Star: Tori Spelling & Dean McDermott are flat broke & on the rocks again

Tori Spelling

Star magazine truly has a bone to pick with Tori Spelling. She’s shown herself as willing to engage them in battle, and I guess they’re desperate enough to pick another fight with her. In February, the tabloid published a huge cover tale about Tori and Dean’s $300 million divorce, which Tori immediately denied. Then Tori wrote a letter on her own website about how her kids cried in the supermarket checkout line after seeing the “divorce” announcement in a screaming headline. Two weeks later, Star doubled down with yet another split story, which Tori chose to ignore.

Now Star is messing with Tori again. They’ve based their newest story on the fact that she and Dean took a roadtrip with their kids to Canada instead of flying. The family was set to film a new HGTV cabin-renovation show there for three months, so it makes some sense that they’d drive up. Then they could have their own car and take more stuff than a suitcase apiece. Plus, I can see why it would be a pain to fly with four kids in tow. Maybe the car odyssey was part of the show. Maybe they just wanted to drive, you know?

For Star, Tori and Dean driving in their car to Canada means major trouble is on the financial horizon. I’ve omitted some of this three-page story, but the gist is that Tori and Dean are completely flat broke and (of course) totally on the rocks:

Tori Spelling

“Tori and Dean are going broke,” a close family insider tells Star. “They can’t keep up with the cost of living their famous Hollywood life, and it’s taking a huge emotional toll on them.”

While publicly, the couple grin and bear the homespun nature of their family life, behind closed doors, Tori, 40, and Dean, 46, agonize over how they’re going to raise their four kids. Uprooting their busy lives for the upcoming reality show, Tori & Dean: Cabin Fever, for example, was huge strain on the family. “And the sad thing is, they barely got any money for doing that show,” the insider explains, “But they have to take any opportunity that comes their way, because they are so desperate for money.”

“Tori didn’t get her fair share of her father’s wealth,” the insider says. “She struggled a lot financially but did manage to make ends meet from doing reality shows with Dean.” But as their family size increased [they have four children], so did their expenses, and Tori was forced to come up with creative ways to bring in more money: She wrote six books, launched a jewelry line with HSN, opened a furniture store and, most recently, started a children’s clothing line. “The money from Tori’s random business vantures helped to keep them afloat,” the source says. “But it wasn’t enough to maintain their lifestyle.”

Dean, meanwhile, has happily remained a stay-at-home dad throughout most of their marriage. But in recent years, the couple’s financial situation has become so dire, Dean is trying to contribute more. “He’s now trying to build a new career as a chef to provide for their family,” the friend say. “But he hasn’t come far enough to achieve any stability.”

As for Tori, “She is desperate and at a loss as to what to do,” the pal adds. “It’s not like she can just get a normal job, because she’s a celebrity.” She recently signed on to star in (and produce) a sitcom pilot for ABC Family. If the show gets picked up, it would represent the only steady income she’s seen in years. But the odds are stacked against her. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “In TV, something like 92 percent of all shows fail.”

[From Star, print edition, October 14, 2013]

The article goes on to say that Tori and Dean lost $800,000 on real estate sales over the past five years. Their kids are approaching school age and will need (?) private schooling, and Dean pays child support to his ex. The family is living modestly now but still barely scraping by, and Candy Spelling refuses to extend them a loan: “Candy doesn’t want to hear about her children’s money issues. It embarrasses her.” It’s true that Tori only received $800,000 of her father’s fortune, but she’s been making money all along. She’s a pretty shrewd businesswoman. I think Star just hates her.

Ahhhh hope they are okay. I like them. Haha

    • Charlotte says:

Me too. I am no fan of breaking up marriages at all and realise that’s how they got together, but I do still find her largely adorable.

  2. Leah says:

All I got out this story was the stink eye that little girl is giving her brother.

  3. Lucy2 says:

Why do some celeb parents make their kids do red carpets??
I could see money being a little tight for them (the Hollywood version, not like regular people struggling) but I doubt it’s as bad as Star makes it sound.
I’m sure she’ll respond- and mention their new show.

    • Charlotte says:

Their kids are a huge part of their brand. And I think she mostly only gets invited to ‘family’ events anyway.

  4. LadyMTL says:

ONLY $800,000 ?? Awww, let me weep for them. Okay yes, I know that when you consider how much money Aaron Spelling had, it’s not a lot but still! Don’t expect me to feel sorry for someone who inherited close to a million bucks. Yeesh.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Seriously. Granted their “lifestyle” probably warrants them having an insane amount of money just to get by but still…No one made them choose that way of life and no one made them have a bunch of kids.

