Naomi Watts dreamt Princess Diana gave her premission to do the bio-pic

I’m still not really seeing it. Are you? These are new photos from the new English set of Diana (formally Caught In Flight), the sketchy bio-pic of Princess Diana’s last year. Naomi Watts was cast as Diana, and while I think Naomi is a fine actress, and I think they could have cast this part with many sketchier choices, I still have concerns. Mainly, my concerns are about how low-budget this whole affair looks. If you go back and look at photos of Diana, she often looked very “dated” – very 1980s and almost dowdy (to our modern eyes). But Diana never looked CHEAP. And this production looks cheap. It looks budget and tacky and like everything is being done at the last minute. It looks like no one thought to spring for a really good Diana wig, or to get a hair stylist who was familiar with Diana’s signature styles. Naomi has gone from looking like she had a dilapidated, synthetic rug attached to her head, to this… I can’t even tell if this is a wiglet or if someone just did Naomi’s hair into an abbreviated “Farrah” style.

But, according to Naomi, Diana has given her permission for the role and for the film. Because Diana came to Naomi in a dream! Oh, Naomi. Bad move.

NAOMI Watts’ portrayal of Princess Diana has won the ultimate endorsement, the late royal bestowing her approval upon the Aussie actor in a dream.

“This is a first, but I find myself dreaming about her,” Watts told News Ltd on location outside of London. “I felt like I was spending time with her. One particular time, I felt that permission was granted.”

Watts’ upcoming film, simply called Diana, focuses on the former Princess of Wales life after her divorce from Charles, in particular her romance with Dr Hasnat Khan (played by Lost star Naveen Andrews). Watts, 43, was initially extremely hesitant to take on the role of “one of the most famous, if not the most famous, women of my time”.

“An awful lot of pressure comes with that, so you want to get it right,” she said. “I was dreading people saying `she looks nothing like Diana’, and `why her and not somebody else?’ But I couldn’t not do it.”

Watts’ transformation into the peoples’ princess has involved six weeks’ training with a dialogue coach, repeated viewings of Diana’s infamous interview with Martin Bashir, as well as four wigs and a prosthetic nose piece courtesy of the same make-up artist who years ago turned Meryl Streep into Lindy Chamberlain.

Watts also wears several Jacques Azagury dresses that belonged to Diana, while Versace custom-made a replica of the famous one-shouldered, blue silk dress that Diana wore to a benefit for Dr Victor Chang’s Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney in 1996.

Watts said she felt Dianas presence especially keenly when wearing her original gowns.

“Theres one particular Azagury dress that was completely unaltered. I was surprised how short she wore it, quite risque! There’s been a few eerie moments and that was one of them. There’s been moments of a presence felt.”

Director Oliver Hirschbiegel believes his leading lady has more than captured Diana’s essence.
“Its scary. Sometimes it’s as if you’re watching the ghost of Diana,” he said.

Diana’s children with Prince Charles, William and Harry, do not play a big part in the film, but Watts admits to worrying about how the princes will react.

“Were not trying to destroy any memory. We’re trying to show her in the best possible light as a human being, though, full of different layers. It’s a story that should be told. A piece of history. But its tricky because they are here, the boys. I think about that a lot.”

The royal family’s approval of the production has been implied, however, with permission granted to film outside the gates of Kensington Palace and in Kensington Gardens.

Though Watts is widely considered an Australian, the team behind Diana seem pained to assert they have an Englishwoman playing this most iconic of English women, as though having a colonial in the role would be bad for business. Watts diplomatically offered that her time spent out of the UK (she moved to Australia when she was 14) gives her a good perspective on the Diana story.

“I never wasn’t English. I was born here, I still have a British passport, but I’ve lived in Australia and I have Australian blood in me. Maybe being a little removed is a good thing.”

Diana will continue shooting in London until late August, then wrap with a week in Mozambique in late September. A release date is yet to be confirmed.

