Sean Parker fined 2.5 mill by environmental groups for 9 mill wedding

You may know Sean Parker as the guy who founded Napster, was an early investor in Facebook, and had a cameo in The Italian Job. His role in The Social Network was played by Justin Timberlake. Parker is a tech investor worth $2 billion. Unlike Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who is worth $14 billion, he’s not reticent about flaunting his massive wealth.

Remember Zuckerberg’s quiet backyard wedding with friends and low-key honeymoon in Italy? Zuckerberg’s down-to-earth wedding looks even more admirable compared to the ridiculous blowout that Parker just had. It cost an estimated $9 million and featured a stone gate that cost $600,000 to construct, flowers costing a million dollars alone, and costumes for all of the 300 guests, made by the costume designer for Lord of The Rings. It wasn’t a medieval theme, though, and Parker insisted “the wardrobe we’re giving wedding guests is essentially modern. This is not a ‘theme’ wedding, and there will be nothing medieval about it.” He was responding to this story in The NY Post which was based on his “save the date” cards.

The wedding happened over the weekend and People Mag has more details for us. The bride, singer/songwriter Alexandra Lenas, wore Ellie Saab and the couple’s infant daughter attended.

Officiated by Rev. John A. Buehrens, the wedding took place at The Ventana Inn in Big Sur, Calif. Lenas wore a gown by Elie Saab, while Parker, 33, the couple’s infant daughter Winter Victoria and the guests were dressed by Academy Award-winning costume designer Ngila Dickson.

Assisting with the nuptials were designer Ken Fulk, caterer Paula LeDuc and designer Preston Bailey, who did the flowers. Photographs were snapped by Mark Seliger.

Guests enjoyed cake from Perfect Endings as well as music by Loreena McKennitt and The Good The Bad and The Ginger.

The event was rumored to be one of Silicon Valley’s most expensive weddings, reportedly costing $9 million.

Parker – who made billions from Napster and Facebook and was portrayed by Justin Timberlake in the film The Social Network – is said to have staged his nuptials on a spot resembling a Hollywood set, complete with fake waterfalls, bridges and ruins.

[From People]

It sounds romantic but I can’t wrap my mind around the fact that it cost $9 million. I guess that’s a drop in the bucket to these people.

While planning an elaborate wedding that cost more than some low budget movies, no one bothered to get permits for any of the work being done. Plus the construction was potentially damaging to local wildlife. So Parker just settled with wildlife officials for an additional $2.5 million.

Sean Parker’s massive $10 million wedding was a MENACE to sensitive fish and plants in Big Sur … and he NEVER got proper permits for any of it … so claims wildlife officials who have settled with the Facebook billionaire for $2.5 million.

Parker struck the agreement with the California Coastal Commission after agents were tipped that he built a wedding site the size of a massive movie set in an ecologically sensitive area — cabins, dance floor, staircases, waterfalls — all without permits.

By the time coastal officials investigated, the structures had already been built … but they let the wedding go on as scheduled. The 33-year-old Parker tied the knot Saturday with singer-songwriter Alexandra Lenas.

[From TMZ]

All of that just makes me appreciate Mark Zuckerberg more. When you have that kind of money and the sky’s the limit, people get carried away. Congratulations to Parker and Lenas.

While I was searching for photos for this story I found this priceless one of the couple’s early years.

    That dress is stunning!

  2. DanaG says:

I love that dress too. But it’s one expensive wedding wonder how long it will last for? Just because you have the money doesn’t mean you need to waste it in such an extravagent fashion. The fact they didn’t care about the wildfire or nature show someone with little regard for anyone but themselves. I wonder if he actually donates any money?

    • Annie says:

Yeah not caring about the wildlife was extremely douchey.

But it is his money. We can’t tell him how to spend it. I’m sure that really poor people across the world would be surprised at how much we spend on cellphones, flatscreens, etc. Everyone sees things from their own perspective. To him this is just pocket change.

