Tom Hiddleston really wants to play Eric Draven in ‘The Crow’ remake: good choice?

I got my May issue of Vogue this weekend, and as soon as I brought it inside, I tore off the plastic bag and flipped through the last quarter of the mag, otherwise known as “all of the interesting fashion and interior design p0rn”. I skimmed the Carey Mulligan cover story (I still haven’t worked up the energy to read the whole thing), and then I was completely startled to chance upon this editorial featuring your boyfriend Tom Hiddleston and English model Cara Delevingne. I’m including the scans of the editorial in this post.

Americans may know Cara best as an up-and-coming model in the Burberry campaign, or from her romance with Harry Styles right after Harry dumped Taylor Swift. She’s only 20 years old, and you can really tell in these photos because she looks like a pouty, petulant child. The editorial story is supposed to be that Cara is an actress about to get her big break in a love story with Hiddles as her leading man. The problem? Hiddles is doing all of the emotional heavy lifting and Cara looks dead-eyed, drugged-out, bored and uninterested. It also doesn’t work because you can really only see Tom’s face clearly in ONE of the photos. Something nice: I like Vogue’s new movement to bring in attractive actors for editorial shots with models, but even their editorial with Michael Fassbender was far superior (and he looked like the Sprockets dude).

In other Hiddles news, did you know that he’s now the leading contender to play Eric Draven in the remake of The Crow? If you take a trip in the Way-Back Machine, you may remember that Bradley Cooper (!!!) was once the leading contender for the lead in the remake, but stuff happened, some people got sued, blah blah, etc. They’re still going ahead with the remake though, and The Wrap reported Friday that Hiddles is in “early discussions” to play Eric Dravin, the man who returns from the dead to avenge his death. The Wrap reported:

Hiddleston recently had dinner with producers and sent them a makeup test that he did on his own in London. He will undergo a proper makeup test in the coming days, as the character’s appearance is important to fans of the franchise, who should be delighted with the casting of a major member of the Marvel universe.

Acclaimed Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez (“Before the Fall”) is directing “The Crow” from a script by Cliff Dorfman (“Warrior”), though it’s possible that other writers will be credited as well.

Production is tentatively scheduled to begin this fall, though the timetable could move slightly depending on several factors.

O’Barr wrote “The Crow” to help him deal with the death of his girlfriend, and it’s the story’s emotional component that sets it apart from other comic book properties. Hiddleston appealed to producers who were enamored with his ability to project both a light and dark side. He has also displayed gifted physical talents as the villainous Loki in “The Avengers,” as well as impressive dramatic chops in the acclaimed indie film “The Deep Blue Sea.”

[From The Wrap]

I think the subtext (or context) is that Tom really wants this part and he’s really pulling out all the stops to get it. Usually, an up-and-coming actor in Hiddleston’s position wouldn’t have to grovel so much and do so much extra stuff (doing his own makeup test and agreeing to a “proper” makeup test) to prove he can do the part. That being said, it’s an iconic role and whether or not the film fails or succeeds, if Tom gets the role, it would change his career. Personally, I don’t hate the idea of him in the part, but I wasn’t one of those people lighting candles for the late Brandon Lee either (no disrespect, I just didn’t get why there was so much breast-beating about that tragedy). It would be a physically demanding part, but I think Tom is better at the physical stuff than people think.

  1. KLO says:

    I love Tom.

  2. Ms.Smurf says:

This shoot also doesn’t work because not only does this girl looks young, she looks like she’s a twelve year old playing dress up, next to Tom. That was my first thought.

In that first picture, I thought he looked completely skeevy next to her, because she looks like a child. That and the dead eyed look in her eyes.

    • Jennykins says:

She’s a beautiful doll. She even has the same expression in all the pics… I thought models were supposed to be able to smize and be fierce and all that.

  3. T.Fanty says:

That’s actually not a bad fit, but I think he needs to stay away from more comic book roles because a) it’s not varied enough, and b) *whispers* he got a tad carried away with the Loki thing.

