Duchess Kate gives her second public speech in Malaysia: improving?

These are even more photos from William and Kate’s Singapore leg of their Grand Asian Tour. These pics are from the “last day” in Singapore, which was… today? Right? Singapore is ahead of us, so these events took place during the day in Singapore. First, Will and Kate visited the Kranji War Memorial, and Kate wore Jenny Packham once again. The Packham is the pale blue dress with a pleated skirt, some sort of fussy embroidery on the top, and buttons! Kate loves her buttons. I actually like this dress, especially for the appearance to a war memorial – it’s sober and respectful, classy and quietly feminine. I’m glad she didn’t do a bold print here.

Last night, Kate did another costume change for an evening reception hosted by the High Commissioner in Singapore. This was a bold printed dress by Erdem, another designer Kate has worn before (notably during her last tour, last year). Another pleated skirt, another appearance with her hair down. I would really like it if Kate made the somewhat old-fashioned delineation between daytime hairstyles and evening hairstyles, between daytime makeup and evening makeup. This is one of her biggest style problems, in my book – her makeup in consistently too heavy and overdone for daytime appearances and her hair in consistently too undone and unpolished for evening appearances.

Also – Kate is drinking water with the toast, so obviously she’s pregnant, right? In which case William must be pregnant too, since he’s toasting with water as well. Could it be that Will and Kate simply don’t want to get hammered and have to battle a hangover in the middle of their tour? Us Weekly had another theory – both Will and Kate are currently taking preventative malaria medication, which should not be mixed with alcohol. Also – after this evening reception, Will and Kate took a break! Of course. They had a date night “private dinner” back at their hotel.

Next stop: Malaysia! Will and Kate are already there. And Kate has given her second public speech!! She gave her first public speech earlier this year, and… well… she’s not going to set the world on fire with her oratory skills. What I’m looking for is consistent improvement, and an ability to give a speech without fiddling with her hair constantly. Here’s her speech:

There is some improvement. She didn’t seem as deathly scared this time, and her voice doesn’t seem as strangled this time – she’s obviously being overly-prepped with elocution lessons in an attempt to give her a posh accent. But she needs to work on memorizing more of her speeches so she won’t have to check the written text four times per sentence. I would suggest this – instead of overly-prepping her with tips about her accent, her handlers need to build her confidence and encourage her to get comfortable with script. And if you think I’m being too harsh… Kate is 30 years old. Enough.

Look at her, looking ecstatically happy at a wine glas filled with water. Surely that’s why she’s so thin. Must. Give. That. A. Try. Sometime.

  2. GoodCapon says:

I lost count of the number of times she looked down at the paper. Sonny from I, Robot could deliver a better speech than her. But this is Waity we’re talking about. Never have high expectations with this girl and you will NEVER be disappointed.

I love her dress though! In some pictures you’d think she has a baby bump, which I think could just be down to poor posture (she likes to thrust her pelvis out) and the silhouette of the dress.

By the way, she pushed a button the other day. Doing that and then this speech, she’d probably demand two months off from work.

    • Amelia says:

I actively cringed when the speech came on the news. Oh, Lordy … at first, I did feel quite bad for her, particularly since her hand was shaking like a leaf at the end.
Buuut then I remembered she’s a 30 year old woman and by the time you hit 30 you should at least be capable enough of speaking in public without having eye seizures and touching your Goddamn hair every ten seconds.
My 15 year old cousin could do a better job.
And when it comes to taking time of work, imagine what happens when they have their heir and a spare – she’ll probably have to check into the Priory for exhaustion because she works SO hard and looking after a child is just an impossible task– oh wait. No it isn’t. Billions of people over the years have done it before, and they will continue to. Suck it up, Waity.

      • chaser says:

Really? My mum is 55 years old and ended up getting professional help to assist her in public speaking.

I’m 29 and often provide speeches to the public for my job. I’m a confident lass but it has taken years to get comfortable. That being said, put me on the world stage like Kate here and I’d crumble. Just because you want to speak, or have to, doesn’t mean you can.

I’m with you Kaiser. I wish they’d let her be herself and relax slowly into it.

    • kelley says:

Maybe if she had written it herself, it would have been easier to commit to memory? Just a thought.

  3. Liv says:

She’s trying hard to be perfect and she nearly is…but I am really sick of her hair. God, just put it in a ponytail from time to time!

  4. berry says:

She sounded nervous to me and her hands were shaking a little, I don’t blame her I can’t do public speaking at all. She was better than last time but im sure people will still pick her apart, I don’t envy her life one bit.

    • P.J. says:

Kate just needs more experience. There’s really no mystery about being a good public speaker; the more you do it, the better you get.

  5. Red Snapper says:

Her accent is beyond tortured. It says a lot about how shallow she is that she thinks it is so important to sound like somebody she is not. She would sound much more sincere if she just used her normal speaking voice rather than that painfully jarring fake accent.

