Back in the mid 1990s, Matt Lauer was NBC’s golden boy when he took over “Today” anchor duties from Bryant Gumbel, but now, he’s pretty much dirt, and I think he’s finally beginning to realize this fact. Matt’s brand was damaged, perhaps irrepairably, when he basically got Ann Curry fired from her co-anchor position. Ironically, ratings have fallen since Ann’s departure, which has led to “Today” losing its leading spot to “GMA,” and Matt has faced a rumored paycut as a result because “Today” bosses suspect that he’s the reason for fallen ratings. What’s more, the “Today” staff is said to hate Matt for what he did to Ann, and even Al Roker jokes that Matt throws people under the bus for his own benefit.
Now Ann, who has been relegated to a much lesser position and very little NBC airtime, has received an offer to take over Anderson Cooper’s 8pm timeslot on CNN. In a strange move, Matt is said to be campaigning NBC bosses to let Ann out of her contract so she can make the move. Suspicious?
Matt Lauer is telling his bosses at NBC that his former TODAY co-anchor Ann Curry should be let out of her contract immediately so the respected journalist can take a job at CNN, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.
“Matt thinks that NBC should let Ann out of her contract so that she can take the CNN gig,” a source tells Radar. “He can’t imagine why the bosses are dragging their feet and are at a stalemate. It would allow Ann to get back on the air on a regular basis and everyone can move on from the debacle. Matt only wishes Ann the best and thinks it’s for the best if she were to take a job at another network.”
As previously reported, almost two weeks after Ann notified NBC executives that she wanted out of her contract, her bosses are still keeping her in the dark about whether they’ll release her so she can go to CNN.
Curry is hoping to make the move in February where she’d join her former TODAY boss Jeff Zucker, who is now running the cable news network.
Zucker has his eye on Curry to occupy Anderson Cooper‘s current 8 pm EST time slot.
Since Curry’s disastrous departure from TODAY this past summer, ratings on the once-dominant morning program have continually declined, allowing ABC’s rival Good Morning America to capture the #1 spot.

I really think that Matt’s intervention in this matter on behalf of Ann is a clear attempt to repair his own reputation in the eyes of his co-workers and the public. If his strategy works and Ann goes on to flourish at CNN, then he can always step up later and say, “See? I helped her get there.” I can even envision a future Friar’s club roast in Ann’s honor where Matt makes “jokes” about their past rumored kertuffle. He’s such a self-serving douche.

I hope she goes to CNN…much better fit for her!!!
love Ann.
I think Matt is a douche… but at the same times it’s not all his fault. The execs and everyone involved with the firing are just as much at fault as he is. And it’s not really fair to place all the blame on him. Honestly… they didn’t HAVE to do anything.
This is already pretty well known.
One of the defenses the Today Show used was that Ann would be taking on work outside of the Today Show format which led many to believe she’d be taking more news assignments. Of course…since that was never their intention it became pretty clear to the public how much of a lie that was when Ann was hardly shown or utilized for any news segment at all for NBC.
Matt wants Ann to go to CNN because he wants the bleeding to stop. If she’s gone maybe she’ll be forgotten instead of constantly being the elephant in the room. Of course he’s championing for her, he has the job he wants, she’s gone, he wouldn’t be giving the job back to her (admitting his failure) so instead he can ‘give’ her a new position. It’ll be interesting to see if the bosses let her out of her contract, they’re stubborn.
I’ve been doing 26 Acts of Kindness inspired by Ann, and it has been such a wonderful experience (I’ve been sharing it with my 6 yr old girl). I wish her only the best. To quote Will Ferrell, Matt Lauer can suck it.
Somebody please tell me when Matt Lauer became God at NBC. My hope is that one day, Ann will be in a position of authority over Matt and he will need her. But alas! He’s burned that bridge. Lo siento!
I think he’s getting unfairly blamed here, I’m not a fan but I doubt he was the sole reason for her departure. Networks have burned the ladies throughout history and I think Matt’s unpopularity with the rest of the cast is part of his problem. I mean if Al Roker takes mean digs at him, he must be a real d-bag.
He may not have been the one with the initial idea to rid the show of Ann, but he was the driving force behind seeing the idea to fruition. He had to distract attention from his rapidly deteriorating reputation and her departure was the perfect distraction. There’s nothing unfair about his bearing the brunt of the blame, alongside the network bosses, and the digs from his own coworkers serve to let the public know just who/what he is.
I love her coat. Like, really, really love it.
Also, Matt Lauer is a douchebag.
Was thinking the same thing! My boggest take away from this is what a gorgeous coat! Oh, and yep, Lauer is a douche.
I think you really love this coat for a few reasons that you might want to consider the next time you buy a coat.
1. Princess lines – always a flattering look.
2. Color – this color teal will always be in style.
3. Pockets on the seam. No bulky flaps or patches to pull one’s eye away from the line of the coat.
4. Buttons that harmonize with the color of the coat-not too dark, not too light. The buttons do not stand out.
I LOVE her outfit.
It isn’t that GMA is any better than they were before – they’re not – it’s just that The Today Show started sucking hard and kept sucking.
The Today Show is foundering for a lot of reasons, but I think Ann Curry’s departure is only a very small part of it.
Still, they should let her go. She is a good newscaster in a different format, so let her fly and go do that.
Matt is an idiot for a lot of reasons, but I think he’s paid his price for the whole Curry debacle. Maybe they can all move on once she’s gone.
As an aside, she is the youngest looking woman in her fifties that I’ve ever seen!
Yeah, she looks good and she has something special about her, she seems so warm and real.
The show is foundering because it’s about them…and they aren’t that interesting. How about some real news stories, not fluff?
I heard that Anderson Cooper is leaving TV; is that true?
Matt Lauer – I can see him being a tyrant.
I watch CBS Morning Show and GMA. CBS is hitting his stride. I like Rose and Gayle and Norah are hitting their stride. But with GMA, you just feel the love with that group and I think that is why they are thriving. The Today Show does not have anything to offer to make up for their shortcomings.
I never liked Ann in Meredith’s spot as co-host, but Savannah is no better. I would never stop watching because they got rid of Ann because I rarely watched anyway when Meredith left. But I thought she was being moved to high-profile on-air field reporting and doing segments for nightime news shows, etc. I am disgusted with NBC for burying her career the way they have after taking her off morning show I’m not mad for taking her off it. I’m mad for how she has been treated afterwards. Shame on NBC. They better let her out of her contract or I will stop watching NBC news and the morning show ever again.
Where the hell is Anderson Cooper going?!
I think Matt’s just trying to cover his own ass. He was wrong; he did Ann wrong; and he knows it. So now, he’s in self-preservation mode, because he knows he could be next.
NBC needs to let Ann go to CNN, where she will shine, I’m sure.
I don’t know about all of the drama, but i never thought that Anne was any good. I just never bought her as a news person. She may be a fabulous person, but to me, I really loathed when she interviewed people because she always took on that very soft voice, and it drove me crazy! Katie Couric should not have left. She hasn’t done much of interest since, and she and Matt seemed like they worked well together.
I believe the ratings have slipped because Savanah is HORRIBLE. She is so very awkward in the position.
Matt does nothing that doesn’t benefit Matt. Self-centered d’bag that he is, I still hope that his attempt to get the network to release Ann is a success.
Ann is a class act. Always has been. She deserves to be treated accordingly. The best thing that ever happened to her was her departure from sharing a desk with that twit.
