Confession time, I don’t like the Great Gatsby. Seriously. I get it, I do, I get the point, but this whole thing is so ‘meh’ to me I cannot even tell you. I don’t get the release date either, this is going to get murdered by Iron Man and then re-murdered by Star Trek.
Maybe they know it won’t do so well. So, they put it out around the time two bigger movies are coming out so when it doesn’t do well at the box office they could say it was because of the stiff competition, where as if they had released it during a month with less competition and it failed the movie would just seem like a flop instead of just being released at the wrong time.
Anyway, I’m going to see it. I liked the book and Leo gives good performances. I just wish they’d gotten someone else to play Daisy.
Me, too, @jinni. I always think of Daisy as having this wide-eyed joy for life that bubbles up inside of her and just comes rushing out, a girlishness about her. I like Carey Mulligan but she seems too somber, too old in her heart in this role, just from what I’ve seen. Her eyes look so sad and world weary. I don’t see Daisy’s flirty charm in the previews, but maybe I should wait until I see it all before I make up my mind.
I didn’t like the GG when I had to read it in HS, didn’t like the RR/MF movie, and I don’t have any urge to see this version.
…and yet you’re commenting here. Why?
@Anonny: And yet you’re commenting to me.
You do understand you’re on a gossip site called Celebitchy, correct?
Though I do feel special that you replied to me and not anyone else who commented that they weren’t overwhelmed by the book or really interested in this version.
They’ve moved the release date twice at this point-which is usually not a good sign. I think if they moved it again, it would get panned even before a release date.
Did anyone else hear the notes of Beyonce singing ‘back to black’? UGH. Awful.
I hated it when I had to read it in school too.
Hated the book but want to see the film bc I like Baz.
I don’t like the book either. Plus I don’t think I understood the point of the story. It just flew me over me for some reason.
I watched this earlier and today and no I am so excited! The Great Gatsby is my favorite book and the first preview left me worried because i was already questioning casting Carey Mulligan. Not because of her talent but because she looks to young to have had a past with this cast of characters.
I wish they had cast someone else as Daisy too. For me it’s that she looks too young and too old at the same time. I can’t really explain it. Maybe she’ll change my mind with her performance, but just by looking at her there doesn’t seem to me to be anything about her that would lead anyone to think that a man would do all that Gatsby did to be with her.
For me the way I always read Daisy was that she was larger than life. The center of conversation, who held the adoration of every man who met her. Fitzgerald painted such a picture of her (faux) warmth and intimate feeling she gave when talking to people; acting as if whoever she was speaking with was the most important person in the room AND her voice like the sound of money. Mulligan gives me shades of none of that and I believe that was why I was and am so nervous about her casting.
Dittto. I’m worried about her (non-existent) chemistry with Leo, to be honest…
Leo acts like in a Scorsese movie,Carey and Joel Edgerton looks interesting but i dislike Baz Lurhman’s style( all in clothes and decors)
remember when blake lively was considered for the role of Daisy? 🙂
She wasn’t considered, per se, girlfriend just has the best pr team in the world. In the end though, that’s got to be embarrassing to have all these director’s and producers act nice to you and butter you up, knowing that you’re a crap actress and they’re not going to hire you, but you still go around like you’re the female version of Daniel Day Lewis (who could’ve been in three films a year if he wanted)….as Meryl Streep.
I just couldn’t imagine going to what is essentially work ie the red carpets, and act like I’m the biggest thing there. I wonder how she acts when she really comes up against the talented people….has she even gone to the golden globes, the Oscars, BAFTAS, or any other important awards ceremony like that?
That being said, I definitely like her a lot better, although she is a famewhore. Maybe it’s good she married someone who likes the attention as much as she does.
She was one of the actresses who auditioned. Her pr is always tossed out there, but they haven’t been able to work these alleged miracles for their other clients.
