Is Joe Manganiello being bitchy about not getting cast in the Superman reboot?

A year and a half ago, there were lots of rumors floating around about the Zack Snyder reboot of Superman, Man of Steel. Lists were made, candidates were discussed and dissected by fanboys and fangirls alike. The list seemed to come down to Henry Cavill, Jon Hamm (??), Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello. Lots of people thought Big Joe had it in the bag – that the modern Superman was going to be a hairy, caveman-esque beefcake, grunting his lines. Considering Superman is pretty dull on a good day, I was fine with the idea of Joe in the role. Unfortunately for him, the role ended up going to Henry Cavill.

I never really heard that much from Joe about losing the role to Cavill… until now. Joe sat down for an interview with Ain’t It Cool News – the piece was supposed to be promoting Magic Mike, but they ended up discussing Superman and comic book movies for a while. You can read the whole piece here. While I understand what Joe is saying IN CONTEXT and I like that he’s being so honest about how much he wanted the part, I also think he’s being incredibly rude about Cavill’s casting, making it sound like Cavill only got the part because he (Joe) had a commitment to True Blood. That’s not all, though. Joe also really wants to play Batman. For real.

Joe on auditioning for the Superman reboot, Man of Steel: “Well, I mean, the thing about Superman was it… I mean, I know the right one is out there for me… there wasn’t anything I could do with Superman. There was interest from every single possible angle on that project, and the reason they were interested was because of TRUE BLOOD. From the director, to casting, to the producers involved, it was all because of TRUE BLOOD, that was why I was in the running. And at the end of the day, it was TRUE BLOOD’s schedule that kept me from doing it. There’s just no human way possible I could be in two places at once when I’m contracted to be on TRUE BLOOD. So it’s the thing that brought me… got me the notice is also the thing that… But with that said, you know, it’s not really a bridesmaids situation, because I play a superhero on TV.”

Joe on the hopes of being called in to audition for an eventual Batman reboot: “From your mouth to God’s ears, man. I mean of course, I grew up, as a kid, I read comic books, and I watched every single comic book movie that ever… You know, I was a big sci-fi fan, I was just that kid. I’m a fanboy at heart. So, yeah, that is on my radar, and I think in the back of my mind, even going getting classical theatre training to the way that I work out at the gym, all of it in the back of my mind has been to build this thing, this career in order to play… To play a superhero the way I would have liked to see it as a kid. And I think that was the really disappointing thing about the Superman situation was that I think that I know comic books really well, and I had a really fresh take on the character and I really think I… I was excited to share a take on where to take him and give him a little more edge.

Joe on Marvel versus DC characters: “The Marvel characters are really human, and I think that they get hurt, and they fall in love and there’s a whole side of that, to those Marvel characters, that I grew up with, to those X-Men characters. I think that’s what resonates. I was interested in taking that approach… There’s a series of comics called Supreme Power where they deconstruct the DC characters and I was looking at those thinking, “That’s the take.” There’s this baby that falls to Earth in a meteor, and why fight for America? Why fight for anything? Why choose them, and not them? How do you save this person’s life knowing that one dies if you save them? How do you make those choices? Feeling alone, being an alien. You know, there’s a whole side of that that I was interested in the human aspect of this alien living on the planet. That’s what really hooked me about the character and, you know, I had a long talk with Zack Snyder about it, and I was really excited. I got really excited about it. But at the end of the day, that wasn’t mine… That just wasn’t meant to be. You know Alcide is where my energy is right now as far as superheroes go. That’s where my energy is being channeled, and past that, I know there will be a superhero for me, I’m just not sure what it is. We’ll figure that out when it comes out… But Batman? Come on, man. Yeah. Okay. We’ll cross that bridge if and when it comes up.”

