Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands abdicates, Willem-Alexander is King

Congratulations, Netherlands! You just got yourself a new king. In case you don’t follow the royal families or Europe, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands announced her abdication a few days ago, and her son, the crown-prince Willem-Alexander, has become the new king. I’m not going to try to explain everything that just happened, so I’ll let People Magazine do it for me while I just enjoy these photos.

Willem-Alexander became the first Dutch king in more than a century Tuesday as his mother, Beatrix, abdicated after 33 years as queen. The generational change in the House of Orange-Nassau gave the Netherlands a moment of celebration, pageantry and brief respite as this trading nation of nearly 17 million struggles through a lengthy recession brought on by the European economic crisis.

Visibly emotional, the much-loved Beatrix ended her reign in a nationally televised signing ceremony as thousands of orange-clad people cheered outside. Millions more were expected to watch on television.

King Willem-Alexander, who became the youngest monarch in Europe, gripped his mother’s hand and looked briefly into her eyes after they both signed the abdication document in the Royal Palace on downtown Amsterdam’s Dam Square.

Beatrix looked close to tears as she then appeared on a balcony, decked out with tulips, roses and oranges, overlooking some 20,000 of her subjects.

“I am happy and grateful to introduce to you your new king, Willem-Alexander,” she told the cheering crowd, which chanted: “Bea bedankt” (“Thanks Bea.”)

Moments later, in a striking symbol of the generational shift, she left the balcony and King Willem-Alexander, his wife and three daughters — the children in matching yellow dresses and headbands — waved to the crowd.

“Dear mother, today you relinquished the throne. 33 moving and inspiring years. We are intensely, intensely grateful to you,” the new king said.

The former queen becomes Princess Beatrix and her son becomes the first Dutch king since Willem III died in 1890.

The 46-year-old king’s popular Argentine-born wife became Queen Maxima and their eldest of three daughters, Catharina-Amalia, who attended the ceremony wearing a yellow dress, became Princess of Orange and first in line to the throne.

Willem-Alexander has said he wants to be a 21st century king who unites and encourages his people and will not be a “protocol fetishist,” but a king who puts his people at ease.

[From People]

I read a story in Time Magazine (I think) several years ago about how the Dutch people were extremely fractured politically, but the only thing any Dutch person could agree on was that they loved their Queen. She was a political necessity, a unifying, patriotic figure. I hope it doesn’t go to hell with Willem-Alexander, but it seems like they handled the voluntary abdication the right way.

Incidentally, I just rewatched The Queen over the weekend (I love that movie) and I was struck yet again by the idea/truth that Queen Elizabeth will probably never abdicate. It’s just not how she operates, it’s not her frame of mind. She will reign until her last breath, and considering her mother lived to be 101, I’d say Queen Liz (now aged 87) will be Queen for at least another decade.

I’m including photos from the introduction of King Willem-Alexander, plus photos from the coronation. Crown Princess Victoria and Crown Prince Daniel of Sweden were there! Also there: Crown Princess Laetitia of Spain, Crown Prince Felipe of Spain, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

    Can I get an orange?
Is It just me or this ladies don’t look happy :/

  2. GiGi says:

My husband is Dutch and my SIL reminded us all bright and early to wear orange today, lol! I guess all people are nationalistic, but geez!

  3. LadyMTL says:

Awww, those 3 little girls look so cute! Now let me sit back and enjoy the diamonds…so many diamonds…

  4. Suze says:

    Thanks CB and Kaiser!

    (((Falls into royaloonie swoon)))

I wasn’t crazy about Max’s pre-inaguration ruffly dress at all – I guess it was a repeat? But the blue one she wore to the actual event was to die for, as was the tiara. And she dealt with the HAIR issue.

I love the nuclear Dutch royal family – so cute and sweet together.

  5. Spif says:

Willem-Alexander will do, but modtly because he married Maxima who is the most beautiful Queen of the world. Look for her fantastic blue dress she wore today. It’s a happy day for us…

  6. aims says:

I totally agree, Queen Elizabeth will leave the throne when she takes her last breath. There’s no way she would leave voluntarily.

I love seeing my favorite royal couple, Princess Victoria and David. Those two are the real deal, and it warms my cold heart to see them together. They love each other very much, it’s nice to see.

    • Suze says:

I think his name is Daniel? But whatever, I agree, they are always very smiley and cuddly.

    • ErinINPitt says:

I’ve always thought she’d leave if she could get Charles to abdicate to William. Other than that, yep, she’s gonna drop in the saddle.

      • LAK says:

The Queen biographers talk about her still being scarred [influenced really] by the abdication of her uncle David, and the effect that had on the family, besides her becoming Queen.

She would never agree to the crown skipping Charles in favour of William short of Charles dying before her.

She also takes her oath of service for life very seriously, so no question of her own abdication unless she was seriously unable to do the job.

      • Sade says:

Poor Prince Charlie, mommy doesnt like how he turned out does she. Kind of obvious why he would be drawn to Camilla – strong woman like his mum who validated him (unlike his mum)

British comics must be mining this comedic goldmine of Prince charles attending the abdication of a monarch who has reigned only half as long as his mother.

      • Pixie says:

I don’t think so, the Queen’s always had a big sense of duty and the incident with her uncle abdicating very much affected her. I think she’s very loyal to the UK and will die as Queen.

      • Dromedary says:

In less than three years, she’ll be longest reigning female monarch in recorded world history (Queen Victoria currently holds the title). Go Queen Liz!

      • My2Pence says:

I agree, HM will never abdicate. It isn’t done in the UK and she has pledged her entire life to the country.

As for skipping Charles? Never. Why on earth would she want to do that? He may have been a lousy husband, but he’s the most effective Prince of Wales they’ve ever had. Built the Princes Trust from scratch. www(.)princes-trust(.)org(.)uk/

HM wouldn’t skip hard-working Charles in favor of work-shy William. William keeps proving (and basically saying) he doesn’t want the job, nor is he willing to do the work in order to deserve the perks.

    • QueenFreddie says:

I love Victoria and Daniel too. I saw pictures of their daughter Estelle over the weekend and gosh is she cute.

    • Karen says:

The Dutch have a tradition of abdicating for the next generation. I can’t think of any other family that does this as well. Charles will be King only after Elizabeth has passed.

    • apsutter says:

Victoria and Daniel are my favorite too!! Such a sweet couple and so in love. I also really love the Spanish prince and princess…those two are wonderful. Maxima looks like she’s going to be a fabulous queen and there seems to be a lot of love in that family.

  7. Jess says:

If Queen Elizabeth is one day unable to carry out public duties, I don’t think she’ll have much choice but to abdicate. In the old days the King or Queen could be mad as hatter, extremely ill or in some cases even dead and buried, and the only way the wider public would hear about it was through chinese whispers. These days if the Queen or Prince Philip miss one little event everyone takes notice and I’m sure all the papers start polishing the obits. I’m not sure the monarchy could survive years of her being invisible to the public, the daily questions about her health, speculation on how much longer she’ll live etc. in this day and age. It would create a lot of uncertainty and people would get used to not having a public monarch, which is far from ideal when no one is overly fond of Charles or even William.

    • Poppy says:

I will eat my hat if Queen Elizabeth ever abdicates. She doesn’t view it as a job that can be retired from, for her it’s just her life. And she saw the effect of the last abdication in the UK, and although there wouldn’t be the same constitutional crisis now as there was then, it’s something that would have left a huge impression on her.

    • bluhare says:

IF HM was unable to perform her job due to illness, would they have a regent or something like they did when children were crowned king? Charles would be regent until his mother dies?

      • Poppy says:

I doubt they’d do anything so drastic – the only that would be needed would be if something needed to be signed in to law and the Queen was physically unable to do it, and it wasn’t something that could wait (i.e. if she was that ill then she’s probably about to die imminently), or if she developed dementia or something. That’s the only constitutional power the Queen has. But for normal duties, I think it’ll be a more gradual withdrawing and handing over responsibilities to Charles and William.

It’s certainly not going to happen until her health deteriorates – both she and Prince Philip will work until they drop, or they physically can’t any more.

    • elisa says:

She certainly wouldn’t abdicate. I suppose that if she became incapable of exercising her duties as queen, Prince Charles could ask Parliament for a regency – as happened in the later years of George III’s reign. Even back then, that was contentious and I think that even now it could be damaging to the monarchy. So, I can’t see it happening, except as desperate measures.

I’m English and I adore the Queen, so I hope that she doesn’t abdicate.

However, I do think that Charles will be a good king. He takes his role as Prince of Wales seriously – unlike Prince William. *rolls eyes*

      Sachi:
      check “el mundo”
      “el confidencial”
      “el confidencial digital”
      “el semanal digital”
All of them have these news. I have no time to link all of them. I leave here only one. http://www.libertaddigital.com/chic/corazon/2012-09-03/recuperando-el-tu-crees-que-esto-son-vacaciones-de-letizia-1276467410/

There is sensationalistic press in Spain like everywhere. About making up things about Ms Ortiz…well, I think they are actually covering up a lot instead.

I am not going to argue with you. I don’t like her. I don’t think she has any aptitude or attitude to be a queen. Obviously you love her so, we will never reach an agreement. Anyway, Look up those news, I am not lying.

      Buenos dias

    • Lol says:

King/Queens just do not abdicate in Britain though. The only one in History to ever do so (willingly) was her Uncle. I’ll doubt she’ll break a century old tradition, they have the saying “the king is dead, long live the king” for a reason.

  8. DreamyK says:

Any word on how Beatrix’s younger son, Johan Friso is doing? He was caught in an avalanche and was said to have suffered major brain damage. The physicians were unsure if he would ever awake from his coma.

    • Karen says:

The last I heard he was still in the hospital. Itsprobably one of the reasons she’s stepping down. .. so she can travel to see her son often.

    • Ladybug says:

Not much has changed since the accident, I think. It’s unlikely he’ll improve much. It’s desperately sad.

  9. ErinINPitt says:

I just love Victoria & Daniel. They just always look happy together. I saw these pictures over at DM & couldn’t help but notice how relaxed Prince Jackass looked without The Captive. What are the odds we’ll see another “bad decision” in 9 months?

  10. QueenFreddie says:

Queen Maxima looked really great in the blue dress and a great tiara to match. I don’t know much of this royal family other than I love Queen Beatrix (now princess again) I love her hair and hats. The King & Queens little girls are adorable.

Crown Princess Victoria looked so good in that purple dress from yesterday. My favorite look from yesterday was Princess Mathilde of Belgium.

  11. Faye says:

Just a repeat of what I said in the other thread on this, but the new Royal Couple and their kids are so freaking adorable. Also, I’m currently planning a heist of one of Maxima’s tiaras -it’s a three way tie between the ruby and diamond one you see here, a sapphire and diamond one she wore this morning, and one that looks like a necklace of round-cut diamonds that she wore last night.

I think Letizia and Felipe are a soap-opera couple played by actors to inspire their nation. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a couple in real life where both members are that good-looking. Seriously, if I were that pretty, I’d spend most of the day looking at myself or my spouse in the mirror. Thankfully those two are not as shallow :).

    • LAK says:

Lol…at Spain using actors for Letizia and Felipe.

    • bluhare says:

Faye, I will aid and abet for the sapphire one. And you cooking while we take planning breaks.

      • Faye says:

It’s a deal! And we can share the sapphire and diamond one; you can wear that one for the days when I feel like going more casual and break out the diamond-necklace one :).

      • bluhare says:

No way!!! For aiding and abetting I want the sapphire tiara, but I will agree to letting you borrow it from time to time in exchange for one of yours.

      • Faye says:

Hold up a minute! I have to cook *and* give up the sapphire tiara? In other words, you do no work and get all the royal benefits? Who do you think you are, Waity Middleton? 🙂

  12. Lucy says:

    The Spaniards are both gorgeous!

    • Suze says:

Letizia is a stunning beauty and her husband, the prince? Not bad lookin’ hisself.

      • lin234 says:

It’s a shame we don’t hear more about them in the states. Letizia just has that natural beauty to her like the Queen of Jordon.

There’s carefully put together like Kate and Natural Beauty like Letizia and Rania.

      • GoodCapon says:

Seriously! They’ve been married close to a decade and they still look like they’ve got the hots for each other.

I’m not too keen on her shoes today, but she just looks so damn great that I’ll let it pass.

      • GoodCapon says:

lin234: I wouldn’t say Letizia is a natural beauty as she had botox and/or other facial surgery. Which is a shame because she’s beautiful enough as it is.

      • Spaniard says:

Letizia is stunning because she has had all sorts of surgery, botox and so on.. If you look up pictures of her before and after you will be surprised. Her nose and chin were terrible.

She is not well liked in Spain. She is very arrogant, vain and not as smart as she thinks she is, always complaining about having to go to institutional events and wishing she was a princess from 9 to 5. But she wants the privileges all the time.

Felipe only had to do one thing. Chose a wife. He chose this one. Not that smart.

      • Sachi says:

Letizia’s nose job was done right. She was beautiful before, but she’s still beautiful now. If you can have plastic surgery that will make you look as great as she does, why not have it? Hopefully she doesn’t end up like Carla Bruni’s overdone botox.

And she looked terrible in 2007 after her sister committed suicide and some Spanish media sects blamed her for causing it (how disgusting, and Letizia was 7 months pregnant, too). She had deep, deep wrinkles on her face and she looked haggard and 10 years older. I don’t blame her for correcting that since Spanish media used to make fun of her nose and call her a witch and a hag. Even her grief and sadness about her sister’s death only fueled more criticisms.

Spaniard – always complaining? Where and when did she complain about working 9-5? Letizia barely speaks candidly to photographers and journalists. Do you also believe that she is an atheist and a Republican who is going to ruin the monarchy? I would really like that proof where Letizia complains about working as a royal. Did you catch it on video?

And last I heard, the polls in Spain are very favourable towards Letizia. She’s the only one in the Borbon family who is still seen in a very positive light in the middle of all the scandals affecting Juan Carlos and his daughter Cristina.

      • LAK says:

Her plastic surgery isn’t so horrific. She still looks human. Look at Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned.

        http://www.hellomagazine.com/imagenes/royalty/2013043012340/europe-royal-ladies-fashion/0-63-97/mozah–a.jpg

        She’s Sheikha catface!

      • Sachi says:

LAK – Mozah looks awful. Today her cheeks had these lines in the middle like she had injected extra fillers to the top parts only. She can be stylish but I find most of her outfits are over the top and too flashy.

      • Spaniard says:

        Sachi:
You don’t need to get so aggressive. I have not said any lie. Check the facts in the main newspapers in Spain. The are there. She has transformed in another person thorugh surgery and treatments, there are pictures. She either wants to look like Rania or after certain treatments they all look the same.
You are accusing me of many things here. I have never said she is the one to blame for her sister’s suicide, you said that.I read he main press, I watch TV and I talk to people. That’s how I know that my opinion is shared by many others. If you love her , fine, but don’t attack me because I don’t.

Please, Go to the main Spanish newspapers. They report many times when her highness put her foot in her mouth. Oh, and read the comments of the readers. Even more revealing.

And regarding the polls I wonder when you last checked. She doesn’t get 5 out of 10 lately.

As you see I am not being agressive as you are. I don’t like her as many other Spaniards because she is not good at representing us. And She gets her surgery and “private holidays ” with my money.

      • Pinky says:

LAK – Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned is 54 yo, LetiZia is 40… give her time, she already have spanish taxpayers money.

      • Sachi says:

Spaniard – I was not accusing you of blaming Letizia for her sister’s suicide. My initial comment was directed at no one. It was my own opinion about why she got the nose job in the first place since we are talking about her plastic surgery.

My comment after that, where I addressed you by your username, is my actual comment to you.

And aggressive? How? I asked you legitimate questions. I was not attacking you, I was trying to confirm your claims that she always complains through actual proof of her truly saying such words. It’s easy to make-up stuff and write about it than it is to produce a video where Letizia is caught on camera actually complaining about her work as a royal.

The Spanish media sects are notoriously gossip-happy. Do you deny that? There have been a lot of fake articles on Letizia that have no basis and made of lies to trash Letizia’s reputation.

Just like the repeated mantra that she is an atheist and a Republican. It has no proof, but a lot of Spaniards believe it. Just like lots of Americans still believe Obama is Muslim.

I don’t live in Spain so I don’t know which “Spanish newspapers” to check except news sites like El Pais and I have never seen any article about the things you are talking about. That was why I am asking you for proof.

Some Spaniards say that Letizia is being protected by the media, that her extravagant life are being kept secret. But you are saying that her activities are actually well-known in Spain and that everything she does and says can be seen on Spanish newspapers.

That’s why I am confused. Which do I believe? One set of Letizia critics says the media is protecting her, and another set of critics is claiming the opposite and that her arrogance and luxurious lifestyle are reported in the media.

      • LAK says:

Pinky – She’s 54?? i didn’t know that. I thought she was fairly young. ok revised opinion…..She looks good for someone of her age in the gallery of catfaces.

      • My2Pence says:

I actually think it would be helpful if members of royal families did understand (and even sympathize) with Republican movements. If you can understand WHY people think monarchy is an out-dated institution, you can work that much harder to try to prove them wrong.

I think that may be my one big concern about CP Victoria of Sweden. She just doesn’t seem to understand that some people think Sweden would be better off without monarchy. If she cannot look at the situation logically, understand their concerns and address them by proving her worth even more than she already does, Sweden might not have a monarchy much longer either.

Paraphrasing Prince Philip and Prince Charles about monarchy, “After all, if people don’t want it, they won’t have it.”

  13. Talie says:

Didn’t one of Bea’s sons end up brain damaged recently? That may have been a big reason for her to move on.

    • Sachi says:

Yep. That was most likely the impetus for Beatrix to speed up her abdication.

When Friso went into coma last year, a lot of speculation got stronger about Beatrix abdicating. When she made the announcement that she was going to appear on TV with some news, a lot of people were convinced that she was stepping down. And she was. It was only a matter of time. She looked sad and exhausted for months after Friso had the accident.

She’ll probably spend most of her time in London now, where Friso and Mabel live with their 2 daughters. It can’t be easy for Mabel to be by herself, so having Beatrix there will mean a lot.

      • GoodCapon says:

^ I was going to reply but you beat me to it Sachi!

It’ll be a weird time gettng used to calling her Princess Beatrix.

      • bluhare says:

I just went and looked at the photos. She looked at her son with so much love, it was lovely to see.

And, Faye? That bloody tiara is MINE!!!

    • Sisi says:

this year is a year full of several big anniversaries, one of them the total reign of this royal family. It has been reported that this date had been picked over 1,5 years ago by Beatrix. Johan-Friso’s accident was only a year ago.

    • Faye says:

@bluhare: Bring it on, babe. Bring.It.On (goes to borrow a shank from the Cumberbitches).

  14. LAK says:

i adore Victoria and Daniel. They are so cute together. No doubts about their relationship despite dating for 10yrs prior to marriage.

    • My2Pence says:

@ LAK. From what I’ve read, it wasn’t that they didn’t want to marry sooner. It was her father who seemed to think Daniel (a self-made successful businessman) wasn’t good enough. But I’m not going to protest the outcome, because 1) they are great together no matter how long they had to wait and 2) without that wait we wouldn’t have Princess Estelle.

This is the same king who appears ready to welcome his son’s child p0rn / naked model / reality tv star into the family on the taxpayer’s dime, so really, I do question this king’s decision making. Daniel = not good enough but Naked Model = bring on the wedding as fast as you can?

  15. truthful says:

gorgeous lil family and the former Queen is very pretty to me also.

    awww

  16. Karen says:

Their eldest daughter will be Queen, so itll only be one male leader before the reign is returned to the ladies.

    • Sachi says:

First King of the Netherlands in over than 100 years.

      • Karen says:

Correct. After WA reign his daughter will be queen. So after a few decades another female will be ruler. Historically there were more male rulers but in modern times the ladies are the figure heads of the Netherlands.

      • LAK says:

Many of the current European heirs have girls as their heirs. In about 30-50yrs, if monarchy is still around, practically every throne will be occupied by a female.

Only Japan refuses to have a female heir, so the throne has gone sideways to the current CP’s brother.

      • Sachi says:

LAK – It’s funny because before, there was only one Crown Princess, Victoria of Sweden. All of her peers were future Kings.

Now it’s switched. Almost every monarchic country except Japan and Denmark has a female for a future monarch.

We can add William to the list depending on when he becomes Prince of Wales then King. It could take another 20-30 years, and by then either all the monarchies have been abolished or Amalia and the other kids will be monarchs and have their own children.

  17. don't kill me i'm french says:

    gooooddd for themmmm

  18. Dingo says:

“Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands announced her abdication a few days ago” – no some months ago in january 😉 I think the event cost about 12 mio euro (and they are actually trying to do it kind of budget).

  19. L says:

More fashion/dresses from the coronation (Letizia is looking super skinny btw)

Much better overall than the dresses fromt he state dinner. What the heck was camilla wearing?
    http://www.hellomagazine.com/royalty/2013043012340/europe-royal-ladies-fashion/

    • LAK says:

      i really liked Camilla’s dress.

She’s not a beauty, nor is she statuesque, so for her that dress was pretty good, and the tiara suited her to a T. Makes one wonder of she’s deliberately kept that hairstyle since that’s her designated tiara.

      • L says:

Meh, the boob shelf was weird, and with the corset it looks like two different dresses that were sewn together. Right under the boobs.

Props to her hair and makeup though. Liked that.

      • LAK says:

L – All her dresses and coats sit like that. I can’t figure out why that is. At this point, i’m resigned to it.

I have learnt to appreciate her outfits regardless.

  20. Elly says:

    Maxima´s blue outfit… WOW. Magnificent!

  21. Nanea says:

That bow or whatever on Maxi’s shoulder was a bit much, but I liked the blue dresses of her and the four princesses very much and the girls looked cute.

I wonder what the Prince of Wales was thinking at the ceremony, he was also there 33 years ago when Queen Beatrix was crowned.

I read in my local paper today that Amalia asked her dad a few days ago how long he’s planning to do this!

    • Suze says:

LOL at Amalia. It would be odd being a kid and having this vague idea that queen-dom is hovering over your head.

  22. BooBooLaRue says:

The pix of the former Queen Bea BEAMING at her son is priceless. They seem to be nice people. Sad about Friso though.

  23. Az says:

Charles will never stop paying for the Diana fiasco. There is no way Queen Elizabeth will ever abdicate unless she can pass Charles over fot William.

    • LAK says:

      The Queen will never abdicate.

Not for Charles and not for William.

Further, she’s a strong believer in tradition. Short of his death before her, she will never agree for crown to bypass Charles for William.

Charles may not be a popular figure, but he is the heir. Further, he may have been a bad husband to Diana, but he is the best POW in the last 500yrs. The previous ones were party princes in the grand tradition of party princes. He is practically a saint in comparison.

      • TG says:

I lover wadi g about Prinny in my regency romance novels.

      • TG says:

Sorry mistake meant to say I love reading about Prinny. So it does seem like the POW of the past were wasteful spendthrifts.

    • My2Pence says:

      As I stated above:

I agree, HM will never abdicate. It isn’t done in the UK and she has pledged her entire life to the country.

They are cute, I agree. But, royalty should not exist in the 21st century. Period.

  25. The Original G says:

    Gorgeous family!

Camilla’s dress is beyond hideous. It’s a total fail. It doesn’t fit her bust, she’s in dire need of a bra and the dress is not hemmed to the correct length. I’m not against comfortable shoes but those are ugly and innapropriate for the event.

    Her hairstyle is lovely.

  26. Patrice says:

Congrats to The Netherlands, a wonderful country full of warm & welcoming people!

P.S. I just LOVE how in love Princess Victoria of Sweden and her “commoner” hubby are; look at them discreetly holding hands!! That is something that you would never, not in a million years catch any of the stodgy Brit royals doing (if you don’t count William & Kate’s brief hand-holdy walk to the helicopter on the way to their honeymoon).

Sigh. I’ve always loved what I’ve known about Victoria and her husband is clearly smitten with the woman and not the crown. (Remember his super gushy, lovey dovey, personal birth announcement of their daughter?) What a wonderful couple 🙂

    • LAK says:

It is somewhat of a myth that British royals or royals in general can’t show affection in public.

i think it depends on the characters involved and the generation/culture they are from.

The British Queen’s generation is stiff upper lipped, no matter what country you are from.

The current generation is more open. Most have mastered the art of being formal whilst still teleporting their affection in small ways.

Charles and Diana used this myth to great effect when they wanted to hide the state of their marriage, but there is enough video/pics from the early years of their marriage to see that they were affectionate in public.

  27. Relli says:

Beautiful pictures and yes to all of you above that blue dress was stunning! I just finished Monarchy the UK version and I was blown away how intertwined all of these monarchies have been for hundred years. Its nice to see them all step otu and support one another, Although I do wonder is there an unspoken tiara competition?!?!?!

  28. Liz says:

Yay! Yes, Queen Liz wont leave that throne till she’s in the grave. But I think it’s nice that Queen Beatrix stepped down – let her enjoy a semi-retirement.

  29. Lulu.T.O. says:

Such an ostentatious display of wealth when in the same article they mention how the country is struggling economically just doesn’t sit right.

Maybe I need to take my happy pills.

  30. Ladybug says:

Thank you thank you thank you for writing about this, Kaiser!

It’s great day to be Dutch. I think Willem-Alexander understands why his mum is so well-loved and will carry those characteristics with him.

  31. Nanea says:

I’m back after looking at pics elsewhere, and I’m wondering why Charlene wasn’t there?

Too busy shopping? Finally taking this moment to run away?

French mags have been reporting for months that they’re over.

  32. lower-case deb says:

Is Crown Princess Victoria pregnant or ill? She looks pale. Queen Maxima is radiant as a queen can be, and the three little princesses are adorbs. Sad to see Queen Beatrix stepping down, but at least its a mostly happy occasion you don’t have to feel bad about partying.

  33. lower-case deb says:

Is Crown Princess Victoria pregnant or ill? She looks rather pale. Queen Maxima is radiant as a queen can be, and the three little princesses are adorbs. Sad to see Queen Beatrix stepping down, but at least its a mostly happy occasion you don’t have to feel bad about partying.

  34. lucy2 says:

Don’t know much about them, but the daughters are adorable.

I imagine Charles sat there stewing in jealousy, LOL.

  35. Agnes says:

I understand that these people are a unifying element, a tradition, etc, but it’s all just so… silly. A king in 2013? Really?

    • Suze says:

The people in the Netherlands overwhelmingly support the monarchy – I read recently that the royals have something like a 78 percent approval rating. And Max’s individual approval rating was even higher.

And it’s the Netherlands, an egalitarian paradise.

So the monarchy there must either be doing something right for the public, or they have excellent PR. Or maybe both.

      • Littlewood says:

Today 85% approves of the Royal Family according to TNS NIPO, actually. The way this all has been organised and done and the speech to his Mother makes me very proud to be Dutch today!

      • Anne De Vries says:

I don’t care about them very much, but I also don’t object to them, and things like this are interesting.

Maybe it’s because a) Dutch society doesn’t hold much with class (not in the British way) so most people kind of see them as a family who just happen to hold a fancy job, and b) there are no party animals, layabouts or stupid displays of priviledge among them, so they don’t really give offence. As far as I know everybody who doesn’t have work with Royal functions holds down a job.

Mostly they’re just.. there. Like fancy drapes when you also have blinds. Not really necessary, but looks kind of nice. Fancies the place up a bit 😉

  36. Kristen says:

Princess Letizia looks scary skinny. Even worse than pre-baby Kate.

  37. Spaniard says:

    Sachi:
    check “el mundo”
    “el confidencial”
    “el confidencial digital”
    “el semanal digital”
All of them have these news. I have no time to link all of them. I leave here only one. http://www.libertaddigital.com/chic/corazon/2012-09-03/recuperando-el-tu-crees-que-esto-son-vacaciones-de-letizia-1276467410/

There is sensationalistic press in Spain like everywhere. About making up things about Ms Ortiz…well, I think they are actually covering up a lot instead.

I am not going to argue with you. I don’t like her. I don’t think she has any aptitude or attitude to be a queen. Obviously you love her so, we will never reach an agreement. Anyway, Look up those news, I am not lying.

    Buenos dias

  38. Suze says:

Ranking the tiaras in order of my covertness:

Max’s diamond bandeau thingy (want so bad)
    Victoria’s amethyst circlet
That big pile of diamonds on Camilla’s head
Those tasteful leaves around Letizia’s head
Max’s second tiara with the rubies

But really, I’ll take any one of them off of their hands.

    • apsutter says:

Victoria’s whole jewelry scheme is great! The tiara, earrings, brooch, and bracelets. She’s so freaking cute and could her husband be any cuter?! I cant wait to see them in their old age doting on one another. They will be adorable

  39. The Original Mia says:

    Tiaras!

I’m in the minority, but I love Max’s red dress. The blue is the obvious fave, but the red is pretty too.

Love everything about Victoria. She is simply gorgeous and in love. Isn’t she expecting her 2nd child?

    Letizia is tiny.

Camilla looks dated, but that’s her style. She’s growing on me. Never thought I’d say that. Have Waity to thank for that.

  40. shadowonfilm says:

Looking at all of these pictures of the royals, I can’t get over how downright frumpy the Brits look!

  41. KellyinSeattle says:

Going to have some tea and crumpets….

  42. littlestar says:

I try not to be snarky/talk about people’s physical appearances (except for in warranted cases like KK, Leann, and Lindsay, who have all had crazy amounts of even crazier plastic surgery), but holy hell Charles is really red in the face! I know he’s a ginger, but I’m wondering if he drinks a lot and/or has some kind of medical condition. My fiancé is a ginger (and so is his dad who is a few years younger than Prince Charles) and neither of them ever get that red in the face. I know red-heads are more prone to skin redness, but… Maybe he has a sunburn? Or is my computer screen wonky?

