On Saturday evening, Jennifer Lawrence was honored at Santa Barbara film festival with the “Outstanding Performance of the Year Award” for her performances in last year’s Silver Linings Playbook as well as The Hunger Games, which is a nice touch since the latter isn’t getting any love from awards season. I figured it would at least qualify for a costume design Oscar nomination since Mirror Mirror is apparently worthy. Oh well. But this award from Santa Barbara is a pretty big deal since past winners include Heath Ledger, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Viola Davis, and Charlize Theron. Go, JLaw!
In the fashion stakes, however, Jennifer doesn’t score nearly as often as with her acting gigs. Here, she wore a black-and-blue Stella McCartney jumpsuit that actually isn’t that bad for Stella McCartney, who usually designs clothes that are terribly unflattering to the female body (illusion dresses be damned). Here, Jennifer’s body looks pretty great, and it’s already been proven that she tends to look good in midnight blue. I do like the corset-like waist on this jumpsuit, and the asymmetrical cut around the bust is a nice workaround for JLaw’s self-admitted lopsided boobs (just kidding, really — lots of women are slightly lopsided, and I never even noticed she was off-balance, so to speak). So this look isn’t half bad considering it’s Stella, and a strapless jumpsuit is a nice choice for a less-formal awards show.
Where Jennifer really scores though is with her hair and makeup. Her hair is styled in a very beachy manner, and it’s loose without being too messy. The makeup is also quite flattering too — she’s positively glowing. Most of the time, JLaw’s makeup is rather severe, so whoever did the deed for this show needs to be around for the Oscars as well.

The stiffness of the taffeta (or whatever stiff silk has been used) is perfect for the structure of the top, but I can’t imagine having that around my hips and legs. Not comfy and it would be hot, too. She pulls it off though, she’s got a great body that’s toned and healthy. The flat hair is a mystery considering some pro did this to her, as is the makeup, both of which make her look tired, like she showed up to this event after a long day of work. Still, I’d kill to look like this at my worst.
Serious question – why is it that arm size makes such a difference to how a woman’s body size is percieved? To me the only difference between Jennifer Lawrence’s and Keira Knightley’s bodies is that Jennifer has much bigger arms, yet Jen is called “healthy, curvy” etc but Keira is always “skinny”???

I don’t usually care for Stella’s designs, but that outfit is fierce on JLaw.
Not a fan of the patchy colors but at least it fits nicely. For a Stella McCartney design it could have been so much worse. Love the hair and makeup. Best so far this season.

Jennifer looks ok, considering …well, not really, I still think the design is FUG but that’s no fault of hers, she’s doing the best with it that she can.

I really dislike her hair and make up here. Those bangs she is growing out need to be styled differently IMO (could look way better if not parted in the middle) and her eye make up looks like she is wearing it since hours or maybe since yesterday.

Her make up looks awful and dirty. Like it was done 2 days ago and she’s been sleeping in it. She looks nearly unrecognizable and almost as if she’s done something to her face. That is how bad her make up looks.
She looks as good as anyone can in a Stella McCartney “design”. McCarney is the most over-rated, tasteless and just plain tacky designer out there. A jumpsuit – with color blocked stripes no less . . . weeping in my coffee.

Remember that awful mess Kate Hudson wore to the Oscars when she was nominated for Almost Famous? UGH! JLaw needs a new hair stylist or do. I don’t think she cares too much about this stuff though. She’s got the acting chops and knows it. She’s not a waif and doesn’t intend on becoming one for Hollywood and I applaud her for that. Whoever said she’s fat is an idiot. She’s probably a size 4. She’s 5’9″ afterall.

The pantsuit: Sigh. I mean, the colour is great, but wtf with the bodice? Again, nice idea overall, the execution is terrible in that bodice area. Why don’t designers like boobs? It does look like a grade-school jobby. And the hair and makeup…nice idea, but I think they could oomphed it up a bit…like maybe keep the hair down, but maybe style it a wee bit more and maybe a slightly darker shade of lipstick.
Jennifer has the body type where clean lines and spare but classy and elegant styles work for her. This folded fabic crap is too juvenile. Also, she does look better when she’s NOT glammed up so much, but eeehhhh, they could done a bit better. Or I don’t know, maybe she did it all herself and this kind of stuff isn’t her strong suit, which is fair enough. I mean, she looks great, but I just think it could have been a bit … better.
