Charlize Theron is the cover girl for the June issue of InStyle Magazine (US). She’s also on the cover of the Australian magazine Madison – I’m including the cover image at the end of the post. I really like Charlize’s InStyle cover shoot, for what it’s worth. Charlize has been churning out some really great photo shoots lately, but usually InStyle’s pictorials aren’t this… fierce…? Is that the right word? In any case, Charlize looks gorgeous. As you know, she’s promoting Snow White and the Huntsman AND Prometheus, both out in June. And she has no problems talking about babies and boys and she even comes close to claiming that she hasn’t had any work done – do you believe her? Hm… anyway, here are some highlights from both InStyle and Madison:
On aging: “I don’t feel like I’m aging at all. I don’t think about that stuff. Especially not at 36. I see my face and my body changing, and they’re all changes I’m OK with. Part of me understands I may not be in front of the camera forever, and maybe not just because of age, but because of me. I wouldn’t have started my own production company if I didn’t feel that way.”
Becoming a mom: “So far I’m not surprised by anything about being a mom,” she said. “It’s all pretty great, but that’s what I expected.”
On her single status: “I’m always open to a relationship, but I’m not putting those feelers out there now.”
On having adopted son Jackson: Charlize recalled a letter she’d written when she was 8-years-old. “My mother found [it]. It said, ‘Would you please take me to orphanage, so that I can go and adopt a baby?’ I always knew I would adopt – always… It was never a question that one day I would have a child.”
On what she would do if she could switch careers at her current age: “I would be an amazing butler. I’m very good at organizing a house.”
Being a single mother: “You know, I don’t think any mother aims to be a single mum. I didn’t wish for that, but it happened.”
She’s not looking for a husband: “It’s never been a fantasy of mine. Marriage has never been that important to me. I don’t know why exactly. Some might say it’s because my parents didn’t have a good marriage, but I don’t think so. I treat my relationships like marriages. The ceremony isn’t that important to me,” she adds.
She hates pretentious people: “You know what I can’t stand? I hate actors who come and quote Nietzsche. I don’t like pretentious s**t. I like being around people who like to live life and understand the value of it. I need to be around people who understand we’re not curing cancer here. I like professional actors who show up, do the job and are not a pain in the a** to either myself or the crew. I don’t believe in this idea that if you’re f****d up and Method, that’s the only way to do good work. It’s bulls**t. A professional actor does their homework beforehand and they do their job. Then when it’s all said and done, they have a beer with the crew. That’s what a professional actor does.”

I love her diatribe against pretension. I want to know if she’s directing that at a specific actor. Who has she worked with recently? Michael Fassbender. Uh, no, not pretentious. He probably buys the first round for the crew. Idris Elba? God, I hope not. Noomi Rapace? From what I hear, Noomi’s pretty low-key and sweet. Kristen Stewart? Hmm. Charlize seems to like her. Chris Hemsworth? Doubtful. Damn, I want to know who she’s calling out!!
As for her statement about marriage – I believe her. I don’t think she’s one of those “Oh, I don’t want to get married unless you’ve got an engagement ring YES A MILLION TIMES YES!!!” women. I think Charlize’s marriage apathy is for real. And I do think it has a lot to do with her mom and dad’s situation.

She was SO amazing in Young Adult. I was always indifferent to her before I saw that movie. Now I am a definitive fan.
She was on Piers whatsit earlier this year, he started asking her about aging and she was like “dude, I’m only 36!”
I just loved that movie. I’m the same as you – before that movie, I never paid any attention to her. Now I love her. She was also on an episode of “Top Chef”, and she seemed very down-to-earth.

