The last time we reported on Teen Mom 2’s Jenelle Evans, she was pregnant and planning to divorce her husband of a whole six weeks, having filed six assault charges against him. After that, Jenelle and her estranged husband, convicted felon Courtland Rogers, both went on public webcam rants against each other, both while shacking up with other people. It was ridiculous and I gave up covering the story at that point – but more happened! Jenelle then live-tweeted her miscarriage, to borrow a phrase from Michael K.
So Jenelle, 21, is incredibly messed up, she’s bipolar and off her meds and she’s sharing all her constant drama online. According to The NY Post, MTV may cancel Teen Mom 2 because Jenelle has become such a liability:
MTV appears to be pulling the plug on “Teen Mom 2.”
The controversial documentary series, which follows the adult lives of four women who became pregnant in high school, is shutting down production, multiple sources tell The Post.
The decision to end the show follows several months of erratic, headline-grabbing behavior by loose-cannon star Jenelle Evans.
Since Thanksgiving, Evans has become pregnant again, got married, lost her baby and publicly demanded a divorce.
“You f – – king leave out of town and I might be having a miscarriage?! F – – k U, U f – – king piece of sh – t,” she tweeted to her husband, Courtland Rogers, last week.
Evans, 21, also shared what appeared to be disturbing, play-by-play updates of her seven-week pregnancy ending.“And this is the end, I think,” she shared with 632,800 followers Friday. “Feel light headed.”
Hours later, Evans tweeted that she was with her ex-fiance, Gary Head, at a North Carolina bar.
Insiders say producers are concerned the attention-seeking reality star has become a liability for the show, which tries to characterize itself as a cautionary tale about the hardships of too-young motherhood.
MTV, once unafraid to push the limits of taste and exploitation, appears to be more protective of the image its programs project than in the past.
Last week, Oxygen abruptly scrapped “All My Babies’ Mamas” — which documented the relationships between rapper Shawty Lo and the 10 mothers of his 11 children — after charges the show projected a negative stereotype.
“Teen Mom” producers, still reeling from bad press over cast member Amber Portwood, who was jailed last year on drug charges, have been unable to tone down Evans’ out-of-control antics.
Since first appearing on MTV, Evans has been arrested seven times on charges including breaking and entering, assault, violation of probation and possession of drugs.
In response to this story, MTV has issued a statement that no decision has been made yet, which sounds to me like they’re just covering their asses. “No decision has been made yet regarding a fifth season of Teen Mom 2. But the network is planning to air the fourth season this year and will announce the premiere date soon.” The fourth season has already been taped, so it would be a while until they needed to tape another one anyway.
Here’s the thing – MTV has several related shows in this “Teen Mom” family. The original Teen Mom has wrapped, but there’s also “Teen Mom 3” and “16 and Pregnant.” These shows are wildly popular, so it’s not like MTV is going to scrap them because one castmember is off the rails. They’re just going to wash their hands of her, wrap that show up, and start over with a new crop of girls. With two out of eight of the Teen Moms so troubled, you think they would learn at some point. What is it going to take?

I hope these MTV execs and producers all know they are going to burn in eternal hell for creating these teen monsters (and they did create them – after these shows became so popular, little girls were getting pregnant on purpose to become popular. While I understand your concern about glamorizing teen pregnancy, all publicly available data suggests the opposite is true. Rates of teen parenthood are down across the country, and it’s a downward trend that has been dropping for a decade.
I agree that Teen Mom is problematic, but I would argue that 16 and Pregnant — which takes a more documentary angle, and is much bleaker, much more honest, and doesn’t create “stars” — is actually a good depiction of the realities of teen pregnancy. Watching shows like that may actually dissuade young people from going down that path.
I agree with you. After all, who are the ones we remember? Amber and now we will remember Jenelle. As for me, each time I remember them and I feel that familiar twist in my gut, it will remind me to pray for their little ones.
MTV execs are only giving the youth of this country what they want– they are hardly the only ones when I look at how some people parent these days. Everyone is about “being who you are” and that you are a “special unique snowflake”, and no one is talking about what is plain RIGHT and WRONG.
We need to bring back LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE!!!