I would lose my shit to have 800K. I’d run out and buy a condo 😉

      • Sassy says:

Karma ladies! Dean’s ex wife, who he left when she was pregnant to “be with” Tori, was on one of the talk shows the other day. And isn’t he a prize – a house husband ex actor who fancies himself a chef.

      • Ok says:

Sassy — deans wife was not pregnant. They were in the processing of adopting a little girl. I think just as they got the infant girl he left his wife for Torrie.

I kind of wondered if he ever tried to be a dad to that little girl or not. I only see him in public with his son.

Maybe his ex wife got custody of the baby completely. Not sure

      • DGO says:

Dean completely abandoned the little girl. Because they were adopting as a couple, Mary Jo almost lost the baby. She had legal expenses through the roof, and then the US government wouldn’t let her leave the country to go home to Canada until the legal matters were settled. There are tons of stories I can tell you about the damage Tori did to that innocent family.

    • fabgrrl says:

I.know! If I had “only” $800,000, I would buy a nice little house or condo to live in. Okay, sure, that probably won’t buy much in Hollywood, but, hey! you can live elsewhere! And the kids wouldn’t “need” private school if you weren’t pimping them and yourself out all the time!

      • Ok says:

Well $800k sounds like a lot. But it is paltry compared to the Spelling fortune.

I just do not believe that all she got was $800k. I think she got the $800k in cash and then has a bunch of trusts that pay out across time.

I had heard that she gets $10 million lump sum immediately after the birth if each child. That is supposed to be one of the terms of the trusts.

    • tracking says:

“only” 800K? Seriously, cry me a river.

    • Esmom says:

I know it’s a ton of money by “civilian” standards, but I was surprised at how low it seems given all I’ve heard over the decades about the Spelling fortune. I thought the Spelling mansion was the grandest in all of Hollywood or something like that. Did father and daughter have a falling out? Also, if he wants to work, isn’t he an actor? I don’t know…I smell BS.

The kid with the little yellow tie is precious!

      • hazeldazel says:

they did have a falling out. he was worth several hundred million, so yeah, giving her 800k was kind of a slap on the face.

She must be pretty broke (by Hollywood standards) think of all the times she calls the paps for a cut of the money. All these stupid little jobs, and now the husband is going to be a chef. She grew up the daughter of the richest producer in Hollywood, don’t believe for a second that she’s learned to live within her means.

    • sophie says:

Well, it isn’t much considering how many millions aaron spelling had. I find it weird that candy doesn’t help her daughter out more. That seems like such a toxic relationship.

      • Rosalee says:

hmmmm, her father may have left her $800,000.00 in the will but Tori also has a trust fund and has access to an yearly “allowance” which is no doubt a very healthy amount.

  5. GiGi says:

Yeah. Hm. I have three kids and driving is WAY easier than flying. Plus we like to travel and it makes it part of the trip – you can stop when you want, eat when you want.

Anyhow – I actually really like them. It seems like they live a pretty normalish life and kind of have it together – or as together as you can with 4 young kids!

I just watched that Candy Spelling special “Manor in the Sky” and it *is* a bit shocking to me that she is so incredibly wealthy and that she hasn’t shared that more with her children.

    • DrM says:

I don’t follow Tori – although I did enjoy her book…it was funny, quirky and honest (for a celeb bio anyway) but Candy Spelling….OMG what a piece of nasty work. Any interview I’ve ever seen of her she comes across incredibly badly. I really feel for Tori having to put up with a mother as heinous as that.

    • Silly says:

I saw that manor in the sky show too and just kept thinking how ridiculously over the top it was. What a selfish woman.

      • Ok says:

I saw only a part of the manor in the sky show. I will watch the rest eventually.

But I thought it was fully when she was talking about how she had a budget that she had to stick to. Of course she didn’t exactly say what the budget was.

    • siriusthecat says:

Aaron was dying and out of his mind the last few months of his life. Candy kept him isolated. I think he intended to leave his children set for life. Randy was, Tori got a zero left off her trust. Her trust is the 800k. His was millions. He never worked an honest day and kissed Candy’s butt. Candy is a spiteful, bitter woman. She might leave the grandkids money, not a penny for tori.

  6. The Wizz says:

    Candy is a stinge

    • Cecilia says:

Do Tori & her Mom even have a relationship??

    • mojoman says:

Candy is a b*tch! I mean, really? what is she going to do with ALL that money? she cant bring it to her grave the least she can do is put it in educational funds for her grandchildren.