The way I read it it seemed like it was about Stewart, what with her latest interview taking place in a bookstore and her waxing poetic about this and that book. Plus, she seems like she takes herself and her “craft” entirely too seriously. Also, isn’t she self-proclaimed method?
As for Charlize and her beauty, I don’t think she’s had any work done. But it did seem like her face was a bit puffy at the SWATH premiere. Then again, it might just have been a weird angle.
I highly doubt that was a thinly veiled diss on Kristen Stewart. I saw some coverage of their premiere and Charlize kept goosing her ass and holding hands with her while they walked together. There seems to be a genuine affection there.
Charlize has been in the business a long time, she’s seen a lot of aholes in her time. Stewart hardly rates with the worst of them I”m sure.
Hmm, I thought it might have been K Stew, too, because of her literary-pretentious interview. But maybe not. You are right that Charlize has been in the business for a lot longer than K Stew, too, so I’m sure she’s seen more than her fair share of faux scholars that are way worse than Kristen (who, no doubt, is influenced by Rob, btw).
Maybe it was because of the proximity between the two interviews that I immediately made the connection. But at the same time I can’t think of anyone else who worked with her recently. I certainly can’t picture Idris Elba spewing stale philosophical musings and acting all methody on set.
As for how buddy-buddy they are on the crapet (unintentional spelling error but it stays), I’ll take it with a grain of salt. I always do when it comes to actors. They can’t exactly badmouth their costars. I’ll stick by my initial guess.
Naw. They went out together after the premiere to a club. She doesn’t have to hang with the girl if she was so annoyed with her pretensions. My take is she thinks she’s just some funny kid.
Kristen is annoying and exposes her ignorance often, but I’ll say it again – her offenses are minute in a town like hollywood. Charlize isn’t talking about anyone specifically I bet, more like a general attitude of entitlement and pretension that is simply a feature of industry people.

I don’t know if I”m better informed, I just don’t think CHarlize is “winking” in my direction during a SWATH interview, attempting to make me realize she’s talking about Kristen. That’s a long shot and a half, to promote while trying to imply and undermine the whole point of promoting.
Count me in on the Kristen Stewart guess. I think she’s pretentious as hell, and they are on a promotional tour for the movie so it’s not like you can assume every interaction is real.
I understand the “fun” aspect of trying to decifer who she was talking about…but in reality, she is probably talking about hundreds of actors she has worked with in her many years in the business.
There are a TON of people in the arts who act like that (and there are a ton of people who don’t). I don’t think she was necessarily referencing a specific person.
My guess is she was talking about De Niro. They worked together in “Men of Honor” in 2000, and he is known for method acting.

It’s not Kristen Stewart, in this interview on access hollywood she talks about how she loves Kristen and would jump off a building for her. I know celebrities act like they get along when they’re doing promo but they don’t say things like that if they hate them.

She’s one of my favorite actresses, I don’t get the beyotch comments made about her, I’ve always heard she’s very nice and down to earth on movie sets. I’m happy about her adopting her son and I hope she keeps her baby off the radar and doesn’t use him for promotion like other actors.

Carrie, pretentious is saying things to show how superior you are to everyone else. That’s what she means, not that she doesn’t like cultivated people. Cultivated doesn’t have then negative connotation pretentious does.
I agree with the above poster. I love reading books and I’ve had “high brow” conversations but there is a difference between discussing what you love and using it as a weapon against people or to prove how smart you are. I’ve met those people who quote these obscure authors and when I ask them anything in depth they draw a blank.
That made me think of Mary Bennet: full of quotes and lacking understanding.

I think being pretentious means quoting Nietzsche without having read him. On a side note, I think stewart is the definition of pretentiousness but she probably saves it for interview purposes, to impress us, commoners.
Even in real life, there seems to be a certain animosity between street smarts and over-educated ones. And I think it’s one of those cases.
I don’t mind, say, Franko – he is beyond exceptionally well educated with a PhD from Yale, both of his parents graduated from Stanford, his grandparents are famous surgeants (sp?) and art gallery owners.
Charliz is from a different stock — no education, very troubled family background. It does not make her better or worse than him, they just seem to have a different path. But her path is much more common than his in Hollywood.
@Carrie – she’s not talking about people who are educated/cultivated and express themselves comfortably, she’s talking about the pretentious chest-puffery of people who may (or may not) actually know what they’re speaking about and use certain references (and them big words) specifically to highlight their own grandiosity

I too feel that way about marriage. It’s not for everyone and it’s what you make it. I totally believe in the institution of it, but was never obsessed about it. I was actually surprised that I did get married go the kids route. That was never my goal in life.