    • Eve says:

      yes!! this x100.

She seems more concerned about enunciating her words in a posh manner than bothering about how she delivers the content. smh.

      • Christina says:

the only positive thing I can say is that her accent isn’t quite as affected as Victoria Beckham’s.

        But that’s not saying much.

    • themummy says:

We don’t actually know if she thinks it’s important at all. I’m sure the Queen no doubt has had her run through all sorts of prep, and elocution lessons are surely part of that–whether she wants them or not.

      • LAK says:

OMG people, stop dragging The Queen into this mess. She’s famously hands off, as her own kids and grandkids have publicly said. She only interferes if one messes up or help is specifically asked. And if we look at her record, said help is limited because she simply expects you to get on with it.

And the little we do know about The Queen is that she loves genuine people, not people who put on posh accents and airs and graces.

As both Charles and Anne have said, and we keep saying, this isn’t a job you train for, you simply do in order to get better. Kate doesn’t do nor does she do enough, so she never gets better.

      • Allie May says:

        @themummy:
Very true. She is being trained whether she likes it or not. It’s not the Queen, however, as I believe she is also informed of what she needs to say or do. I believe Diana called them the “suits” that run the Royal Family, and they are probably on Kate’s butt with every little thing she does wrong.
I thought she did quite well with the speech, and I like her.
I have no doubt Kate will improve in time because she will have no choice.

    • Magsy says:

I guess it’s still important in England for the upper crusties to sound upper crusty no matter how down to earth they try to appear and modern. One is measured by how one speaks.

  6. Kaye says:

I know this is a gossip site and I know part of the name is “bitchy,” but I wish folks would just cut this woman a break occasionally.

    • themummy says:

I could not agree more. I know when there is a Duchess Kate post it will be filled with vitriol and/or extreme nitpickiness. It’s like everyone is an expert on how to live as a royal, how to dress, how to do hair, how to speak, how to speak publicly, how to do public engagements, how many public engagements to do, and so on. And yet, not a single person here (or anywhere) actually knows a single thing about how she thinks, what she likes, or how she lives.

And honestly, who cares if she likes buttons? So what. Is that really worth a mention every time she puts on clothes?

      • RobN says:

It’s no weirder than referring to every quiet moment she spends with her husband as a vacation. Oh wait, that’s weird, too.

      • bluhare says:

You aren’t interested in Kate, that’s fine. We get it. Those of us who are like to comment.

I’m not interested in Jennifer Aniston, Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, yada yada yada, yet I don’t get on their threads telling people who are interested that they shouldn’t be.

    • Kristin says:

      Agree

    • Heebeegeebee says:

Well, I like her very much. They make a lovely couple.

    • Sachi says:

      She’s a public figure.

If politicians and other celebrities don’t get a break, why should the royals?

Trying to shoot down criticisms of Kate and the other royals is like infringing on free speech. Not only on this site, but the whole principle.

We’re not harming Kate. Nobody’s wishing ill or harm on her or her family.

I doubt she cries into her shopping bag full of Jenny Packham clothes every time she thinks about people on Celebitchy not liking her. Or that she feels sad because people on the internet are mean to her.

Criticisms of her are just as valid as those adoring and praising everything she does. Why is it always the “haters” who get told to shut up and leave Kate alone? Why are the “haters” always replied to with sarcastic remarks about getting a life and being jealous?

Are the only “good” comments those that praise her all the time?

      • Esti says:

This is my personal pet peeve, but: no, people saying they don’t like criticism of Kate is not “like infringing on free speech.” Free speech means that the government can’t stop you from saying things, not that private citizens shouldn’t disagree with what you say.

People get to criticize Kate (or whoever), and then other people get to criticize the criticism of Kate, and as long as the government never steps in then “free speech” really doesn’t have anything to do with it.

      • soapfish says:

Esti — THANK YOU! No one has common sense any more. It is hilariously ignorant to conflate government-mandated restrictions on speech with someone else speaking up to say they don’t agree. And yet it’s becoming more and more common. I despair for the state of education in this country.

Count me in as one who doesn’t get the constant ragging on Kate – the hair, the buttons, etc. When there are serious lunatics on the road (heyo, Amanda Bynes ) and plenty of other truly outrageous crack shenigans to cover, I just can’t get worked up over the microscopic nitpicking of this lovely woman.

      • Kate (newer one) says:

In fairness, Sachi, it isn’t only the “haters”. The “sycophants” get it in the neck just as much from the other side. Plenty of comments on how facile and empty/stupid they are. (And I hate to say it, but a French gossip mag are claiming they have topless photos of her on holiday with William. So both sides are about to square off, big time. Crash hats at the ready….)

Less controversially, her clothes on this tour are *weird*. It’s like a 1970s designer trying to do a take on the 1940s. All the boxy bodices, sweetheart necklines and pleats, together with manically swirling florals and chiffons.