    • Liza Jane says:

I find it kinda ironic that there are all the comments about ‘it’s his money etc’ …when a few posts back you are all vilifying Kate Cambridge for her lack of royal work??? Kate who though very wealthy, re-cycles clothes and wears dressed etc from the High Street, who is frugal and classy, but this over the top American gets a shrug and an “oh well” !!!

      • Zoid says:

Well, he earned his money. I’m not saying its right, what he did, but the earlier poster was just saying he earned it, he can have a 9 mill dollar wedding if he wants too. Kate’s ‘earnings’ are… Debatable. Her spending sure isnt, girlfriend loves to shop.

      • TG says:

Don’t think for a second that the Duchess isn’t getting her high street clothes tailored to perfection when she could have gotten a designer dress Taylor’s to her for the same price by the time all is said and done. You think those cute Topshop dresses look that good on everyone straight off the rack? But I do agree with your sentiment. This guy is an assh*le for sure.

      • TG says:

@Erinn- don’t you just love how the parents and grandparents want you to have a real wedding claiming it is special for them at YOUR cost? If someone wants me to have a nice wedding they can pay for it otherwise I will do what I want which is what I did paid about $100 bucks and gots tried at the courthouse 7 years ago. Just the two of us.

      • Suze says:

They aren’t the same things at all. Somebody spending the money they earned is different from someone spending money they didn’t earn – no matter how frugal or how extragavant the display.

Spending that much on a wedding is vulgar. But plenty of people find the royals and their constant celebration of themselves plenty vulgar, too.

  3. Erinn says:

If Justin Timberlake and Seth Rogan had a baby, it’d be Sean Parker.

Jesus… I can’t even imagine spending that much money on a WEDDING.

We’re in the planning stages right now; trying to book stuff. Our biggest expense is the photographer because that’s all you’re going to be keeping forever, really. And that’s costing around 2100. I’m using a ring my grandmother left me for a wedding band, spending well under 1000 on a dress (aiming for 500), and it’s going to be a potluck style reception. I even don’t like spending as much as we are. 9 Million is so so wasteful.

    • MojoRising says:

And it’s going to be beautiful. Congratulations.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      Congrats, Erinn 🙂
I’m sure your wedding will be amazing.

It’s about the union you will have with your husband for the rest of your life, not about the ceremony that precedes it IMO.

      • Erinn says:

Exactly! I’d love to skip the whole thing and just get a justice of the peace right now…but it’s probably the only wedding my last remaining grandparent will see as far as her grandchildren go, and I know it means a lot to them to have a “real” one. All I want out of it is to be married to my best friend, wear a pretty dress, and have some nice photos.

    • IzzyB says:

Just a hint: my friend has a champagne coloured ball gown she bought at Debenhams for £150 and it’s beautiful. Bridal stores are such a rip off.

Congratulations and good luck with your wedding 🙂 It sounds lovely

      • Erinn says:

I bet that’s beautiful! I’ve been looking online a lot. What I want to do is go to a salon I know a couple hours away that tends to have really great deals, and find out what style suits my body…then ebay/google the shit out of it haha. Unless of course I can find something at a good price at the store.

I’d muuuuchhh rather be spending my money on the pets, the house and gardening ( I realllyyyy want a pergola on our deck ). I think the Mr. lucked out that I’m not super high maintenance haha

    • yolo112 says:

Congrats, Erinn!! I love love and wish you a lifetime of it!! =)

..I were on a budget of $25,000, so I gotta agree with everyone…I really can’t get my mind around the $9M price point.. Just because you got it, doesn’t mean you should spend it all crazy like.. but who are we to tell some dude how to spend his dollahs!? **jealousbitches** 😉

      • Erinn says:

Exactly… plus we just bought a house. So I mean, wedding isn’t my priority spending wise at the moment. I’ve got an amazing photographer, and I’m pretty darn crafty, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem. I’m a web designer, so I’m designing our invites, and having them printed online.

Our budget is under 5k for sure, and I don’t think it’ll hit that much.