Directors and producers have the power to hire. They don’t have to act nice or “butter up” young actors, or hand out auditions like charity.
She has hardly gone around acting like she’s Streep or DDL. She’s always come off as appreciative bordering on awestruck of the people she’s worked with in her interviews.
The red carpet is a performance. If she convinced you that she thought she was the biggest deal walking the carpet, she did her job for whatever she was promoting and the designer she was wearing. According to her interviews, that’s not how she feels out there at all.
If she’s a “famewhore” then so is most of Hollywood. Her husband doesn’t even have a rep for hogging the spotlight, so I’m not sure where that came from.
The person you describe sound more like Daisy Buchanan than BL.
Oh my, yes! So ridiculous!
Given the over-the-topness 3D shizz going on, I don’t think Blake would have been too bad for this. Her body isn’t 1920’s flapper girl, but she would have looked good in the short skirts.
I love Mulligan but I don’t think she has the sexy care free thing going here. She looks like a tourtured soul in these clips, not the superficial socialite.
My first guess for the liars was actually Leann Rimes…oh celebitchy is gifting me with newfound skills every single day.
The Great Gatsby trailer looks amazing…a lot better than the first one. I actually want to see it, and not just based on my crush.
Here’s a question: Leonardo count as a shamef*ck? I mean there’s nothing really to suggest that he’s an a-hole, just a commitment phobic mama’s boy who picks the most boring, generic girlfriends a la Clooney. But he might be mine. I don’t know…I don’t think I’d be embarrassed to admit it, unless he came out as a misogynist or a racist or something else like that. Eh, who cares, in the end. He’s just something for my objectification..a la Titanic. For a while I thought it was Sean Penn, but even Sean Penn is just too much of an a-hold for me, despite his acting ability.
Good question Mr. Smurf. I think if you look too hard at his private life you could start to feel the shame. The modelizing is just cliched and painfully obvious at this point. He’s an odd case on acting ability too. A terrific actor sure, but he is still pretty much “Leo” in every role. If we are talking about the greatest (a Day Lewis successor one day) Christian Bale (who is about the same age as Leo) has probably come out ahead at this point. I admire Leo’s ability to choose projects more than his acting, but he is good.
Sean Penn couldn’t get it from me if I was dying and he was the cure.
I don’t know. I think he is a really good actor, who can disappear into his characters very well. I’ve only just started getting into him…I’ve only just started watching his movies, my dad bought a bunch of his Scorcesse collaborations.
What’s funny is that I saw Titanic when I was fourteen and I never became all fangirl about him. A lot of girls at school were…one girl watched Titanic every single time she got sick and had to stay home from school.
At this point, I hope he either pulls a Warren Beatty and finds someone who won’t put up with his crap, or he goes and lives with Kate Winslet (I mean this as a platonic friendship)- meaning give his time to probably the only woman that he really loves and respects besides his mom. I was looking at their interviews when they did Revolutionary Road (God that was a fantastic film), they seem to have a great love for each other- I can only hope I have that with a friend.
Their friendship really reminds me of my mom and her family. My dad’s side of the family isn’t really close (my dad’s dad lives thirty minutes away from us, passes our house every day on the way to work, and we never see him except three or four times a year-this year on his birthday he had “plans” with his girlfriend) and my mom talks to her siblings ALL the time. They know each other’s business…I hope I get like that with my siblings, I’m really worried for my younger sister.
But anyway, their friendship is just so genuine, I love it. You can tell they really love each other.
I actually wrote a one act play kind of based on their friendship. I’m expanding it into a full play, but basically it’s about these two people in their mid twenties who get married, after supposedly spending their entire university career hating one another. It’s the typical popular guy falls for the “nerd”/unloved girl after pulling her pigtails for a while. I just wrote one act, which focuses on their two mutual gay friends, who have received an email from Frank saying he’s marrying “his girl” ie flavor of the month a la leo, and so on.
