Scarlett Johansson covers the February issue of Elle UK to promote her role as Janet Leigh in Hitchcock. Exactly what is going on with her hair on this cover? Obviously, I’m a fan of the bedhead look, but it’s got no place on an otherwise sleek cover filled with neutral colors and fug, peep-toed booties. This look is neck-to-toe Victoria Beckham, and it’s nice to see that Vicky is now actively marketing her clothing to the greater-than-size-0 market. Other than the out-of-place hair, the editorial is pretty gorgeous and flattering to ScarJo’s figure. I really do like this blue and white satin dress with a bit of sexy thigh flashing through an asymmetrical sheer panel. The interview isn’t bad either, and here are some excerpts:
On turning 30 soon: “I feel like I’ve been transitioning from young woman into womanhood for a very long time. Now as I approach 30, with the last few years behind me, I feel like growing pains are behind me. It’s just nice to feel happy.”
About the phone hacking of her nude pics: “It was a crazy time. I had some problems in my family and publicly, my relationship — all that stuff. It was like ‘Oh man what next?’ But life has ebbs and flows, don’t you think? Things are more manageable now, but I’m sure something will crumble. I keep it together. I am relatively composed but I can also lose my s***. I’m pretty controlled, and probably controlling too, for better or worse. I’m working on it.”
She’s not looking to get married again: “I got married when I was young and it was incredibly romantic and I liked being married, actually. But it is different. It’s hard to put into words. To me, being in a functioning relationship doesn’t mean you have to be married. I never think about marriage. Is that weird? The only time I ever think about it is when people ask me. ‘Would I get married again?’ It’s really not important to me. It has no relevance to me right now. I’m not having kids any time soon, I’m in a nice relationship, I’m working a lot and, like I said, it’s not important to me.”
On dating outside of the acting pool: “I think there are challenges whether that person’s in your profession or not. It’s nice that [fellow actors] can relate, and you have a shorthand when you’re talking about work, but that can also be monotonous. For me, most importantly, I look for a partner who is creative. I like people that have a colourful way of looking at things, that are inspiring and like art, music and film’.”
On her unwitting “sexy” image: “I think any woman who is curvy and wears a gown to an event is, like, super-sexualised. I mean, at the time I was 18, 19. I was young. I’ve always been curvy. It runs in the family. Throw on an evening frock and it’s like all of a sudden you have boobs and everyone is like: ‘bombshell!’ Instantly it was: ‘The new Marilyn’.”

Okay, I can appreciate that Scarlett is still really tired of being considered a sex symbol, but there’s no way she can claim to have not channelled Marilyn Monroe in a recent Dolce & Gabbana advertising campaign. Although I guess she may have had no input in her styling for those shots, but I still think Scarlett must have at least been flattered by the comparisons during her earlier career. Now she’s wary of anyone even noticing that she has boobs.
As for Scarlett’s comments about marriage and how she’s not about to go there again (at least not anytime soon) as well as her thoughts on having kids … well, I guess we really now know what happened to her and Ryan Reynolds, right? He was probably disappointed that she didn’t want to give up her career and start having babies right away, and I guess they (like so many other couples) just didn’t know each other well enough before getting married. Hopefully, Blake Lively will have better luck in the long run.

I like Scarlett (maybe it is just her name; not sure)
The photoshoot looks budget for some reason. I don’t like any of the pictures at all. Well at least she is honest with herself about how she feels about children. I mean any man going into a relationship knows at the jump. No mixed messages. Maybe she said this to Ryan and like many partners he thought he could change her mind or that she really was not serious.
It happens all the time. Couples don’t take each other at that words. You hear what you want and discount the other. I think she is happy and good for her.
She has always been one of my favorites. She was a great Woody Allen girl.
Team Scarlett! There really need to be more celebrities who are open about not wanting to have kids!
Seriously the second pic is way photoshopped, her head looks bigger than the rest of her body. They really didn’t need to, they should have kept her curvaceous line.
She’s actually quite tiny…she was at my college graduation (her brother graduated with my class) and my family couldn’t believe how small she was/is…so I think the large head/small body look is accurate. Her height is listed at 5’4″, but I think she’s shorter.
Good for her. I think people sometimes rush into a second marriage to prove they aren’t a failure.
It’s a little strange to hear from an actress who seems to be looking forward to being thirty. I have a feeling she’ll be more successful in the adult stage of her career.
I really like Scarlet.
Some of her interviews annoy me, but this one doesn’t. And she really is a gorgeous girl.
“Throw on an evening frock”? Is she taking lessons from Madonna?
I like those sheer panels. Very pretty look. I am meh on Scarlet as a whole but admire some of her performances quite a bit. Mostly I find her slow-talking to be a bit annoying.