    • Suze says:

I noticed that, too. It’s beyond a sunburn, almost. Or it’s a severe sunburn. Maybe he was golfing. Or gardening. Or polo-ing.

      • littlestar says:

He must have been gardening and wore his sunglasses and hat, but forgot to apply sunscreen, because it’s only the lower half of his face and nose that is as red as a tomato :S.

  43. apsutter says:

Wow, this family is radiating pure happiness, joy, and most importantly, love. Wonderful to see! Love the pride from Beatrice towards her son and grandchildren. Maxima is absolutely gorgeous and the blue gown is the most regal and beautiful outfit I’ve ever seen! She’s so statuesque and beautiful and I love their official portraits. That sapphire tiara and brooch are amazing!!

    • littlestar says:

I’m not familiar with this Royal family, but I agree. You can really see the love they have for each other through the pictures!

  44. DanaG says:

I love a Royal event when they get out the Tiara’s so many sparkly things to look at. And the Queen has said several times she will never abidicate Prince Charles has the worlds longest apprenticeship and if she does live to 101 he may be in his late seventies/eighties before he sees the throne if he makes it that long. Prince Charles has taken up the slack and when William leaves the RAF he will too. I think forget he is third in line and has a lifetime of duty a head of him. I do wonder what will happen if Prince Phillip passes away before the Queen does and how she will cope? I think that may lead to Prince Charles doing more of her duties. Camilla is so not attractive love the tiara but that dress is awful.

  45. LMB says:

I was there on Dam Square this morning and I can’t tell you how proud I am of our former Queen, our new King, Queen and their young family. I still get emotional by the thought of seeing them on the balcony singing the national anthem with us. I feel very proud to be Dutch. I hope they will remain with us for a long time. Lang leve de Koning en Koningin!

  46. Bread and Circuses says:

Camilla looks fantastic. The hair colour and the white top to her dress really complement her skin.

  47. Amy says:

What a new cute royal family! I’m sorry the Queen abdicated–did she want to or was this expected of her? I read somewhere that in the Netherlands, typically the monarch retires (sounds better than “abdicate”) around their 60s to let their kids take on the work. Those three little girls are also adorable. The little one looks like mom and the other two look like dad.

Letizia has always been scary skinny it seems. The magazine covers in Spain were always pointing that out and speculating she had an eating disorder.

I think Victoria and Daniel are my favorite royal couple!

And I don’t think I’ve ever seen Camilla wear a crown? It actually looks pretty good on her!

    • Suze says:

Camilla is not my favorite but her bouf does make for some great tiara hair.

    • Anne De Vries says:

It is indeed normal for the Queen to abdicate, and I think it’s usually a balance of where they and the Crown Prince/ess are in their lives. In this case, W-A and Max enjoyed the young years of their children in (relative) peace, and now the girls are out of the baby years he’s been taking over more duties.
Then Friso (Bea’s son / W-A’s brother) had an accident and is still in a coma, and from what I read Bea visits him in London most weekends. I imagine that will have brought the abdication forward, as that must be exhausting. I assume that the decision was made between them, kind of a ‘are you ready? Because I’m ready’ decision.

So it’s a little bittersweet – a happy occasion on one side, and she gets to support him while having more time to herself, and a sad occasion because Friso isn’t really expected to improve.

  48. LMB says:

I just couldn’t resist this one. This was their first balcony scene. It was on their wedding on February 2nd, 2002. This is probably why we love our Royal couple so much. By the way, I was there too. I was standing quite close on the side and it was an unforgettable day.

  49. MyLittlePony says:

I am simply in awe of Maxima. She can truly pull off a gown that would look just awful on anyone else (the red number). Have to admire Camilla, too. She looks really good despite the minor flaws, I think . I mean she was never a great beauty nor an elegant woman, but rather average in every respect, AND she is nearly 70 years old now. Simply have to respect her. To those interested in the royal bling bling, there is a very good and extremely informative documentary about the royal jewels of European royal families http://www.dr.dk/Salg/DRsales/Programmes/Documentary/Royals/20091118135046.htm
I think it should be available on DVD as well.

  50. Reece says:

I missed all the fun yesterday, stupid responsibility.
I loved CP Victoria’s coronation dress. The purple for the dinner not so much but the coronation, LOVED IT!

    Maxima…my mouth dropped open.
