I know most people will be like “WHO?” but please, for the love of God, do not comment with that thought. These are photos from the weekend wedding of Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg and his bride, a Belgian countess named Stephanie de Lannoy. Guillaume is the crown prince, the heir to the Luxembourg throne, and he will inherit the throne from his father, Henri, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, which is the title given to Luxembourg’s monarch (I had to look all of that up). Stephanie de Lannoy was (is?) a Belgian national who will have to give up her citizenship to Belgium to become the consort to the Crown Prince, etc.
Basically, I’m only writing about this because I was looking at the wedding photos all weekend, and I wanted to talk about it. I really have no idea if Guillaume and his father are popular figures in Luxembourg, or if Stephanie is a kind of lazy, Waity kind of girl, but I think they seem like nice people if I’m just judging them from their wedding photos. According to Stephanie’s Wiki, she and Guilllaume dated for two years before he proposed this April. She has the European equivalent of a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, and she speaks French, English, German and Russian. She’s 28 years old – Guillaume is 30. Also: they’re distant cousins, so this really is an old-school type of royal wedding, where both sides of the family are all related somehow.
Stephanie wore an Elie Saab wedding gown, which I think is an interesting choice for a royal bride. I do like her gown a lot, although I like it less now that I’m seeing all of the Elie Saab design elements. Like, I could see Taylor Swift in a version of this. The bride also went backless… a bold choice, right? The back of the skirt has some kind double-tiered bustle, and her train was 13-feet long. And you know I always love when a wedding gown has sleeves – I just think sleeves are a lovely look on wedding gowns, but I err on the side of conservatism anyway. I think Stephanie is a pretty woman – but I like that she doesn’t look like a supermodel, you know? She looks refreshingly normal, and I mean that in a nice way. My favorite part of the bride’s ensemble? The tiara! That tiara is GORGEOUS.
According to The Mail, the service was conducted in French and English, and they had a moment of silence for Stephanie’s mother, who passed away in August. Sad. A lot of European royalty came out for the wedding, including Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Princess Caroline of Monaco. You can read more about the wedding here. omg, the dress and veil were so elegant! I hope the trend catches on over here in the US, seems like most wedding gowns are designed for 19 year olds, even though most of us get married when we’re older now.
@Hazeldazel: There are plenty, and I mean plenty, of designers who make dresses in that style over here. In most collections there are usually two or three dresses that have lace sleeves and a high neckline, or that offer boleros and covers that create that look. It’s not a new thing either; those styles and options have been available for a while.
Great dress, great head-dress! This is the best wedding gown I’ve seen in a while, and she has such a lovely face, it’s beautiful but distinctive.
These quasi-military uniforms that male royalty wear, however — honestly they look like hotel doormen. Black tie and tails, please.

yeh that makes me wonder what she has then if it wasn’t recorded as a Bachelors and masters. I can only speak from the UK though. Maybe Belgium has a different naming system?

Well, before the Bologna-Reform other degrees existed, now its only Bachelors and Masters. Maybe the writer was used to describe it that way because with people graduating some years ago they wouldn’t necessarily have had a Bachelor or Masters degree (like a Swiss person graudating 15 years ago would have the equivalent of a Bachelor and Master degree while somebody graduating today would have a Bachelor or Master degree), but since she graduated somehow recently she very likely has a Bachelor and Masters degree, especially since Wiki calls it a Master degree.
I’m about to get my MA (in Germany) and we still have students studying under the old system. Don’t ask me what they’ve been up to these past few years because my uni changed to BA/MA in 2006. So those students will graduate with a “Diplom”, which is the equivalent of a Masters. We never had anything less than that before the Bachelor was introduced.
The whole thing is a hot mess btw. Don’t get me started.

I hate to split hairs – well, not really – but it would be wrong of me to read your comment and not rebut it.
Those princesses of yesteryear that you think are so elegant and demure – definitely not the kind of women that would be be caught naked on a balcony – are probably not as elegant and demure as they appear to be.
It is very easy to have a high opinion of those princesses when you don’t actually know much about their private lives – certainly not in the way that we’ve come to know about Kate’s and even Diana’s.
One needs to keep in mind that not hearing scandalous stories or seeing scandalous pictures doesn’t mean they didn’t happen and they don’t exist. Just a quick look into the history of royal families reveals that they have lots of skeletons in their closets, and there isn’t any reason to think that that’s changed or even gotten worse.
Be hard on Kate all you want, but at least acknowledge the fact that she’s dealing with technology and a market for scandalous pictures and sensitive information that is different from what those other princesses dealt with; at least acknowledge that not seeing evidence of scandalous behaviour does not mean that there isn’t any.

I like the dress but the bride looks just ordinary to me. In a way I think it’s a bad class if a noble born woman looks like a model. Most take concervative approach with clothes. But on the street – no one is going to turn after her, sorry.