I do like her, but I don’t like her clothes. I don’t get the whole fashion icon thing.

    • Another K says:

I absolutely agree Kaye. A little bitchy thrown in with the gossip is fun, but to just tear someone to pieces every time they take a breath is sad. I think Kate is trying her best and is certainly making some mistakes but I also think she is under many restrictions and requirements that we are unaware of. I like to read this site because of the variety of commenters but sometimes it does get kind of annoying. Like Kate, I also have a terrible habit of touching my hair too much and, although I feel I do many things reasonably well, I certainly have not ever gotten used to public speaking and my hands shake embarassingly every time I do. We should just ease off a bit on Kate; bitch but not snark.

    • suz says:

Comments on an Internet blog are something you can’t control. There are many pro-royal sites around where you will find lots of complimentary Kate commentary. For example Tom and Lorenzo’s fashion blog has lots of Kate fans.

I don’t read the Aniston posts on this site because I’m a fan and I find most of those comment threads unpleasant. But you aren’t going to change people by telling them to post differently.

      • Another K says:

Hi Suz, The situation for me is that I can’t stop reading Celebitchy’s articles on the British royals! There are so many intelligent commentors on the royal threads here. I don’t need nor do I want to just read the “nice” comments about Kate. I don’t like or respect everything Kate does or any of the royal family, for that matter. But it is much more interesting to read an informed opinion rather than a “wake up in the morning, time to write my daily diss about Duchess Kate” rant. I want to hear the negatives as well as the positives but not silly novel length horror stories based on incredibly unreliable source.

There is a commentor on this site called LAK whose opinions I usually do not agree with but she seems so well informed and presents her case in such a way that she always gives me something to think about and I respect and appreciate that. [I should say he or she, but whoever LAK is, I like reading his/her comments] That’s the kind of back and forth I like.

Very embarassing to admit that I do check in with a gossip site every so often during the day! I would never admit it to my friends! Well, I guess it’s a way to relax.

      • Suz says:

Ha! I am addicted to Celebitchy too! Let’s be embarassed together.

I guess we could both skip over the posts that get crazy overheated.

There is some excellent commentary here. Lots of it.

  7. Eve says:

Sorry I’m still not impressed. While she didn’t look as visibly nervous as the previous time she spoke, she still refers to the paper after saying a few words… i totally lost count of the number of times she did that. does she know how distracting it is for the audience that she keeps referring to the paper?

A public speaker should never entirely rely on the script – word for word. It should just be used as a guide. That constant looking up and looking down means that she can hardly personally connect with any member of the audience – she doesn’t look up long enough maintain eye contact with any one person. Hence the lack of connection with the crowd. The speech should have been memorized so she can engage better.

In addition, she lacks any sort of emphasis or emotion. Certain words could have emphasized on to bring out its importance and a little bit more emotion would have helped the connection with the crowd. She also has a habit of breaking up sentences at the weirdest places. Speaking slowly might have helped more too.

Last but not least, the hair! tie it up! there seems to be a wind there and the hair is just distracting, covering her entire face. zzz

Sorry i got too carried away – used to be a public speaker. I’m surprised the palace don’t advice her on simple things like this? =/

    • The Original Mia says:

I agree. She should be better at this & have her speech memorized, especially for what little substance actually went into the speech. It was a 5 minute speech. Goodness, school children have to give oral reports that are longer. But the standard for her is set so low, all of her stans will cheer her accomplishment. Whatever. She needs to take this job as seriously as she took the job of acquiring her husband.

  8. pretty says:

what is that umbrella thingy that she is holding?
    Isn’t that a Japanese thing?
    I mean.. ??

    • L says:

the parasol? From my understanding its a pretty popular accessory in the Far East on sunny days. I saw them all the time in Korea and Vietnam when I was there, so I don’t think they are limited to one country.

      Could be wrong though.

    • daisydoodle says:

because it’s hotter than the gates of hell and it keeps the sun off of you….

    • Another K says:

I was born and raised and still reside in Southern California and as goofy and dorky as parasols look – and believe me, when I was younger I swore I would never do, as I thought of it, the pathetic old lady parasol thing – I magically got older and surprise! Now I keep a paper umbrella in my car at all times to shade the sun from my face if need be.

  9. Gossip PHD says:

Any opinion that she might be a tiny bit knocked up? She looks fuller to me. (last years photos had her at beyond emaciated, now she looks just “too thin”)

    • ahoyhoy says:

Yup. i noticed her face suddenly filled out, around the start of the Olympics. Now she looks like she’s gained weight.

Still scrawny, but that little bit of weight gain is OBVIOUS. So yeah, I think she’s knocked up.
She looks better when she’s not so frail! I hope she never gets that thin again.