I see no lies in this comment. All Hollywood stars like to act they’re so above it all but they’re pretentious to a certain degree. (About Viggo) He could be in the running, but he’s always seemed intellectual but inward to me. I don’t think he would try to intimidate someone with a false pretension. And while I can imagine him wearing his Ranger outfit as much as he could, he did take it off long enough to go surfing with all the guys. They did a lot of surfing during that shoot. Remember when Viggo bruised the whole side of his face on his board and they could only shoot him in profile for about a week?
I’m willing to bet this is Michael Fassbender. Didn’t one of his last interviews have him talking about how serious he is about method acting? And he’s obviously totally into himself. I can definitely see him drinking too much and having a too-loud “profound” conversation with… anybody.
I thought Fassbender as well. I get a weird vibe from watching their interviews together for Promeseus that Charlize was “open” to a little hook-up sitch and Fassbender was, perhaps, less intently interested in whatever she wanted at the level that she wanted. (His girlfriends certainly haven’t equaled her level of togetherness, which makes me think perhaps she’s just “not his type.” Also, while I’m sure he finds her pretty, he doesn’t seem into blondes.) I’m wondering if this isn’t her response to a perceived rejection. There is no way a woman with her looks and personality has substantial experience with guys being less interested in her than she is in them, if that makes sense.
Charlize has been in the industry a long time..I’m thinking Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp and maybe even Al Pacino. All of them are well known as Method Actors..ESP Pacino..just sayin..

But this is the difference between American actors and the rest of the world, pretty much. Every one else just “acts” and most of them are pretty great at it. Just look at all the phenomenal British actors, most of whom act circles around America Method actors. I find that Method actors very rarely do “subtle”. Or maybe that’s just a cultural difference. Hard to tell.
Johnny Depp isn’t a method actor either (he’s the playful type not the serious one) …on your list just Al Pacino is a method actor but for what she has said (in interviews) she loves those three actors…

Wow. On a previous thread, everyone was bashing Kristen for using the “f” word. But when Charlize says it, it sounds like angels singing? What a bunch of hypocritical, pretentious people. Charlize has worked with numerous actors, but because everyone loves to hate KStew, it must be her that CT is talking about *eye roll*.
I think the difference is she only dropped the f bomb once and it made sense in the context. I don’t find Kristen’s swearing annoying, I swear a lot too, but there are times it seems forced and I think if you are sitting down for an interview you have to tone it down.

Theron uses it sparingly, to emphasize her attitude towards a certain idea or thing. Stewart uses it as a universal modifier. Do you see where there might be a linguistic disconnect? As someone said in the other thread, cursing should be used in communicating as spices are in cooking. The last time I dumped a whole jar of curry in my sauce things didn’t end well.

I never felt one way or the other about Charlize until recently when she did all of those skits for Funny or Die. She was hilarious! If you like her at all you should watch her on there.
I love love love her and I’m seeing Snow White mostly for her and Promotheus for looking over all good. She’s so spot on with her talk on pretentious people. It’s one thing to read books and talk about stuff that interests you and another thing to try and sound smart for smart’s sake. I feel the same way about marriage. I’m not running towards it or away from it and most of my relationships have been long term and have felt almost like marriages. Maybe one day I’ll do the whole thing but it will something intimate and private. I just don’t understand having 500 people at your wedding. It’s expensive as hell. It seems more romantic to me to do something small but to each his own.

I remember the young Charlize when she was a model in Milan, she is naturally beautiful, and today she shows all her 36 years.
I think she looks really beautiful and has aged really well. I do think she looks older than 36, but she is so much better than many of her Hollyhood counterparts like Goopy and Cameron Diaz.
I love the dress on the InStyle cover but her hair and even her face look a bit too Kim Cattral-esque for my taste.
That Madison cover, however, is amazing.

Linny I agree with you. I’ve never warmed up to Charlize and started disliking her when she stated she did not want to get pregnant because she didn’t want to look like a cow. Charming. I think she’s insecure at her lack of education. I find her greatly pretentious. I understand using a generic accent in acting roles, but she’s the only celebrity I can think of who uses a fake generic accent in interviews. And I absolutely despise her J’Adore commercials!
I like her acting but she is anything but warm. To me she comes off as incredibly shallow and not overly bright. The fact that so many here list her beauty as a reason to like her adds to this. I hope I’m wrong for Jackson’s sake.

I just wanted to add one more thing. I know it’s unfair, but I’m uncomfortable with a woman raised under apartheid adopting a black child. It’s white South Africans like her that kept apartheid going strong for so long. If she has spoken out against apartheid I apologize. Unfortunately I don’t think she has.

I watched The Burning Plain last night…she is so talented and beautiful so if anybody in Hollywood had the right to be pretentious it would be her…seems she is not and I like that she speaks her mind about those who think they walk on water because of their celeb status…I agree with her 100%…everybody, regardless of their profession/job, should do it, do it right, and respect their co-workers…I think we can all agree that is what we want for ourselves.