    • V4Real says:

You know I love me some Tom but I’m not sure he can impress me as Eric Draven. When I think of The Crow; I can only see Brandon Lee which brings back sad memories of his death. Why mess with a classic. Some movies should be left alone but I hope Tom can pull it off. What’s with all the remakes anyways? Hollywood can’t afford to hire screenwriters with original thoughts? They are also remaking Weird Science.
As for this photo shoot, it’s creepy because the girl looks like a child.

      • Amanda_SB says:

V4Real – I completely agree with you. Brandon Lee is synonymous with Eric Draven. I can’t believe that anyone would even think of remaking The Crow. That movie was phenomenal and to remake it would be almost blasphemy! Has Hollywood really run out of original ideas? They have to go and re-make Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Weird Science, Breakfast Club, Top Gun and Karate Kid? Not to mention Red Dawn, Mad Max, Point Break, The NeverEnding Story, About Last Night, American Psycho, Lethal Weapon, Porky’s, Romancing the Stone and The Bodyguard….?

I am completely baffled why anyone would even think about remaking some of these cult hits! Would anyone ever consider remaking Gone with the Wind, Clockwork Orange or To Kill a Mockingbird? I don’t think so. Look at the box-office track record of some of the films that have been remade in the past few years. That should be enough of an indicator to TPTB to stop with the remakes!

    • mom2two says:

Does Hollywood no longer have an original idea? I don’t think The Crow is a franchise that needs to be rebooted. Gee, they tried with Crow sequels after Brandon Lee died and those were not exactly huge hits.
I think Tom is a good actor (besides Idris Elba, I think he was the only one to remember to act in Thor…the rest of the cast seemed like they were half asleep) and I am sure if this does happen and he’s the guy, he will do well by it. But this movie doesn’t need a reboot and there has got to be better parts out there for him.

      • flourpot says:

If someone dies making a movie, don’t make a sequel or a reboot. Isn’t that simple etiquette? I’m looking at you, too, Blues Brothers 2000.

    • andrea says:

Hmmm, I dunno. I think Tom’s Eric Draven would look and feel too much like Loki but with more makeup.

Didn’t he land Capa? That seems like a more promising career move for him.

  4. T.C. says:

You can’t see his face. Could be any guy. Photo fail.

    • andrea says:

Awww, I kinda feel bad for him. Basically, he’s been used as a prop. And for this Cara whatsherface that they’ve been trying to make happen for a year now!

  5. Amelia says:

Cara Delevingne is so freaking overated.
The Daily Fail are completely enamoured with her for some reason.
Now, bitchiness aside, I think Tom could do with something to pad out his CV a bit more. He’s not completely missed his window of opportunity seeing as he’ll probably still be doing the Loki thing for a couple more years, but he should really be taking a leaf out of Cumberbatch’s book and making his mark while he can.

    • Liv says:

Totally agree. She seems like a bratty teenager, don’t know why so many hype her.

    • bluhare says:

Couldn’t agree more about Cara Delavigne. Another bored little rich girl who “models” and wants to be an actress. Yawn.

      • lady mary. says:

+1 ,nothin striking abt her looks ,even her Goliath eyebrows cant help her stand out ,they just make her look angry all the time

  6. Tish says:

I just want to throw him a party for getting a job! At long last! No more charity work/publicity stunts!
(I think he’s confirmed on the biopic called Capa)

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I am suspecting Capa may go the way of King of Soho– Michael Mann is working on a film on the same topic, bigger budget, possibly with Eva Green playing Taro.

But yes, it is high time for some real casting news.

      • Tish says:

        Oh, too bad…

I was thinking he needs to aim for supporting roles first in high profile, prestige films before doing this lead thing he craves.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I could be wrong, but losing the lead actress and competition from a bigger director with a bigger budget doesn’t sound promising.

  7. Bijlee says:

    ….she looks like his daughter.

  8. Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I find this whole photoshoot to be skeevy– she looks like a child, he lookalike a pedophile. Also, am I the only one who is tired of Tom as a fashion model?

I am glad to hear he is working hard to get roles, and I guess this would work– much better than casting him as Capa honestly. But I agree that another comic book role would be him doing to much of the same thing.

He is very good at the physical stuff, I agree; it’s one of his strengths. But I think he should be working toward showing some real acting strengths– a film like this is really a directors film.