      • Magsy says:

I wonder if she smokes too, kinda looks like a smoker. You can see her waistband rides up in some pic, or she’s already putting her hand on her stomach.I kinda dread hearing blow by blow baby stuff for the next 7 months.

    • Kat says:

I’m thinking yes. There are a couple of pictures where she’s clasping her hands in front of her, and you can see the tiniest little belly–which I’m assuming is fully of baby, as she’s been painfully thin this last year.

    • Len says:

And she has been drinkIng water. So has Will, but I think he is doing it in solidarity, so the press won’t start talking.

  10. L says:

She also went to a hospice for kids today (where the speech was) after the war memorial. She wore the same outfit, and I agree it was a nice beautiful piece that worked for both places.

As for the public speaking, look my dad is 50 years old. And his hands shake like that, he looks down at papers, and is generally a nervous public speaker. And he also has to do it as part of his job so there are also high expectations. He’s told me he’s gotten better than when he was in his 30’s, but really-regardless of profession some people just aren’t public speakers.

As for the water-they’ve been out most of the day in 90+ degree weather. Pretty much nonstop since a 14 hour flight. I’d be drinking water to.

    • tmbg says:

Public speaking is pure hell! I give anyone credit who can get up there and do a reasonably good job. My hands shook so hard when I had to do it that I’m surprised my papers didn’t fly all over the place. Add in the bored looks of my classmates and it’s a wonder I didn’t have a heart attack.

  11. Tiffany says:

That dress in the header pic really does not do her any favors because she has a short torso. If you got the money, find some help so you can style properly to your body type. I wish like hell I can do that.

  12. Talie says:

She’d be better if they just did some bullet points and let her riff. It comes more naturally and smoothly…I don’t know, in America we do a lot of presentations in high school and college. Not sure if Kate experienced that enough.

  13. tmbg says:

She did a hell of a lot better than I ever could. In my public speaking class in college, I spoke in a monotone and someone said I’d make a good senator or something. It wasn’t a compliment.

Anyhoo, I don’t really understand what’s exciting about palliative care. It’s good that it’s now available, but exciting to watch a child die slowly? No, I don’t think so.

I do wish she’d be allowed to dress like she did in her 20s. She looked so much fresher and less grannyish. She’s only 30 and all of these dresses scream school teacher. It’s not her fault though. Maybe things will change eventually when William is King. Something tells me these are the old guard’s rules.

  14. ladybert62 says:

Since I am at work I could not listen to the speech but I did watch part of it. Her looking at the written speech on the paper was annoying – thus, we learn the value of teleprompters!

She needs a good haircut. Her hair is beautiful but too long – get a good cut about shoulder length or as someone suggested, wear a pony tail!

I am not a fan of prints on dresses, but it is not too bold and she is outside so it seems ok.

Why the little umbrella? Is that a sun umbrella?

  15. andy says:

i would guess that she is pregnant. looking at those pictures from today there is a “bigger” tummy. she was always flat- but now you can obviously see a bit sticking out.

    • Christina says:

Either she’s preggers or going through some pre-menstrual bloating.

It’s the tiniest little bump – you wouldn’t even notice it on any other woman – but on someone as skinny as Kate it’s fairly obvious.

    • Lacie says:

Dude, she probably just had a big lunch. They can’t give anti malaria medication to preggos.

    • Kate (newer one) says:

Sorry to be crude, but flying long haul followed by short hops can make your stomach swell, too. All the changes in air pressure. (Drinking’s a bad idea with serious jet lag, too, so the water may be down to that, too.)

Given how horrible early pregnancy is for a lot of people, I can’t believe they’d risk that for a foreign tour. And wasn’t she drinking at the Olympics last month?

  16. Bones says:

William looks really stellar in that blue suit. Damn. Diana’s boys both have the number of a good tailor, and the figures to carry off any sort of menswear, but that suit is particularly impressive. The color, the cut, the sheen, the French cuffs peaking perfectly from the sleeves. It’s really a glorious piece of design.

Kate looks pregnant to me. I know, I know, we’re not supposed to say that, so sue me… I’m sayin’ it. Her face is noticeably fuller, and in the blue Jenny Packham her belly has a tell-tale little buldge in the lower abdomen where once there was none. She’s in the early stages, no doubt about it. When a woman is as thin and angular as Kate its very difficult to hide those changes, even early on.

  17. Sachi says:

Except for that hair and looking down at her papers every other 2-3 words, she’s improved.

She’s still not good, though. And it’s sad a 30-year old doesn’t seem to be making leaps and bounds in public speaking when this is what she will be doing most of her life. I doubt her day is full of laborious tasks that keep her so tired and busy, so 6-months in between speeches and still little to show for it is not really that impressive.

But this was a bit better than the last time.

Her accent is terrible. She sounds so nasally trying to enunciate and it almost gives her voice a squeaky, whiny quality.

She needs to emphasize her words and practice her sincerity and facial expressions. She looks like she doesn’t feel what she is saying, like she has no conviction about the issue she’s discussing.