      • emmm says:

I detest this type of attitude from anyone. Famous or not. Candy and Aaron did not work to keep their adult children going. Her mother/fathers money is not hers. It doesn’t matter if the parents are millionaires or not. Its Candy’s money nobody else’s. And call her greedy if it makes you feel better…or stingy or whatever. Candy’s money candy’s choices. The children are of age and do not and should not be supported in any other way than emotionally by their parents. It may be hard especially if the family is indeed struggling but Tori might actually have to learn what a hard days work really is. Candy is a successful Broadway producer and should not have to feel guilty for not supporting an adult child.

      • lisa says:

it’s not candy’s fault tori can’t handle money. when tori’s father died, tori and dean both left their spouses for each other and were marrying. should she get a bunch of $ to lose in a divorce? imo that decade she spent on 90210 was a long term inheritance plan. i cant imagine anyone else hiring her for a hit tv show w/o nepotism.

      • RdyfrmycloseupmrDvlle says:

@Emmm………..Its cultural Emmm…..different cultures handle money and the handing down of that wealth differently. I see your point a bit. No one here is suggesting she fork over ALL of her big bag of money. But to have your daughter pimping herself and her kids out to every minor gig…….that would embarrass me if I were Candy. I would gift them money with a lot of stipulations and I would demand a better image be put forth by them.
To my mind…I wouldnt DREAM of NOT taking care of my children BEFORE I die so I can see them enjoy it and grow and flourish.Whats money compared to my sons love? or my love for him?? Nothing! Its only money. Candy Spelling has thousands and thousands of dolls. Its nice to see she cares more about dolls than her own daughter. Fing pathetic.

      • Hakura says:

@RdyfrmycloseupmrDvlle – I love the way you worded your comment. It really explains the way I myself feel regarding money, & the awful, completely distorted value it gets, even over one’s own children/grandchildren. Those material objects you bought are never going to love you back.

Even if my grandparents didn’t like the way my parents did something, they would never let them, or their grandchildren, suffer. And it’s the same with my parents. Even with all the issues I have, & still living with them, not working or contributing to income (which, even with my severe depression issues that caused it, is not something I feel good about, & would change in a heartbeat/tomorrow if I could), they love me. I’m an adult, but still their child.

Taking *advantage* is a whole other ball-game, of course, but no matter what happens, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself, letting my grandchildren suffer because of their parent’s mistakes. It can get very messy, very fast, in these issues.

        It really is *just* money.

      • Belle Epoch says:

IF this story is true and they really are broke, then Candy absolutely is a bitch. No, she doesn’t *have* to give her daughter any money. But she could spin off enough to keep the children educated and the family free of stress without even missing it. What great cause is she going to spend her money on that is more important than her daughter and grandchildren? Isn’t she living alone in a palace with room for an entire African village? I’ve known parents with a fraction of her fortune who have done far more for their children.

      • Ok says:

Emma. — you have a good point. But technically, if you want to nit pick details, it is Aaron’s money. Candy inherited it all

  7. It'sJustBlanche says:

I would imagine they’re fine. She’s smart with money and they seem pretty solid actually. I doubt it’s true.

    • Ok says:

I agree with you. I am sure they have plenty of money. If she portrays herself as having money issues it will make her more relatable. And her career is pretty dependent upon people being able to ” relate” to her.

She really is her father’s daughter. Very shrewd.

  8. DanaG says:

Nothing says a split like a couple driving to Canada with four kids in tow. LOL If they can handle that they can handle anything. I guess Star think if they keep saying they will split one day they may get it right. I don’t think these two will these two seem really happy together.

    • Delta Juliet says:

After a road trip with my husband and two kids were are usually on the verge of divorce too. lol

  9. brin says:

Whenever I see a pic of them, I hear the Beverly Hillbillies theme song.

  10. blue marie says:

No child needs private school, if you can afford it great but its not a necessity.

    • Lucy Goosey says:

I think that depends on where they are raised. Kids in some areas need private school to emerge semi literate!

However, I just don’t think that is the case in Beverly Hills.

      • madchen says:

I don’t think they’re in Beverly Hills and if they live in the district I think they live in, it would be wise for them to go private or battle LA Unified for a better public placement. Los Angeles public schools are a huge crap shoot, even in better neighborhoods.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      ITA 100% marie.

A caveat: I will say that it does depend on location, like Lucy Goose said. For instance, I have coworkers who live in not-so-savory parts of the city and send their kids to private school more for safety concerns and just to get a decent education, which makes sense to me.

