Emma Watson covers the new issue of Teen Vogue, and she was styled in kind of punk-rock (-ish) way. Her styling actually reminds me a lot of Kristen Stewart’s styling when K-Stew was doing The Runaways. Sort of Joan Jett, but with some couture elements. I especially like Emma’s freckles on the cover – very cute! I’m glad the mag didn’t airbrush them out. I’m assuming Emma covers Teen Vogue because she’s promoting The Bling Ring. Emma had a new interview with The Radio Times where she talks about the consumerism at the heart of the film:
After starring in the Harry Potter films as the very sensible Hermione, she has progressed to playing a teenager who steals designer clothes in her latest film. But it seems Emma Watson is still Hermione at heart after she revealed she has only eight pairs of shoes. And despite amassing a fortune of more than £26million, she condemned extravagant celebrity lifestyles as ‘consumerism as a form of kleptomania’.
The 23-year-old stars in The Bling Ring which opens in the UK next week. It is based on the true story of a gang of teenagers who stole £2million of luxury goods from the homes of celebrities in the Hollywood Hills.
Their biggest haul came from the home of heiress Paris Hilton. The 32-year-old socialite whose great-grandfather founded the Hilton Hotels chain, gave permission to film at her home.
For Miss Watson, stepping into Miss Hilton’s vast walk-in wardrobes was like walking into a department store.
Miss Watson said: ‘It’s almost like consumerism as a form of kleptomania. She could never wear all of those clothes and half of them were brand new and still had the price tag on. But I suppose she just bought them to have them. We’ve all bought things on impulse but that’s an entirely different thing.’
However, Miss Watson appears to be much more down-to-earth.
She claimed: ‘I’ve got about eight pairs of shoes and that’s it.’
She went on to say she would not describe herself as a celebrity.
She told Radio Times: ‘There’s a whole new definition to celebrity now. And I think that’s why you see a lot of actors blanching at being associated with that word “celebrity” because it’s become something that isn’t really associated with having a craft… But it’s easy for me to sound like a total hypocrite because, of course, I’m dressed in designer clothes right now.’
Following the last Harry Potter film, 2011’s Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Miss Watson has been taking an English literature degree at Brown University in the US.
Commenting on her studies, she said: ‘I’ve always juggled my education with working and I’ve always liked the balance of that. I’ve always liked being able to go and do a film and then take a break and use my brain and do something different. I hope one day to do a Masters. But I’m just going to keep gently moving towards it and I’m not in any particular rush.’
She only has eight pairs of shoes? I could see that, but only because these celebrities get to borrow so many clothes (and then return them). So Emma can borrow unlimited pairs of Louboutins and Jimmy Choos but yes, she doesn’t “own” them. That being said, I kind of agree with her. But I have the luxury of working from home and I don’t have to dress up at all for my job or anything else. Which means that I have an addiction to flip-flops and slippers. I think I have more than a dozen pairs of flip-flops and slippers. Emma judges me.

I am also a flip-flop wearer (it’s hot in Texas!)
I have my casual flops and my dressy bedazzled flops 🙂
When I lived in South Carolina I swear I wore flip flops from April until September. Sometimes I’d even wear them with toe socks when it was cold!
I like her. Mostly because she seems intelligent and articulate and thoughtful. I like that she seems to constantly struggle with being a celebrity.
Ditto. She seems grounded and smart. Let’s hope she continues on the right path.
Side note, medium to long hair REALLY suit her face much better than a short do. Noted.
But without being an arsehole about it like some others, such as KStew.
I have more than 6 pair of shoes because I live in 4 seasons country and can’t wear boots during winter 🙁 but then again I don’t have privilege of being able to borrow designer shoes… Ema judges me too!
OMG your poor thing! No boots? Im addicted to boots. If it were summertime practical I would wear them now as well. What wrong with you and boots?
I really like Emma. i’m just curious to know, when these dresses/shoes return back to the owner after they’ve been borrowed what happens to them? do they get sold? thrown out?
Depends. The celebrities who are famous enough to have a major designer actually tailor something especially for them are quite often gifted the dress or given the opportunity to purchase it for a massively reduced price. If it was a unique design created just for them (not something ever shown on the runway) the designer may want it for their archives though.
Otherwise it all gets sent back. Some of it will be sent out to fashion mag shoots (shoes and bags especially may be loaned for editorials dozens of times), sometimes the magazines actually purchase something they think they’ll be able to use repeatedly, it may be cut up and parts of it re-used eg. intricate beading work, a significant amount will be thrown out because it was badly damaged, some will be lended to other celebrities or sold as samples (not so much with the big fashion houses, but common with small brands). The proper couture dresses may be used in showings for people who are actually looking to buy, but often this will happen before a dress is ever loaned out. Some of it will eventually go into the archives, some will be binned once it’s done the rounds.