She has to do something about her appearing vacant most of the time. Her bearing/posture isn’t poised and intelligent enough. Kinda hard to take someone seriously when they speak in a small, soft voice and keeps looking down at the papers instead of talking directly to the audience and making them feel the gravity of the speech. That’s what public speaking is about: you reach out to the audience and you make them feel what you feel.

If all they can feel is that you have nice hair and “Oh it must be so hard for her! Public speaking is hell for me, too! She’s doing great!” then something is wrong. They’re feeling sympathy for you, not sympathizing on your words.

I love her dress, though. 😀

  18. Reece says:

“There is some improvement. She didn’t seem as deathly scared this time, and her voice doesn’t seem as strangled this time – she’s obviously being overly-prepped with elocution lessons in an attempt to give her a posh accent. I would suggest this – instead of overly-prepping her with tips about her accent, her handlers need to build her confidence and encourage her to get comfortable with script.”

    My thoughts exactly.

I’m not going to comment on the dress but the designer. I don’t get it. There’s nothing to their designs. It’s the same type, same cut every time! Even Marchesa you see where there is some Try. It usually fails miserably but there’s some Design Try. JP’s dresses all look like baggy house dresses…with pleats. If you are just tooling around running errands for the day this is what you’d wear, if you happen to prefer dresses over pants. I don’t get the appeal.

  19. KellyinSeattle says:

They completely remind me of the people in “The Prisoner” series….anyone remember that w/ Patrick MacGoohan? It was set in England and the people in the closed community were like walking zombies..

  20. June says:

i can’t understand, why is the waist of her dresses always that high? she has a long torso and it just looks weird, when the waist is on her ribs.

    • Alti says:

a high belt + high heels make legs look longer and the torso looks shorter = Kates style!
One reason why her dresses always look the same.

      • June says:

i see, but doesn’t she understand it or does she have no eyes?

      • GoodCapon says:

        What doesn’t Kate understand, June?

      • June says:

to GoodCapon: that it looks weird when she wears dresses and the waist of the dress is situated on her ribs. please compare her former outfits to the temperley one from today. you will see the difference.

      • GoodCapon says:

June, I’ve seen the pictures and I actually think the cut is better, no?

I think she knows it looks weird, but she doesn’t have a lot of options given her body type.

  21. Seagulls says:

Regarding the buttons: if I remember correctly from one of my awesome Princess Diana style books circa 1991, the Royals dig buttons because they add detail without being fussy, useless gewgaws. Which doesn’t explain her sausage curls.

  22. Esti says:

I *love* this Jenny Packham. It’s a bit 1950s retro but not enough to be costume-y, the color is great, and it’s really flattering on her (and would be on most body types, I think).

  23. Lacie says:

    *Sophia Vergara voice*

    That second dress es HEEDEOUS.

Nobutreally. My uncle had a couch like that in the early nineties.

  24. Kate says:

The water is probably because they were toasting the Queen. It is usual to toast her with water.

  25. Cazzie says:

I often like the dresses KM chooses, and it is clear that she puts a lot of thought into making sure what she wears is appropriate to the occasion. So, she is doing her job.

But…why do her outfits never seem to fit? They always look wrong on her somehow. Some people above pointed out that Kate’s proportions are the opposite of ‘fashion’, so maybe that is why all those incredibly expensive garments hang badly on her figure. (That Stella McCartney dress was the worst.)

Can’t she get them tailored? The only thing that seems to have been altered to fit her was the teal chiffon gown, and she looked fabulous in that.

You would think she’d look at the photos of herself and at some point make a mental note: “Finish shopping two weeks before event date to allow for tailoring.” That’s all it would take, and the clothes would look so much more flattering. Right now they do not flatter her.

    • caitlin says:

Since the weightloss may be “distracting”, she has to dress strategically so there is less scrutiny and focus on her body.

Lots of flowy fabrics, pleats and padded bras go a long way in making someone look heavier (or in her case, normal) and concel protruding bones.

  26. June says:

for sure she is not cicero. and it could be hardly called as a speech, imo. how long is it? a minute or two? she didn’t have to share any knowledge or to recount anything. it was just like: “hey, people! nice to be in your beautiful country and bla bla bla…” you would expect a 30 years old college graduated woman not to look down at her paper while saying this. but to speak free and be sincere. but… there is no sincerity or interest in her eyes… never! no matter is she visiting diseased children or a tea shop.

  27. angelic 20 says:

1 min and 59 sec long speech and she looked down 43 times and no I did not count it personally, it is posted on a royal blog. I have nothing to say to those who thinks that this is good for a30 years old collage graduate woman and I am not even counting how many times she touched her hairs. It was better then last time but that is not saying much.

  28. Mrs.Krabapple says:

She dresses like my grandmother. She has no sense of style because she has no identity.