I do live in a pretty small Nova Scotian town though, so the costs to get married around here are pretty darn cheap in comparison to a lot of the places in the ‘states.

    • littlestar says:

Sean Parker’s wedding sounds tacky as hell to me. Your wedding however, Erinn, sounds like it will be lovely! Especially in Nova Scotia (I live in good ol’ Sask, haven’t been to the Martimes, hoping to go to PEI next summer so I can get my Anne of Green Gables fix lol). My fiancé and I are getting married in November, decided to go to Vegas with just the people we are closest too. Damn do weddings sure add up fast! We’re trying to stick to a budget too, but it’s hard not being tempted by all those little extra add-ons lol. Good luck with your planning. I know if I had $9mill just laying around, I definitely would have better things to spend it on than a wedding :D.

    • jennipurrr says:

Go to designthedress (either on etsy or their website) – you can give them any picture of a dress that you like and they will build it for you. Most are around $750. They will do any specific thing that you like. Holla Nova Scotia, I’m in BC. 🙂

  4. amanda says:

Yikes. Maybe its my cell but her hair and makeup in that last photo is all kinds of awful.

  5. teehee says:

WOW does that guy look like a complete a$s or what… you can just see it oozing from his face 😛

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

He emanates d-baggery. The old photo of the two of them is HYSTERICAL-he looks like such a Cali bro…

      • Chory says:

I think they’re dressed as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake? He’s looking JT during N’Sync days. She’s wearing the costume from Britney’s MTV movie awards when she sang Ooops I did it again. I’m, um, a really huge Britney fan. Also, Sean Fanning introduced her that year wearing a Metallica t-shirt because Metallica was all mad at Napster.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Oh well at least that makes it a bit more tolerable, knowing they’re in costume.

I still think he’s douchey though.

      • Chory says:

I wonder what came first, JT playing Sean Parker, or Sean Parker dressing up as JT. Either way, I’m pretty happy that whomever came second didn’t create a massive vortex of douche that could have sucked us all into an alternate universe where Kanye is the Emperor and our national past times include spray tanning and tweeting selfies with your cash money.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        LMAO!!! 😀

      • Chordy says:

Also, I typed fast and forgot the d in my name LOL!

    • Liv says:

I find their wedding picture super cheesy. In a forest, seriously? Are they Bella and Edward or what?

And it can’t be coincidence that he was played by Timberlake – douche alarm!

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

It’s pretty Fromage 2013, but to each his lameness. That’s just–it’s just SO much money. Why? It’s kind of gross. I just don’t understand.

Forgot about getting those permits, huh? Whoops!

      • TrustMeOnThis says:

Not only that but they had to damage and destroy parts of the forest because it wasn’t pretty enough for them. What a couple of asshats. The Atlantic had a good article about this.

  6. GeeMoney says:

$9 million for a wedding? Geez. I wish I had that kind of money to burn.

    • V4Real says:

9 million for a wedding; I’m wondering how much the divorce is going to cost him? 🙂

    • aims says:

Even if I had the money, I still wouldn’t do it. People get so wrapped up in the wedding that they forget about the marriage.

  7. smee says:

Once again proving that money does not equal taste.

  8. Jrd says:

Not to nitpick but it was Napster inventor Sean Fanning who made a cameo in The Italian Job.

  9. MojoRising says:

If you ever wanted to know what it means to be an a**hole… THAT is an a**hole. People in suffering everywhere, especially right now in OK. So much good could have been done. A**HOLE.

    • brin says:

      Agreed.

    • Leigh says:

      Agree 100%.

Imagine the good that could have been done with that kind of money?! How completely narcissistic to spend it on their wedding.

If you want to be ridiculous about it – spend a million, the other 8 could change the lives of so many people in need! Unreal.

    • Green Is Good says:

An obscene flaunting of wealth. No class.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      Yeah….all of this.