      • Amelia says:

Totally disagree. We spent about $25k a year sending two kids to private school through high school. Our school district was just ok, and parts of it were fair. My kids ended up excelling academically, with one earning a full academic scholarship to an honors program at a university and another earning a partial scholarship to a great school back east. They wouldn’t have had the rigorous curriculum or attention in public school.
The neighboring district and the one that encompasses most of our city lost accreditation ten years ago and hasn’t earned it back, so kids that go there have diplomas that are essentially worthless. Anyone who can afford private school or wrangle a scholarship goes.
Private schools are not just for the wealthy. Sometimes they are the best option. Sometimes they are the only option.

    • Soxfan says:

wow-so many things wrong with this statement, I don’t know where to start.
As some have mentioned, depending on the area, yes, a child may need private school. Not only safety concerns, but, academically as well. A more rural or poorer town is, in most cases, not the best option. Class size is smaller, hence, a better student/teacher ratio. The curriculum in many cases, is a year or even two ahead of the public schools. As far as cost, there is a great deal of financial aid/scholarships out there to help. Most people are not aware and think private schools are only for the super wealthy. My husband and I are both (poor!!) private school teachers and were able to send our 2 girls to private schools for a fraction of the tuition. We paid less than a monthly car payment for them to go. In our case, the local public schools were not adequate enough (very rural area) I know there are many cities/towns where the local public schools are good, parents are involved/concerned and the teachers are wonderful and caring and very innovative. In others areas, however, a private school may be the BEST option. Please do not say that NO child needs public school and should only be considered if one “has money”.

    • Janet says:

That depends on where you live. The NYC public schools are dreadful. Every parent in this city who can afford it sends their children to private or parochial schools, even if they have to scrimp and save. I scrimped and saved to put my son through private school and it was worth every single dime.

    • aang says:

Why can’t they just go to West Beverly?

  11. neelyo says:

I believe it. I’ve always thought he was nothing but a gold digger who married her with visions of their own wing at the Spelling mansion dancing in his eyes. Instead he’s taking car trips with the kids with no maid to change the diapers.

    • hadleyb says:

Me too. I have NO sympathy for either of them. YOu never see him with his other kids, he only talks about this kids with Tori.

They are both scum and kudos for Candy for not giving in when she smelled gold digger and scum in Dean and knew her daughter reeled in a loser who abandoned his family.

      • MollyB says:

He doesn’t talk about his “kids” from his previous marriage because he only supports/acknowledges his biological son. He has never supported or visited the daughter he and his wife adopted shortly before their split. I think his wife finalized her adoption without him. Says A LOT about his character and the character of a woman who would marry him and have four kids with him knowing that about him.

      • Violet says:

        @MollyB

I always get a little sick when people say “what a sweet couple” because there was a lot of collateral damage when they got together — both were married and, as you pointed out, Dean and his then-wife were in the process of adopting a baby (I remember his wife was afraid of losing the child altogether, as a result of Dean abandoning the family.)

Neither Tori and Dean have any redeeming qualities, IMO. For the sake of their kids, I hope the going never gets rough because their parents are the type to bail.

      • PrettyTarheelFan says:

I’m always pleased that I’m not the only one who feels bad for his first wife and family. Mary Jo Eustace wrote a pretty compelling “her-side” story-I encourage everyone to read it. Her talking about the faded bikini top with missing stuffing really got me for some reason. Pretty symbolic of how your life becomes so comfortable that you never think your partner would leave, and if they do, you start looking at all the little things that you “let go” and blaming yourself when really, it was Dean’s decision all along. Ugh.

      • lisa says:

his wife is very fortunate that the little girl’s adoption was not overturned. ita that tori and dean are not so innocent.

    • Cazzee says:

Yes, I’ll bet that if ‘only’ $800,000 was left to Tori Spelling, that means that millions of dollars are locked up in trusts for her children, who won’t be able to access it until their twenties. That way the gold-digger husband can’t touch it.

      Candi Spelling is no fool!

    • Gia says:

Dean is a low life scum bag who abandoned his family for fame. He is a spineless little man. Tori is equally disgusting. She’s the original Leeann Rimes. The only difference is that Tori used a tv show to gloat instead of twitter.

      • Suzy from Ontario says:

I agree with your assessment of Dean. He left his former wife right in the middle of them adopting a baby girl! He has always given off a skeevy vibe to me. I don’t believe he married her for love. I think he has always been all about the money and nothing I’ve seen in their marriage since has changed my mind.

I do feel a bit sorry for Tori bcause I think she does love him but she treated her former spouse pretty badly and maybe it’s karma.

      • Carol says:

Don’t forget that Tori went after Mary Jo, getting her kicked out of an awards show in Canada by lying about a restraining order and making snide comments referencing Mary Jo’s infertility issues. I can’t stand these two and don’t understand why they aren’t treated with the same contempt as Eddie and LeAnne.