And I suspect she looks down at the script so many times because she’s deathly afraid of getting her handlers mad. They must know she’s a simpleton, and can’t trust her to speak on her own. So they drill it into her head “Do not stray from the script. DO NOT STRAY FROM THE SCRIPT!” So now she’s too afraid she might stray from the script.

Now that I think about it, she would make a perfect wife for Tom Cruise. She never has any thoughts of her own, or friends of her own, or interests of her own. She’ll (fake) tan, get veneers, spend hours styling her hair, starve herself, change her accent, parrot speeches other people wrote for her, and give up her own identity to keep a husband. Perfect scientology bride material.

  29. Brenda C. says:

My gripe with her is that she lacks sincerity and warmth. It comes through in everything that she does. I understand she is a new royal but she was also dating William for a considerable number of years and had time to acclimate to the media attention. If she lost the posh accent and focused less on being perfect and more on being her true self people would still love her and cheer her on. I can’t help but cringe when she speaks or when she smiles a Cheshire grin; it’s so fake.

In time people will stop making excuses for her but I also suspect she’ll ‘hide’ from the public when the heir and the spare are born. I just have a hard time imagining her as a Queen Consort. Right now she isn’t showing any indication that she will be suitable in that position.

    • BeccaZ says:

I think the only thing she learned during those Waity Years was to smile, smile, smile at the cameras. That’s all she does now too.

Kate has some pretty big shoes to fill when you think about the last two Queen Consorts, the Queen Mum and Queen Mary. Those were two tough, smart and charismatic women. And neither one of them had Kate’s education or opportunities.

      • LAK says:

Those ladies are gold to her base metal as far as doing the best thing for situation and husband wobbles.

If William had married a similar lady, he wouldn’t be hiding out in the military. She’d have pushed him to suck it up.

Waity simply indulges his worst traits whilst mirroring them in many ways. If William was training/preparing, so would she.

I don’t even want to think about what she would be like in a crisis. Her biggest crisis was losing William, and she reacted by turning herself into a media famewhore who dropped the one charitable character building endevour the minute he called her back.

  30. Zimmer says:

Her evening dress reminds me of the one Julie Andrews wore for the ball in the Sound of Music.

Enough with the hair. What’s the point of spending so much on a stylist if she always wears it the same way? I get the feeling William demands that she wear it down b/c he likes it that way!

  31. stephanie says:

    she’s pregnant. the end.

    • Alexandra Bananarama says:

She’s not pregnant. It is more likely pms bloat or she hasn’t had a chance to go to the bathroom.

She does look like she’s on fertility boosting hormones.

IF she was pregnant she wouldn’t lift a finger. I’m guessing once will gets his heir and a spare they’ll stay together another few years and divorce.

I bet she knows this is a job and once she out lives her usefulness she’ll be fired.

  32. Hmmm says:

I only read the text. It was a canned speech, devoid of anything engaging or personal. She read what the PR team wrote. Glib and as bland and indifferent as the Waitybot.

  33. yo mama says:

Why does she sound so nasal, particularly when pronouncing ‘i’s? It makes me cringe.

  34. mena says:

Yikes that was bad. What I don’t get is, wasn’t Kate tutored to do this?

IIRC, after W&K announced their engagement, their PR machine spewed out all this talk about how Kate was being privately tutored to be a Princess. How she was getting all the training & support that she needed. How she wasn’t going to be left to figure it out on her own, like Diana was. That was almost two years ago and W&K’s PR machine repeated the same spiel again after their wedding.

After all that time & training, this is a very disappointing result.

That reality show “Ladette to Lady” turns out better prepared “Ladies” than this and they only need a few weeks.

  35. BeccaZ says:

Sachi, I agree with you (except about the dress…sorry!).

She has improved, which is great, but I think its time to really start shoving her out in the public. I don’t care if she’s pregnant or not. She can still smile for cameras and throw fabric off of plaques if she’s pregnant.

Listening to her, my biggest thought was, “Who really wrote this speech?” It was so generic and blah. What was the point, really? The only thing I remembered from it was her saying she was a patron at a UK hospice. Well, great! Talk about THAT then. Oh, wait. She would actually have to show up on a regular basis for her to know anything. She just comes across as so blank and so uncaring, and I definitely agree that the result of the speech was more about how Kate did than what was in the speech, which is such a shame. We really should have listened to that speech and known that it was about a hospice and not about how many times she touched her hair. So, it was still a Fail.

    • charlie says:

Uh, what was the speech about? It’s so true — I missed all the content, shallow that it was. I read it afterward in a transcript. What a lot of nonsense. How often has Waity shown up at her EACH patronage — once before?

  36. Aurelia says:

Oh yes Mrs.Krabapple , your are right. Kate would be an ideal stepford wife for tommie girl and his cult. Ha ha ha.