    • all_in_all_good says:

and I imagine you donate money everyday for a good cause so it gives u the right to insult people? or you are such good friends with him that you know for a fact that he doesn’t give a portion of his 2 billion to charity??? please…

      • MojoRising says:

Actually, I do give and I take in rescue dogs to the point that it hurts financially. So, I am entitled to my opinion. Thank you for your snark. Have a nice day.

      • someone says:

aaaaaandd MojoRising wins for comment of the day! 🙂

      • Leigh says:

Yeah. I donate to charity as well …and you can bet your ass if I had that kind of money I would do something REAL with it rather than just blow it on some overrated party. If I could go back in time, I’d go to city hall for my own and save the measly 10K we spent on ours so I could do something positive with it as well.

      • Chory says:

I’ll admit it. I’m pretty lazy. Although I’m also too lazy to destroy forest ecosystems for a day dedicated to my own vanity.

    • Emily C. says:

      Exactly.

And to the people saying it’s his money, he can do with it what he likes — I suppose, in our society, that is technically almost true. But in terms of right and wrong, oh heck no. More money = more responsibility. Unfortunately, some people seem to think the more power and money you have, the less responsibility you need to take.

    • Aud says:

      Oh please.
Because it doesn’t suit your own personal set of morals, then it automatically makes him an a-hole?
      It’s not logical.
It’s his money and he can do what he likes with it.
Now if the US had a decent taxation system that taxed the wealthier portion of society higher, than that would be adequate. But it’s not the case is it?
America is a nation that taxes a low income worker at a higher percentage than the shrewd [read: pays accountants to keep taxes down] 1%er.
For the record, I don’t agree with the idea of a 9 million dollar wedding, but it’s not ‘our money’ to decide what he does with it.
I can only think of how many children can have immunisations with that much money and he’s gone and spent 9 million to please a woman.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

“For the record, I don’t agree with the idea of a 9 million dollar wedding, but it’s not ‘our money’ to decide what he does with it.”

I never understand this argument. How are we deciding how he can spend his own money? HE ALREADY HAD THE $9M DOLLAR WEDDING. None of stopped him and none of us wanted to. We simply have an opinion about how wasteful that is. It’s a gossip blog. It’s free speech. Deal with it.

      • Marigold says:

“Because it doesn’t suit your own personal set of morals, then it automatically makes him an a-hole?
        It’s not logical.
It’s his money and he can do what he likes with it.”

Yup. That’s exactly what I’m saying. I think he’s an entitled shithead for spending that kind of money on ONE DAY and I think his morals are jacked. You can call it illogical until the cows come home but I encourage you to look into the psychology of morality. His compass is wonked up.

And, just FYI-I never said he couldn’t do what he wants with his money. I just thinks he’s a jackass for doing what he did with it.

      • Suze says:

Of course he can spend it any way he chooses.

And we can snark on him all the day long for it.

  10. SRM says:

It makes my ill to hear of this kind of money being spent on a wedding when I think of how clean water is a luxury for so many in the world. I know it’s their money and they have a right to spend it how they wish but it’s still hard to stomach.

That being said, I love the Justin and Briteny pic. Her waist is so tiny!!! I wonder if that was before or after Justin played him.

  11. Word says:

I’m a huge LOTR nerd so he kinda gets a pass from me. Hopefully no animals were harmed. He really knows how to throw money around. Congrats to the couple

  12. Annie says:

It’s tacky to flaunt your wealth like that. But at the same time he has so much money that it’s like, well why shouldn’t he? It’s his money and he’s probably going to die without spending most of it. I would try to enjoy it too. Life is short. I’d just make sure to also donate money to good causes or do good things with it, build hospitals, something. I hope he does charity work too but he seems like a scumbag.