  12. courtney says:

@Blue Marie some celebs who have tried public for some of their children come to the conclusion that private is safer for their remaining children. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward for example had had problems sending their two older daughters to public school so they sent their youngest to boarding school in Princeton New Jersey from 2nd grade through high school. granted now a days the tuition is astronomically high 40k+ a year

    • Sumodo1 says:

…and later lost the son (Scott)to suicide, so, your point is???

      • Amelia says:

Surely you’re not blaming his education for Scott Newman’s suicide are you? That is incredibly twisted.

    • I Choose Me says:

Hey courtney where ya been? Welcome back. 🙂

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

@ Courtney-Now what about Robert Wagner’s kids? Where did they go to school?

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

        Courtney is back woot-woot!

Tell me everything you know about Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman! Did you know the Newman product line has been expanded to include pet food? of course you did! I buy Paul Newman dog and cat food for my pets!

    • Lady D says:

Hey, hey, courtney! I’ve missed ya.

  13. QQ says:

Goddamn it That is a LOT of Small children *shudders* bet Dean didnt imagine this was his future when he dumped his wife and child for this young Spelling Heir LOL

  14. Christin says:

My impression of him is that he had visions of dollars dancing in his head when they got together. She’s been used to a lavish lifestyle, so I could believe they have had or will have money arguments. The traveling by car as proof is a stretch, though.

    • mayamae says:

If you believe Tori, which I tend to, from the time she started working on 90210, she was pretty much on her own financially. I’m not saying anything is wrong with that, but both her parents seemed to be pretty selfish when it came to the boatloads of money they had. And the Spellings are no Warren Buffett – profiding top of the line college educations, then expecting them to support themselves for their own good. I really think the Spellings had their children as accessories.

      • lisa says:

i once read that aaron was very disappointed that tori didnt want to go to college. you can lead a horse to water…

  15. Mia4S says:

Split or no split I have ZERO respect for celebrities who sell their private lives like these two and pimp their families on reality shows. Beyond gross.

  16. Ladybug says:

Maybe I shouldn’t admit this in public but I would totally watch that show.

Also, I would much rather take a long road trip and enjoy seeing what’s between here and there than go on a plane. And it could be a great learning opportunity for the kids as well. In between “are we there yet” and “I didn’t need to go then”, of course.

  17. Cazzee says:

    She wrote six books?

  18. crab says:

Thank God the kids look more like Dean! I’m sorry but she is one homily woman!

  19. NK says:

Saw the entire family + nanny at my doctor’s office in Toronto, recently. Tori was cute and natural with her kids and very warm and approachable. Can’t help but like her. Always have. Donna Martin Graduates!!

  20. Frida_K says:

The children are darling and the little girl certainly can throw some fierce stink-eye.

  21. eliza says:

I don’t buy the broke part one bit. She and her mother have long mended fences and I doubt she would allow her grandkids to go without. Tori also seems like a prudent saver and with her large family it is unlikely she would have blown through her 90210 $, cheap made for tv $, her QVC $ and her reality show cash or her endorsement moolah living a high lifestyle. People like her invest AND she has never been the type to spend spend spend as an adult. She and McDermott seem to live a fairly modest lifestyle by Hollywood standards.

The marriage part, I buy it is rocky and he has a wandering eye. He was not faithful to his first wife, and Tori seems very insecure about him.

Holy crap. Never knew I had such an opinion on this couple. Lol.

    • my .02 says:

I don’t think Candy has as much money to help out as you’d think. She spent money like crazy when her husband was alive. She built that white elephant of a mansion that she finally ended up selling for half of what she was asking, and she’s been spending crazy amounts of money on frickin’ *apartments* for crying out loud (what the hell do you need a $47 million apartment for, anyway?).

I’m pretty sure momma has blown through her money just as well as Tori did hers (yes, that amount was smaller, but still). When you have money, it’s easy to blow it all and end up with nothing when the cash flow stops coming in. Aaron Spelling was making money until he died, but the residuals from all those shows are nowhere near what his actual income was back then.

If they’d all lived sensibly, it would have been more than enough to survive on (even with four kids and a deadbeat husband). But these kind of people are incapable of living sensibly.

    • Green Girl says:

I’d also think Tori likely has access to the best financial planners, etc., in Hollywood. She always seems to have some sort of TV show or book, and I’m sure she can use her money to stay afloat.

