Here is your Open Post for tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Generally, this awards show is somewhat low-key (compared to the Globes and the Oscars), but some years there will be some big news. Like, Angelina Jolie debuted her bump (when she was pregnant with the twins) at the SAGs in 2008. And last year at the SAGs she was apparently boozing it up with Tilda Swinton. Alas, I don’t think we should expect anything that spectacular for this year’s SAGs. And by that I mean, all of the drama will be left to who actually wins the awards, because none of them are sure things.
So I’m giving you the two biggest competitors for this year’s Best Actor race – Daniel Day Lewis and Hugh Jackman. Hugh won the Globe for Comedy/Musical for Les Miserables and DDL won the Globe for Drama for Lincoln. I think DDL has come into this awards season as “the one to beat” and Hugh has been running a solid, look-at-my-happy-family, everybody-loves-me campaign. Hugh seems genuinely grateful and gratified when he wins something. Daniel seems… well, he’s happy when he wins something too, and everybody likes and respects him. I think the instinct for a lot of people will be to give them both something, so it will be interesting to see who wins tonight. The SAGs are a great predictor for the acting awards at the Oscars.
So, if you had an Oscar ballot, who would you choose? I’m not sure! I would angle more towards Hugh just because… DDL already has two Oscars. But it will be fun to watch! And tomorrow we’ll have all of the fashion & awards coverage!

+1 DDL gave a magnificent performance and he nailed the look of Lincoln so well, I had forgotten it was an actor. Whoever did the casting was spot on.

I don’t know, I don’t see them deliberately not touching each other because of rumors that let’s face it – are in full swing as it is. She might not want people to touch her. I’m watching crummy live stream but from what I read she wouldn’t take his hand when they presented – she probably didn’t want him to get sick.

Hugh Jackman and DDL!!! Love them both; loved how Hugh threw out all kinds of love to his wife during the awards.
DDL will win like a bulldozer quietly squashes a snail, only that after investigation the CSI find out that the snail was suicidal anyway by getting into that fight…
Anyway, Oscar ballot wise I am rooting for dark horse Joaquin Phoenix.
Because he is the overachieving 3rd grader who won’t allow anyone but himself to answer the questions the teacher asks.
Sorry but I’m right with Anthony Hopkins when it comes to method acting. There is no need to immerse yourself in your roles the way he does.
I understand. But at the end of the day, even though it may look extreme, it pays off seeing the result, the man is undoubtedly outstanding. Also he is pretty much aware of it to care about his carry to the point of taking a year or two off until the next project.
Some go to the extreme and other go for other methods. As long as it pays off i.e. the result is good, I don’t mind much eh.
Speaking of A. Hopkins I remember a similar story (more likely apocryphal) about Laurence Olivier who told a Dustin Hoffman who was running miles and miles to prepare for his marathon runner role “Try acting dear boy!” haha!
Ms. Kay, you quoted something bitchy Laurence Olivier said so you are awesome. While the end result can be amazing, and I’ve seen Lincoln it’s really good (Sally Field stole the show for me though). However, I look at acting as a fun game of play pretend like we play as children. Making it into this intense art takes the fun out of it for viewers and I would expect the actors as well. But this is also why I’m not an actor.
Don’t mind me though, I think my strep throat is making me extra snarky.

that said, i adore Hugh but i am rooting for DDL. if only because DDL isn’t in my face all the time now or ever so i would be a terrible academy voter because that would be my voting criteria.

Olivier had a great point with that bitchy remark, don’t get lost into the freaking intense preparation to the point to lose the acting bit. And that is why I respect the likes of DDL as much as he might be extreme, he is amazing.
It’s not like AnnE Hathaway who thinks that because she starved herself to death (from the way she talks about it one could believe it) for Les Mis role she thinks as herself in the same league or then is pretentious enough to think she could be. Bitch please, the Fantine role could have gone to any other decent actress and the actress would’ve been good too, thus she isn’t that unique as she thinks she is. She ain’t no Christian Bale, dude was scary and good in The Machinist.
Oh you do not want to get me started on AnnE. I can’t stand that woman. When we all saw the first photos of her haircut for Les Mis, I accurately predicted that she would campaign for her Oscar by telling stories of how she cried as she allowed them to sacrifice her hair for the role. AnnE is so transparent and see through and I sincerely believe after her GG speech, the Academy and everyone else will see right through it. But part of me hopes she gets her damn Oscar and the supporting actress curse will kick in and all of her projects will dry up.
I think we’re giving Anne Hathaway way too much credit for deviousness/importance here. She’s just to darn needy to actually hate. She’s like a fly, buzzing around my head that I can’t swat away. I think it’s what Ms. Kay says – she’s trying to make herself seem way more unique than she is.
That said, I do have an intense loathing for people who name themselves after famous historical/literary characters (Tom Hardy is off the hook, because I actually only got his name last week while rereading Jude the Obscure. *hangs head in shame).

Oscar, schmoscar. The real question should be who would you rather? DDL or Hugh Jackman? A girl could strain herself trying to answer that question.
I’d pick DDL wolf eyebrows over Van Helsing/Wolverine combined! Would love to see if his love making method (read : f!cking) is as Oscar worthy as his acting method.
I’m inclined to agree. If he’s THAT method, one assumes that a little direction could go a long way.
On the other hand, I’m currently eating cookies in my sweat pants and the knowledge that HJ can get hot for a woman who doesn’t mind letting herself go is quite appealing.
On that note, has she lost weight?

That’s easy! I would humbly ask Debbie Furness’ permission to borrow Hugh for 24 hours…it would be around the same time my devoted one would be asking Christina Hendricks’ husband for permission. 😛
Don’t get me wrong DDL is quite attractive. The problem with DDL I would be too afraid of the idea he is immersing himself in a role and I would be sleeping with said character and not the actual Daniel Day-Lewis.
The sad thing is that he seems to be so manipulative of his wife. He probably refuses to have sex while he prepares for his role because ~his character wouldn’t do it~
You can almost feel all the method techniques in DDL’s performances, as its not a human being anymore he is trying to portrait. Humility and subtlety is missing in all his performances. Anyway I am not a fan of him anyway, he is a bit too full of himself for my liking.
Had you put Hugh up against Ewan or Liam (Neeson, not Hemsworth) yes, I would have burst something.

I really want to like DDL but his method acting irks me. He’s the annoying overachiever at school when it comes to awards I like what I can see of Debbie’s dress but the pink wrap has got to go.
I don’t think Hugh should win just because DDL has two Oscars. That’s a faulty logic. If someone gives five mind blowing performances, he/she should win all five times. I’m rooting for DDL. I love Hugh but Les Mis was a long yawn for me. I’m rooting for Joaquin to get the Academy award.
It is faulty logic. But DDL needs to quit being the hardcore overachiever. Joaquin’s character in The Master disturbed me but if it can’t be Hugh, let it be Joaquin.
Joaquin should win but DDL has won pretty much 95% of all the critics awards out there. Joaquin doesn’t stand a chance, sadly.
Hardcore overachiever? What’s that supposed to mean? He has an acting technique like all actors do and his seems to be more detailed than the others. The man does one movie in five years and his commitment is there for all to see. His acting technique is not liked by a lot of people but that does not mean he’s an overachiever. He’s competitive like everyone else but also intensely committed. Other actors don’t make one movie in five years.
I know DDL is sublime, but I’m rooting for Hugh.
He won’t win the SAG (maybe Les Miserable has a chance at the Cast SAG), but I think given the voting block and his history with the Academy, he has a chance at the Best Actor Oscar.

The little sadistic schadenfreude devil in me WANTS AnnE to have an epic meltdown of Kanye West proportions if she loses at The Oscars. I know that’s harsh but I can’t stand her prissy high maintainance attitude and her speech at the GGs just made me want to throw something at the tv.
THe problem with the SAG award though, is that the speeches are all terribly lame. Lots of self-congratulation and comments about how much more the award means because it comes from peers. Anne Hathaway’s speech would be even more vomit-inducing under such circumstances.
I’m hoping she loses at the SAGs because everyone in Hollywood feels the same way about her that we do.

I think Jessica hs more support because she is an actors’ actor.
JLaw gave the most showy performance and people love her and her movie.

Tough one. I think Chastain for SAG as well. Isn’t she Juilliard – that may influence actors. JLaw may still see that Oscar but I think Chastain may get it for this one.

I think that if JLaw doesn’t win the SAG she is out of the race because the Academy really loved Amour so Emannuelle Riva could surprise.
I’m rooting for Jessica because her performance was fantastic. Any other actress would have overacted it but Jessica didn’t.
I think it very well may be Watts. All the ladies gave good to great performances in my opinion, but I thought Riva blew them all away. It’s interesting how some of the Oscar bloggers will straight out say they think JenLaw or Jessica Chastain or Watts may win, but that they wish Riva would win. It kind of drives home the point that so much has to do with campaigning and being in the right kind of film and in an English language film. Poor Riva has done absolutely no campaigning. Anyway, the reason I think it will be Watts is because she is so popular among the industry people (RDJ flat out pimped her out in front of JenLaw and Chastain at some event) and those industry people are the ones that decide the awards for SAG and Oscar unlike the critics awards. Secondly, it’s the kind of role the academy eats up…(white) mother fighting for her kids and survival. Lastly, Watts is a fantastic, established actress who has never won before. I think JenLaw and Chastain will cancel each other out, and Riva will be hampered by it being a French language performance and not promoting and Wallis is too young. That said, Chastain is also popular and considered a “serious actress” and was freaking awesome in Zero Dark Thirty. Like it was stated, she’s Julliard trained…I think a lot of people respect her.