Can it be that royal weddings will bring back wedding dresses with sleeves? I work part time at a bridal boutique and everytime I try to suggest a dress with sleeves to someone they balk and choose strapless. I am so sick of strapless gowns for brides and bridesmaids lol Most women cannot pull them off (i.e. too top heavy, sausage arms look) even with alterations/spanx holding everything together.

I agree 100%. I am so tired of the strapless trend and how every woman thinks it suits them. It is tacky (imo) to go strapless in a church. It is sweet on a beach or some summer outside wedding though.
i got married in Jan 2010, and fall 2009 I couldn’t find ANY dresses with sleeves that looked remotely chic, so I did the fit ‘n’ flare strapless thing. I wore a matching bolero for my photos. I’m sure after Kate’s wedding there were some. This too is a stunning dress.
I used to be a bridal consultant as well – strapless is just not a look everyone can wear. My bust-line is not prohibitive for strapless but I have broad square shoulders. You put a strapless on my and the NFL is going to scout me. I had to put sleeves on my dress when I got married as there were few long or 3/4 sleeve options.

Someone must still like strapless gowns because they sell a boatload of them. Even though almost every comment on every fashion/celeb site I go to (and that’s too many) is full of people stating how sick they are of them.
I think some women can wear strapless very well, some can’t, and, regardless, that it is a trend that should have run it’s course by now. It’s been about ten years of solid strapless.

Her hair looks the same in all her photos through the years and she hasn’t been caught (to my knowledge) getting extensions.Do you have evidence for that or it’s a random opinion?

I’m not going hunting for them, but there have been many posts on this site showing before/after photos that do look like Kate wears hair extensions now. I’m no expert, and I know having a professional blow dry and style make a big difference…. but she looks ‘extensioned’ to me(;
Oh and she REALLY thinned down for her wedding, even going public with her diet at the time. Probably no different from many other brides who want to be thinner for their wedding, but then she went overboard, imo.

I loved her dress. The train in that huge cathedral was stunning. And the guests did pretty well to. Sophie looked awesome.
And sleeves have always been pretty much the norm for royal weddings. Kate didn’t start a trend there by any means. Crown Princess Victoria’s dress is still my most favorite of the royal brides the last couple of years.

I like how the royals keep their original faces instead of getting their eyes lifted or noses bobbed off. Seriously, it’s refreshing! They can point to whatever distinctive feature and say “I got this from King Humperdink the Wise” or whatever. And they totally do.

Oh dear, you need to widen your references because this lace over bodice look was popularised by Princess Grace, back in the 50s, and really hollywood is to blame because her dress was designed by the inhouse designer of MGM ( or whichever studio she was contracted with) who in turn looked to the past for inspiration etc etc and so forth.
As for the concept of white wedding dresses, we can blame Queen Victoria for that so really, no such thing as an original dress. Just variations on a theme!!!

I love weddings and other people’s wedding pictures. Watched this live at the weekend. It was beautiful. That dress is gorgeous and totally theatrical as needed for such a venue. Loved that they wove silver in the lace to give it that aged look.
Loved dress,make up, hair. Was concerned about the backless part but I guess only us brits would care for such things, plus her veil covered it beautifully, and frankly if that is all I can nitpick about it…..at the end of the day,despite it’s size, it didn’t wear her.
I loved, most of all, that these 2 were happy to be marrying each other. It showed in their body language/faces etc sod protocol and being proper.

But not grooving on the groom’s scruffy beard for a wedding. In everyday life, sure, why not. But if it’s your wedding day, either have a neat, full beard or shave. And if you can’t grow a full beard, then by all means go clean-shaven.
That dress is gorgeous. I’m so tired of strapless gowns. You need a very definite type of body to carry if off (not necessarily slim, but toned) and most women end up looking sloppy in them.
I love this so so much but I really wish the bride would have gotten her roots done! As a fellow hi-lighted blonde like she is, it would have driven me crazy to not have gotten hi lights before the wedding.
The dress is lovely, but at first look it reminded me of Kate’s. This is either a love match or an arranged marriage to keep it in the family because neither of them are attractive. It is always a disappointment when I see royals and paintings of them and they are fugly. It kills my fantasy.

Beautiful bride, beautiful dress. I like that she doesn’t appear to be starving herself, or piling on the pancake makeup and eyeliner, or using fake tan cream, or botox. She looks like real royalty.
What a lovely wedding! It looked like a real fairytale. Stephanie looked so regal and dignified all through her wedding despite the fact that her mother had passed away recently. I love that she and Guillaume decided to honor the memory of her mother with many references(such as that she wore her mother’s wedding ring and that a figure of Virgin Mary was also wearing her mother’s wedding veil) in their wedding.