  22. janie says:

I love Torii… She has always worked & taken care of herself. As far as Candy goes, she is one nasty bitch! She has two kids & is a billionaire, thanks to their father! Did anyone see the HGTV special re: her manor in the sky? I have never seen so much granduer! She never worked or earned a dime for the lifestyle she lives! I wish Tori well & hope things work out for her.

  23. HappyLucy says:

    I can relate, Tori.

When my dad (a doctor) died, he left all the money to mom to divvy out between her, my sister and me.

I got next to nothing. I still have to beg for financial help.

It’s partly my fault, though. I admit it. lol

    • Gia says:

At least you admit fault… But you’re really not entitled to a dime of your dads money. My father also passed and it made my mother a millionaire. I’m happy she can live well for the rest of her life and I (and my brother) encourage her to spend it however she pleases. We are grown children and can make our own money. To be honest, when he first passed and the money started rolling in, it was the most disgusting feeling in the world. None of us wanted anything to do with it.

      • Suzy from Ontario says:

Gia, your attitude is so refreshing and mature! Your Mom is lucky to have such great kids who clearly love her and loved their Dad. So nice. 🙂

      • I Choose Me says:

Go Gia. There are so many horror stories about family members fighting over money, property or things they feel entitled to when a wealthy parent or relative pass on, that it’s so damn refreshing to hear that there are people like you and your siblings out there.

      • Gia says:

Thx Suzy and ICM. I have also seen inheritance destroy families and its a shame. You think you really know someone…wait until a relative dies who has cash and see how they handle it. Their true colours really come out.

      • Esmom says:

Good for you Gia. My husband’s mom and her sister are in the midst of an ugly war over their parents’ money. It’s truly sickening to behold and he’d love to would walk away except that he is trying to protect his mom. Family ties have been utterly destroyed and we have seen the worst in human behavior time and again…it’s an appalling and sad situation.

      • Sunny says:

This! I agree! NO adult child should rely for their parents money! Nor should they expect an inheritance/trust fund! I know a family where both parents worked really good jobs and sadly after extended illnesses there wasn’t much left after medical bills instead of grieving or rembering their lovely parents both children were furious they didn’t get “their share” your parents death shouldn’t be part of your financial planning!

      • Hakura says:

@Gia – I had never sat down & thought about it, until I read your comment. But if my father (who earns for our family) passed, & we began to see all the money (that he was no longer spending on medical bills, & from investments), I too would feel a bit sick to my stomach.

Because you really loved your father… as I do my stepfather (my father passed away when I was 2, Mom remarried when I was 4, so he raised me as his own)… & when you lose them, you just can’t.. it’s hard to describe.

I think it’s the idea of benefiting from the fact that they passed, that makes it feel creepy, & hard to ‘enjoy’ any extra money that might come of it.

  24. Walt Jr says:

I thought she was an heiress?

  25. Nicolette says:

They drove so that means financial ruin according to Star? Sometimes people just like to take a road trip as opposed to flying.

Not feeling too sorry that she ‘only’ received $800,000. I can surely think of a lot of things I could do with that money.

  26. bbb1975 says:

She is very upfront about her extreme fear of flying.

  27. Cris says:

Cannot imagine that Candi has not set up trusts that bypass Tori and go directly to her grandchildren for education, etc. Pretty standard estate planning for wealthy people.

  28. Dawn says:

Tori Spelling will never be flat broke and I doubt they are on the rocks. Well not broke the way that I and other normal people can be flat broke. She has in’s to make money and she will. I don’t buy this one.

  29. Jackson says:

I have no idea why, but I like her. I even like her entire outfit in the top pic so my judgement might be off today, but still. And does she really lead some fancy, glamorous lifestyle that she is dumping boatloads of money into to maintain? I really doubt that. I’ll never like her husband since he just reeks the skeeve, but I hope she’s happy and her ventures are successful.

  30. MollyB says:

I don’t know why the papers always act like Tori and her brother were cut out of her father’s will or something. Usually when one half of a couple dies, the other half of the couple receives all the money and the children only inherit when the final parent dies.

  31. babythestarsshinebrite says:

Well, Star might hate her, but I do not.

  32. fabgrrl says:

You know, I sure wouldn’t want to be the person on the plane sitting next to four preschool age children! I think driving is a fine idea. And factoring in gas, lodging and food, it probably costs about the same as flying.

  33. Megan says:

Maybe they thought it would be fun to drive to Canada? I mean its a pretty drive from LA to Canada, my family did the PCH1 drive when I was a kid because it was an awesome and rather extensive vacation. In fact I was the most envied vacation that year.

Sometimes a trip is just a trip.