The two boyfriends really stole the show…I didn’t think my play was really all that funny until we read it out loud in my college writing class.
Sorry for the long post…I am so BORED…spring break wasn’t all that fun. All I’ve been doing is stalking this site and babysitting my two siblings while my parents are at work.
Leo = HEck YEah! All kinds of dirty and wrong.
Sean = NO, I have to co-sign with Mia 4S because thats pretty much how I feel about him too.
I thought Lohan or Kardashian would be first on the liar’s list but I see they’ve nominated the queen of liars.
I can NOT wait for this movie! Every trailer is amazing and I love Leo in this.
Only God Forgives looks awesome. Don’t know what you’re thinking….
+1
It’s probably not the right site here for this trailer…
Isn’t Daisy a brunette in the book? Are they just going by Mia Farrows version to not confuse people?
Meh, Hollywood.
I re-read the book recently and it was confusing because Fitzgerald wrote that when she was young (at the time when she was with Gatsby) she had dark hair but her daughter was blond and later Daisy herself said that she looked like her – the same face, the same hair. Plus she was associated with the color white – she was described as angelic and delicate looks-wise – pale skin, white clothes, white house, white flowers so blond hair suit that better, visually.
Leo gave one of his best performances in BL’s Romeo and Juliet imo. Can’t wait to see if the magic is repeated.
I’ll watch it just to see the cool hair styles.
I think this is going to be a really interesting film. Luhrmann’s style is a great match for the over-the-top lifestyle the story is about.
“Is all this made entirely from your own imagination?” Nobody else could make a movie about that idea as well as Luhrmann can.
I know Luhrman sometimes gets a bit of stick for how melodramatic his films can be, but I really enjoy them. It’s a bit like wandering into someone else’s overactive imagination for a couple of hours.
Also; anyone got an ID on the Florence and the Machines song in the trailer?
The Florence and the Machine song is called Over The Love.
Agreed, Luhrman’s movies are all about escape and fantasy. I HATE anything resembling a musical, but Moulin Rouge is one of my favorite movies. R&J is a modern classic. I even enjoyed bits of Australia, at least for the visuals.
I completely agree – this film requires a colorful and imaginative director. Moulin Rouge is ridiculously over-the-top, but that’s what makes it so interesting and fun (and therefore one of my favorite movies from an artistic standpoint). Also the costumes in that movie – WOW. I am looking forward to seeing this if only because I think Luhrmann can truly bring The Great Gatsby to life in the way Fitzgerald imagined it. The book is so full of life and well written, there’s a lot for Luhrmann to work with. And, because I am a book worm and huge fan of Fitzgerald’s work. Can’t wait to see this.
Anyone checked out the track list for The Great Gatsby soundtrack?
http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/04/the-great-gatsby-soundtrack-features-new-jay-z-the-xx-florence-the-machine/
It looks amazing, Emile Sande is covering Beyonce’s Crazy In Love!!
But it’s not out until May, unfortunately.
Oh, and I unashamedly adore Australia. I don’t know what it is, but I freakin’ love that film 🙂
To PrettyLights who said:

You have perfectly expressed my sentiments on this film (and the book.) We should go together on Opening Night – I’ll buy the popcorn.
My early experiences with Luhrmann’s movies were me seeing the newspaper ads or the posters and thinking WTH? That’s what happened to me with both Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge. But once I actually saw the movies, I loved them. I also enjoyed more than just parts of Australia. Yeah, the story went on too long, but it was visually stunning. I had visited Australia a couple years before it came out, and seeing the movie really made me want to return.
So, I have learned not to judge his films by initial reactions. They have to be experienced.
J Eyre – Sounds good, count me in!
So oh yuk – they are not going to be using music from the 1920s. Modern wailing instead. I guess that will be popular. Too bad.
Screw the GG, I can’t wait for Finding Dory !