Ah! Thanks! It sounds very complicated and the only thing that sticks to my mind is ‘wearing someone else’s shoes’. so gross. So if you’re a model you might have to use 2nd hand shoes and clothes once worn by..let’s say… Lindsay Lohan? Geez i wouldn’t want to share a cab with her let alone shoes or clothes! yyikes
First time in my life i’m happy to not be a model 😀
I think it’s a bit disingenuous for her to be acting above the likes of Paris Hilton when she clearly has access to as many shoes as she wants. Just because she doesn’t pay for them doesn’t mean that she is any better.
Often times i get a bit annoyed with Emma’s need to be seen as ‘classy’ and different to others her age. She made a really dumb comment about girls with their bra straps showing and was all ‘i would never do that, it’s a totally different psyche’ etc. Give me a break!
I did like that she admitted to smoking pot on the Perks dvd commentary. I don’t think many people listened to it though, or else surely it would have made a tabloid headline ‘Hermione is a druggie!!’
I love this photoshoot. It’s age appropriate and different from the usual Chanel type styling she usually sticks to. Love the freckles!
I pretty much agree completely with you, Mia. I still love her, but I do get tired of her talking about materialism and aestheticism from an EXTREMELY privilaged postion. I think she knows her tendency towards pretension, though, and tries to combat it. And this photo shoot – wow! She’s growing into such a beautiful young woman.
I read her say that she thought Nicki’s costume should be fixed because her bra strap was showing, then the costume designer said that this was the intention, that is all.
And seeing Paris Hilton’s closet, it really looks insane, looks more like a clothing store. I doubt that Emma’s closet is something like this. She has said that what she wears at events is all borrowed and that she has to return everything.
The first photo makes her look like she could be Eddie Redmayne’s little sister.
She’s smart, nice, cute, but I jut dislike her so much.
Probably because she was horrible as Hermione, and I’m a huge HP fan.
I like her too. She is so attractive without being the booby long-haired blonde type. She’s one of those actors I could watch in anything.
Meanwhile, she’s one of those actors who can ruin any movie for me. I loved Perks the book, but I can’t bring myself to watch the movie because of her. Those eyebrows, same expression all the time. Horrible.
She looks cute here, like that they did not photoshop her freckles off.
Still don’t have very strong feelings on her, don’t hate or like her, but I suppose that is a good thing.
Not a fan of her hair here!! She’s so pretty it doesn’t do much for her!!!
She looks like Ali Lohan in that header pic. Not a good look.
I CANNOT wear flip flops, they KILL my feet! It kinda amazes me how it doesn’t bother most people.
I have hardly any shoes. I HATE buying shoes. I just like plain or classic looking shoes, and most of the time it’s not that easy to find.
I’ve never noticed it before, but does anyone else think she kind of looks like the female Fernando Torres? I think it’s the freckles.
Yes! She looks like Nando (at his prettiest), w/ a haircut that Sergio Ramos had years ago.
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, and I know it’s Hollywood and a different world, but it makes me so sad to hear of her having “only” 8 pairs of shoes, and having this be news, when there are people all over the world who have no shoes at all. I have been to Haiti twice where there is trash and glass everywhere and kids walking around barefoot. It really broke my heart to have kids tugging at my arms begging for the pair of flip flops I was giving away, not caring what size or color they were. Just desperate for a pair of shoes. One boy was wearing a pair of slippers and the person in charge told me not to give any to him because he already had shoes.
I am NOT trying to guilt trip anyone because I am also guilty of having way too many shoes. I just don’t understand the world sometimes.

What’s hard to understand?
Some people have a little, some people have a lot, some people have none at all. Many people are so separated from the people that have little to none that they don’t see how much of a need there is, but even those people give to charity and donate their things when they see someone needs it, or they give on a regular basis. Others seek out opportunities to provide for others when they buy things for themselves by buying from certain companies. People volunteer to go places and donate goods and others go around getting people to join the cause. And so on and so forth because that’s how the world works.
It’s not that hard to understand.
Well, I’m thinking she understands how the world works.
It’s more the WHY does it have to be this way?
I’m with you Lucybelle. It SUCKS.
Thanks, ZigZag, thats exactly what I meant. Obviously intellectually I understand that there are rich people and poor people, generous and stingy. Emotionally I don’t understand WHY there has to be people that are lucky to eat one meal a day and then people who get paid several million dollars to release a picture of their child.
That’s easy – because there are millions of people who are willing to buy the gossip magazines. Supply and demand. Difference is – some celebs intentionally sell the pics to a magazine, take the money and give it to a good cause while others just take the money and bank it.
I think those photos are awful. Only 8 pairs of shoes? Well that is still more than I have and more than a lot of people in this world have.
Only 8 pairs of shoes – bs. The amount of stuff she probably gets sent for free on a regular basis would mean she has more than 8 pairs. She is trying to market herself as like the new natalie portman or something and it’s annoying. Terrible actress too but at least she has something between her ears.
i read that she shares her wardrobe with her friends, one is a model, i dont know.
to me its far too less to get up in arms about what she said. seriously, so maybe she has more shoes that eight, big deal.
She’s always annoyed me.
She suffers from the Winslet syndrome. She’s always been dismissive of the celebrity lifestyle but next thing you know she drops out of college, spends her life on the red carpet and becomes the face of Lancome.
