lovefest!).
Also, I love Julianne Moore but her Boston accent on 30 Rock made me cringe. As a Bostonian, we always say that if you can’t do the accent perfectly then please PLEASE don’t try 🙂

  49. Emma says:

Seems like she’s referring to Kristen Stewart here.

  50. F5 says:

She’s actually incredibly lame, trying too hard to be one of the boys in her interviews.
Nobody makes me cringe more than her.. But she’s gorgeous.

  51. Hanna says:

CT is one awesome lady 😀
But who is she calling out? I would want to think it’s Kristen and something tells me it is…

  52. jover says:

I agree another nina and grayze there’s nothing wrong quoting the classics or shakespeare if you’ve read them and it’s not to rub it in people’s face; she’s a high school dropout, right? Isn’t this a way to cover you’re lack of education – I wonder who her favorite novelists, poets, philosophers, etc, are? Does she even read books, any books?

  53. mandyfan says:

    Dear God, she’s beautiful. Stunning.

  54. sup says:

i don’t like nietzsche, period. it seems only wannabe philosopher young adults with black nail polish like to quote him, when they have hardly read his books and do not quite understand all his points. because if you did, i don’t see why you would like him anyway. btw sadly i have to agree with the previous commenters, charlize tries too hard to be cool. bless her little heart though.

  55. shailee says:

She gets along very well with Kristen, as much as you people don’t want to believe it, serioulsy the hate for Kristen is beyond reson, Charlize could be talking about tons of other people, but of course it has to be Kristen *eye roll*

  56. AlrightyThen says:

Why is she bitching about another person’s craft? Does she realize that she comes off a bit pretentious in this interview?

  57. Nietzsche’s not pretentious. Actors ARE. I used to be one. People who ignore philosophy are missing out on the comfort it can bring among the craziness. STFU Charlize.

  58. ezra says:

Oh, she doesn’t like pretentious shit?
Like famous actors adopting black babies as if they are the latest fashion accessory and parading them around for photo-ops? Hmmmm?

    • alex says:

      amen sista

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

Yes, how dare a white woman (who was born and raised in AFRICA) adopt a baby of color? If she’d adopted a white baby you’d probably still bitch. *eyeroll*

  59. kate says:

ethan hawke ethan hawke ethan hawkeeeeee

    • sup says:

      i agree i agree i agreeeeee
ps: don’t forget uma though, she and her ex were the original hipsters of the b-list

  60. ZenB!tch says:

I don’t find Nietzsche, or Plato or using SAT words properly pretentious. The key word is “properly”. I find verbosity pretentious and hilarious.

I have to agree with her on the Method. Those people who live and breathe their character and “the craft” – hello? it’s not brain surgery.

Has she ever worked with Christian Bale? I have heard a lot of “Method” stories about him – way before the temper tantrums started.

I have heard Fassbender is Method but I haven’t heard anything about his behavior yet. Perhaps because I don’t care enough to pay attention – but thanks to Ms. Theron, I care now.

  61. dahlianoir says:

I LOVE that bitch. I say “bitch” as ” fierce, smart and kick ass woman”. Team Charlize all the way!

  62. Lisa says:

“I need to be around people who understand we’re not curing cancer here. ”

Is she friends with John McVie? She stole his quote about Fleetwood Mac.

  63. Courtney says:

oh please there are plenty of stars in the movie business that aren’t pretentious at all Denzel Washington Tom Hanks ect

    • Teka says:

Leonardo DiCaprio is a great match for her … and I do think they would be a powerful couple … bigger than Brangelina. They’ve been friends for many years.

      • ZenB!tch says:

Leo is Clooney junior. He will *never* see her that way. Her brain is threatening.

  64. j says:

Not sure if this has been mentioned in the comments, but Michael K at Dlisted often mentioned Megan Fox and her Neitzsche loving! She quotes him all the time.. so maybe Charlize is calling her out even though they haven’t worked together. Aren’t they both the faces of major fragrances?

    • Josie says:

I read Megan Fox has Nietzsche and Shakespeare quotes on her back tattoed.

    • kate says:

So if she loves nietzsche, fine. I still don’t understand how that would make her pretentious. I quote my favorite authors. Charlize is a bitch.

  65. Prim says:

I love her no b.s. personality. And people, you can’t take Lainey’s word for everything. She’s been obsessed with dissing Charlize ever since Charlize once ignored her for an interview one time. It was her boyfriend’s film and she wasn’t giving interviews. Get over it lainey. You’re the b-word, not Charlize. You call yourself a fangirl for the most pretentious actor on the planet, Gwyneth Paltrow. Enough said. You’re just jealous.

Also, why does she have to be talking about a particular actor with the pretentious actor rant? She could be speaking generally.

Watching her in interviews, she is hilarious, witty, beautiful, intelligent and doesn’t take herself seriously. I think whoever says she’s an ice queen bases that purely on paparazzi photos where she’s not smiling. That’s silly. Just watch her interviews on the Snow White promotion tour. She is a blast.

  66. LucyOriginal says:

Charlize is beautiful and talented. But she could be talking about Fassbender since he is a method actor. Her joke about his dong was far from funny.

Sometimes, she sounds pretentious too. It’s possible that she got upset she did not know anything about Nietzsche and could not become the center of attention during the convo.

  67. fd says:

    She is smoking hot.

  68. Samantha says:

    The actor…sounds like James Franco.

  69. Medusa II says:

She likes Cormac McCarthy, once quoted saying she read ‘The Road’ long before the movie was made. She must be of certain intellect to be able to appreciate Cormac McCarthy – that’s awesome for someone who didn’t even finish high school. It’s interesting to find out how this woman, with very little education, and yet she carries herself and conducts her life, with the wisdom of an accomplished scholar. On top of all this, she is stunningly beautiful. Whenever I look at this woman, I realize that life is unfair.

  70. JulieM says:

Interesting about Nietzsche. Her best buddy Keanu Reeves likes to read and quote Nietzsche. Maybe she’s telling us that she has no interest in intellectual pursuits, which is fine, BTW. There’s something for everyone.

Let’s not forget the most famous method actor of all working today: Daniel Day Lewis. He’s so intense on the set that he scared off the first young actor who was cast to play the preacher in TWBB. Paul Dano was the second.

  71. Aud says:

I love Charlize. She isn’t a pretend saviour or insecure pseudo intellectual.
I can totally get what she is saying; I hate people who still say ‘paradigm shift’ to sound smart.

  72. Punker says:

She seems very much what-you-see-is-what-you-get. I respect that. Moreover, I like that.

  73. Shaz says:

I usually like her interviews – she’s strong and smart and funny. The face of an angel and the soul of a kick @ss common man

  74. Victoria says:

    Pretentious actor? Um, Joaquin Phoenix.

  75. Jacqui says:

I believe she ment Noomi Rapace when she talked about pretentious, method-actors. sadly, because I simply adore Noomi and think she is the best think that happened to Hollywood, but she takes her job very seriously and prepares extensively for each role. Noomi also gave a hint that they didnt hit it off in her interviews, saying the roles actors play often reflects on their relationships privately.