Gatsby looks promising. I’m not sold on Mulligan though – I like her, like her work, but not sure she fits the part. We’ll see. I’m sorry Ben Affleck turned down the Tom Buchanan role. Affleck isn’t the world’s best actor, but would have made a fantastic Tom imo. Looking forward to Tobey Maguire’s performance more than anything.
I loved the book, I will be checking this out, hope it does not disappoint.
Have you ever seen a movie as good as the book truthful? The think the closest I ever came to a book resembling a movie was P. Jackson’s LOTR. There was so much of the speech of Middle Earth in the movie, I thought it was fairly realistic. Pet Semetary was a scary movie to go along with a scary story, but there was still blatant deviation from the book. Even autobiographical movies add excessive or non-existant speech.
It’s rare, but there are some films that are better than the books they’re based on – The Right Stuff and The Unbearable Lightness of Being, just to name two.
But yes: 98% of the time, the book is better than the movie.
I would put Silence of the Lambs on the list of movies that were as good or better than the book. And the movie ending was much better than the book’s ending.
I liked the movie The Devil Wears Prada much better than the book. And I saw another within that last year I felt that way about but I have completely forgotten it. Otherwise I generally agree that book > movie.
I liked The Notebook, Dear John and dare I admit it? The last Breaking Dawn…. better than the books. I don’t really like any of those authors though, but I LOVE Nicholas Spark’s books turned into movies. Not the actual books really.
Yes to LOTR. Loved the books and was gobsmacked to see Jackson’s representation of Middle Earth onscreen and had to remember to breath. I’m sure I was wide-eyed at many spots especially in the second movie. It was pretty much exactly how I imagined it (sort of). He also got the casting pretty much spot on too. Viggo as Aragorn. Swoon.
Yes to Devil Wears Prada too. The casting of all major characters was lovely. The montage of Anne crossing the street in the varied outfits is way cute.
I have waited for this movie ever since it was announced, and now it’s finally here soon! CAN’T WAIT!!!
Ladies, try to contain your shock. Ms. Lohan’s dear personal friend (the very wealthy) Virkam Chatwal, has been arrested for….wait for it…..drug possession! Gasp! (Sorry I’m on my phone so I can’t link but TMZ has it). So unjust, what’s a little heroin on a commercial flight ? 😉
I do hope that they don’t use all that 2013 music in the movie. The 1920s had so much incredible music they could draw from!
I’ve always loathed DiCaprio and have never found him attractive, but…there’s something about that pic of him holding Carey Mulligan’s hand to his chest that is seriously sexy. And now I feel ashamed of myself.
I actually cannot wait for this movie. Always been a GG fan. I do however wish they cast someone else for Daisy. Carey’s a great actress but she just doesn’t have ‘it’ to play Daisy. It might be killed by other films but it also might do well because of how many GG fans there are.
I agree justme WHo the hell let Jay Z and bouncy become America’s cultural czars; use music from the period; Moreover, if the movie encourages people to read F. Scott that would be great – he wrote a lot – For starters try On Booze 80 pages of lyrical impressionistic prose to get one started.
I’m kind of interested in this. Baz’s movies are usually visually interesting, if overwhelming. But mostly I just love the style and design of the 20s.
Baz Luhrmann, Florence Welch singing and those finger gloves Carey Mulligan was wearing? So cute.. I am going to throw my money at this movie.
Roger Ebert just died 🙁
Makes me so sad. I knew it was going to happen soon when I saw his cancer returned but I didnt think that soon.
He will be missed.
🙁
Oh man, that is sad news I was hoping Roger would beat it this time too.
Roger Ebert has passed away, RIP. He was a part of my early love of film. Peace and prayers to his wife.
🙁
I just read that too. So sad! I read his statement from 2 days ago where he talks about doing what he always wanted, only reviewing films he wanted to review, and it made me cry.
So sad. May his soul RIP..