She was also quite unsufferable in the build up to the last HP film. Always standing right in the middle of all the shots with OTT dresses and dramatic tears… Grint and Radcliffe always looked a bit embarrassed posing next to her.
I think she’s not as nice as her PR people make her out to be.
And Spook is right- she was awful as Hermione. All the exaggerated sighing and the flouncing… It was grating. To me she’s an average-looking girl and a one(OK, maybe two)-note actress who struck gold BIG TIME with the right franchise.
+1, Maum, and Spooks up-thread.
I think Emma Watson is a pretty girl, but completely bland. Not only does she not possess the talent necessary to carry a film, but even in an ensemble she is underwhelming. She was absolutely shit as Hermione.
But, I suppose I could forgive her lack of acting ability if it we’re for the pretentious, slightly egotistical and wooden personality. That is the clincher for me.
I agree; I think she’s cute, but nothing special in the acting department. I think she’s trying to put distance between herself and the partying lifestyle of Hollywood….which is good, but she’s going about it in the wrong way. I don’t think she means to, but she sounds pretentious and unaware almost ninety percent of the time that she opens her mouth.
Instead of saying that she’s different, she needs to not say anything and just do. But that said, I see her carving out her own niche, because she is dependable. I don’t think she’ll ever be a huge star (unless she takes some acting classes), but it’ll be steady.
If anything Dan and Rupert always appeared to be more comfortable with Emma than with each other. Dan even said that after Harry Potter he keeps in touch with Emma, but not with Rupert.
She is still in college, she only needs one more semester to graduate.
And she only attends events when she’s promoting a movie or Lancome, most celebrities attend much more events than her.
I love the styling here – it’s pretty unusual for her. Typical editorial take on the ‘edgy’ look usually involves a lot of heavy makeup and leather/studded/ripped clothes – not here. Great to see her fresh-faced but still punked out.
I like what she says about consumerism (of which I am sadly a disciple) – all these celebs that the Bling Ring crew robbed, they – like Emma – also got to borrow the clothes and accessories for work & appearances. But it wasnt enough – they had to own things they’d never wear.
I started to dislike her after visiting ”the real emma watson” website…
She is just good at letting people think she’s innocent.
That was VERY interesting reading! I recommend everyone have a look. Thanks for sharing that site, Rano.
I like that blog. I don’t agree with everything it says but its has some points.
I agree that this blog has many interesting points. Emma is now using her Hermione fame to get new jobs,if she wants to keep her career going she should reinforce her acting not simply use her beauty.
Nice try!
She doesn’t seem to be able to keep her stories straight. Doesn’t she pay a publicist or someone keep up with these things? How does she/they not realize that?
I spent most of my afternoon reading that blog….yeah, she’s more than a little pretentious. Which is funny, because her being Hermione is the only reason she gets attention or jobs. I don’t even think Daniel Radcliffe gets as much attention as her, and he’s a far superior actor. He freaked my sister out in The Woman in Black-she loves horror films.
I think she needs to go take some acting classes, keep her stories straight (or better yet, let everyone else do the talking), and just in general know that she’s around because she’s cute and thin and was Hermione Granger for 10 years.
I have a tshirt that says flip flops don’t count as shoes, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Actually she’s been at loads of events in Europe recently, most of them nothing to do with her films.
What made me laugh was this photocall (sorry, link to the Daily Fail). Every cast member there is wearing casual dresses and she shows up in a sparkly cocktail number complete with heavy make-up.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2011958/Emma-Watson-dazzles-Harry-Potter-The-Deathly-Hallows-Part-2-photo-call.html
If she ever finishes her uni course, I’ll eat my (sorting) hat.
This sort of headline bugs me though, I bet if you looked at pap shots of her you would see her wearing more than eight different pairs of shoes. It’s so… Unnecessary.
It’s like Kate Winslet lying about her non natural birth because she didn’t want to be seen as too posh to punch. Or Stella MacCartney who calls her four nannies ’friends’.
You’re famous, you’re privileged. We get it. Don’t insult our intelligence.
What events? I think the last event she attended in Europe was the premiere of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This year she attended the Met Gala but I can’t remember any other event not work related. Last year she supported one of her best friends attending the premiere of his film, presented an award to Mario Testino, attended a benefit auction, was celebrating her birthday at Coachella (she was in Los Angeles filming The Bling Ring) and attended the book launch of one of her best friends, but other than that, she attends premieres of her movies, Lancome events and awards where she is nominated.
Sorry I was meant to reply higher up by the way!
I love Emma, she’s one of my favorite actresses. That said, I hate when actors pretend they’re above the celebrity culture and can’t imagine why regular people want to be famous. Obviously you do, otherwise you wouldn’t have become famous yourself!! Don’t pretend you hate all the benefits of being a celebrity, that you really just love your “craft” when everyone knows that’s bs. Rant over
I love this girl’s fashion style. She wears the most interesting, and, in my mind, gorgeous outfits and she always remains classy. Same goes with her hair. It is such a refreshing change from the “Kardashian mindset” that many girls strive for.
Ya 8 pairs of shoes that probably cost over a grand each.