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

We just drove from Ohio to CA by way of Yellowstone and we chose to drive. We have been from Quebec to CA, all for my husband’s job. We choose to drive, we love seeing the country, have a interesting time and have fun. After the SoCal run we will make our way to Vancouver by car. When you will be in the city for a couple of months it is nice to have a car.

Flying with kids and stuff is a way bigger pain in the ass than driving, especially for a longer term trip. In the last four years and 21 cities, I have done it all and driving is kind of nice.

      I wish I had 800,000 dollars. I’d have bought a nice ranch somewhere…and a miniature cow. 🙂

      • Megan says:

I know I work with some people who just relocated and chose to drove across the country instead of fly. The trip sounded amazing and made me decide that if I relocate to the opposite side of the country ever I will drive it too.

Driving allows you to see things you wouldn’t see flying. I don’t know anything about their financial situation and I don’t care but I hardly think driving= blew threw $800,000.

    • emmie_a says:

It is a gorgeous drive! I once took a road trip in a luxurious RV and it was such a fun trip. If you have the time, it’s a very relaxing and interesting way to travel. And it’s not cheap – I don’t know if Tori & Dean took an RV but it’s probably more expensive than flying in some cases.

And eeeew – I noticed Dean’s toes were painted black. I don’t know why that grosses me out but it does!

  34. snappyfish says:

i’ll bet the kids have trust funds, too. but even if they don’t between the money she made on 90210, the money from her various lifetime movies, her books, their reality show, and the $800,000 she inherited she should NOT be in financial trouble. she should be able to live off the interest from her investments alone.

meh. I’ve got money troubles of my own, beeyatch.

    • Anna says:

No doubt Tori had to pay tax on the 800K she inherited as the USA taxes you pretty well on everything and probably gold fillings…..

  35. Bridget says:

This whole ”aaron only left the kids 800k” drives me crazy. Property taxes on that kind of fortune would be insane and he would have created trusts for his children, long before his death. Is it possible that Tori blew through her trust and was hoping to get more when he died? Totally.

  36. Suzy from Ontario says:

We should all have the misfortune to “only” inherit $800,000!

  37. skyler10 says:

All I can think is what the hell did Tori do to her face??? She looks like a caricature of a human.

  38. Madriani's Girl says:

Why did he leave nothing (comparatively speaking given what he was worth) to his children and why wouldn’t their mother help them? Again, I sense I am missing the story here. Is their financial plight “embarrasses” her, how does she thinks she looks not helping them?

  39. japangel says:

I hardly think that taking a car trip indicates financial ruin, but raising 4 kids in Hollywood on basically one income is difficult and it’s within the realm of possibility that they are indeed struggling.

I respectfully disagree with those who think Candy Spelling owes Tori something. Sorry! My in-laws have money like that and you know what? IT’S THEIR MONEY TO SPEND AS THEY PLEASE! They saw to it that their kids received the best education money could buy & got jobs with good salaries, set up college funds for all the grandkids and helped their children buy homes. If they spend millions on homes, airplanes, vacations, etc. – so be it. They earned it, we didn’t! Jet fuel for one of their trips is almost more than my DH earns in a year, lol.

The most messed up people I have met are the offspring of the uber-wealthy. They tend to be major wastes of space. Whether Candy had good intentions by making her kids work for a living or whether she is just a greedy shrew, I have no idea, but by Hollywood offspring standards, Tori is one of the more functional people.

    • fabgrrl says:

When I fantasize about having lots of money, that is what I imagine doing – send my kids to a top notch college, and graduate school if they wish, all expenses paid; help out with down payment LOAN on a house; set up trust funds for the grandchildren’s education, and that is IT!

    • lol says:

I could care less about Tori but even I think many people are adding “details” that may or may not be true. Its standard practice for “some” rich people to make sure their grandkids have funds for important and expensive things like education. This is Hollywood. I dont feel safe and assuming Candi is smart enough to do that or even care to.

    • Delorb says:

Well, technically speaking, Candy didn’t earn any of that money either. Well, unless you don’t count having to sleep with Aaron…

IMO, Candy is a piece of work.

  40. Ginger says:

If you are a fan of Tori and Dean you would know that they love family road trips. So, this is complete hogwash. I agree that they have a bone to pick with her. I still can’t believe that Tori only got that much inheritance. But she is always working and so is her husband. It’s not like they are living off of one income.

  41. madchen says:

The fact that Tory survived having Candy as a mother is huge. The money be damned. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her growing up in that house.

