When I was at the gym the other day, I had a sexual/political fantasy about my dream girlfriend Rachel Maddow. In my fantasies, we go antiquing, then we talk about politics over ice cream and then we make out as we watch the sunset. In my fantasies, Rachel gives the best hugs. Anyway, midway through my fantasy, it occurred to me that my girl-crushes probably only make sense to other women. Like, all of you (fickle bitches) ladies probably understand the Maddow thing, and you probably also “get” my girl-crushes on Emma Thompson, Cate Blanchett and Rachel Weisz. What does that prove? I guess it proves that we really don’t think like men. At all.
So with that in mind, let’s all act like dudes for a change and gawk at a young blonde in a bikini. These photos are of Erin Heatherton doing a swimsuit shoot in St. Barts. I guess it’s for Victoria’s Secret, but the timing would also be right for a possible Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition pictorial, right? But no, I’m pretty sure this is for Vicky’s Secret.
So… what’s the appeal for dudes? I think Erin is pretty and she has a lovely figure, of course. I like that she seems slender and toned, but she looks like she works on it too. As in, she works out and eats healthy, as opposed to starving herself and chain-smoking. But Erin isn’t really doing it for me… not like Sweet Maddow. I guess Erin doesn’t do much for me because despite her prettiness (and she really is a very pretty girl), it doesn’t seem like there’s much “there” there. She could easily pass for Candice Swanepoel. I always get the two of them mixed up, actually. And what really is the difference? One dated Leonardo DiCaprio and one didn’t. One got scary skinny last year and one didn’t. That’s about it. Wouldn’t it be more fun to fantasize about someone with some personality?

Sure, some may or may not have them, but VS is FAMOUS for making bras and tops that push your t*ts up to your chin.
No one sees the parallel? Unless it’s confirmed somewhere that someone has had plastic surgery (Erin’s?), those comments are a bit silly…about models who work for a company who makes push-up bras.
In other photos from this shoot on other outlets, you can catch glimpses if the silicone bra inserts they put on her suit. That’s the real “secret” Victoria is harboring. They also put flesh-colored tape on the pubic area of some models to hide hair or stubble and airbrush away the evidence for publication. The models also wear a lot if body makeup. They’re all beautiful, but there us some smoke and mirrors action involved.
Actually I asked if her boobs are fake, because I thought they’d be natural.
And I know that VS is famous for it’s push ups, though I don’t think it looks attractive. My point was why they are pushing them that high, because it looks rather fake.

I doubt there’s an underwear model out there who doesn’t have some sort of breast ‘enhancement’. It may not be massive Pamela Anderson style fakies, but something to even out the size of the boobs (natural ones are almost never perfectly symmetrical) or ‘firm them up’ a bit. In any case, given that magazine photos – and VS photos in particular – are so ridiculously photoshopped these days, the question is kind of moot.

I’m not sure that there is one. Remember her job is to sell cheap scratchy underwear to women, not men. I hardly ever hear men lust over the current VS models – most men I know think them too skinny and photoshopped. Not even sure why VS bothers to use real live models, other than for PR purposes – their photos are so ridiculously ‘enhanced’ and they all look so interchangeable, that they might as well use shop mannequins.

When we get in ‘which famous person do you fancy?’ discussions, I hear men tell me they fancy Scarlet Johansen, or Rachel Weisz, or Christina Hendricks. But I can honestly say that I have NEVER heard a man say he fancies Miranda Kerr or Erin Heatherton. Now, maybe they’re lying. Or maybe the type of men I know – usually in their late 20s upwards – just don’t go for bland cut-out models?

Most men who say “I don’t feel attracted to VS models” do it because they want to make a good impression in front of a woman that doesn’t like them. Have you wacthed the movie “Malena”, where women talk about how unnatractive Belluci’s character is, and how their men told them that they would never touch her even with a stick (despite all men in the village lust for her)? If you could hear them talking about these models when other women are not around… I bet you’d hear something very different.