Wait, what? They actually use some of Diana’s real clothes? And Naomi has a prosthetic nose? And the confirmation of the wigs. I cannot detect the prosthetic nose at all in these or any photos, which shows that the prosthetic is good, but it still doesn’t make her look anything like Diana. GAH, WIGLET. Maybe it’s just about the wigs.

I don’t see it either. Naomi looks nothing like Diana. Is she really wearing some of her actual clothes unaltered? Because Diana was several inches taller then Naomi and their build is nothing alike. So far all the pictures show cheap clothes that you can’t find Diana ever having worn and jewelry she never had. Maybe they chucked in one or two pieces of Diana’s wardrobe but so far the costume department of this move are exactly as you say Cheap! Lindsay Lohan had better clothes and fake jewelry her bio pic. I think Naomi is going to get raked over the coals for this and as for the dream. Feeling guilty much? I hope the boy’s don’t see this they don’t need to I doubt it’s going to be well written and it already is so miscast.

  2. Aussie girl says:

Cheap comments about a cheap movie she is making.

  3. DailyNightly says:

Diana should have thought twice about this one.

  4. Liv says:

It’s hard to find somebody who resembles Diana’s face. She looked beautiful in a special way and I doubt there’s an actress in Hollywood who looks like her.

But if Naomi gets her body language right, I can imagine her as Diana.

    • LAK says:

She’s not an actress but Jemima Khan has a passing resemblance. It’s probably the poses and mannerisms as they were very close friends So that could be it.

      • TrollyDolly says:

You know there is speculation that they are actually half sisters? Frances Shand Kydd (Diana’s mother) and Sir Jimmy Goldsmith (Jemima’s father) allegedly had an affair. Diana may have been his biological child apparently.

      • Nymeria says:

I’ve read that Diana & Jemima were half-sisters. Diana’s mother allegedly had a brief affair with Sir James Goldsmith, which resulted in Diana. However, it’s nigh impossible to substantiate whether an affair really did occur, given the discretion of the parties who would have been involved. Who knows if it’s true? It’s conspiracy theory stuff. I wonder, though, at the coincidence of Waity’s mother’s maiden name, which, as many of you know, is Goldsmith.

ETA: Apparently, I’m not the first to post this. 🙂

      • LAK says:

@Trollydolly & Nymeria – i was trying very hard not to talk about the speculation especially since the circumstantial evidence could argue either conclusion BUT it’s amazing how much Diana looks like the goldsmith kids ,Jemima and Zac, whilst also managing to look like her sister Jane Fellowes.

    • IzzyB says:

They could at least have found someone with a similar bone structure to build around.

Naomi is lovely, but she looks nothing like her.

  5. Beatrice says:

I’m not seeing Naomi as Diana either. She lookes more like a young Camilla in that first pic.

  6. NM6804 says:

Watts, you’re talented and you work hard. Please don’t stoop to such a low level with giving crappy comments like that.

  7. Rory says:

Diana didn’t have the wrinkles that Watts has. The wigs and clothes are awful! The princess would never have left the house wearing clothing that needed to be ironed. Not to mention that she almost never wore flesh colored tights. She was extremely fastidious about her appearance and personal grooming, her hair was never this messy. Epic fail. 🙁 And then to say Diana told her in a dream to go ahead?? What a load!

    • Sophie says:

I think she did wear flesh coloured tights. Its rather cold in England and most of us where them for work and formal occasions excepting the two weeks of summer we get every year, (p.s. how lucky was that it mostly coincided with the Olympics?)

      • LAK says:

you are both right. She wore a mixture of different coloured tights though rarely flesh coloured.

        She tended to dark/black tights.

  8. rachel says:

    – No, I don’t see the resemblance, although Naomi is an awesome actress and both ladies look(ed) 100% better than weighty Katy!!

-What’s the point of this movie – she died in 1997 and her life and death have been discussed and debated enough.

  9. johnnybadboytapia says:

I dont think she looks like her, but to me thats not a big deal. if the acting is good she can pull it off. everyone was up in arms about MW playing MM because she looked nothing like her, it looked cheap ect. but in the end she did a great job (imo), because she CAN ACT.