  13. all_in_all_good says:

the comments here…it kills me. When you earn that much money as he did then you can do whatever you want with it, give it away or spend it who cares??? It’s his EARNED money and if he wants a wedding on the moon he can have it…

criticizing someone because he spent 9 mil on his wedding is just ridiculous, it’s his money to do with it as he pleases so just chillax

and I haven’t heard about him at all so I don’t see how he is flaunting his money in our face since I have no idea what his life is like, unlike some rich people that I have to see everyday in the news…

    • Pia says:

It has nothing to do with the numbers for me. He did all of these things without permits. Permits he may have not gotten for good reasons had he actually applied for them. Not to mention if someone with much less money had done the same thing, the whole thing would have been dismantled immediately. Having oodles of money doesn’t mean you get to treat the planet like you own it. The environment doesn’t care how much money you spent to damage it. Not to mention the sheer WASTE of materials, and the gall to dress all of your guests, because they are apparently too stupid to do it right themselves.

      • *unf* Joan Jett says:

“Having oodles of money doesn’t mean you get to treat the planet like you own it. The environment doesn’t care how much money you spent to damage it”

        THIS!

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Some people would clear cut the sky if given the opportunity.

    • Aud says:

You’re not wrong. It is his money.
      It’s just, I don’t know…ridiculous.
It’s a wedding, not a few transplant organs to save his life.
I hope he has a prenup. With a wedding this expensive, imagine what a divorce settlement can go for?

    • Marigold says:

When it’s a detriment to wildlife, I don’t care who you are or how well-lined your pockets are, you shouldn’t be able to do whatever you want.

    • Nerd Alert says:

Just because the money is rightfully his, doesn’t mean he earned it. I just don’t think there’s anything anyone can do to earn that much money.

      • all_in_all_good says:

what about google, facebook, youtube etc…it was someone’s idea that became reality and therefore brought them a large amount of money….ergo=they earned that money by coming up with something that didn’t exist…what about Bill Gates, do u think he didn’t earn his money? the sums are crazy but those kind of businesses today will bring u billions

      • Nerd Alert says:

Yeah, that’s exactly what I said. I said their money is rightfully theirs, right? I acknowledge that in a capitalist society people often become billionaires, and the money is rightfully theirs.

        EARNING implies deserving the money.

No matter what anyone does, nobody can deserve that much money IMO. Not Bill Gates, not Warren Buffett, not Mitt Romney, not the pope. Nobody. The system is skewed to favor these people, so due to interest and tax laws most of their money is not that which they earned.

At least Bill Gates and Warren Buffett give away more than half of theirs, like they should.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Exactly. Just because he’s a billionaire does not make him above the law.

    • m says:

I agree all_in_all_good. Its his money, let him spend it.

Regarding environmental impact…the fact is he probably did not organize the wedding at all, planners did. Absolutely they should have gotten him the correct permits but they didn’t, so he paid millions in restitution. At least he is taking responsibility for his mistake, unlike so many.

And yes he could donate that money overseas but he spent $9 million in the US and that fed a number of businesses and other business owners.

No question it is excess but at when the wealthy spends, it helps the economy much more than when they let it sits in a bank account.

      • jwoolman says:

Exactly. The only way to waste money is to burn it. That 9 million ultimately pays the rent and buys groceries and school expenses etc for huge numbers of people. The lack of permits etc can be attributable to ignorance on the planner’s part, but he’s making restitution.

      • Adrien says:

Of course, he can always pay everyone off after recklessly building medieval props in the woods. I don’t care if he spends millions to his wedding, that money will create jobs for some people but that $2.5M fine Parker paid is the waste. It’s for revegatating Big Sur’s slow growing redwood trees. There’s is no guarantee that all the replanted trees would grow successfully. That amount could have gone to somewhere more useful not reconstructing a damaged forest which could have been avoided if they got permits.

    • Joanna says:

I agree with you. he can spend it how he wants. that would be like someone telling me I cant get a pedicure, i should donate the money to charity. no matter how much or how little it is, it’s his money to spend!

      • Adrien says:

The infuriating part was not the amount of money he spent for the wedding. It’s that they (Parker and Ventanna) disregarded park use rules so they can have that dream GoT type wedding with the thought that they can always pay for damages since Parker is a billionaire. Phew! $2.5M fine is a slap on the wrist. We can always replace the rare, centuries old redwoods, right?