I thought he wanted to choose roles that would make the world a better place? That’s what he said in his last fashion shoot.

    • Melanie says:

“I thought he wanted to choose roles that would make the world a better place? That’s what he said in his last fashion shoot.”

Well, even ~UNICEF ambassadors~ have to pay that Belsize Park mortgage….And it’s a higher profile role in the US with him as the top billing, unsurprised that he’d be interested.

    • Feebee says:

Before seeing the Tom err during the MTV awards I would have been inclined to agree with you about the overdone fashion model thing but thankfully the photo where his face is visible has helped scrub the MTV faux pas because that was baaaad. Though he has perfect features and build for fashion shoots.

  9. Kaiser says:

At the very least, this photoshoot is a success because it didn’t involve dragonflies.

    • T.Fanty says:

True, although given the creepy undertones that I now can’t unsee, that might not be a good thing.

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

True Kaiser. And though I haven’t read the interview, it sounds like he is not trying to play St. Tom for a change. I think he is at his best when he talks about acting.

The dragonflies were growing on me, I have to say. Nothing else about that shoot though.

      • Melanie says:

Well for one, it’s not really an interview. It’s just some vague comments about the shoot that reads like bad RPF, it’s not him mouthing off to a journalist about the way he views the world or anything.

  10. Melanie says:

I’ve met Cara D. She’s a lot of fun, which isn’t reflected in this boring, petal-soft day look spread at all. Womp. Tom also looks like her father who is sending her off to boarding school or something. Yikes.

Happy to hear casting news about Tom, but I feel like this film might be a really big flop.

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

Speaking as someone who also tended to look much younger than my age at age twenty (I modeled in something vaguely sexual and managed to freak out a lot people who thought I must be a thirteen year old) I totally get it.

This shoot would come across much better if the other model were closer to her age, maybe a nice pouty boy.

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I remember that shoot! And yes, Eddie looks 23, tops. And in that shoot, she looks closer to her own age.

Hiddles also looks much older than 32 in this shoot, which doesn’t help. I would have guessed him as 40.

  11. Petee says:

Kaiser, the breast beating over Brandon Lee was that he was young,Handsome, all around good guy.Almost to good to be true. And also he was the son of Bruce Lee,which was a tragedy in it’s own.

    • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

And he died as the result of an accident on set while filming the crow. He was filming his death scene in the movie and actually died. Really tragic way to go and tragedies fascinate people.

  12. beandip says:

Ugh, why does the female love interest always have to be so much younger than the male lead?

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

Also, as a love interest, Hiddles is a lot more alive and interesting as the younger man. He can be interesting in the right pairing and setting.

      • Melanie says:

This is why I hope Only Lovers Left Alive comes out at some fucking point. It not making Cannes was disappointing…I feel like Tom and Tilda might have some great sexual chemistry

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

If didnt make Cannes! That does not bode well. Yes I agree that pairing holds a *lot* of promise. I reAlly want that film to be a great success.

      • Melanie says:

Wonder if it didn’t make Cannes because it wasn’t to Thierry’s tastes or if it’s still not finished yet. Hmm.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I am assuming the latter– when is Cannes again? I would assume there is a deadline to be iNcluded.

      • Melanie says:

15 May-26. The list is out already.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

Maybe it isn’t done? What a shame to miss ths deadline though.

  13. Mel says:

    He has great hands.

  14. Feebee says:

I don’t place much importance on the makeup test thing. If the look of the character is that important then it sounds like a sensible thing to do. As for him doing his own, god love him, he really does do everything he can. Can’t fault him for that.

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

It is clear he is working really hard to move things forward. Sometimes you have to be aggressive. He should accept whatever offers come his way.

  15. GoldenState says:

I love me some Hiddles, but as Eric Draven? Eh, not so much. Brandon Lee was the tall-dark-brooding type, and our Gingery Love is not a good fit for that role.

    • loveisthecoal says:

This…I love Hiddles as well but he’d be horribly miscast in this part.

    • DesertPoppy says:

I am getting tired of all the remakes in general but if they go forward with this I agree that tom is wrong for the role. Also shouldn’t tom want to diversify more and not do another comic book movie? Isn’t he getting other offers?

