Anne Hathaway puts off babies to star in Christopher Nolan’s new sci-fi film

I’m glad at least one celebrity is taking my advice! Anne Hathaway is doing really well, post Oscar “debacle”. She isn’t giving interviews, she isn’t crying woe-is-me all over the place. She isn’t flashing her Oscar Nips nor her Oscar Beav. She steps out for happy couple photo-ops with her husband, and even some Brave Solo Annie photo-ops too when Adam isn’t around. And most importantly, Anne is quietly signing on to films. She’s already signed on to do voice work for Rio 2 (an animated sequel to the popular Rio), and she’s apparently going to do a film with Sam Rockwell called “Laggies” or something. But this newly announced project is the gold standard of post-Oscar career moves: she’s going to reunite with Christopher Nolan, who directed her in The Dark Knight Rises.

Anne Hathaway is in talks to star alongside Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar, Christopher Nolan’s latest picture, THR has confirmed.

Nolan is making the movie for Paramount, although Warner Bros. is a co-producer on the project.
The top-secret story involves time travel and alternate dimensions and sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script, written by Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan, is based on scientific theories developed by Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.

A Nov. 7, 2014, start date has been scheduled.

If a deal makes, Hathaway will reteam with the man who directed her in last year’s The Dark Knight Rises. This is the actress’ first move since winning a supporting actress Oscar for her work in Les Miserables.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

It sounds like one of those “deep” sci-fi movies, with a dash of The Butterfly Effect (right?!). “Deep” sci-fi movies can be hit or miss – I disliked Prometheus, but I think I’m the only person around here who enjoyed Steven Soderbergh’s Solaris. Hopefully Interstellar won’t be “attractive white people looking at a weird planetoid and discussing the meaning of life”. Hopefully some stuff will blow up and there will be an actual plot. Since it’s Nolan, I have faith. And this is such a smart career move for Anne.

Isn’t it weird that Matthew McConaughey is now getting offered prestigious films these days? Four years ago, if you told me Annie and Matthew were going to work together, I would have said, “What, they couldn’t get Kate Hudson for some stupid rom-com?”

Also – a November start date? I guess Anne isn’t going to be following one piece of my advice: get pregnant right away! She’s going to put that off for another year so she can work with Nolan again. Which is fine. But a pregnancy would have been even better for her image, I’m just sayin’.

These are some photos of Anne from earlier this week – I do NOT understand that outfit. That outfit is not helping you, girl.

She can have a baby before Nov 2014, can’t she?

  2. Mrs. Peacock says:

Blargh. I thought we’d seen the last of AnnE GOaway for a spell. Yet there is her smugface looking all smug alongside her little sister, er, husband.
At least Rio 2 is guaranteed to be a cinematic masterpiece.
    :/

  3. minime says:

Well, she and Matthew McConaughey are actually something that makes sense. Everything else before is what didn’t make sense (like working with Christian Bale). She is on the same level of Kate Hudson, the only differencce is that the industry is trying to make AnnE hip. Not working…and please someone tell her that matchy matchy with her husband is also not cool.

    • Andrea says:

I’m gonna have to disagree there. I know some people dislike Anne but I do think she is talented.

I’ve never felt Kate Hudson was anything more than a product of Hollywood nepotism. But I do think Anne has legit talent.

      • lucy2 says:

I agree with you Andrea, she may be annoying at times, but she does have talent and has turned in some very good performances.

      • minime says:

Ok ladies, I can respect that. Unfortunately I never saw any acting of hers that was in anyway striking (not even when she acts like she is not expecting her Oscar price…). I find her roles all very bland. But then again, I tend to avoid her movies so maybe she improved with the years and I missed it.

For the time being, we can maybe agree to disagree 😉

And c’mon, i’m right about the matchy matchy at least!

    • Mia 4S says:

@Minime, a year ago I would have agreed with you on McConnaughey but seriously, watching his last few films has been remarkable. It’s like watching someone wake up from a coma…which makes sense given the rom cons with Kate Hudson. 😉

      • minime says:

        @ Mia

I didn’t watch his last movies. Maybe I’ll have a look at it then and see if his return from coma is worth it 😉 Thanks.

      • GoodCapon says:

I’ve always relegated Matthew to the rom-com genre. He was good in Magic Mike but did the public really watch the movie for the plot and the acting 😉

Still, I respect Nolan. He must have seen something good in Matthew to cast him.

      • holly hobby says:

MMac was always a good actor (see the closing summary in A Time to Kill). It was just unfortunate that he took a detour into mediocre movies. I’m glad his career is in an upswing. I just hope he gains back the weight and looks hot again.

