I think Naomi Watts has become one of the most consistently well-dressed women on the red carpet. She wasn’t always – I remember when she first came on the scene in the early aughts, her style could be hit-or-miss. While she still occasionally “phones it in” or errs on the side of wearing too many neutrals, Naomi’s style just gets better and better. It’s really only the neutral thing that bugs me personally – I wish she would stop wearing so many beiges, sand colors, and off-whites (see: the blah dress she wore at the SAGs, at the end of the post). Sometimes they look great, sometimes they was her out but she simply does that neutral color scheme too often. But as I discovered with Naomi’s People Magazine interview, she doesn’t care for one bold color that shows up on every carpet:
We didn’t think there was a single thing Naomi Watts couldn’t wear, but the Academy Award-nominated actress, 44, informs us that there’s just one shade she won’t sport.
“I won’t wear red on the red carpet … I just never think blondes look good in red.” Watts told PEOPLE Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo’s 25 Most Powerful Stylists luncheon in West Hollywood. “I think it’s good for dark haired girls and dark skinned girls. But for some reason, I always feel like I look trashy in it.”
So trashy, in fact, that she believes “blondes plus red, to me, looks a little bit porno, and I’ve never felt quite right.”
How to explain that “near red moment” in Zac Posen, then?
“Because it had a busy print, it had different colors,” she says. “It wasn’t fire engine red. At the [Golden] Globes I wore burgundy or plum. That wasn’t red. If you put blue in it, I can wear it, but orange does not look good with my skin.”
I included a photo of the “red” Zac Posen for the header of this post – I would call that a burgundy or a wine-red, not really lipstick red or an orange-red, like Naomi said. I agree that she probably shouldn’t wear orange-reds – that’s fine with me. I don’t necessarily think she would look “p0rn0” (although I think it’s funny that her association with a blonde in red is “p0rn”), but it probably wouldn’t suit her. And I agree, darker women can pull off reds and bold jewel tones better than most blondes. But I still think Naomi is too cautious about her colors – she would be perfectly capable of finding a balance between not being overwhelmed by a too-bold color and not being washed out by a too-bland neutral. Now… she looks fantastic in metallics and greys, doesn’t she? Maybe that’s the happy-medium.
Additionally, Naomi gave another interview where she discussed Botox and whether she would ever jack her face. It’s funny because she’s BFFs with Nicole Kidman. Naomi said:
“Never say never—and I certainly don’t judge anyone who does it. But most of the characters I play are going through some kind of emotional turmoil, so my job requires me to have expression…. If my face was froze, what right do I have to play that part? All the women who haven’t anything to their faces are still able to play great roles. And some of the ones who have done something have messed it up—they look freakish. Anyway, for me it’s about playing women with rich lives—and the longer the life, the deeper the wrinkles.”
Oooooh, did Naomi just shade the hell out of Nicole? “And some of the ones who have done something have messed it up—they look freakish”!!! It certainly sounds like she’s “judging”. And bless her for that – Nicole needs to be shaded (often) for the terrible things she’s done to her once-beautiful face.

I’ve always thought reds on blondes didn’t look that great. I feel validated now.
Yeah, I kind of agree. Jennifer Lawrence on the other hand wore this red Calvin Klein dress to the Oscars 2012 and it looked great on her. Depends probably on the woman and her attitude or charisma.
Agreed. Jennifer was absolutely stunning in that dress.
I agree Jennifer looked amazing in that dress, but it was more orange red than true red – plus she is nowhere near as blonde as Naomi. A dirty blonde can get away with a lot more color wise than a bleached, white blonde. I think Naomi is pale enough that she makes it look classy, not trashy, but it very hard to do.
I think blondes look great in red. Not all, obviously, but generally.
Depends on the red, depends on the blonde. I would agree with Naomi’s coloring.
I don’t agree, but I understand her feeling that way. If I do shadow 99% of the time I do a nude lip, if I do a lip color (I love reds and most often do red lips) I stick to liner and mascara. I feel like a clown of I have lips and eyes done. I don’t think others look bad, but I’m uncomfortable. So, yeah, I get her hang up!
Me too! I usually do my eyes very dark, and leave the lips nude. Otherwise it looks too overdone.
Yes, Naomi, Nicole’s face did not move in that Hemingway movie she recently did. I am with ya! It ruined the movie, so distracting. You are great on the other hand, saw the Impossible!
It depends entirely on the skin undertone colors. Yellow-skin undertones look good in orange-reds. Pink based skin is harder to suit in reds. Blue-reds are sometimes ok. Skin color is more important than hair color in determining if, or which shades, of red work on a person.
Gosh she looked KILLER in that one shoulder dress at the vanity fair party. LOVE. And I’ll say it: she is much prettier and more talented than Nicole.
Ugh, what’s with the constant pitting of women against each other? Can’t we ever compliment a female performer without insulting another?
Nicole’s talent is often underestimated. Her talent is why she still gets acting jobs although she messed so much with her face.
A word, Naomi. I am blonde and for those that remember the 80’s, my colors are “winter” — blondes rock red if it’s the right red. You gotta own your colors. I’d take a killer red over “oxblood” any fool day.
I think she’s had Botox or something done. She’s 44!
I agree.
I agree. Also Botox does not freeze your face if it is done right. I used it to get rid of some very deep forehead wrinkles, and I am known for my expressive face. Seriously, I would have made a great silent film star.
I’m not so sure. In close-up, candid shots you can see some of the lines in her face. In those she just looks like a 44 that takes good care of herself.
She may not do Botox but there are plenty of laser and other facial treatments.
I absolutely love her. I finally got around to seeing The Impossible. Wow. She was outstanding. It really put into perspective how much of a popularity contest the Oscars really are.
Without wading into the red lipstick debate, I think she is one of the lucky few who can get away with a minimal makeup/no makeup look — not for the red carpet, obviously, but just day-to-day, casual.
I’ve seen others in her age group (no, not Nicole) who either bury their face under layers of heavy stage make up &/or rely on injections and fillers and more invasive procedures.
Re: the heavy makeup — best example of this is Gwen Stefani. Probably wears it to bed, LOL!!
I love red and feel so relieved I can wesa it “safely” being a brunette.
My personal pet hate is pink- over girlish colour for me.
between her strong sexuality (well displayed in ‘Mulholland Drive’ me-ow!)
and his strong, sensual masculinity (Sabertooth, yum!) …i bet they make fantastic, jungle-love together.
oh-weee,oh-weee,oh! 😛
ahhahaha take that Nicole -since you deserve it- oh and I don’t think they’re bff anymore.
Also Naomi may be right about blondes in red.
Naomi Watts is lovely & seems real & I like her very much. I suspect by “porno” she means obviously or overtly sexualized. I get that about a blonde in red. I kinda hope she doesn’t mean trashy or bad, though, because as a female who occasionally watches porn, I can tell you from first hand knowledge it’s one of the ways she started out. I’m sure there are “people” all over removing her name from anything & removing links, but the vids are still floating around, albeit w/o her name attached.
I thought that was really bitchy of her, having Nicole as her friend and how she helped her get her start at Hollywood when no one knew who she was (or so I read somewhere).
It is true that Botox ruins people’s faces after a couple of years of usage. It ruins the muscles and facial features.
Having said that, you should not make a friend of yours feel embarrssed.
Are you listening Swifty?
Naomi Watts recently chatted about how Nicole kept her motivated when times were tough back in the 90s. “She kept saying, ‘It’s just going to take one thing, one thing, Nay, and you know, if you’re in a hit film (you land a bearding contract for a rich gay Hollywood star) … then everything changes!”