I was just going to post that although I try to stay away from Teen Mom news and posts, I found myself reading this one, like a scab you pick, and you know it’s bad for you but you can’t stop (sorry for the gross analogy). My husband and I are unable to have children after many years of trying, and miscarriages, etc. . .I don’t know that we’d be “the best parents ever” but we would surely be better than this trash. Yet people like this can pop out kids at a moment’s notice, and I can’t have any. I don’t want to sound bitter and jealous and angry, but in this respect I am, very much so. Life doesn’t seem fair sometimes.

It’s ridiculously unfair that someone who so readily sqanders their opportunities seems to have all the luck in the world. But there are so many families out there who are hurting.
Thanks for the words of support. LOL, Belle Epoch, at sounding mature and Zen. Believe me, I only reached a point of semi-acceptance after years of throwing crying and screaming fits (albeit in the privacy of my own home when nobody was around to witness them) every time a friend who always said she didn’t even *want* kids called to share the good news that she was pregnant. And you wouldn’t want to have heard me after a “friend” told me my husband I were so “lucky” to be able to get a good night’s sleep, since she kept being woken up by her baby.
In any case, you reach a point where you have to stop feeling so bitter about other people’s seeming ease at having kids. But I still maintain the Teen Moms shouldn’t be a thing – not backing down from that one :).
Nope, life is not fair. Instead of saying “Why me?” say “Why not” it keeps you humble.

I was lucky to be able to have biological children, but we are also helping to raise my niece, the child of my husband’s sister, who had her daughter a few days after turning 16. She has little interest in the child and would rather run around and use drugs and disappear for weeks on end and be wildly immature than be a mother.
I often think of people like you who deserve sweet little girls like her daughter and think how unfair it is that she can have babies but doesn’t appreciate them.
I hope you’re able to form a family that gives you enormous happiness and makes you feel complete, however you choose to do that.

It really sucks to be taking all kinds of meds & trying so hard, while at the same time seeing young women like this who get pregnant like it’s nothing. Very frustrating. I don’t know. The show itself definitely doesn’t glorify being a teen mother, it looks horrible. BUT I agree that the whole getting breast implants and posing for bikini ops a la Farrah is not right. To be honest though, the two that stick out most for me as being ‘famous’ frm the shows are Amber and Jenelle, and both for being drug addict/suicididal/in prison/not allowed near their kid DRAMA. To me, I don’t see the appeal in such a life. But I’m 22, so 6 years older than any potential 16 and Pregnant cast members, so maybe to them the lifestyle looks appealing? I hope not.

“Cautionary tale”? All you have to do is look around High School and see the girls that get pregnant and have to drop out. Or all I had to do was look at my mom who was 16 when she had me. I mean seriously, the last place to have “cautionary tales” is MTV.
Girls don’t HAVE to drop out if they get pregnant in hs. Yes, it is hard & they may well have to take SOME time off, but mom’s who finish HS have a MUCH better chance of providing for themselves & their children

I had a friend who got pregnant at 16. We went to a Catholic high school that was just full of nuns. Believe me, I was disgusted at how they tried everything they could to get my friend to leave school, but she absolutely refused. She fought them for two years and won. And now she has a master’s degree and a great job and two other awesome kids.

