A highlight montage featuring Jennifer Lopez’s unceremonious start. More videos are below
The more laid back Golden Globes returned this year after a hiatus due to the writer’s strike in 2008. The Globes didn’t include many clip montages apart from a tribute to Steven Spielberg and lacked the elite aura of the Oscars. They were much shorter, though, and included enough star power and amusing moments to encourage you to sit through the whole thing.
Slumdog Millionaire, 30 Rock, and Kate Winslet were the big winners last night. Here’s a link to the list of winners. Highlights included plenty of drunken presenters and winners and some
Drunk presenters and Tracy Morgan’s acceptance speech
Several presenters were visibly drunk at the Golden Globes, which added some uncomfortable levity to an otherwise routine awards ceremony.
Some of the most obviously drunk presenters were Blake Lively, (link leads to video) who swayed on stage a suffered a few moments silence before Seth Rogan Rainn Wilson read the nominees for her, and Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, who both slurred and looked like they had great buzzes they were trying to cover up with their superb acting skills. Most of us have been there.
Tracy Morgan accepted the Globe for “30 Rock” in a funny rambling speech in which he called himself the “face of post-racial America” and added “deal with it, Cate Blanchett.”
Demi Moore’s see-through dress
Demi Moore presented the award for best supporting actor and first gave a shout out to her daughter, Rumer Willis, Miss Golden Globe, telling her how proud she was and reminding her not to slouch. It was hard to pay attention to anything Moore was saying, though, because I was staring at her nips poking through her tight dress. Heath Ledger won the award and earned a standing ovation during a touching speech by director Chris Nolan.
Tina Fey’s Acceptance Speech
Tina Fey may have been drinking some of the champagne but she was still funny as hell in her acceptance speech for best actress (link leads to video) in a TV comedy. She gave a shout out to all her Internet haters, calling out some of them by name and telling them to “suck it”
“[If you feel] too good about yourself, they have this thing called the Internet, and you can find a lot of people there who don’t like you. I’d like to address some of them now. BabsonLaCrosse, you can suck it.” [via LATimes
Ricky Gervais’ excellent award introduction
Ricky Gervais was the best presenter with a funny schtick (link leads to video) that had me laughing several times. He joked that he slept around to get nominated for an award this year but was unsuccessful.
“I can’t believe I’m not nominated. What a waste of a campaign. Today is the last time I have sex with 200 middle-age journalists. It was horrible. Really. A lot of them didn’t even speak English. Europeans with wispy beards. The men were worse.” [via LATimes]
Johnny Depp’s too-cool presentaton
Johnny Depp presented the award for Best Actress: Comedy, which went to an emotional Sally Hawkins for Happy Go Lucky. He just read off the nominees without much fanfare but did it that sparse, disheleved way of his that made my heart beat a little faster without much effort on his part.
Kate Winslet forgetting that Angelina Jolie was nominated when calling out the other actresses
Angelina Jolie smiled instead of looking stoic as she lost out in the best actress category yet again, this time to Kate Winslet. Unlike the Critics Choice Awards, the camera didn’t cut away to her multiple times during the winner’s speech and the one time it did she was smiling graciously. Winslet made a major gaffe at the beginning of her speech, she said “I’m so sorry, Anne, Meryl, Kristin, Oh God who’s the other one… Angelina!” Angelina was laughing good-naturedly when the camera showed her reaction.
Winslet’s speech was very touching and brought tears to the eyes of her husband, director Sam Mendes, and her co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio. She said “Leo I’m so glad I can stand up here and tell you how much I love you, and how much I’ve loved you for 13 years.”
Mickey Rourke’s Acceptance Speech thanking his dogs
Mickey Rourke gave an acceptance speech for best actor that was both conversational and heartfelt. He first thanked his agent saying he put his career on the line for him. He also thanked the director of The Wrestler, Darren Aronofsky, for hiring him even though he couldn’t get insurance for Rourke. At the end of the speech was the best part, though, when he thanked his dogs past and present for helping him get through the lonely times. I have a much better opinion of this guy after listening to this speech.
Slumdog Millionaire producer Christian Colson getting beeped out at the end of the show
Christian Colson capped off a fun ceremony (link leads to video) by using the “F” word when he realized he was out of time and getting beeped out.
Photos of the red carpet are coming up shortly.
YAAAY the post is up! Enjoyable writeup too CB. I’m getting faster broadband at home soon so hopefully I’ll be able to catch up with the good speeches then.
I’d like send my congratulations out into the ethernetz to Colin Farrell (I won’t begrudge you so long as Brendan Gleeson gets the Oscar *wink*) and Gabriel Byrne on their wins – and to Martin McDonagh on the success of his first film. My commiserations (sp?) to Brendan and to Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but I’m delighted Gabriel’s talent was rewarded.