    • normality says:

I disagree too. I would have laughed my a** off if I heard this side of 10 years ago that Anne would be a serious actress. Honestly, I wouldn’t have guessed she had it in her, but about 5 years ago or so, she really grew up and started turning in these amazing performances. I wondered if she’d be believable in the batman movie, and I liked her in it. She embodied the role. Sure, it was a little vampy/campy and over the top, but that’s the character, and I really think she nailed it. She blew me away in Les Mis. I bawled my head off. I think she’s got the chops to do this. And I know I probably stand alone at this point, but I don’t think Kate Hudson is a bad actress. She has great comedic timing and audiences love her. I just think she’s made terrible career choices. The movies she’s starred in haven’t used her talent at all. She continues to sink further when I think she could pull something wonderful out of the bag. I actually feel this way about a lot of actresses that star in rom-coms.

  4. Josie says:

I seriously don’t get how a baby would make a difference for her image/career. Her being fertile doesn’t really affect her acting ability.

    • Mia 4S says:

Did you miss the great Mommy whitewash/desperate cling to relevance of Alba, Ritchie, Paltrow, Simpson, Garner, etc? It’s pathetic, but it works. If anything I admire her for actual reliance on talent.

This movie should be awesome! Nolan’s brother Jonah wrote it (he also wrote Memento) and Speilberg was originally the director. I admit I was the first to mock Mcconaughey for many years, but not anymore. Magic Mike and especially Killer Joe proved me wrong. Bravo.

      • annabelle says:

How can anyone really win this silly game?

If you are a woman, in a committed relationship and of child bearing years, and you want to have a baby, but you’re also a celebrity then it’s for your image?

That’s a sad addition to the already frustration mommy wars.

      • Mia 4S says:

@Annabelle, let me counter with Kate Winslet, Michelle Williams, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Felicity Huffman, Marion Cotillard, and countless others who have (sometimes multiple) children and thriving careers. They don’t sell their domestic lives or their children. It’s a striking contrast.

      • annabelle says:

        @Mia4S

        Excellent points. Truly.
I think maybe I am overly optimistic in their intentions and overly pessimistic in our commentaries.

        Well played fellow gossip reader.

      • Mia 4S says:

@Annabellle 🙂 do we have some sort of gossip salute we should offer at this point? Eh, I’ll just buy you a Cracktini in the next Lohan post. 😉

      • mercy says:

Lets not forget the importance of a partner who can help take care of those kids. Michelle and Heath had split up before he passed. Winslet is on her third marriage so it probably hasn’t been easy for her. I’m not sure what her current husband does for a living, but whatever it is he seems to be able to travel with her. Blanchett and Streep both have husbands with low-key careers. Julianne Moore and Marion Cotillard have worked with their director husbands.

It seems like almost every actress, model, etc. talks about their kids and is pictured with them, especially when they’re new mothers or their children are grown and trying to start their careers of their own in the entertainment business. Hey even the fathers are being papped more.

The mommy blogging is another story. There are a very few I enjoy reading, like Elizabeth Banks. And some have been blogging long before they were mothers (Alanis Morisette comes to mind). And I don’t mind if they’re promoting good products or causes, even though I don’t care about Jessica Alba or need her to inform me about organics. But I find most of the mom blogs and sites like People’s ‘celebrity mommy bump watch’ or whatever it’s called obnoxious or boring, or both. I mean, who is ‘Holly Madison’? Seriously. I see the name but have no clue who most of these people are. And where are the daddy blogs?

    • Dutch says:

I don’t think it’s as much about changing her acting ability as much as having a baby is about getting her off the radar for a bit and changing the conversation with AnnE in order to help with the recent backlash. I doubt those who find her annoying are going to find her less so if she does get pregnant and talks like she is the first woman to ever gestate.

  5. Marianne says:

I thought she was also gonna do Robopocalypse with Speilberg.

    • caro says:

      It s delayed

    • Mia 4S says:

He pushed it off for some reason. That’s also possibly part of the reason Chris Hemsworth and family are parading for the paparazzi like reality stars. He was supposed to be working on that now.

  6. NervousBunny says:

She needs to grow out her hair. People seemed to excuse her personality more when she had longer hair.

  7. whipmyhair says:

Best movie name ever. I want to see it twice!

  8. Bijlee says:

So kip Thorne is finally making those movies huh? That’s exciting!

  9. The Wizz says:

Don’t like the shoes, but they look comfy.

  10. GoodCapon says:

Ohhh I love time travel! Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey stuff!! (I’m still waiting for Hollywood to produce an adaptation of The Anubis Gates) 😀

Re: the second outfit. Sans the baggy pants I think it’s actually quite nice.

    • MonicaQ says:

Fist bumping for goodness for the Doctor Who reference 😀

      • GoodCapon says:

        Back at you MonicaQ!

Have you watched the new Doctor Who ep. Have they finally found a love interest for the 11th Doctor…

    • Carrie says:

      Eleven is married…
But “Blink” was my favorite ep!