[Via Ain’t It Cool News]

See? I’m going back and forth on it in my mind. I think he’s showing some vulnerability (however unintentional) by discussing how emotionally involved he was when he thought he was going to get to play Superman, and how that casting choice is still a sore subject. And maybe his version is the truth – maybe Snyder really, really wanted him and they just couldn’t work out the schedule with True Blood. But even if all of that is true, it’s still a bitchy thing to say in an interview, and Joe has just publicly undercut Henry Cavill and now everyone thinks Cavill was the second choice. As for Batman… ugh. I really hope they don’t reboot that, like, next year. I like Batman as a character, but there should be a “rest” period between franchises. CoughSpidermancough.

    woah… as Batman, hell no!

    • becca says:

He wouldn’t be good at either role. Superman is like the boy next door Henry is completely that. Joe’s body is amazing but he has a face only a mother would love, yikes. He comes off like an a$s in the interview!

    • yo momma says:

oh no! Joe insulted Henry, now they must have a fight! a manly fight! in speedo’s! all greased up and slippery, grabbing at each other and falling over each other and….

  2. gee says:

I don’t think he’d make a good superman. And definitely not a good batman. The more he talks, the less I like him.

    • Carolyn says:

Agree. He’s someone who should look good and just not speak. Cavill is divine.

PS. Batman isn’t getting rebooted anytime soon.

  3. Mr. Stinky FishFace says:

Eh, it didn’t come off as bitchy to me. More disappointed than anything.

  4. Joanna says:

i would love to see him naked. no need for him to talk either! just perform ahem

  5. Kaboom says:

I think he was more philosophizing about the fact that he came to attention for the role through True Blood but was also unable to do it because of his “day job” as a catch 22 of sorts.

  6. Jill says:

I honestly hate this dude. I can barely stand looking at his face. He’s like the 12th billed cast member on True Blood and thinks he’s hot s**t. Other cast members have missed out in really huge movies and are always gracious and non-whiny about it

  7. Eve says:

I KNEW Matt Bomer had to have been considered for the part. Now I’m even more suspicious that the reason he wasn’t cast was because he’s openly gay. I hate Hollywood sometimes.

And Kaiser, I could be wrong but I think Nolan has already announced Batman’s reboot for 2015.

    • mayamae says:

Isn’t it strange that a director does a reboot on his own film franchise? How can it be fresh and new?

    • PleaseICU says:

I love Matt Bomer but it was more likely that his contractual commitments with White Collar got in the way of any serious casting negotiations, if he was seriously in the running for the part. I have doubts that Universal/USA would delay White Collar to let one of its actors front a Warner Bros. franchise vehicle.

  8. Laura says:

So his entire goal in life is to play a superhero? No wonder he walks and talks like an idiot. It comes off as kind of pathetic.

  9. chloe says:

I’m over superhero/comic book movies and Joe needs to just be quiet and get on a beach and pose, at least that’s how I like him:)

  10. grabbyhands says:

I used to give this guy the benefit of the doubt in his interviews because it seemed like he was so excited and grateful about his success with True Blood and just wasn’t well spoken in interviews. Now I’m not so sure. But he sure is pretty. He changed my mind about the hotness of bearded men forever.

  11. The Original Mia says:

Ugh. Go away! So tired of hearing him talk himself up. Cavill isn’t up his own butt, which plays well as Clark Kent. I doubt Joe could turn off the smug self-love to do the character. And Batman…chile’ sit down!

  12. reddmasters says:

Joe is def hot; think he should look for some bad guy type roles, maybe a better fit for him than the super hero type.

  13. lucy2 says:

I just don’t seem him having the acting ability to pull off a major role like that – based on what I’ve seen of him so far, anyway.
I seriously doubt TB kept him from being cast in the film – he’s a minor character in a bloated cast, I don’t think he’s on call 24/7 there.

    • chloe says:

I agree with Lucy2 I’m sure if he got offered the role True B would have let him film it, his role is minimal and if he was in Superman it would bring attention to True Blood when he was out promoting, kind of like the free promotion is getting right now from his promotion for Magic Mike. They just didn’t want him and he’s making excuses. Joe is hot, but he’s more of a supporting actor than lead actor type.

  14. Chatcat says:

Kaiser…I have to respectfully disagree with you on your take that Joe disrespected and was rude about Cavill (who I think is a great choice for Superman by the way) in this interview.

Now I am fan of Joe but I couldn’t have drawn from this interview, regardless of who it was (insert any actor name here…even if is somebody who does nothing for me in looks or acting) any diss or rudeness at all. I’ve tried to ignore my personal preference here, have reread this entire thread 3 times, and I still can’t find any direct hit to Cavill…it seemed very, well just generic, about his career at this point and a missed opportunity at something he aspires to do. What one of us hasn’t bemoaned “if only” for ourselves.

  15. Jade says:

I’ve never seen this guy before (only seen S1 of True Blood so far) but I honestly don’t see the appeal. And yes, he sounded arrogant in that interview.

  16. flan says:

Ugh, another reboot. Can they just tell a new tale for once?

Perhaps it’s because Superman is too goody-goody and therefore a bit boring to write for.

Like Cavill though, watch the Tudors if you want to see his behind in full glory 😉

    • Chatcat says:

You are so right flan…Henry has a seriously nice ass…one of the best in the biz IMHO. 🙂

  17. Jenna says:

Ugh. Douche needs to sit down. I’m glad he didn’t get Superman. As for him as Batman? Please, no!

  18. LittleDeadGirl says:

I didn’t see it as bitchy and he actually admitted the only reason they were interested in him was because of True Blood not because he is like some great artist. He didn’t bring up Batman, the interviewer did, what was he supposed to say “no I’m nowhere near as good enough of an actor to play it?”. He just said it’d be awesome cause he grew up on Batman. Who wouldn’t say that? Hell I’d want to be batman and I’m a 5’2 girl.

  19. Jayna says:

He was on the Andy Cohen show. My God, he is gorgeous and sexy. Andy was drooling over him.

  20. Jen34 says:

OMG those airport shots! How can someone look that good while traveling?

I don’t think he was being douchy about the Superman role. They asked and he answered. He could have been evasive or pretended he didn’t want it, but people would have jumped on that.

  21. Issa says:

Batman? GTFO! He’s not a good actor. He doesn’t have the acting chops to even pull off a summer blockbuster. First its the well endowed comment now I was Batman/Superman he’s really full of himself isn’t he?

  22. SFRowGuy says:

Joe don’t complain. Super-hero roles have not always been good for people’s careers. This could be a blessing in disguise.

  23. jesstar says:

Yeah, not seeing the bitchyness in the interview.

  24. telesma says:

Sadly, every time he opens his mouth, it becomes more apparent that he is an epic douchebag. :<

  25. Rose says:

I like Joe Manganiello but can’t see him as Superman or Batman. Maybe if Hugh Jackman gets sick of being Wolverine? JM could pull off an X Men character…I think they might be working on a 300 sequel, that’d be a good fit for him

I understand he’s really bummed but does he have to whine about it?

They need to find the right people to play these superheroes. That’s why Green Lantern bombed–Ryan Reynolds, as much as he’d make a good superhero, wasn’t the right fit. And see how they finally got the Hulk right with Mark Ruffalo. The actor needs to fit the character.

  26. ZenB!tch says:

He’s too old. I say that at 43 and I say that wanting Jon Hamm who is also around 43 in the role when this all started.

That grey beard has to go if he wants to be seriously considered for any role other than Superman’s dad or Albert the butler.

  27. alison8701 says:

I was watching Spider-Man last night (Emma Stone keeps talking about it so I thought I’d see what all the fuss is about!) anyway, Joe plays Flash, Kristen’s douche boyfriend, the one that Peter has that hallway confrontation with… anyway, his face is shaven and he’s younger.. but he is NOT attractive. So I finally get why I feel like I should think he’s attractive, but I just don’t. Because behind the height, muscles, and beard, he’s not cute.

why when i look at him do i instantly think of ‘Hungryman TV Dinners’? lol 😀

  29. Ryan says:

I almost don’t care what kind of douche water comes out of his mouth, I’ll watch him in anything and be thrilled.