But anyway, I don’t agree with your point. I’m talking about conversations when the subject is famous hot people, and the men I’m talking to aren’t at ALL shy about telling me who they fancy. So if they did fancy these models, I don’t see why they wouldn’t just say so. Like I say, their job is to market underwear to women, not men, so there’s no particular reason why men have to lust over them.
I think most of the guys I know would give her the tip, at least, don’t get me wrong. But I know very few guys who would get as innately turned on by her body as they would Monica Belluci’s body [especially in Malena…great movie].
But male sexuality is facile. If you bombard them with images of stick figure models next to naked and indicate that’s what sexy looks like, most of them will buy that, because they like next to naked women.
Usually the rule of thumb seems to be: if there isn’t anything glaringly wrong with it, put it in. Heatherton’s body is an unblemished blank slate which
features orifices men enjoy.
I am kind of sexually voyeuristic, and from the time I can remember, I’ve always been turned on by the female body insofar as its capacity to turn men on visually. From what I have always gathered as a third party in the matter, that is T&A primarily, on a gut level.
This girl doesn’t really have either one, but she’s still girl meat. They will take it.

Good post. I of course agree that not many men would throw Erin or any other VS model out of bed – she’s a young, fit woman wearing not very much, after all. But I really don’t think that men lust over her the way they lust over Christina Hendricks, Monica Belluci or even Rihanna. As you say there’s something ‘antiseptic’ (good word!) about her. She’s kind of like a 12 year old boy’s idea of ‘sexy’. I bet they’re the ones posting all those You Tube vids of her!

I don’t care how trashy she looks sometimes and how much I am supposed to find that unappealing, her body and her body language scream hot, dirty sex. I look at her and wish I was a man so I could do things to her [for some reason, no matter how much the female body turns me on, the idea of me as a female having sex with another female doesn’t turn me on…it doesn’t gross me out, it’s just lacking something]. I think that is unvarnished sex appeal. Nothing high-minded about it, just basic and lustful. I can’t imagine looking at Erin Heatherton and getting that same feeling. I think that’s why bodies like her’s are used to market underwear to women. They are safe. They are neutral.
I’m a size 4. When I was a size 2 last year, the men in my life, ex-boyfriends, guys I was dating, guy friends…all of them made comments to the effect of “you looked better with more weight on you” [I had been around a size 8 most of my adult life]. I was so excited to be “skinny” and not have to worry that anyone might look at me and think “she could stand to lose a few pounds” but my breasts were down from a d cup to a c cup and my butt, which had always been like a beach ball, wasn’t the asset it used to be. I gained back a few pounds because yes, as a woman I do like to be as physically attractive to the opposite sex as I can be, it is what it is. Much to my surprise , me as a size 2 wasn’t the zenith of sex appeal I thought it would be.

Good point. You’re probably right that VS choose models like Erin not because they’re sexual, but because they’re ASEXUAL. VS is a very vanilla mass-market company, after all. Real sexuality doesn’t play well in the malls and high streets, so they go for these girls who, as I’ve said, have all the sexual power of a mannequin.
Mannequin! Yes! That’s what they remind me of, except honestly a lot of the mannequin’s I see today are pretty sexy in comparison.

What I meant is that a man knows you dislike a woman, he is not going to say he likes it in front of you, and talk better about curvier women because they know most women are OK with it (and I’m saying that as a slighly chubby woman), while are not just as OK with them liking thinner women.
And yes, maybe your male friends are the exception, but there are lots of examples that show that millions of men are attracted to them.

Dislike? I don’t ‘dislike’ any of these models (except Miranda who’s utterly annoying)- I’m indifferent to them. And I can assure you that the men I know aren’t tailoring their preferences to suit me – I think Rihanna is a fugly, fame whorish stripper masquerading as a singer, for example, and that’s never stopped men telling me how much they fancy her!
As for the ‘curvy’ thing, I’m a (UK) size 8 so there would be litle need for men to pretend they like ‘curvy’ (hate that word) women to pander to me.
And I’ve not seen evidence of ‘millions’ of men lusting after VS models. YouTube videos do not evidence make. I’m willing to bet that most of the ‘men’ for whom these models are the height of sexiness are barely past puberty.