Doubt waity is preggers. Those who said as soon as she was prggers she would be taking 9 months off are right. Like those chicks who leave work to go on maternity leave at 6 months along.

Anyhoo, willie middleton and waity reek of laziness and disinterest. The courtiers at the palace are ultra scared of these 2 and their lack of committment. William apparently threatens to opt out of monarchy when it becomes his turn and the courtiers freak because thier livelihoods depend on the continuation.

Kate looks shit because she doesn’t have a stylist and takes advice from no one. Obviously thinks she knows what she is doing. She is waaaaay out of her league. She can’t even leave her tarty shory dresses alone to get out of a car or sit on a chair without letting us see what she had for breakfast. No home training.

God, Diana was a kid and was thrown in without a supportive husband and she was amazing. I guess you can’t buy breeding. Least she never wore thong undies with billowy dresses and threatend to show us her cooch. Ger a clue waity.

Think she looks less emaciated / bobble headed because she is finally realising starving herself made her periods stop.

    Nuff said.

And one last thing, waity has not had elocution lessons. Sadly that is how she has always talked. I guess because she went to one of the U.K’s finest secondary schools she felt she should ape her peers and adopt a fake affectations. Bet mumma midds from the council estate (projects in the U.S) doesn’t talk like that. Oh no whait, its her who has taken elocution lessons to hide her background. How can we expect waity to be genuine? Fake, fake, fake.

    Nuff said.

  38. Jaynizzle says:

If some of you do the research, The Queen, Princess Anne, Prince Charles, and so many of the other royals read off of papers. Go watch a few videos on YouTube. And don’t forget her husband too. People want too much from this woman and its sad. I guess because her life has been so easy (had money growing up and now even more money) that people feel the need to make her life hard with criticism. If I had a choice right now between being a pampered prince’s wife or being unemployed, I’d take being a pampered prince’s wife and I wouldn’t give a darn what people said. I’d read the paper the entire time and not look up. Please go watch videos of The Queen on YouTube.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

The Queen, Princess Anne, and Prince Charles all have MUCH busier work schedules than Waity. Princess Anne does something like 500 royal engagements a year. How many does Waity do, five? Six?

There is no excuse for Waity’s horrible speech delivery. Given how little she actually works, she has all the time in the world to practice. But no, she’d rather spend 4 hours having her hair done than practice a speech.

The only excuse I can think of is what I posted above: because she is incapable of stringing a coherent thought together on her own, the royal handlers have ordered her to NOT STRAY FROM THE SCRIPT or else. And she’s too afraid to lose her position as William’s arm candy to risk getting a single word wrong, hence the constantly looking down at the paper.

Unlike the Queen or Princess Anne, Waity has lots of free time to study her speeches. She’s just too lazy to do it.

      • JulieM says:

Yes, Mrs.K- Exactly. The excuses for Duchess Dollycurls are getting more creative. Yes, The Queen, etc. do read their speeches, but the trick is to not look like you are reading it verbatim. That would mean that Waity would actually have to be familiar with the content of, what, the 2 minutes, written for her. That is why she looks in way over her head. A little effort would pay off for her.

  39. ruby says:

I agree with people above : tiny little belly there, fuller face… Maybe Kate has managed it after all.

Also, I could have done a better job at that speech, and that’s saying something, since I’m “in recovery” for being cripplingly shy and having absolutely zero self confidence. And seriously, one of the first things you learn to make speeches is not to read ! that “head going down redaing and looking up again” motion is so annoying, as is the starting and stopping rythm. Learn what works best for you : either learn your speech off by heart, or (I’m better at this) know your subject, write your own speech (with help if you need it) and then only jot down key points and reminders. Never full sentences. Then you have to build the speech as you go and it sounds natural and engaging to your audience. Of course, you have to have a fairly good spoken language level to pull that off.

  41. Jaded says:

She is utterly without personality. Dry as day old toast, absolutely no charisma or “contact” with people.

I really don’t think she’s cut out to be a public figure and it shows with her stiff mannerisms, overly controlled speaking manner and hair-fiddling. She may be just vapid and boring, I don’t know, but there’s no “substance” there.

Say what you will about Diana, but she was a much more compelling speaker once she got her feet wet, and didn’t have to hide behind her hair. She had a big personality and a warm touch with people that Kate will never have.

  42. Meg says:

Is it just me or does Willy’s hair look a bit fuller? Perhaps it’s because they are outside…

  43. Mandy says:

Is it just me or is that last dress TOTALLY 80’s!?! Horrid.

    • charlie says:

It’s not just you, Mandy. I loathe that style. It looks so 80s and grannyish. And this is Waity’s fourth or fifth dress in that style, just a different colour. The others were:

      1. The yellow fiasco in Calgary with her bare butt hanging out.
      2. The printed disaster she inappropriately wore to some garden/polo match last spring, with wedges and the puppy in tow.
      3. The turquoise thing with the peace signs all over it.