Hopefully! Riva was SO fantastic! But, sadly, she was not nominated today because they nominated Marion (who was fantastic too). But she will take home the BAFTA and that will put her in front of the pack.
I think that whoever loses today is out of the race because there is no way for Riva to lose the BAFTA and so she will become the frontrunner next to whoever wins today. Hopefully, Jessica or Naomi because they were wonderful.
Oh, I read the other day that every. single. actor that is part of SAG gets to vote so that really complicates things. We are, after all, talking about 14000+ members!
@Flor. Oops, I was thinking too far ahead to the Oscars when I mentioned Riva instead of Marion. I loved loved loved Marion’s performance, and was disappointed that she wasn’t nominated for the Oscar. If I had to pick the top three female performances, I would go 1) Riva 2) Marion 3) Chastain. But…Marion is la française, and only one foreign language pick was going to be let in. Regardless of whether it is SAG or Oscar, I really do think JenLaw and Chastain very well may cancel each other out and leave Watts with the statue. Still wishing for Riva, though, in terms of the Oscar.

I only caught bits & pieces. I usually like Claire Danes, but thought her makeup was hideous. Amanda Seyfried finally pulled it all together–love her dress, hair, and makeup. Liked what I saw of Nicole Kidman’s dress, and thought Marion Cotillard looked fabulously amazing.

Wow, production value of the opener was terrible! I swear the announcer said something like “There’s Jessica Chastain of Zero Dark Thirty, looking like…zero dark thirty.” It was so bad, and the elevator music, ugh.

Jennifer Lawrence looked beautiful. Loved the dress. Her hair color was so pretty against her skin and eyes. Nicole’s face looked really normal tonight. I love her accent. Naomi Watts is so pretty. Loved her makeup.

Forgot to comment on that one, I think Marion Cotillard should tell Dior to take a seat and may be hook up with another brand, as it keeps getting sad one outfit after the other. That bow tie on the front was a tragic fail.. Hell the whole thing was!
Am I the only one who DIDN’T like Jennifer Lawrence’s look? Makeup is too dark, you can tell she’s pale from being sick. Not a good combination. And the dress…a navy strapless prom dress. Blah.
The fashion world really does not know what to put her on. All her dresses are too old for her or funny looking. This one looked great but then it seems it is a short dress with a longer fabric under it and when she went on stage it opened and almost rip apart.
I have been saying his for ages. They don’t know how to portray her. And that is why her dress choices are so all over the place. I loved the fit of the dress, but when she was on stage it lost something. Maybe the spark because she was sick. She looked dull for some reason. Again it could be the sickness. I think she has to find her style. Right now she seems to wear whatever they pull for her. not much input. It will be interesting to see how her style develops as time goes on. I loved her RED dress when she was nominated for WB. That looked like “her”.
Completely disagree. She is stunning in that CD gown, it’s a beautiful fit and I think the navy colour and the beautifully done hair/make-up highlights her lovely skin, she doesn’t even look as sick as she is tonight – that’s great styling.

It was Jennifer’s night all around. I thought she looked AMAZING. And I’m not too happy about most of her fashion choices (Rachel be gone!) – tonight she looked classic and phenomenal.
Didn’t like the look. Thought she looked great in that red number for the oscars that one time-it was youthful and fresh looking. Sometimes they overdo her makeup and it makes her look like a kid playing with mamna’s compact. Didn’t like the dress either but she looked cute. I just think she can be a bombshell when dressed right.
Is anyone else starting to wonder if JLaw is one of Harvey’s girls? I mean he has a history of picking young actresses to sleep with and then cast in everything and she is just WAY to affectionate and ass kissy with him.

That being said I still love JLaw and am happy she won tonight.
I was happy for her, but this was the second speech that was so over the top with him and his reps plus all the blind items of him looking for a new young actress to “back” just really made me wonder.
I know she was great and deserved it but if one day I hear that she was one of his girls I would not be surprised.

I think his influence has definitely benefitted her this season. I think she’s such a talent already, but I don’t think SLP should be the project that gets her in an oscar in a year of such strong contenders. But Weinstein definitely has worked his magic. I don’t think she’s his wink wink kinda girl, but he likes blondes with boobs so she better watch out.
You are spot on. Jennifer is a very good young actress but SLP was NOT Oscar friendly and it wouldn’t have had all those nomination hadn’t Harvey been on their side.
Jennifer, right now, is a Harvey’s product so yes, she is a Harvey girl.

Me too. One of the best movies I saw last year. The tension had me on the edge of my seat and so well paced and acted.
I love DDL and he gave a great performance in Lincoln but Hugh just blows everyone away as Valjean. Not easy to act through singing but Hugh is even better in a musical than in a dialogue role. DDL certainly couldn’t do as well as Valjean, given his ordinary turn in the musical “Nine” a few years back. Hugh deserves this year” oscar!
What happened with Jennifer’s dress. I saw a weird video of it on another site. did it split or was it in two pieces or what.
Well I got work tomorrow. Just one more Awards show and this is all over.. Congrats again to the winners but it was a boring show.

It started to spIit when she got up to collect her award, apparently the original design of the gown included a sheer panel, which they altered out at the last minute. I thought considering there was a hole of increasing size forming as she walked, the fact that she kept her cool and held it together, knowing that this was happening in front of everyone, was so commendable! She showed such class and professionalism, you wouldn’t have realised anything was wrong when she was on stage.