I don’t watch the show, but I did follow this on all the tabloid websites and I think she faked her pregnancy. Tweeting while miscarrying? In the real world, people don’t make a joke out of miscarrying a baby. At least no sane person would.
so, most people wouldn’t… but I’ve seen someone I went to high school with (and I’m in my thirties, mind you) Facebook her positive pregnancy test and then three weeks later “live-post” her miscarriage… I can’t imagine, but if a woman at my age could make a stupid decision like that, I’m not shocked that Jenelle would.
What I don’t understand is why they keep dragging out the Teen Mom shows. We don’t need years of these girls’ lives – they’re in their 20’s now. I understand wanting to show a little more past the initial pregnancy and birth – but cut it off after a season or two. Catelynn & Tyler (Season 1) gave their baby up for adoption, and were still on the show for three more seasons – they didn’t even have a baby, so why are they on Teen Mom? Same with this piece of trash – she doesn’t even see or care for her child – so why is she being featured? Leah Messer is on her second marriage and third baby – great role model there.
Basically, I could understand doing a follow-up season a couple of years later – but this Teen Mom show is pointless, because none of these girls are actually facing true teen mom hardships – they do get money from the show, which I guarantee is more than they’d make working. Only a couple of them even bother with the pretense of holding down real jobs.
Why are shows like this popular?
Is it the ‘entertainment’ factor? It’s one thing to watch delusional 40/50 something women spout nonsense about their failed marriages and careers while attempting to claw eachother’s eyes out. Shows like this though…? Watching a teen fail her life and create a vicious cycle for her children?
Is it people are sheltered so it’s shocking to see these girls live their lives like this (like one of the writers of this site suggested)? Because…unlike other brands I don’t get this. I think everyone can do the math on what lower class teenagers who are pregnant will act and behave, the fact this girl got a miscarriage from this is sad but expected.

Apparantly, her ex Gary was with her during the “miscarriage” and his tweets were bizarre – he kept making it out to be a horror movie of some sort – “OMG! There’s so much blood!” Stuff like that. It makes me think that she was never actually pregnant and just got her period again or something – and of course, a man like Gary can’t deal with vagina blood and freaked out. But if she intentionally faked a miscarriage, that probably will put her in a special circle of Hell or something – trivializing something that so many women suffer through.
Tried watching the live rants, got about…maybe a minute and a half in and I just couldn’t anymore. He’s as dumb as a post, and that broad making kissy faces at the camera made me want to punch her :/

I’ve never seen the show, and I don’t know her (obviously) but in the sense that she is obviously suffering — from addiction, from abuse, as a result of this miscarriage — my heart goes out to her. More so to her innocent child, who is the real victim here.

I actually think it’s shows like 16 and Pregnant that are contributing to the decline. I don’t know about Teen Mom, which seems to have a very different format that creates so-called “stars,” but 16 and Pregnant, which I have watched many times, very realistically and bleakly portrays the struggles and sacrifices of teen parenthood. It is not glamorized or sugarcoated. I like the show a lot.
I was a teen parent too, and it was incredibly difficult. I think watching depictions that are honest in terms of how lonely and heartbreaking teen parenthood truly is may actually encourage teenagers to avoid that path. In any case, it’s a trend that has been getting markedly better in recent years!
I read this article yesterday and honestly I was shocked it has taken MTV this long to reach this decision.
I was really invested in the girls on Teen Mom but have weaved out in the later seasons. I have known my fair share of Jenelles in my life, one is my aunt and the other a newly acquired SIL. Sadly, neither has it gets better ending.
Each has lived out a similar life to Jenelle and even paralleling each other in having a 2nd child to drag through the mud shortly after the first. While thier stories are all a little different the one thing they all have in common are enablers. For my aunt and SIL it is thier families excusing thier shortcomings in life and as parents with a “someday they will get it together,” attitudes. For jenelle it is infamy, fans and being tabloid fodder. In the last few months there have been stories popping up all over, i have no doubt she is making money on some of these so called exclusives.
Taking Jenelle off of tv is the smartest thing mtv has thought of in awhile. Without a platform she can just fade away and deal with her issues privately.

for the 2 girls (Amber, Jenelle) with all the problems – moms like that exist unfortunately (teen or otherwise).
however, by being on TV, at least, for the sake of the poor kids involved, it’s KNOWN that the mom is unfit. and alternative arrangements are forced to be made.
in more cases, it’s so behind closed doors… that there is no help for that kid and/or the kid is left in the unfit mom’s custody.
