The very first thing I saw this morning when I got up was everyone yelling about Kim Kardashian’s Givenchy dress at last night’s punk-themed Met Gala. Was Kim’s dress “punk”? No. Was it flattering? No. Was it cute in any way? No. But I still want to defend it, kind of.
Life & Style says that Kim decided “at the last minute” to wear this floral disaster, and she had to get it radically altered to fit her expanding pregnant body. Apparently, “She’s gained a lot of weight in her arms and her stylist has told her she should not show them off. So her dress now has sleeves when it was sleeveless before.” So that’s why the dress has SLEEVE-GLOVES?! Apparently, “Kanye is annoyed, as the dress is by his best friend Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy, and he feels embarrassed that Kim is messing with a beautiful piece of art.” Well, Kanye doesn’t look happy with her on the carpet, but he hasn’t looked happy with her in a while.
Obviously, there are a lot of problems with this dress, but really, people… it could have been SO MUCH WORSE. The floral fabric looks like a 1980s couch, the built-in gloves are giving her hands an “optical illusion” vibe, and I wish her hair was different. But still. It could have been way worse.
PS… OMG, her shoes are made from the same fabric. The Met Gala is not a bridesmaid convention!

In this case, looks like Kim made her outfit out of a Motel 6 bedspread! With the fabric that was left, she got out a glue gun and covered her shoes.
She brings a whole new meaning to the adjective “tacky.” I wonder if she realizes that people aren’t staring out of envy but out of mortification for her!

It was a spoof of “Gone With the Wind” called “Went With The Wind”. Carol played a Scarlett O’Hara character who tore down velvet drapes in her Southern mansion to make a dress. But when she descended the staircase, you saw that she had forgotten to remove the brass curtain rod which was now across her shoulders. It was to die for! Classic Carol Burnett and one of the reasons she will always be a classic. And yes, Carol’s curtain rod dress looked better than this disaster.
Ah thanks for the trip down memory lane! Love Carol Burnett! And if only the optical illusion would make her entire body disappear is what Kanye is thinking…

I believe Carol Burnett’s dress was designed by Bob Mackie, and it may have been made from the drapes but it was far more fashionable than Kim will ever be.
I like the dress, not the print. The print is awful. However, I just watched the video of Kanye West performing at the Met Gala last night and I love that he serenaded Kim saying “don’t worry about what people say, I think you’re awesome.” That was very sweet.
Sweet? What is sweet about announcing to a room full of people that he knows no one likes you and thinks you’re gross, but you’re OK in my book. Ahh, his perfect Bitch. Kanye is such a romantic.

Definitely agree re Kim. But let’s be honest — the minute they started letting celebs in, the Met Gala ceased to have any “elite” status the way it used to. Here’s a theory: Someone told Kim tha most pregnant women would opt for an outfit that had a slimming effect, but if she really wanted to be edgy she should just do the opposite and wear the most unflattering ensemble possibke.

The flower pattern is ugly no matter who wears it, but at least Michelle Obama has the figure to pull off a dress that looks like your grandmother’s couch. Her dress is also lighter and has fewer flowers. Kim’s sleeve gloves made the dress go from just ugly to probably the ugliest dress in the history of fashion.

It definitely had to he a last minute choice and/or alteration because the dress has grommet detailing that would have looked beautiful with the punk theme. Floral + grommet would be a nice girly meets punk look. All of that extra fabric completely ruins the look. Too much effing fabric. She completely wrecked this look. I never expect anyone to look like they’re attending the Oscars and if they do they’re missing the point of the Met Gala. The idea behind Kim’s look isn’t weird, it was just awfully executed.

I don’t hate the dress. I just think the slit looks bad because her legs and feet are so swollen, she should have left that leg hidden. The long sleeves are ok as well minus the gloved hands. And her make up and hair look beautiful.

Kanye’s “mad” because she “ruined a beautiful piece of art”…Kanye can suck it. Maybe he should let her dress herself again, because since she’s hooked up with him she has only had one fashion atrocity after another. Kim’s style was always body conscious and sexy and it worked for her back then – why he keeps stuffing her into supposed “high-fashion” trash is beyond me. The looks do not work on her. At all. Never thought I’d miss Kim in any way, but I actually miss the old Kim.

I agree. Before Kanye, Kim could actually dress herself really well. She had awesome street style. But since “dating” Kanye (I’m beginning to think their relationship is a bit of a sham), she has worn one bad outfit after the other. I think the dress she wore to the Met Gala actually fit her very well, but the pattern was atrocious. And the matching gloves and matching shoes were hideous too.
First time, I’ve ever heard of a motel bed spread described as a beautiful piece of art.
She’s never dressed that well. She has a long history of fashion disasters behind her. She has terrible taste and now she is under the influence of someone with even worse taste. I agree she was slightly better when she dressed herself but she can afford a stylist, she should hire one.

I think its interesting, the optical illusion gloves especially were a risk, but were quite visually engaging. I think she made a significant effort into planning and executing this look. She’s pregnant, and probably had input from Kanye, Anna and many others. I’m sure she felt insecure last night. I have empathy for her.

No, I could find none. In fact he looked disgusted when he was caught looking at her belly. There was a picture of them on the stairs and Kim had to grab his shoulder because he didn’t help her at all. Now, compare them to Amar’e Stoudemire and his fiancee Alexis. He really looked like a beaming daddy-to-be, constantly smiling and putting his hand protectively on her belly. Body language does speak volume.

What work ethic does Kim have? Strolling around LA, Miami, London, NY or someplace else? Flying off to attend a party that she is paid to attend? Her pre-Kanye style was so much more adequate than what she’s been wearing lately. I think she tries so hard to please others and come off edgy that it has completely backfired, making her look like a buffoon. Even Kanye with all his extravagant costumery on stage didn’t stay on theme, he kept it pretty classic, so why would he sit by and let Kim make such a fool of herself? I don’t buy this, “she’s pregnant and can’t wear this or that.” During Hallie Berry’s first and now, current pregnancy she’s always looked good. No one should be shamed into making horrible sartorial choices just because they are pregnant…that’s very disgraceful on the part of the stylist or whomever is advising Kim.

Not knocking Kim’s weight (she is pregnant).. but I wonder how that dress would look on someone that was not pregnant and thinner. I hated the matching shoes.. she is a pretty woman, and that dress was not doing her any favors. But she was not the only one that looked terrible. I think the problem is Kim likes to think of herself as a fashionista and when you do you open yourself to more scrutiny.