  14. hadleyb says:

Wait .. I thought he dumped his long time GF to hook up with this new chick who got pregnant very early in the relationship and now married. She’s 24? If he was with her for years he got with her when she was 16??

  15. annaloo. says:

Gawd, some people just waste so much money.

    • Tapioca says:

Well, you could argue that grotesque celebrity spending at least creates jobs – better to throw your money away on a ridiculous wedding than hoard it in the bank.

And if they divorce and he does it all again, so much better for the economy!

      • Bodhi says:

I’m sure the LOTR costumer is totally hurting for work

      • annaloo. says:

That’s a good way of looking at it. I still– just, maybe because I’m too pragmatic– even if I had that level of money – don’t think I could justify spending that much on any party.

  16. lin234 says:

It’s his money to spend so he can spend it however he wants. However, I read elsewhere that everything that was built will be taken down afterwards. That is just a complete waste – especially the million dollars in plants. That would be the real shame. He should keep it up just so other people could enjoy it. After all, the damage has been already done, bigger waste to destroy everything after the fact.

Her dress is divine and those huge trees beats a castle backdrop any day.

  17. homegrrl says:

No amount of money can replace the lives of the helpless species and the habitats destroyed. I can’t believe the wedding was allowed to continue. They should have NOT allowed the wedding AND charged them a fine.
How can a love life be built upon death and destruction of a vulnerable population? This couple started out on BAD LUCK, and BAD KARMA?
Money can buy that, for certain.

  18. Tania says:

She wears a lot of wigs/hairpieces. I don’t understand why.

  19. Mew says:

There are loads and loads of ppl who don’t even have clean water to drink and this dude spends 9 million without a second though on a wedding plus destroying some nature, who cares, few millions there too and it’s all cool. Makes me so not to want to live on this planet. Oh well.

    • Ag says:

I totally agree. There are kids going hungry, and he spends 9mil on a wedding, and people here are saying it’s ok because he’s earned it, so it’s his money to blow. It’s just gross for someone to spend so much just because they can.

  20. Nicolette says:

When you’re worth 2 billion, I guess 9 million is peanuts to you. But what on earth could cost that much for a wedding? In a time when a lot of people are hurting it does seem even more over the top, but who are we to say how he spends his money. However, it must be a lot of fun to be a bride planning a wedding where the sky is the limit, and there is no such thing as a budget!

The photo of them is beautiful, I love the gown and the setting.

    • lin234 says:

I’m guessing they covered the costs of guests staying at the resort? They probably closed down the place for a couple days. Some of the mega-rich also cover traveling expenses too. Since they had outfits specially made just for the wedding, it’s not too far off that they covered other costs for their guests.

It’s a ton of money but it gave a lot of business to the area too. Shouldn’t we encourage the wealthy to spend rather than have it in the bank?

  21. Mar says:

Sorry but any wedding that obnoxiously overdone to the point where they affect the environment in a bad way is not cool to me. Losers

    • KellyF says:

I don’t care what kind of wedding he throws, it’s not polite to tell people what to wear to your wedding. But I bet the cake was delicious.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

He also tweeted, “Just because we don’t trust our guests to dress themselves properly doesn’t mean we want them to look like #GoT characters.”

        Yeah…bit of a control freak I think…

      • Emily C. says:

I’d never be friends with someone who told me how to dress.

Well, I guess if he was a billionaire and I had some hope of getting some of that money, I might. Pretty sad when you have to buy your friends.

  22. moon says:

Well. If you have the money, I can’t begrudge what you choose to do with it. At least it’s money he earned for himself, not some inheritance.

  23. lucy2 says:

The wedding photo is unique and pretty, but I can’t see spending that kind of money on a one day event, no matter how wealthy you are. I am on board with living well and enjoying your success, but at some point it gets grotesque and extravagant, and I think they went way past that point.