Of course, the DM being what it is, couldn’t resist to put a photo of Kate and William in there, only for it to backfire since most of the comments were ragging on Kate’s gown and many people said it looked so cheap compared to Stephanie’s.
I watched this live, and it was a great wedding. The music selection was wonderful. The livestream/coverage was also well-done.
I like that Stephanie didn’t look like an over-baked hot mess either. She looked fresh-faced, healthy, glowing, and very happy. She didn’t starve herself thin. She didn’t tan herself to an orange mess. She didn’t insist on doing her own hair and makeup (past photos reveal she’s not very good at applying her eyeshadow :D) and instead acquired the help of professionals so she looked her best on her special day.
When she was on her way to the cathedral, she was waving to the people on the streets and she was just leaning from side to side trying to see everyone and wave back to them. She looked so excited and even a bit goofy. She was warm and spontaneous and didn’t come across as stilted and robotic. Just very graceful and elegant. No arrogance or smugness at all.
Best moment was when she came to her father, who couldn’t walk her down the aisle as he wasn’t feeling well, and he was the one who truly “gave” her away to Guillaume. Just so sweet and also very sad as her mother passed away only a couple of weeks before.
The groom’s mother, the Grand Duchess, looked so teary-eyed right from the moment she got off the car. She looked like she’d been crying all night. She was so happy and excited, too, blowing kisses at the bride and groom. 😀
Most of the guests were well-dressed, too. Nobody was flashy, except Princess Maxima of the Netherlands but then that’s just her style, and everyone just looked nice. Best-dressed, IMO, are Princess Letizia of Spain and Princess Caroline of Monaco.
It didn’t feel like a circus of “Who’s who” and “Who’s wearing what”. It was a lavish wedding, true, but it was also very simplistic and classy in its approach in that nothing was overdone and flashy.

I like the dress the more I see it. And that veil-OMG. The tiara–breathtaking.
The best thing is that the couple look radiantly happy to be together. Everything looks so much more fluid–less stiff and choreographed than Will and Kate’s wedding. The bride looked so healthy and pretty. The comparison photo of the British royals the DM showed really highlighted that. Theirs may have seemed a triumph then, but in the light of hindsight, not as much. Even their kiss was staged. Now it seems like Will… settled. This couple figured out in two years what Will and Kate couldn’t in 10.
This is one of the most beautiful dresses I’ve seen in awhile. My tastes are at extreme ends of the spectrum – I either like the lacy, conservative Grace Kelly look or the simple slip dress like JFK Jr.’s wife wore. Anything in between doesn’t really appeal to me. And I love that she wore sleeves. Too many women need to back away from the strapless gowns.
She also looks like a nice lady. There’s no way to tell what she’s really like of course, but she has a sweet face and her happiness seems so genuine.

It’s interesting…Luxembourg is an incredibly wealthy country…They have the second highest GDP in the world. The royal wedding in Luxembourg cost about 500,000 Euros. The royal wedding in England cost around 20 million pounds….and another 10 million pounds in security, supposedly….The WSJ said something along the lines that England lost billions of dollars in revenue because of the holiday they created around the royal wedding, and the fact that the holiday came right after a holiday the weekend before.
I’m perfectly aware that England is a country with a population 100 time greater than Luxembourg…That Luxembourg is tiny….However, I Just found the sheer excess of the English wedding a little disgusting…
They are so much less stiff around each other than Will and Kate…I think Will and Kate love each other, but they seem to lack passion…The Princess of Morocco, Lalla Salma, is so beautiful and I love her blue dress..Besides the Spanish royals and Queen Rania, she’s one of my favorite royals…It interesting how much more educated the Spanish royals, Queen Rania, Lalla Salma, and even the Luxembourg royals are compared to the English royals.
The grey, textured, long sleeved, low-backed dress she wore at the reception is spectacular, better than the wedding dress itself, although the wedding dress, also textured, is beautiful in its simplicity. A truly stunning choice of gowns, the best I’ve seen on any bride for as long as I can remember, and well worthy of comment here. Her up-do is also fabulous for the occasion.

now this is what one would call a real princess and real royalty. she has style and grace and is so intelligent. she can speak six languages fluently and wasn’t a waity all her life. plus: she didn’t burnt her skin, starve herself to death, get horse-veneers and fake-a** extensions. all in all she has something that someone has to be born with, and it’s called grace and presence. no pretending, faking, naked-sunbathing…. period.
i think the bodice portion of stephanie’s wedding dress (and kate’s) are ugly. i like sleevless and strapless wedding dresses better then these dresses that look stuffy and like they encase someone’s arms like sausage. the lace appliques on the veil were gorgeous and so was the train. i also think that stephanie looked pretty and that her hair looked really great when it was down for the civil ceremony. She’s not really a countess, right? I mean, her father was a count so her mother would have been the countess, but now the title is vacant (if her father ever remarries, his new wife becomes the countess; or, when he dies and his son becomes the count, the son’s wife will be countess). Some women inherit titles or are given titles by the monarch or parliament, or whoever has that power in a particular country. But since she’s the youngest of all the children, I doubt she holds any titles of her own.
Of course, she’s now a princess by virtue of her marriage.
She is/was a Countess. You are confusing the British way with the Belgium. A daughter of a Count is a Countess. Very common in continental Europe.

does it have to do with her family being one of the ancient families? i tried to look at the other wikipedia pages linked there, such as the difference between imperial/princely counts (who is on par with the title prince) and non-prince counts.