      • GoodCapon says:

Oops I forgot. But it seems to me that Oswin is headed to that romantic direction.

Blink is arguably the fan favorite in the DW reboot 😀

  11. insomniac says:

I think I’m one of the only people around these parts who still likes Anne, so I’m happy to hear about this. Good for her.

And I LOVE HER BAG. Anyone know what bag that is? It’s probably some insanely expensive thing that I could never afford, but can’t hurt to ask.

  12. lily says:

Good lord, can she just go away for a while??? With her and McConaughey, I guess this will be the first Nolan movie I will avoid.

  13. MonicaQ says:

I just remember when I was an astrophysics major in college (before I took Space Plasma Physics my junior year and said, “OH MY! LOOK AT THE TIME!” and switched my major), I got to here Thorne speak and you should’ve seen the properly stated nerd rage at his dismissive nature of Hawking Radiation. I wanted to pop popcorn. Nothing like watching normally rational and sane men and women turn into Wolverine except their claws are made of equations with just Greek letters and no numbers and not adamantite.

So I’m interested in seeing this movie. I don’t have a hatred of Anne Hathaway either–I only know her really from here on celebitchy and the Dark Knight Rises. I didn’t watch Les Miserebles because I’m not one for musicals. Hopefully she did the smart thing and hid for awhile.

    • I Choose Me says:

Hey MonicaQ. Just wanted to say that I always enjoy your vignettes when you post. 🙂

*now off to Google Hawking Radiation and Kip Thorne*

  14. Karen says:

If they’re trying… the average couple takes 10 months to conceive. If they started late last year (as rumors suggested) then she maybe pregnant soon and would totally be slimmed down by November 14.That’s only if, not every couple wants babies right away.

  15. lucy2 says:

I think she’s wisely laid pretty low. And who wouldn’t sign onto a Nolan movie, they’re all pretty great, and she’s worked with him before.

McConaughey is really turning his career around. I thought he was going to slide into lame rom-com hell, but he’s picking much more interesting projects.

  16. Kasia says:

She doesn’t know how to dress, apparently (I mean when her stylist is not around). Her recent outfits have been just awful.

  17. TeresaKansas says:

She really really wants everyone to just love and admire her, for what? What cause has she promoted, she has not matured past high school.

  18. Claudia says:

I’m one of those people that grew to dislike Anne Hathaway as a person immensely during award season. It’s neutralized at this point, but here’s the thing– I’ve never really liked her as an actress. I really don’t think she has much range, and she’s just not exciting to watch. Very disappointed in this casting choice.. and Kaiser brought something to mind, I really hope Nolan diversifies his cast a lot more.

Just wanted to add, I really love the top outfit. Very cute and vacation-y. The bottom outfit would have been so much better with a different shirt, but the studded loafers are pretty awesome.

  19. Lemony says:

I’m being a bitch but her hubby is so…mousy. I guess I haven’t recovered from those pics of him in his white skinny jeans. He’s like a wisp of a man.
I hope he is a nice guy & treats her well. Every woman, Anne included, deserves that.

  20. Bread and Circuses says:

I LOVED Solaris. Amazing movie both as a science fiction story and as a love story.

I’m a bit sad more people don’t adore it, in fact.

  21. DevonGoni says:

I know people here like to bash Anne for her Oscar campign but she atleast deserved it . She seems to get along with her co-stars as well. She seems to be getting good oppertunties after her win too. Unlike Natalie Portman who lied about doing the dancing in Black Swan and ran and even more awful, obvious campign then Anne. Her post-oscar career isn’t so good.
Also a bit off topic, Natalie P. claims herself to be a child star but how? I only remember her in Leon and she didn’t hit big until Star Wars 1 in 1999. She wasn’t famous in the 90s like JTT,Maculany Culkin, Elijah Wood, Christina Ricci, etc. Who had fans, movies and all. So why does she keep calling herself a famous child star? I don’t get it.

    • saloras says:

natalie was sorta famous in the 90s but certainly not popular like any of those names you listed. She was in some movies like beautiful girls and mars attack after leon but they were small roles.
If you ask me about popular 90s child actors and performers, her name would not come up just saying. i remeber she even insulted jennifer love hewitt for no reason, which is funny since jennifer was obviously more popular then her at the time.

  22. Peta says:

I’ve posted before that she won’t be pregnant anytime soon. Not this year – has to capitalize on that Oscar win – and I’ll wager not next year either. On certain days I wonder if she’ll be pregnant by this husband, ever.

The purse she’s carrying in the last photos is interesting. Can’t tell if it’s vintage, it looks similar to something my mom had in the 70s. It appears to be see-through? Am I seeing that right.

And I’ll give her credit, she’s stuck to her vegan lifestyle. Haven’t seen her in anything leather or even wool in ages.