I really like her in this interview. Sometimes, she seems full of it but she sounds mature here. I like her comments about not wanting to have children or to marry again. And I think she looks beautiful in this shoot, she is not the best fashionista but I have always loved her figure. I recently saw (her first movie?) manny & lo and she was so cute and pretty in it.
I agree with pretty much all your points here. I don’t dislike Scarlett but I usually dislike her interviews; this one is the exception.
I do hate those boots though.
I didn’t like the cover at all. Seemed so … “simple”? 😀
She’s still gorgeous though!
I love her!!
I’m not too crazy about the styling of that dress nor those toe boots, heehee.
She seems comfortable where she is, good.
” I can appreciate that Scarlett is still really tired of being considered a sex symbol,”
Eh, why? With her only slightly above average looks, Scarlett should be thanking her lucky stars she’s considered a sex symbol. And it’s not like she rivals Cate Blanchett in the acting stakes, is it?
I cannot warm to this woman, I’ve tried (admittedly not much)but there is just something about her I don’t like. the photoshop on this isn’t great either.
Every word of her response is a big FU to Blake. Love it.
Hahahaha I just noticed that. Blake will be the new goop with cookbooks and it’ll be titled barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen like a good southern woman
I’m sorry but don’t compare Goop to Blake please. Goop can be a bit annoying and diet-crazy, agreed, but at least she has a reasonably decent career as an actress. I loved Good in “Proof” with Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal, for example. She was quite good. The best Blake has achieved was marrying RR.
You assume she’s obssessing about Blake. If she is, that’s too bad but I’d give her more credit than that. I doubt Ryan will be accused of referencing Sean Penn in his interviews, or divulge much of anything about past relationships.
+1
I’m no fan of Scarlett, but it gets a bit tiresome when people always assume that women (but never men) spend their lives obsessing about past relationships. From what I can see, Scarlett seems to be having a lot of fun and doesn’t appear to be giving Ryan a second thought.
Love her. I have tickets to see her on broadway next month. cannot wait!
The difference is- Blake doesn’t have much of a career so she can afford to take time off and start a family. Scar Jo, while not the greatest actress of her generation (or even close), has an active career and is making interesting career choices i.e. her new film with Jonathon Glazer. On the flip side, I also think Blake wants to have a child and start a family ASAP. So different strokes..
” she can afford to take time off ” = retire from acting completely. Nothing wrong with that. She’s had a mediocre career, but unlike most people her age she has the means to retire young and focus on family while still having some accomplishments to her name. She wasn’t likely to get many parts after 30 anyway, so why not publish a few ghost written cookbooks/picture books and settle into a comfy home life?
Between the two, though, I’m completely team Scarlett.
The difference is they’re different people. Ones choices are no less valid or honourable than the other.
I think she looks gorgeous…I like her a lot. But who is she dating? I thought she and that tall dude broke up…
You assume way too much when you say Ryan expected her to quit her career to have his babies. Every time he was asked about children, he always said it was far off in the future. She wasn’t working as much, but that wasn’t Ryan’s fault. She wasn’t winning some of the leading roles she was going out for, so maybe she wasn’t getting as many offers, either.
She was an active partner in promoting her sexuality and made a lot of money off it. Nothing wrong with that, but to act like it was something that was put on her is a bit disingenuous. She should just say she was acting or playing a role, but it’s not the totality of who she is or how she sees herself.
Don’t like the shoes, but the outfits are flattering. The messy hair is fun.
I don’t know, i think there are very few eighteen year olds who can control how the industry views them, (and wasn’t her mother running her career until recently?)
You only have control over yourself and what you choose to participate in. Why not just say I was young, those were the opportunities presented to me, and I wanted the experience and money so I ran with it? I would hope her mother would be protective and listen to what her daughter wanted more than a manager with no personal connection.
I am more interested in the story about New York´s secret sex parties. Anyone has a link?
I have always thought that Ryan wanted it all and Scarlett was fine to just be married. Given that the most recent Mrs. Reynolds has no projects on the horizon, i don’t think this is much a stretch to say they had different priorities in the marriage.
Its to bad it didn’t work out but i like that she doesn’t talk badly about the experience or give to much detail basically just confirming its a part of her life story and it was a good experience. Also love that she isn’t lying about wanting/dreaming of children, respect.
Given his former wife’s words and actions, it’s not a stretch for me to believe she wasn’t fine with being married to him or anyone else.
She has talked quite a bit and has never mentioned children as an issue.
His present wife has always talked about having a family and pursuing her other interests. Perhaps it’s not all about what her husband wants, and I guess she was being honest, too.
I want to applaud what Scarlett said; I want to hear more women saying that they’re not desperate for marriage or kids. I love being married and having children, but when that desperation to attain it sets in, it’s unattractive. Unfortunately, I don’t trust anything Scarlett says. She goes from relationship to relationship while saying she doesn’t care; she poses semi-clothed and pushes the sex symbol envelope while proclaiming she doesn’t like being seen that way; she deliberately posed as Marilyn Monroe while saying she doesn’t want to be seen as her. Where does the truth begin?