Hopefully the $2.5 mil fine will do some good for protecting wildlife and the area. It doesn’t sound like they actually caused damage, but who knows, jerk move to not bother getting permits.

  24. Bopit says:

    What A-HOLES.

I can’t wait for the price tag on the divorce.

  26. Madpoe says:

$9 million to get married? I wonder how much the divorce will cost. Which I shall get back to when I’m done laughing my ass off!

  27. Ag says:

    What a douche.

  28. Elly says:

    beautiful dress… beautifil picture! WOW!!!!

    …but all the money…

  29. diva says:

9 mil is a lot but hey if you got it. They are an interesting looking couple.

  30. Holden says:

Where was the wedding? $2.5 million goes a long way in our park system, so I thank him for his narcissistic donation.

  31. Nerd Alert says:

Douchey to spend that much money on a wedding, for sure. Tacky, too. But hey…the guests got free clothes!

But Zuckerberg is a historically bad tipper. I can’t like someone who’s a bad tipper.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

      I hate that.

I’ve heard the same thing about David Byrne, Michael Moore and of course, Micheal Jordan, who sometimes doesn’t tip at all. If that isn’t the definition of a dick-slap, what is? Charles Barkley is supposed a pretty stellar tipper.

I have a friend who lived in Texas for a little while and worked at a restaurant. I don’t remember who the guy was, but he was a moderately successful rapper in 2006. He comes with his entourage which, if memory serves, amounted to her serving twelve people. Not only did they stay for half the day, but the only tip she got was the change left over from one of the twenties. The girl got a tip that was less than a dollar fifty when they had her running around for half the day. That would be bad enough in Canada because our tipping system is way different, but in America that’s Olympic-level bullshit considering the server’s hourly wage, right? I could never be a waitress in the States, I’d be throwing pie at patrons’ heads by day four.

      • Nerd Alert says:

Ugh, I hate it, too. You’re right, that’s a huge pile of BS, especially if they stayed a long time. I cannot stand people who are poor tippers, especially given the wages servers get here. I’ve stopped seeing two men after the first or second date because they were bad tippers. And those were just ordinary men with average jobs.

These people have more money than they need or deserve, it makes me sick that they stiff the wait staff. I’ve also heard the same of Beyonce, Sean Peen, and Jeremy Piven, but I thought they were all assholes before I found that out.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

How a man treats his server and how he treats his mother, these are the things to which you pay attention if you’re looking for a romantic future with a guy. I’m not a pill about it, but there have been a couple of times wherein I’ve nudged a friend with and whispered, ‘dig deeper, buddy’.

And though I don’t any of those people that you listed from Adam (obviously), for whatever reason, not one person on your list surprises me. Pseudo-Bill Gates was right, you DON’T become rich by writing a lot of checks.

        Sad.

      • Nerd Alert says:

My mother always told me never to go on a second date with a man who treats a server poorly. “A man who is not nice to [wait staff] is not a nice man. Period.”

Coincidentally, I learned to look at the way a man treats his mother from my brothers. She is a pain, and they dote on her like my father taught them.

If I’m out with someone who stiffs a server, I leave a couple of bucks on my chair and try to weigh it down with the salt when the person’s not looking.

Zuckerberg is no angel. FB is still full of misogynist, racist, homophobic BS (including a page offering sex with prostitutes in India) and when people report it they are told there’s nothing wrong, while in the meantime they’ve cracked down on breastfeeding images.

    gorgeous dress!!

people spend their money how they want–but putting animals in danger is not cool…he paid his fine, so Congrats!

  33. Ginger says:

Hmmm…I just dropped some major cash on my dream car yesterday. I’ve been salivating over this car for years and when the opportunity came to acquire it I jumped on it. It’s the most expensive purchase I’ve ever made aside from my education. But when you compare both of these things to a $9 million dollar wedding of billionaires…I think my debt is probably what they might spend on a night in an expensive hotel or costumes for 300 guests??? Pretty over the top and I don’t agree with it at all but it’s their money. I guess they can spend frivolously if they want to do so. So what’s the happy medium here? Zuckerberg is cheap and Parker is lavish…

  34. Bijlee says:

9 million. Wow. I could change so many lives with 9 million.