Yay for the lovely Laura Linney too! And of course a huge congrats to Danny Boyle and Kate W. Gosh, the European contingent really cleaned up in the film section didn’t they?
Kate, this is your year, hons! Drink it in. You deserve it.
Next stop, the Oscars!
I hated Kate Winslet’s acceptance speeches. She was WAY too overdramatic. This heavy breathing that never seemed to stop was way to much for my taste. I mean, I could understand that behaviour from Sally Hawkins, who genuinely seemed to be surprised and stunned, but KW who’s in the business for almost 20 years should have been a tiny bit more pulled together than that. I thought it was superficial acting, even hamming, on her part.
Overall, I was quite surprised with some of the winners. But I loved the fact that from all those high class stars, it was good ole Mickey Rourke you took the Globe for best actor home. What a message! And that Bruce won for best song was plain great! Simply deserveed. The show was quite entertaining and Tracy Morgan and Tina Fey made it special with their great speeches.
I’ll second Mairead on all the homegrown wins (although I’m disappointed for Brendan Gleeson, his IMO was the better performance) and add my congrats to Mickey Rourke and his heartfelt and very moving speech (love when bad boys come good!)
And really well done to Kate W – Oscar/s in the bag for her, I reckon.
Sarah…she has NEVER won. She has been nominated mostly every year, but never ever won. Plus, she’s english. They don’t shriek. They pause and bring their voice down 20 notches to sound sexy and breathless.
Plus, it could’ve been worse. I’m stocked for her, she has been deserving this for years upon years. Let her do her thing 🙂
I just watched “Revolutionary Road”, had to see what all the fuss is about. Good movie, really hit home. My boyfriend and I are at a similar cross-roads in our life, minus the over the top drama.
I just don’t get why everyone is so frickin shocked and speechless when they win these things. You didn’t find the cure to cancer. Thank who you want to thank and accept the award.
got my depp and rourke in one night
i missed a lot of the golden globes; got behind on things from watching football playoffs.
i read that sacha baron cohen had a great dig at madonna. gotta find that!
thought maggie gyllenhaal and demi moore looked the best.
drew barrymoore and renee z. need to fire their hair stylists asap!
Just a Clarification: “Some of the most obviously drunk presenters were Blake Lively, who swayed on stage a suffered a few moments silence before Seth Rogan read the nominees for her”
It was Rainn Wilson not Seth Rogan, Rogan would have been cooler but it was Wilson
Thanks CC! My memory failed me and I will correct it.
Kate Winslet deserves everything she gets. She will be a legend for sure. One of the best actresses of our time. Hope she wins an Oscar.
Kate W. – fabulous actress, so glad she won. Amazing, wonderful & beautiful.
Miley Cyrus – ugh. Hated how she kept sticking her tongue out at the camera. Totally inappropriate and the opposite of class.
Drew Barrymore – I loved her dress! The hair. Just No.
Ricky Gervais, Tina Fet, Tracey Morgan – hilarious!!!
Brangelina – ugh. They totally snubbed Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet. It is your JOB to do interviews, etc. so quit acting like you’re better than that. Obviously Angelina still held a grudge about Ryan for his 07 interview. Need to work on being gracious and not condescending. At least Angelina didn’t sneer at Kate for winning best actress.
Slumdog – YAY! Frieda is gorgeous.
Mickey Rourke – What a shocker! I love it when they shake it up at awards shows b/c I thought Sean had this one. Great acceptance speech. Looks like a total trainwreck though.
Emma Thompson – LOVE her. She was so gracious, happy, and clapping for all the winners. Angelina, this is how it’s done. Emma has really gained some weight though. Still beautiful.
Cameron – Was she stoned? With Drew? Still, her dress was cute and she is in great shape. Always wears nice colors.
Most out of place – Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus (she was a b@tch to the Jonas Bros on the red carpet with Ryan S. – grow up if your’re going to come to the ADULT EVENTS), Zac Efron and Vanessa. Go away and come back in 10 years.
Best boobies – Salma!
Most Workin’ It – Tom Cruise. He seriously bugs me, but at least he is gracious and kind…even if it’s fakey fakey and over the top.
Best coke reference – Colin Farrell. Hilarious! Also I loved his acceptance speech. I had no idea he was so articulate. I love him now; and almost forgive him for Alexander.
Go Gabriel Byrne! If you all haven’t watched In Treatment, you must. It’s incredible. Blair Underwood rocks in it too.
So glad that Benjamin Button didn’t win anything. I went into that movie expecting a lot; left feeling empty. It was all razzle dazzle (visually stunning) but shallow. I just didn’t care about Benjamin. Big let down.