Though I like the styling and I like the shoes. Victoria Beckham has a very good eye for style.
She is immature bimbo, ryan saw it and ran away she cheated on Ryan, and then Sean penn dumped her, marriage is not suitable to her lifestyle, without makeup she actually looks plain with that bulbous nose.
No I dont have a link, but they run ads on craiglist looking for Russian women with pretty feet. Very odd.
Indefense of her Dolce ads….the Dolce image is sexy marilyn type of bomshell. they market sexy italian version of that bomshell, all boobs and hips.Any woman who does their ads, even if they don’t have the body type or colouring is styled that way.
Scarlett, being blonde, immediately looks like she’s channeling Marilynn in those ads, but then i would say the same of Monica Belluci, Madonna, various models.
It’s the Dolce image.
Well that’s the thing. The difference with the likes of Monica Bellucci and if I may add Sophia Lauren or Brigitte Bardot is that they had the status of living goddesses, thus Dolce coming around would not only enhance the whole boobs/hips/curves etc. it would also play around their persona. Men who look at them want to possess them, they are possessed they are bewitched. Women want to be them.
Marilyn what worked was not only her über sex appeal but also that persona of her she was that young naive woman who desperately wanted to be loved and accepted whereas most men looked at her like a piece of a$$. If Dolce hired her she’d play herself in front the camera and the combination of sex appeal and her persona would naturally work. [Hell when she said she was wearing only Chanel No. 5 as a “bed dress” the sales went up, men swooned and rushed to buy perfumes for their women to explore that fantasy, and women followed]
Another example would be Charlize Theron, the woman is naturally fierce, strong character (as seen in her interviews) yet she still has that elegance; and the Dior ad and creative people definitely worked around and I simply can’t get enough of that ad. She is simply stunning in both versions of the ad, when she strips off her clothes and then when she walks in that dress on a catwalk.
Scarlett has been through the years depicted as sexy and played a bit of the game no doubt, plus her sorta deep voice was also a must. Unfortunately what is off in the Dolce ad isn’t the fact she is dressed and pampered like a “Marilyn” type, it’s more her performance. As much as she is supposed to be that “naive and ingenue” (from what I understand it’s what they were trying to pull off here) it still does come off, so the pretty Scarlett picture looks cringe worthy. Sadly the creative team didn’t come up with that thing that would define her persona properly (and honestly she is not that great of an actress) Same goes for Brad, as much as he *IS* The Pitt well look how that turned out…
Sorry for the long post 🙂
It’s obvious to those with life experience; Scar is suffering from a mental breakdown in the past year. All of the signs are there if you condense tidbits from recent events. Starting back at the leaked phone pics. The cheap tawdry tattoos are the main red flag.
Her hair and those shoes look terrible, come to think of it, this all looks very budget. I think she is too short for the dress on the cover, they should have tailored it to fit her height. I don’t mind this interview, I usually find her insipid but here she isn’t as grating. I agree with her about the kids and marriage thing. How long were he and Ryan together before they got engaged/married? They always seem like a mismatch to me.
Scarlett built her career on being sexy once she shifted to playing adult roles. No doubt there is an overwhelming trend in Hollywood toward objectifying women and a tremendous pressure for them to market their sex appeal, but she played the game too, and it is so grating when these actresses bitch and moan about being perceived one dimensionally when they used their sexuality as a career platform to begin with. Nothing wrong with it, necessarily. Do what you have to do to get where you feel you need to go. Just don’t act all surprised and exasperated later on about the effect it has had on your public image.
She marketed herself that way and now she is complaining. Boooohooohooo poor Scarlett.
When I saw the first shot I thought “this looks like Victoria Beckham design”. And I was right. Bitch is working hard.Good work.
I cannot warm to her either and she’s just never been one of my fave actresses. About the clothing in these photo shoots, I do like her hair and the lights give her a nice look, but I do not think she is anywhere near sensational looking. Yes, the boots look fug, too :- )
Normally, she gives the most excruciatingly annoying interviews. This time it sounded more down-to-earth and level-headed. Either she has matured a little bit or is playing the part that she has.
Cannot really warm to her though, her garrish tattoo, airhead ways and choice in douchebags. I think Ryan definitely realised after time she was more H…o…than housewife.
Say what you will about Blake, but she is at least a little more on the virtuous, wholesome side.
Who is it that Scarlett is in a “relationship” with, btw? I thought she broke up with Nate…
Say what you will about Blake, but she is at least a little more on the virtuous, wholesome side.
Tell that to Jennifer Garner.
I do feel sorry for her if Reynolds is as controlling as all the gossip sites claim.