    • Resnictem says:

I’m of a mixed mind on this…on one hand, I have great, abiding affection for the original Crow film, and would prefer they do not do a remake. On the other, there’s the possibility of Tom appearing in a pair of low slung leather trousers with no shirt on screen. Maybe they could remake one of the dreadful sequels that they pumped out.

  16. Thea says:

Tom would make a great Christian Grey.

  17. Marty says:

I think the outrage over Brandon Lee’s death really came from how he died. He was very good in The Crow and had a chance to become very successful. I think it’s scary for any actor who deals with real weapons to think someone might intentionally try and hurt you with them when you’re just playing “make believe”. That’s how I saw it anyways.

  18. Norman Bates' Mother says:

For some reason this photoshoot reminds me of St. Vincent’s video to the song “Cruel” (minus the children). She looks like he abducted her, dressed her in fancy clothes belonging to his (much older) long gone wife and tried to force her to act like she cares and loves him but she failed miserably. I know there is much hype around her as the next best model but what happended to the old rule that good models are supposed to be able to express thousands of feelings just with their eyes and faces and not just look young and pretty? She is good as a model in the same way as Kristen Stewart is good as an actress.

    • Az says:

It’s very Nabokov, isn’t it? And the fact that the girl looks a lot like Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby is not helping one bit.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

Aggggh! That is *exactly* why I found this so disturbing! That’s it! I was just saying to myself “Eyebrows… Eyebrows… Why is this so icky? Hiddles, why don’t you know better?”

I am really dumbfounded that nobody else is seeing it this way.

  19. Anna says:

“That being said, it’s an iconic role and whether or not the film fails or succeeds, if Tom gets the role, it would change his career.”

Am I the only one who finds this statement problematic? I think ‘change’ here is meant in a positive sense, ie ‘boost’, establish Tom as a Leading Man, etc. But if the movie fails then it’s “Hiddleston cannot carry a film/franchise” and it will become a Ryan Reynolds 2.0 situation post-Green Lantern.

And I just dont see blockbuster potential here. The original has a cult following but wasn’t a box-office hit when it came out; Crow as a comic doesnt have anything close to the Batman/Spiderman-level brand strength; plus the cult aspect might turn off all the Lee devotees. Sure, the pressure will be on the studio to sell the movie, but Hiddles has enough recognition thanks to Loki that he will be at least partially expected to ‘carry’ it.

And when it fails (which for a comic-book movie means anything below a $400 mil worldwide gross, with at least of it coming from the US for a first installment), Hiddles WILL be hurt by it.

  20. Miss M says:

She looks like his daughter. Pretty girl, but nothing special. Her expressions are always the same.

  21. minime says:

    In a simple resume:
Tom for The Crow remake: no
Cara Delawhat a future actress: no
The photoshoot, was it suppose to depict a daddy teaching something to a spoiled brat? Then it was well done.

    • tubular_trekkie says:

      Ouch! 🙂

I’m not sure about a remake of ‘The Crow’ either though. Could TH be good in it? Possibly. It’s another gothy comic book character though, which coming after Loki might only serve to cement his appeal amongst a certain demographic and maybe not much more than that. Does the thing even need to be remade anyway? I’m not convinced there’s a huge audience for it *regardless* of who’s in it TBH.

The photoshoot: Of minimal interest as you can’t see Tom’s face in most of the shots. He looks good regardless, but this sort of thing isn’t really my cup of tea.
I agree with everyone that they look mismatched age-wise.

    • W says:

You said all I wanted to say but better.
      Cheers!

  22. seVen says:

they CANNOT Remake The Crow! That is one of my all time favorite movies and Brandon Lee cannot be replaced! Now… Excuse me I’m going to go pout.

  23. The Original Mia says:

No. Sorry Hiddleston. Nice guy, but Eric Draven you are not.

  24. Audrey says:

The film has such a cult following that no remake will br good enough.

    I’d run from this project

    • mercy says:

This. A sequel, based on a comic book, with a cult following for both film and deceased lead actor, but not enough mainstream appeal or popularity to make it a sure hit. I can understand why it might appeal (fun to play something different, opportunity to show his versatility, this is what’s popular in Hollywood now, potential for a big payoff), but with all that going against it I wouldn’t bother.

  25. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

All I got out of this is they are remaking The Crow and I need to know whose booze-filled idea this was.

  26. flower says:

Tom as Eric? No, don’t see it and this just proves that Hollywood is running out of ideas. He should make the Capa film and then Black wings has my angel, and leave this possible remake of the crow alone.

As for the photoshoot, creepy. I am sure there are older and less bratty looking models who would have made that “love affair via vogue” a little more believable.

  27. Lexi says:

I wish i hadnt heard his speech at the 2013 movie awards when he won best villian for the avengers

  28. Tig says:

I had to laugh at the reference above to “The Deep Blue Sea”- he was god-awful in that movie. Admittedly, I thought the entire movie was a melodramatic joke, but he was particularly bad. I loved him in War Horse, but he should stay away from more comic book roles at present.

    • Tish says:

He’s always melodramatic in my book.

    • Eve says:

I didn’t like his performance in The Deep Blue Sea (I honestly think he overacted in that movie — and to make things worse, he was acting opposite Rachel Weisz who was perfect in her role).

      • Tig says:

Afraid have to disagree with Rachel bring good in DBS- I thought her character was annoying, and even she couldn’t save it. Her performance in “The Whistleblower” was sooo much better!

  29. DreamyK says:

I love that first pic of Tom. He looks like a tortured hero in a romance novel. Possibly steampunk.

  30. EscapedConvent says:

Well, Hiddles as Eric Draven isn’t the worst idea I’ve ever heard. I agree I don’t really see the need for a re-make, but if they do re-make The Crow, I can see him as this character.

He looks great in these pics, but the model looks silly. Did someone mention Eva Green? Put her & Hiddles in a movie together, & I’m afraid she would eat him alive. I adore Eve Green. btw.

    • Eve says:

      “I adore Eve Green.btw.”

EVE Green? Am I invading your thoughts like Freddy Krueger invades people’s dreams? Because that’d be awesome! 😀

      • EscapedConvent says:

OH my GOD!!! I did, didn’t I? Hahahaha!

Yes, Eve, you are on my mind at all times! I might never have caught this, glad you did!

Everyone! Behold the power of Eve! 😉

      • Eve says:

Yup, The Eyes of Sauron Eve see all.

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

      That was me mentioning EvacFreen.

Hiddles was slated to play the photographer Robert Capa in a biopic, but there are complications in that the director Michael Mann is maki g his own film on the same topic. With a much bigger budget and, so the unconfirmed rumor goes, Eva Green playing Taro. Two different films. In my opinion, Hiddles’s film could be overshadowed by the Mann film, and possibly go the way of King of Spho. This is me speculating though.

I adore Eva Green and would love to see her in anything.

      • EscapedConvent says:

Thank you, Crumpets. I always like to know when Eva Green is in a film. I think she’s fabulous.

But now, having thought of her & Hiddles in a film together, I may keep thinking they ought to do that. Might raise his game.

Hiddles doesn’t need to make films with “models” if he wants a better profile & better jobs.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

They are not going to be in a film together though– she is being considered for the Mann film, he is in the other film (I forget the directors name, but Gemma Artherden was going to play opposite him until she dropped out). So his Capa film would be competing against both Mann and Green.

It would be wonderful if they were in a film together, but that’s bit what is happening.

      • Wei says:

just FYI, Mann’s Capa projet is on hold because he’s doing a cyber spy thing with Chris Hemsworth as the leading man. Tom’s Capa film is named Close Enough and Hayley Atwell is playing Taro. Shooting starts in June. As to the Vogue shoot, so creepy! Tom being Eric should be interesting but the idea of a Crow reboot is horrible…

  31. derpy says:

Fuck no to him as eric draven
    Brandon lee is the crow

  32. misstrishm says:

Hollywood needs to leave The Crow alone. No one can ever bring to screen the pain and sadness that Brandon Lee did.

  33. Heathers says:

he’s giving me edward norton vibes here. that ain’t a bad thing…

    • ds says:

Yes! Last time I saw a post about him I thought the same thing but was to lazy to write anything. Something is Norton like and since I do miss Norton on screen maybe that’s why I don’t mind this guy.

  34. Amy says:

I think he’d be good as Draven. I was a fan of the Crow comic when I was in high school. I loved the original movie, too, but I guess I don’t mind someone else playing the part because I don’t necessarily think of Brandon Lee first when I think of Eric Draven. I think of the character from the comics.
I also think this is… interesting… when you think of the comment Hiddleston made recently about his fangirls. Something like, “the pale makeup and the black leather appeals to a certain element…” Sounds like he wants to appeal to that element some more!

    • tubular_trekkie says:

“Something like, “the pale makeup and the black leather appeals to a certain element…” Sounds like he wants to appeal to that element some more!”

That’s perhaps why I’m not keen on the idea. It’s another gothy male eye candy role that might very well end up catering (or pandering?) mainly to the Loki’s Army people.

The Capa project sounds more promising to me.

  35. icerose says:

Agree there are not enough photos of Tom facing forward in the Vogue shoot-lucky his hands can do all the acting for him and he does look smart. He looks in his early thirties but she looks far younger than she did in the Eddie Redmayne stuff which was set up as young and fun. I guess they were trying to Hark back to A Star is Born or Singing in the Rain but Cara looks too plastic to believe she is an up and coming actress which gives it that uncle niece feel. Tom needs someone to match his intelligence, sophistication and spirit a bit like Michelle Doherty did in the past.

  36. icerose says:

I am more interested in the Capa than the Crow. Mann’s film does not look like it will happen for some time due to his other commitments so no worries there. I am generally not a fan of remakes but Marvel,Star Wars and Batman have proved in the areas of SciFi and Comics they can improve on the Original. The Crow was visually great but for me not the iconic film it is has become since Lee’s death. Its always been my opinion that no actor owns any character, its all about interpretation and as it was Tom’s acting that first appealed to me I will watch it with interest. Films are all in the mix of the actors and production teams so you never really know how it will go, The only down side will be the die hard Crow fans who will be unable to view it with an open mind, which is understandable. Having said that there are so many people new to the Crow after 20 yrs. that this may not be an issue assuming it is good

  37. Migdalia says:

Last thing I heard about this was James McAvoy was in serious talks to play the lead in The Crow. I’d choose him over Tom Hiddleston any day. James has been taking a lot of uber dark roles these days. Trance, Filth, MacBeth…

  38. MissThing says:

On the Vogue photoshoot – I cringed when I saw it and read the… fanfiction that went with it. She does look like a dead-eyed doll in it. I have seen livelier CG characters. Tom poor guy probably had no idea how bad this shoot was going to be. He does his best, but nothing can save that steaming pile of… photos.

On The Crow. I think honestly he could pull it off (on both counts). I was a fan of the original Crow (the sequels blew chunks) and it wasn’t just Lee that carried that movie. They had a spectacular cast and ambiance. If they duplicated that, I am sure Tom could pull it off nicely.

On Capa. I’d like to see this succeed. Haley Atwell has been cast opposite Tom and if it does get off the ground it could be good. I have watched several duel hollywood movies and it’s not always the higher budget one that does better. (I’m looking at YOU Truman Capote)…

Oh hell I am just happy he is trying. I have no doubt his current radio silence while in LA is due to him scrambling like mad to get himself in the right networks before the IronMan3 premiere hits tomorrow night.

  39. I Choose Me says:

I think he could make a great Eric Draven given the right material. It was his acting that put him on my radar (that and his expressive face) so I’m happy that he has prospects other than playing Loki.

It wasn’t the makeup that made the Crow!
The Crow worked because Lee died, and the movie could transcend its cheesy plot: you knew you were truly watching the last moments of this graceful, graceful creature… that gave the movie depth, it resonated with the story.

…and the fight scenes! The effortless martial arts kicks and rounds! (I keep thinking how awesome The Matrix could have been with Lee as Neo)

I like Hiddles, but there’s no way he can get to Lee’s level in a few months… the makeup is not enough!