I’m sure there are others — the bright pink Stella McCartney number? They’re all fugly as can be and thirty years too old for Waity.

  44. benny says:

Ok, I’m old. But since comparisons to Diana are common, I’ll throw mine in. Back in the early 1990’s or so, when Diana was in her early thirties, she was having marital difficulties, as we all know, and wasn’t getting along with the royal family.

Yet she did an official visit to Japan, alone, with nobody there as her “crutch” the way Kate has William. Diana took a 4-week crash course in Japanese so that when she gave her official speech, she could at least begin it in Japanese. The Japanese crowd loved her for it. Then she visited a hospital for disabled children. She was so engaging that one little girl clung to her and wouldn’t let go. Did Diana really care, or only pretended to care? Does it matter? She at least convinced people she cared, whether she really did or not. Because she put the EFFORT into it.

Those little things make a big difference in public relations. And really, isn’t that the sole job that Kate has, public relations? Kate isn’t any good at it, because she just doesn’t care enough to put any effort into it (other than her hair and makeup, which she put tremendous effort into). She can’t even PRETEND to care. To me, she’s really turned out to be a dud.

  45. benny says:

Michelle Obama recently wore a brocade-jacket-looking top with a pleated skirt:http://fashiondelegate.com/wordpress/?p=6698

Yet, despite being nearly 20 years older than Kate, Michelle seems much more fashionable. Kate always looks old, as if she raided Barbara Bush’s closet.

  46. charlie says:

Would people stop coming to Waity’s defense over that very poor speech? Poor delicate snowflake, she’s nervous, who wouldn’t be? I’m really sick of it. This is her JOB, people! She’s had six months to practice a three-minute speech, yet it comes off wooden, stilted, passionless, and without any conviction, as if she’s never seen the words before until that moment. Jeez, she looked down 43 times! (I won’t even get into the hair-flipping.) And she couldn’t even pronounce “palliative” correctly. She mispronounced it three times, leading me to wonder if she even knows what it means.

This lazy, vain, vapid woman is going to be the wife of the ruling monarch of Britain one day? Alas, Waity is little more than Britain’s 21st-century national tragedy.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

      ^ This!

Waity does very little work, only a fraction of what other members of the royal family do. She has lots of time to practice her speeches, but she can’t be bothered. She needs every free minute to brush her again — again and over again — because that’s what her priority in life is.

At that PLANNED visit to the tea shop when she had all the time in the world to prepare what to say, the best she could come up with was, “Can you . . . um . . . test the . . . um . . . smell of the tea . . . by smelling it?” Yet her hair looked good.

She’s proven herself to be a superficial simpleton, who doesn’t care enough about the peasants, or isn’t intellectually capable of it, to put any effort into preparing for her very few public appearances. But her hair looks great, right?

    • charlie says:

Moreover, she wanted the job. Desperately. She applied and reapplied. She dug her heels in to get that job with a tenacity we’ve never witnessed in her before or after. So she got the coveted job. Then what?

Usually, when you apply for a job, that’s just the beginning. If you’re hired, it’s assumed you have the necessary credentials. Yes, training may be needed, but the vast majority of people get a three-month probationary period, not a year and a half. And that’s when they really dig in and apply themselves, learning the ropes so they can prove they’re worthy of the job.

Unfortunately, as soon as Waity’s wedge-clad, bunion-ed foot was in the door for her plum job, she thought the job was over and it was now the world’s job to focus on her and her clothes and hair. Pathetic. I’m honestly baffled. How was this allowed to happen in Britain, a country I admired so much until now?

      • Allie May says:

Wow! You seem to know what you’re talking about! Too bad we can’t elect to move Waity out of her position and move you in…

      • charlie says:

LOL! Thanks for the vote of confidence, Allie May! But I wouldn’t want the job for any money. I have a wonderfully satisfying life and career that I wouldn’t trade with anyone. I can’t imagine not having the freedom to do what I want and be who I want every day. Kate is little more than a Waitybot, especially during these official functions. I could never live such a regimented, robotic life. To me, all that wealth and privilege would be far too high a price to pay for my freedom and my authenticity.

  47. Elise says:

Catherine’s speech about palliative care is empty: does she even know what palliative care is? Maybe a nurse here can explain it for us.

  48. Vesper says:

OMG, that was horrible. I know she is nervous, and understandably so, but she really should have had the speech memorized so she won’t have to constantly look down. I think it is pretty obvious that she didn’t spend as much time as she should have practising her speech.

She did attend university, didn’t she? Most honours level university classes beyond year one require an oral presentation, at least in Canada.

  49. teehee says:

Damn, I’d run circles around this twitch if I were to marry Harry. LOL

    • JulieM says:

Now wouldn’t that be interesting, if Harry ended up with someone more confident and charismatic that his dull older brother. Waity would freak. Pass the popcorn!