Worst Hair and Worst Red Carpet Interview – Megan Fox. Did you see her interview with Ryan Seacrest?!?! Horrible. She was beyond self-deprecating. We get it, you’re nervous and you are insecure. EXCEPT to point out you have a size 22 waist. Right. Also, she totally trash talked her fiancee – utterly lacking in tact or class. Keep that sh@t at home. Also, her hair! It was pulled so tight her ears stuck out like Dumbo.
I’m glad Kate won. So what her speech was cringworthy, I rather have someone like that than someone who gets up there and just acts like it doesn’t mean anything to them. Shes been getting overseen for years, its her time I hope she finally gets her well deserved Oscar.
Kate Winslet is beautiful and a great actress but she needs to drop the crappy “faux shock” – she is at an awards ceremony for which she is nominated twice – why would she be surprised she won?
Come on Kate, who were you dumbing it down for?
The whole “loving Leo for 13 years” was cringing too – and tacking a cursory thanks to her husband – THE DIRECTOR!! – at the end? Shudder! Unless she wants to be thrice married, she might want to reconsider that part in her next acceptance!!!!
You would have thought Leo was her date because every time the camera settled on them through the night she had her hand on his thigh or was holding his hand!!!
Kimble, I noticed that too with Kate! – the part about her always being on camera with Leo and her love fest for him in her speech… I was sitting there yelling “don’t be Hilary Swank… don’t forget your husband!” to the TV. Was very happy for her though – she really deserved to win and she’s so awesome. Loved Ricky Gervias’ nudge to her role in Extra’s. Was hilarious!
Maybe I’m the only one who noticed it but Angelina did have fun playing to the camera last night. When they called Anne Hathaway’s name, they actually cut to Angie and she turned to Brad with a put on snarky smile and kept it for a second on camera. I laughed hard. She must read the internet after all 🙂
Speilberg’s speech was so inspiring (of course!) and it was great to see the power players in the old Hollywood network. For the last few years it has seemed that Hollywood has been about celebrity and not much else but this year, the movie industry really brought it back to talent and the art of movie making. I felt gratified and relieved… It’s a good thing when the bar is so high you really have no idea who might win because they all deserve it.
Great night. Looking forward to the Oscars.
mickey rourke’s speech was the best ever. so heartfelt & honest, and i love that he thanked his dogs.
Rogen lost so much weight he is virtually unrecognizable. How sad!
Gosh! Kate is ALWAYS going on about how much she loves leo!! I was thinking, “WHAT ABOUT YOUR HUSBAND?!?!?!?!” I swear.. something is going on between those two! And if it isn’t yet, it WILL!! Poor Sam!
I thought Kate’s speech was over the top as well. You didn’t win the nobel prize honey, just a golden globe! LoL! But she deserved the GG.
I noticed that too doodahs (Angie’s look to Brad) and it cracked me up!
And I nearly threw something at my tv when they kept showing Miley Cyrus sticking her tongue out at the camera. (Okay, not really, but I did cuss a bit.) It made me really glad that I don’t have kids.
Why did he say “deal with it, Cate Blanchett”?
What was that all about?
As for another golden moment at the GG when Borat (SBC) said that many of the people here tonight look younger as they age- and the cameras focused on Brangelina who are known for their plastic surgery and Botox.
and Mickey Rourke was the only real and honest person over there.
Angelina’s fake smiles were obvious (she is not a very good actress- not only on film), as Kate over the top acceptance speech was a wee overacted.
Johnny Depp looked like an aging teenager who doesn’t realize he is not 16 anymore and has done too many drugs or something.
The Golden Globes are always interesting because the liquor is flowing and the show is more relaxed.
Kate Winslet, while irritating, was all breathless and such because she won in both categories she was nominated in. That’s why with the second speech she was flipping out. She was probably sitting there thinking “whatevs, I’m not gonna win anyway” And then BAM she wins in another category. That never happens.
She and Leo have had a longer relationship than her and her husband, I believe. They are apparently (from interviews and such) as close as a brother and sister and that would explain, to me, why they were so touchy-feely and giggly. Plus, she sees her husband every day and she probably won’t see Leo again until the Oscars. Let them have their fun.
I’m glad it wasn’t just me who noticed Demi’s top was see through. I asked my wife at the time – she said no – I beg to differ.
Ricky Gervais – Brilliant – can anyone remember a pint on stage at an awards show before? It took me back to John Stewart’s send-up of ‘gay’ Hollywood at the Oscars.
Kate’s second speech really seemed an attempt to out Sally Sally, it was unexpected and disappointing.
And finally, I hated that hair in 1987 and it is just as stupid in 2009 – a miss for old Johnny Depp.