I hope she is referring to both Franco and Portman, especially Portman, even though Franco makes my skin crawl. He is so greasy looking.
I don’t think is a veiled comment on anyone. 90% of actors in my experience (working as a crew member) are insufferable ass aches unfortunately. Sure most are nice but that doesn’t mean shit when you’re two hours late to set.

What she’s saying is that she’s there to do a job and when Co-star “B” shows up and is all “I am that character 24/7” and everyone is expected to bow to them b/c they need to them to get their film done, it’s annoying as all hell. Because the rest of the crew isn’t acting and they’re all there earning their paycheques so they can feed their families. They don’t care that you are ‘suffering for your art’. They’re like can you get the shot done so I can go home and be with my family?
I love her for calling out this sh*t. She knows acting isn’t rocket science and she does her job and then gets on with her day.

Anyway, I totally agree with her on marriage. I’m only twenty but I’ve been in a relationship for over four years and EVERYONE is asking us when we’ll get married. It seems like people just expect that we’ll take the “next step” after an allotted amount of time, but why change anything when we’re happy the way we are? People rush into marriage too quickly these days, I think because they feel it will either solidify or prove their love. I am fully committed without an expensive ceremony to prove it, thank you very much.
**This isn’t to criticize anyone who’s married; I realize there are many legal benefits. I just feel that a lot of people get married for the wrong reasons.

@ Day. Charlize father was quite abuse and her mother shot him in self defense when she was quite young. She talked about a few years ago but it is not a frequent topic.

Lainey over at Laineys Gossip says she is the frostiest bitch to ever walk the earth. Apparently she is completely horrible to everyone. i wonder if that is true. I remember seeing her on Larry King….she never once smiled. weird.
I think Lainey is a sell out. She gives me the strong impression that she would rather she were part of the in-crowd instead of writing about it. Many articles she writes have a distinct publicist flavor.
When I watched Theron in person she was VERY off putting. She’s very all about her. At a Q & A following Young Adult she stole the focus from her co-stars continiously. A question would be asked of Patton Oswalt and she’d but in. Prime example of this is during the Oscar round table when Viola Davis spoke about discrimination against dark skinned actresses. Fassbender tried to get the conversation back on track but was of course overruled by both ego maniacs Theron and Clooney.
I find it comical that lainey is calling someone frosty when she’s a Gwyneth Paltrow fangirl! People actually take lainey’s word for it when everywhere else Charlize is known to be down to earth? She’s obviously jealous of Charlize because she looks better and has a better career than Gwyneth “GOOP” Paltrow.

Wow, I think I like Charlize more now. I guess I just thought she was a b**ch based on Lainey’s site but the more I think about it and based on her interviews I think this is one confident woman who doesn’t take sh*t from anybody. I remember she gave an interview years ago about breaking into Hollywood and she said a well known director asked her to take off her clothes and she walked out of there. I believe her now. She might be one of the few who are able to command high salaries, make the movies they want and not have to play the childish gaems like be seen at such and such a place, pretend to date so and so, etc. Wish she and Stewart were together he is hot.

Unrelated: I don’t care what anyone says, she frigging ruined Arrested Development. Not as bad as Julianne Moore on 30 Rock, who was so bad I haven’t been to watch her in anything since (consider your own sanity when you decide to flame me to defend the honour of a woman you’ve never met), but that Mr. F crap drained the blood out of that show.
From what I’ve seen her in (which admittedly is only 4 or 5 movies) she’s strikes me as very talented. Plus I just like the vibe she gives off. For someone who is incredibly beautiful, she seems to be relatively low-key, more into acting than fame. Haven’t heard the bitch stories though (don’t tell me, it’ll ruin the lovefest!).

She must be of certain intellect to be able to appreciate Cormac McCarthy – that’s awesome for someone who didn’t even finish high school. On top of all this, she is stunningly beautiful. Whenever I look at this woman, I realize that life is unfair.

I believe she ment Noomi Rapace when she talked about pretentious, method-actors. sadly, because I simply adore Noomi and think she is the best think that happened to Hollywood, but she takes her job very seriously and prepares extensively for each role. Noomi also gave a hint that they didnt hit it off in her interviews, saying the roles actors play often reflects on their relationships privately.