Also while it’s nice that zuckerberg had a small, quiet, low key wedding. He’s still a jerk. The way he runs his company is disgusting. Things at Facebook need to change especially with what they allow on Facebook groups and not. It’s truly disturbing what Facebook allows under the notion of freedom of speech, but bans to protect decency. And yes, I put the blame on zuckerberg. He needs to change things pronto.

  35. The Original G says:

Another example of how esy it is to rip rich naccisists off. what a great business model.

  36. Barbara says:

My eldest son got married there. Sure did not cost him that much..lol
Actually he was working there so he got some perks of course.

  37. Just Me says:

All that money on a wedding dress & the photographer cut the damn dress off in the photo. This would’ve been such a lovely shot.

  38. taxi says:

In the pic from early years” it looks as if she’s wearing those big wax lips we used to get for Halloween.

  39. Jess says:

That is a staggering amount of money and it’s shocking that someone would attempt that kind of construction without concern for its impact or permits, etc, however… I do think that spending money in any way is better than hoarding it as many of these guys do. A good chunk of it made its way into the local economy and created jobs for people. Of course there are better ways to spend 9mil and have a positive and long-lasting economic impact but I think it’s easy to forget that every time a rich person hires help or buys something it’s money coming out from under the mattress (or out of potentially sketchy investments) where it does no good at all.

  40. Kaboom says:

That’s 9 million injected into the economy vs. money sitting in a bank or getting used to speculate on oil. This is a GOOD thing. Geez.

  41. Suze says:

Sheesh, build something, have your trashy over the top control-freak wedding in it, and then donate it as a homeless shelter or soup kitchen or art center or drug rehab center.

I’d cut you some slack if that were the case.

  42. Haystacks says:

Eh…the wedding industry employs a lot of people. So does construction. The real thing that makes him a douche is that he damaged the natural wildlife and didn’t care. I am glad they fined him.

  43. ax says:

How many kids could you vaccine with 9 million?
We as a species have no hope.

  44. Cazzee says:

That’s nothing compared to what the divorce will cost!

  45. Nev says:

why not just create a SET?!!!!!!

why distrub the poor wildlife etc?!!!!

    NAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

  46. Catlady says:

Good lord, his wife looks like Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones in both the wedding photo and this one:

    • Patty says:

I must disagree. His wife looks nothing like Daenerys Targaryen. That would suggest that she looks like Emilia Clarke and she most certainly does not. She does look like a cosplay enthusiast though.

    • Kristine says:

Nope. The only thing similar is the hair.

  47. Leah says:

As tacky as this all sounds, I am green with envy over them having had Loreena McKennitt sing at their wedding. She has the most divine voice.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

She lives about half an hour away from where I’m living for the time being. That’s Stratford–same as Bieber’s home town–but I think she’s from Manitoba, or something. She’s definitely devoted to her mystique.

      • TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

Just out of curiousity: Is “devoted to her mystique” a nice way of saying “she’s a little loony/obsessed with this whole earth mama thing” or does it mean she has a big ego?

  48. Kristine says:

If you have 2 billion why not spend 9 mil on a wedding? You can afford it.

I didn’t care until I read that he didn’t get permits and just went ahead and built shit on Big Sur, endangering the wildlife. That shit is NOT cool with me.

Whatever. I think he and Zuckerberg are both cunts.

  49. sala says:

Their wedding doesn’t seem romantic to me, just embarrassing. From the stagey-Harlequin-novel inspired wedding photo, to dressing their guests.
I know we all have different ideas regarding how best to celebrate/throw a party and that’s as it should be – how boring if not – but even so I can’t help cringing a bit at the description of this wedding.