So sad about Ebert 🙁 He was more than a movie reviewer he was a good writer. If you haven’t read his blog, read it because its a thoughtful well written blog. He was one of a kind.
RIP. I was so sad to hear this especially since his ‘leave of presence’ was only a few days ago. My favourite will always be his review of North. I read a piece on Buzzfeed about him and his wife, truly a love to last a lifetime.
RIP Ebert. While here on earth I always have you two thumbs up.
That trailer was so meh to me. I don’t see much chemistry between DeCraprio and whats-her-face. I think I’d rather go and watch the original again.
I’m shopping for a new hairstyle (all rhe better to disarm my crumpets with charm so that i can take better crotchshots) so this trailer is timely.
I’m only here for Jason Clarke TBH! That split-second shot of him in the trailer wasn’t enough!
Roger Ebert enriched my life and inspired my passions. Thank you for all the great years. You were always my hero.
R.I.P. dear Mr. Ebert. He was a great writer and a real profile in courage.
Gatsby looks like it could go either way. It will be visually stunning, that’s a given. The performances look good, though I’m not sold on Leo as Gatsby even if he does look great in that suit. Carey may not be an ideal Daisy, but she comes off better than he does. The whole production feels kind of sterile in the trailer, but I’m looking forward to seeing it.
The May 10 release date could very well have been picked so The Great Gatsby gets lost in the Star Trek and Iron Man mania. However, it also could be a really smart decision. Gatsby will appeal more to the female demographic—cliché, I know—and possibly draw out viewers who have no desire to see a sci-fi or comic-based film.
Full disclosure: I’m excited about Iron Man 3 and Gatsby. I can’t decide how I feel about the second Star Trek based on the previews.
oh no. did beyonce do a back to black cover? bey doesnt have the soul that amy does and that cover kills both my ears and heart.
I looked at the soundtrack and the whole album is full of covers. Emeli Sande is cover Crazy in Love; why not get Beyonce to redo her own song? I wonder how they’ll tie the songs into the movie – if they do.
I loved what Luhrmann did with Romeo and Juliet and I didn’t hate Moulin Rouge so I am excited about this even though the one with Robert Redford is still sooooo good!
I think it will be grat movie and Leo will be back !!!
Wasn’t very excited for Bey’s version of Back to Black… Until now.
The soundtrack is cool and I don’t think the movie will suck either. Baz has a habit of mixing the classic with the modern that appeals to some, including myself.
I’ve seen Carey Mulligan in An Education and Drive and she kinda played the same character – victim, someone who is growing in the shadow of a man-hero or is rescued by a man-hero. I never saw the original GG and haven’t read the book, therefore I don’t know how Daisy was initially created, but from the trailer I see pretty much the same character from the above mentioned films.
Also, there’s definitely not a striking chemistry with DiCaprio (it would’ve made the movie amazing)but then again, I don’t think this guy has ever had chemistry with any other woman than Kate Winslet – and even that was limited. I’d love to see him opposite a really amazing leading lady, something like Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh or Gosling and McAdams.
You’re right about Mulligan and how she chooses to portray her characters—the victim waiting to be rescued by a male figure. The same can be said for her character in Shame.
I enjoyed the plot of The Great Gatsby, I just hated the way it was written. Also, I think Leo is a truly talented actor, I just don’t like him as a person. I’m so full of conflicting feelings!
I can’t wait to see what Baz does with the sumptuous Great Gatsby. I think Leo is perfect for the role. Not sure about Carey…. She seems too mopey. I wish Vivian Leigh could come back to life and be Daisy.
Don’t shoot me, but do you think Anne Hathaway could have been Daisy? I’m trying to think of who else would have played her well.
The Gatsby trailer has been playing for some time here in Aus. It just looks glorious on the big screen.
As with other Baz movies, the costumes, settings and visuals are just stunning. Haven’t read the book (hanging head in shame)….I am really looking forward to this movie!
watch the newet movie scarymovie5 here:
