Quick question: apart from some brief period in the mid to late 80s when Desperately Seeking Susan was still de rigueur, have you ever worn socks with heels that weren’t booties? I’m not talking about knee high hose, tights, socks that could pass as hose under slacks, or thin socks on laundry day when you needed to dress up and forgot about it, I’m talking legit socks with pumps. You’ve never done that, right? Only Sarah Jessica Parker is trying to make it happen – allegedly! She’s said to be designing socks to be worn with heels. Since she is the next Rob Kardashian.
The 47 year-old “Sex and the City” star started a trend when she wore the quirky combo on the hit HBO show back in the 90s. Now she’s determined to revive the fad with her own line of stylish socks, but pals predict it will be a bust.
“Sarah might have been one of the most imitated and admired style icons 10 years ago, but that’s not the case anymore,” an insider tells The Enquirer.
“And this socks-with-heels obsession will only damage what fashion credibility she has left…”
“Now she wants to make one more push to see if she can turn it into a craze,” said the source.
“She’s already designing her own line of socks, and she’s even got her 3-year-old twin girls Tabitha and Loretta helping. It’s great for mommy-daughter bonding, but Sarah really needs to put this sock business to rest.”
[From The National Enquirer, print edition, April 8, 2013]
I didn’t think this was a trend at all, but I went to google it and one of the suggested search phrases was “socks with heels trend.” That lead me to an article in Elle from last November: “Shop the Trend: Socks With Heels.” The trend was from the runway and apart from some pumps with lacy socks (from Dolce & Gabbana) all of the shoes were clunky heels, wedges or booties, so I can see how this might look cute if you had the right shoe for it. I doubt that people would buy socks specifically designed to wear with heels though, it’s just too small a market.
Let’s face it, judging from Sarah Jessica Parker’s interpretation of this trend this isn’t going to catch on. Those are some fug sandals with socks. Her character on SATC may have been a fashionista, but the real SJP is not. I have to say her daughters are adorable though! They’re growing up so fast.

It looks like she can’t really walk in those shoes.
What’s with the seconnd pic after the article; did she do that on purpose or did her shoe really come off.
SJP I’m trying so hard to like you but I just can’t.
I didn’t even *see* that, Ouch, that looks painful! I’m shocked she didn’t sprain an ankle. Maybe she just put the foot down wrong, for some reason. Or from wearing socks with them, making the shoes slip back & forth on her feet as she walks.
In the pic with her son she looks like she’s about to roll over her ankle. I can’t with her anymore. Loved SATC but she just annoys me at this point.
I wish she would gain a few pounds, cut a few inches off her hair and lighten it a little.
And yes, she is not doing this trend any good by wearing what she’s wearing in these pictures.
She is not really a style icon. Carrie Bradshaw was, but SJP doesn’t live up to it.
I agree. For the most part, the SATC stylist was amazing. Especially after the first season or two. Carrie Bradshaw was a style icon.
Oh god just no.
No to the socks..
but I just wanted to say how adorable her daughters are.
I think she looks cute. But she is probably the only person who could pull this off.
She would look cute if she was 12. She is not pulling this off, she looks ridicules and uncomfortable in those shoes.
I agree, but I’m probably blinded by the fact she’s SJP and she can pretty much do no wrong in my mind. I’m sure if I saw this on some random chick I’d laugh in my mind about it.
I’ve never gone in for the trends SJP starts (those mammoth, scary, shoulder-eating flowers, anyone?), so I’m the wrong audience here, but heels and socks will never look right to me.
I love the expressions on the twins’ faces, especially in the earlier photo — they seem so over her :).
It’s like they want us to wear socks in heels for years but it’s just not happening.
I have to confess that I think this is kinda cute. Maybe more for the younger kids, though.. I am a sock knitter and the crazier the colors and pattern, the better:) Show off those socks!
Fun! Do you sell them or have a site?
Oh, no – just recreational:)
Wow, and here am I thinking that we’d reached the pinnacle of sock design a few thousand years ago?
Does Rob Kardashian know he has competition?
I totally missed whatever story talks about Rob K/socks. What happened with him & socks?
I think sock and heels are cute if you have long skinny legs. otherwise it doesn’t work in my mind.
Open shoes and socks ? God, no, just say no.
Somewhere some poor soul once thought parachute pants & spandex body suits would be a major fashion statement… Ahhhh NO, learn from others mistakes! Something’s just should not be….socks & heels is in that group,
Can you imagine what a better place this world would be if everyone could just ‘learn from other’s mistakes’? We wouldn’t have had half the trends, or Kim Kardashian & the Cracken.
So very true Hakura!! 🙂
In the 80’s when I was of age to go clubbing, we wore thin ruffled bobby socks with pointed toe pumps and mini-skirts or tube dresses. That was a fad that didn’t last too long, but they do not need to bring that fad back. Even though I did it back in the day and thought it was cool, it’s not cute for a grown woman to wear bobby socks. It looks like her foot turned to the side in the third pic. This is one of the dangers of wearing socks with heels.
P.S. James Wilkie needs a haircut.
We’ve had celebrities ‘designing’ underwear, swimsuits, even entire fashion lines (ahem Victoria Beckham). Now we have one ‘designing’…. socks? What’s next? Some unemployed celeb ‘designing’ sanitary towels?
Wasn’t SJP just recently trying to reinvent herself as someone who didn’t care that much about fashion?
If she was, she totally succeeded.
When I think of socks with heels, I think of “Footloose”. I’m just glad that, when that was the trend, I was young enough that my mother wouldn’t let me wear heels out of the house. The “best” I could do was flats with socks. *sigh*. I makes the L.A. Gear high tops with colorful, layered socks, worn with Guess jeans tucked in, seem downright dignified!
Ye old time movies.. Girl dancers in the chorus line rehearsal .. 1950’s swing dancers.. 2009 noticed a trend that’s been popping up everywhere … wearing your sky-high heels with black ankle socks.
The socks and heels trend is definitely a look that’s been in and out for a while, showing up everywhere from runways to the streets. It was most recently popularized when Burberry Prorsum sent the look down the runway at their Spring 2009 and Spring 2008 RTW shows.
Maybe she’s a fan this look and thinks it can work well when worn carefully. When worn with a chic bandage skirt and loose top, ankle socks and heels can look edgy and fashion-forward. It can also, however, go VERY wrong, so the key making this trend work is to always stick to black socks. Avoid colors/white at all costs!
Also, the height of the socks matters – they should hit just above the ankle, with mini skirts.. making bare legs look long and lean. If the socks are pulled up a little too high they shorten the leg line for a less flattering look. With old bag lady garb.. battered jeans, winter clothing, grannie sandal heels.. ridiculous..
You kind of have to have that kischy vibe about you. Open back clogs with socks are kind of a thing, I’m not sure what special engineering goes into high heeled sock design, but whatever.
She’s hardly starting a trend they were all over the place at the Milan fashion show last fall. But those were classy, hers look low budget sadly
I love her daughters’ coats!!
It hurts me when I read so many mean remarks directed toward SJP. She is one of the few big stars that I find refreshingly inoffensive.
Didn’t she just claim that “cheap heels” ruined her feet? Soooo, whats the point of the socks? Make up ur mind SJP!
No NO NOOO I won’t have it, NO SOCKS WITH HEELS!! *drags SJP to the door… shoves her out*
She looks like a refugee from Romania.
1) She is too wealthy and too old to be pursuing this look. She isn’t at the Marlene Dietrich “hide behind the locked door” remove yet, but show some dignity.
2) You boinked her son. Would Jackie O do socks and heels? I think not.
3) The commenter who said “Looks like Romania,” hit it on the head. A few decades ago, Prada went for a whole season of the socks and heels thing. It still pops up in Vogue, on occasion. The whole “vibe” and cultural reference goes back to Russia pre-$$$$ when women were forced to wear socks with cheap plastic shoes from China because stockings weren’t available.
4) It also draws on that whole “Kinder” Courtney Love energy about underaged girls trying to be grown-up…again, something I would hardly think SJP would want to channel.
5) When your nanny looks better than you do, it’s time to rethink things, honey.
someone make her stop. pleeeeeease.
Do it all the time – a nice navy or blush pink silk knee high pushed down loosely with heels looks super chic. Think more Prada from several seasons ago as opposed to footloose.
Those little girls are adorable, I know she used a surrogate but they look just like her.
As for the socks I say no for most people but SJP is quirky enough to get away with it.
People give her a hard time, but I think she’s cute. I like her style and that she is confident while not being a typical WASPy type beauty.
I’m a big fan of socks (usually around knee-high) worn with Mary Jane heels, that whole schoolgirl thing. I think that’s a really cute look. Otherwise…not so much.
Aw bless her heart. I still love me some SJP, but I will NEVER wear socks with heels.
I wear lace socks with heels. No judgement.
