Catherine Zeta Jones is doing the publicity rounds for her new movie, Side Effects, which co-stars Jude Law, Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara. It’s a thriller with a prescription drug premise and is out next week. I keep seeing promos for it and it actually looks pretty good. Anyway, it’s nice to see Catherine out and about, and I especially enjoyed her seeing her at the Golden Globes. She looks fab as usual, although I question whether she’s “43” as she claims. (It’s not just me! The suggested Google Searches for “Catherine Zeta Jones age” are “Catherine Zeta Jones age lie” and “Catherine Zeta Jones age 51.”) So people are wondering about it, although I know that a lot of you claim that her early acting history proves she’s as young as she says. She’s a smoker and she goes in for some injectables like a lot of other Hollywood types, that could explain it. She doesn’t look plastic and she looks amazing! Just not 43.
Anyway, Catherine gave some quotes on last night’s Tonight Show which are sure to embarrass her 12 year-old son, Dylan Michael Douglas. She said he’s becoming a teenager and that “everything is a phallic symbol, everything is a penis.” I get that it’s funny, but that’s something you bitch about to your friends, not on national television! I feel sorry for that poor kid with his mom blabbing like that. Here’s more:
Catherine: He’s 12, how did that happen? He really is coming into his formative teenage years. Well everything, anything is a phallic symbol, everything looks like a penis. It’s like ‘oh gosh, how long is this going to go on?’ Does it ever stop Jay?
Jay: It doesn’t stop.
Catherine: I thought so, I’m not a guy, obviously.
Alright, so maybe that isn’t as bad as I thought it was and she’s just surprised by a universal guy thing. I don’t know, my kid is young and farts are funny to him. See, I just embarrassed my kid publicly, it’s hard not to do that when you’re a parent. It’s payback.
Catherine also said that Dylan was the last kid to get a cellphone in his class, at 11, and that “he’s calling his girlfriend now… when we were kids we didn’t have all these gadgets, we just played.”
Extra also has a new interview with Zeta-Jones, in which she addresses her bipolar disorder and gives some nice quotes about her husband playing Liberace.
Catherine Zeta Jones plays a psychiatrist in her new movie, “Side Effects” and the star opened up to “Extra’s” Jerry Penacoli about her own personal battle with bipolar disorder.
Jerry, “In terms of your own personal problems with this issue, will you talk to your children about it?” Catherine, “Sure I will, if they’re even interested in it, personal issues I like to remain personal, but this is a disease that effects many many people…In America it’s much more open, in Britain we have that kind of stiff upper lip, you know keep calm, carry on, get over it, what are you nuts?”
Both Catherine and Michael Douglas carrying on in spite of their health challenges, Catherine saying her husband is doing incredibly well.
As for her husband’s role in “Behind the Candelabra” Catherine said, “It’s fantastic, my husband is amazing and hey if he had to go to bed or kiss anybody, let it be Matt Damon rather than anybody else.” Jerry, “You weren’t jealous at
all?” Catherine, “Actually, I WAS jealous.”While director Steven Soderbergh who is behind both “Side Effects” and “Behind the Candelabra” is planning on retiring from movies, Catherine hinted that he will come back to direct her in a stage performance based on Cleopatra, “Cleo” which she says is in the early stages of development.
She handled the bipolar question really well. I like how she made it about raising awareness in general and deflected the personal aspect of it. She was quite brave to go public with her diagnosis.

Ah the joys of male adolescence. My sons are 11 and 13 and they and their friends do not miss an opportunity to use the word “balls” in conversation whenever possible. Bodily functions are still an ongoing source of humor, too. Good times.

Ooer, I wouldn’t want to be her son when he goes to school next, but then again, how many twelve year old boys read about gossip? I won’t disagree about her evaluation, though. There’s a couple at the other end of the hall in our building and they’ve got an 11 year old son who’s at that stage where he and his little friends think it’s hilarious to draw a penis on their school books.

There is nothing “brave” about going public with something like being bipolar because there’s no shame in BEING bipolar and this is the kind of thing that makes me see red. She doesn’t get kudos for doing it and I have always found it highly suspicious that she just happened to announce it right when her husband and his son were getting all the attention from the media. She went “away” for a week and was fine? Bullsh*t.
Really? You don’t think it’s brave to admit your brain wiring is off and you have to take medication to offset it? Do you think people who have cancer aren’t brave by bringing it to public attention so people will get checked out?
There’s huge stigma to mental illness, even today. And, yes, I’m bipolar too.
No, I don’t. Bravery implies there’s something to be ashamed of and in this case there isn’t.
@MG, I think bravery in this sense is in opening up about something private. Which I don’t think has anything to do with shame. But when you go public with something like this you open yourself to scrutiny. Scrutiny you might prefer to avoid but don’t so that you might help.

I think your analysis of bravery is a bit skewed. Being brave implies there are difficulties and obstacles along the way. She already touched upon how mental illness is a bit of a hush hush topic Iin Britain where you sort of deal with it and don’t speak of it. So in that sense, yes she is brave that despite being brought up in a culture that she has implied it is abit uncomfortable to speak up about it, she spoke about her mental illness.

i LOOOOOVE her!!! I have no idea if she is a nice person in real life, etc [ie, she keeps her private life separate from her professional life, for the most part, and I love that], but i don’t even care-her public persona is just that: she’s an old-school ‘movie star’ type….she’s got some talent, charisma and charm…..I always enjoy her on screen.

She looks better than most NORMAL 43-yo women! Why is it that if she’s not face-lifted and lipo-sucked half to death than we’re adding 10 yrs to these women’s age? Because we’re used to seeing Cam Diaz prancing around in micro-minis and all the Real Housewives going on 50 having the facial tightness of a 20-yo.
I have an ex-boss who looks like Catherine – not in terms of beauty but in terms of looking older than her age. She like CZJ (just in my opinion) just look ‘hard’. Whether it’s personality karma on their faces I couldn’t possible comment.

I kind of don’t buy that she actually is bi-polar either. She had a reputation as a litigious, gold digging, bitchy, semi-talented woman. She cops to being bi-polar and all that goes away. Now she’s “brave” and everyone is rooting for her. I’m not saying she’s not bi-polar, but I can equally see this as a savvy PR move.
She has been lying about her age for years, so how can Jennifer Aniston looks wayyyy younger but yet in years she is older, the same goes for Naomi watts.
How can you believe that Renee Zelweger is older than her? As well, remember the white house check embarassment which clearly stated she was 10 years older….

She doesn’t look massively disimilar to when she was in ‘Darling Buds’ here in the UK back in the early 1990s. She was in her early 20s then.
And in the UK, many people still use the old name for BiPolar, which is ‘manic depressive’ and it does still have a stigma attached to it sadly, so I can understand her position.
… and I say all this in defence despite the fact that I don’t like her. Don’t know why, just don’t.
She’s in her 40’s, but she’s not 50 yet. One of her first famous role was in a 1990 french film “Les 1001 nuits”, in which she clearly has a 20 years old girl’s baby face.
Don’t forget that living with a man 25 years older than you doesn’t help you look young.
She constantly has to deal with opposite goals : she has to be competitive in the movie market, but she may not want to have her husband look like her father… so maybe she doesn’t dress ou make up like a 45 years old woman could do. She’s wearing very classic or old fashioned clothes, compared to Cate Blanchett for example.