  10. TG says:

More proof the celebs are dilusional narcissists. Just like Robert Karashian spoke thru a medium that the divorce was his fault and not Kris Jenner’s. Oh these people and their BS is just too funny.

  11. Choupette says:

Last night my dream was one of hot sex with Karl Urban. *sigh* Why can’t that come true?!?! It was way more interesting than Naomi Watts as Princess Diana. She looks a little old to play the part.

  12. LAK says:

How can she be wearing Diana’s dresses unaltered? Diana was an amazon of a woman. Even at her skinniest, couldn’t be described as petite.

Naomi Watts is petite and small framed.

    • Nymeria says:

“Petite” refers to height (encompassing women 5’3″ or shorter), rather than girth.

Please take no offence at this correction, LAK. I love reading your posts and am often amazed at how well-informed you are about the royal family!

      • LAK says:

@Nymeria – no offence taken at all.

i can see how confusing that would be.

hope you understood that i was trying to say even with the misused terminology 🙂

      • Nymeria says:

I definitely understood what you were trying to say. I, too, was quite curious as to how teeny-tiny Naomi Watts would fit into Diana’s unaltered dresses! I remember reading that after her bulimia receded, Diana was around a US size 6/8. Naomi, IIRC, is a US size 0/2. Perhaps she’ll wear the dress(es) belted?

  13. Shelly says:

I think Naomi in costume does resemble Diana. But my boyfriend thinks I’m blind. I don’t know, I do see a resemblance. *shrugs*

  14. AnnieGrey says:

Looks like a pretty version of Camilla.imo

My dream actress to play Diana is, Keira Knightley. Even the voice inflections, at times are alike.

  15. Ravensdaughter says:

Aaaaaaaaaaggg! First she gets to play her (rancid casting), then Diana comes to her in a dream? No way am I ever seeing THIS biopic.
Diana really was gorgeous. If nothing else confirms that, it’s Naomi’s portrayal of Diana. She’s an a list actress, right? Diana’s skin was absolutely perfect! Naomi’s?

  16. Fue McCormick says:

I think her hair in the first photo looks more like Camilla’s hair …
Plus, I thought this movie was supposed to be about Diana in the months leading up to her death? Didn’t she have much shorter hair at that time? Maybe I’m mistaken …

  17. skuddles says:

Ugh, the hair is driving me bonkers! Never would you see Di with such mussed, fried-looking hair. Not to mention Watts is too old to play Diana. Anytime I read comments about this movie a ton of people state Watts looks more like Camilla than Diana.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Absolutely. Although I don’t see the Camilla resemblance. But the hair, yes. And my gawd, Watts looks 50 years old in that pic where she’s waving. The clothes don’t help.

I do disagree with Kaiser about Diana having looked dated and 80’s. Well, except in the 80’d. I was young but I do remember the 90’s fashion well and that’s just what women wore. She tended to stay on the conservative side while she was still a Royal but that doesn’t equal dated.
The hair and make-up were a bit too much for such a young woman, that’s true.

  18. HME says:

What the f*ck was Naomi thinking when she agreed to this part? Actually I know what she was thinking, she was thinking ‘this part is going to get me an oscar!’ And saying that Diana came to her in dreams and gave her blessing? And then ‘feeling Diana’s presence’?? Ugh. Gross. That’s really low Naomi.

So what’s with this ‘permission’ to film around Kensington palace all about?? Does that seriously mean the royal family gave their blessing to this film? Because I just can’t see William and Harry being okay with a film like this……

And yeah there is no way she’s wearing anything of Diana’s completely ‘unaltered’. NO WAY.

(OMG how OLD does Naomi looks in these shots!!! Yikes.)

  19. tmnt says:

naomi watts has the same “help i’m tortured” feel as diana. (don’t believe me? watch 21 grams).

nose didn’t look fake until you pointed it out. it’s really obvious from the 3/4 profile it’s the tip of the nose.