I’m not sure if VS hire models to be ‘nonthreatening’ so much as to be nondescript. Remember that you’re supposed to pay attention to what models are wearing (not much in this case) not to the models themselves. That’s why many designers were unhappy with the ‘supermodel’ phenonemon of the 1990s. People were talking about Helena, and Linda and Naomi, not about the clothes. Perhaps the same thing happened with VS models – people were more interested in Heidi, Letitia and Eva, not the crappy underwear. Anyway, if their aim was to replace real, interesting women with bland cardboard cut-outs, they’ve succeeded very very well!
Rachel Weisz, Charilize Theron, Monica Belluci all have better bodies than this bony model.

Yeah I also find most of the people who seem obsessed with VS models are mostly females (teens and tweens) and not males. They have PR teams who shove them down our throats telling us how “hot” they are. Yawn.

The thing is, even though they are white, Adriana Lima and the other Brazilian one are minorities. It’s just that in modelling it seems “normal” if you have an unique look whereas in Hollywood you do not get jobs.
I always laugh when people throw in Brazilians like Adrianna Lima as something exotic, diverse and unique. There are Brazilians who looks as dark as Kelly Rowland yet they get very little shine, I wonder why that is? And yes, modeling is about unique looks but you can’t deny that white models have the upper hand in modeling, especially in in VS. You will have about 20 white, blonde models who mind you could pass as twins because they all look the same then they will throw in one or two non whites. The last token black Angel was Chanel Iman and she got booted off and they barely used her on any commercials yet you have 5 to 7 blondes used on every damn event and product.

Personally, I’m not sexually attracted to women at all, but the women I admire are those who combine beauty with talent and personality. Think Cate Blanchett or Helen Mirren. And while I don’t know if any of these models are ‘vapid’ in their private lives, the image they are paid to project most certainly is.

Perfect body is completely subjective. I’m not gonna critique everything I dislike about her body, but I wouldn’t trade bodies, or faces, with her. I’m not attracted to women, and I especially don’t admire models, whose entire careers are either being pinups or clothes hangers. No thanks. True observation. I’ve always felt like the women I were attracted to looked like me, or were what I wanted to look like. I am drawn to women who have similar bodies and facial shapes as mine… but if I looked exactly like Erin, imagine how many people would be drawn to ME!!
Eh…I dunno. I was fantasizing about women when I was 4 and absolutely disturbed by the idea of being a woman myself. And the women I liked looking at when I found my dad’s playboys were busty. I was horrified by the idea that I’d have big breasts like my mother. I also had the strange sense that I was supposed to be born male. I think what I’m attracted to is more based on what I think men lust after on an animal level because that perverted lust of theirs is what turns me on. And I never think of myself in my fantasies. But Erin makes a pretty picture, I can say that much. And so do Cate B. and Rachel W. The former two also have a lot more opportunity to imbue their personality into their looks for the plain fact that they are not underwear models. It could be that Erin is smart, charismatic and compassionate but we’ll never know if she sticks to her trade.

The only VS models I like are Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes. Both have stunning faces and kick-ass figures. Also, from the interviews I’ve seen, Adriana L. comes across as effervescent, charming and overall hilarious. And Doutzen K. has the most amazing butt.

I agree that most of my girl crushes have a lot more depth to them. That is probably because as Missykitten pointed out, a straight woman’s girl crush is usually a woman you admire, not a woman you’d want to make out with. As a straight woman, I’m not all interested in T&A and washboard abs. These VS models are so shallow and boring. I don’t care how skinny and tall they are, they appear completely empty in terms of personality and character. There are so many more interesting women out there who may not be over 6 feet tall, but they have intelligence, talent, charisma, and curves. I know a lot of straight men who’d rather take the latter as well. These VS models are just nice to look at for men and something for teens and women with low self esteem to envy. There is so much more to a woman than being able to fit in a bikini. That is why a VS model will never be one of my girl crushes.