    • Cindy says:

Yes, I get the impression her mom was a total narcissist, and not very kind to her growing up. You know Tori has self esteem issues with all of her plastic surgery, and her helping to break up two marriages. I hope she keeps working hard and makes money for her family and they stay together, it’s the best thing for the kids.

  42. cinderella says:

I tend to think they spend big. The houses, business ventures, Dean’s toys…but Tori will hustle for her dollar. She’s not lazy.

  43. Jayna says:

Stop spending, Tori. How about that? Those over-the-top mega-expensive birthday parties for a one-year-old are a sign why you’re broke.

  44. Nelly says:

She has a face like PIMP MAMMA KRIS

The man is a dead beat, stay at home dad?
The more kids he gives her the more money he thinks he can pimp her.
    I don’t buy this story.

  45. Jen says:

I doubt she blew through all of her money. I will bet you she’s got a lot socked away. A LONG time ago, before she was even married to her first husband, I remember watching an episode of one of those shows were people invite cameras into their homes for a tour. This was either near the end of 90210 or a little after so she couldn’t possibly have blown through all her money yet. I was shocked at how tiny her condo was and how normal it looked. Her furniture looked like Pottery Barn stuff and she didn’t have some crazy Mariah Carey-esque closet. And she seemed really proud of her place, as modest (for Hollywood at least) as it was.

It seems that many young, newly rich in Hollywood go out and blow their cash on some really fancy house and high end car that they cannot possibly keep up when their career crashes and burns. Plus, I never see her in the tabloids carrying 15 different Hermes/Chanel bags around like the Kardashians. I will bet you her father started telling her long before he passed that she wasn’t going to get tons of money and she better look out for herself. I watched a season of one of her reality shows and she seems to have a pretty good head on her shoulders. I seriously doubt Star’s article, at least on the money front. Her husband, though, has also struck me as a bit sketchy. Wow, like a previous poster, I never knew I had such an opinion on her!

  46. Meg says:

most people don’t make $800,000 in their lifetime, but this woman can’t live on that? i have no sympathy

    • lol says:

In a year you mean not a “lifetime” I think you mean? lol A person making 40k a year will hit that in 20 years gross.

  47. joan says:

Dean was really likable on that celebrity TV cooking competition, helping everyone else.

And if you grew up in the Spelling style, you’d think $800K was pretty much chump change too.

They seem very resourceful and hardworking.

  48. Green Is Good says:

Both these POS’s get the middle finger. Karma is a major F*ck, isn’t it?

  49. Kelly says:

Candy sounds like a bad mom but I don’t feel bad for Tori

  50. Anon33 says:

Dean always looks so sloppy and greasy. Yuck.

  51. DGO says:

I can’t stand them, and I’m glad Candy won’t give Tori any money (if true) because gold digging Dean doesn’t deserve a penny of it. Tori pretty much tried to do to Dean’s ex-wife what LeAnn did to Brandi, only Mary Jo was able to shut her down quickly. I can see why Aaron Spelling didn’t leave her more money.

  52. Dawn says:

Nothing is ever said about Dean’s family in Canada (siblings, parents (although deceased), aunts, uncles, cousins). Why? Because he abandoned them all when he met Tori. His goal was always to “make it big”, and she was his cash cow. So he abandoned his family and Mary Jo (although I have to say she played the media to make herself look like such a victim….their marriage was DONE before he met T, MJ is pretty nasty).

I sound so bitter. Truth is I like T and I feel sorry for Dean, he always seems like such am appendage to their life.

    • DGO says:

If their relationship was done, they wouldn’t have been adopting a baby girl together – the baby girl he abandoned to play house with Tori.

  53. Novaraen says:

    “only 800,000” *facepalm*

  54. Michelle says:

It’s amazing to me how OPINIONATED so many of you are. You people don’t know this couple, Tori’s mom or anyone else related to this story. It’s so stupid to take the words of a gossip rag that’s got it out for this chick. I highly doubt that family is broke. I don’t think Candy should HAVE to give her kids any money. I don’t think Dean married her for her money nor do I think they’re on the verge of divorce. It’s disgusting how many of you have branded her and her mom hitches, basically…and him s gold-digger. I figured I’d go ahead and throw my opinions in with the rest of you ridiculous people.

  55. JennB says:

Personally, I don’t care. I just wonder how they can go from a $300 mil divorce to broke in a matter of months. Both stories sound like bull!

  56. Brad's hair grease says:

Tori needs a make over. She needs to tone down that white hair and go for a softer lipstick color. Someone please help her. Oh, her kids don’t HAVE to go to private school. What’s wrong with the public schools in Beverly Hills or wherever they live?

    • lol says:

I dont think she lives in Beverly Hills. Depending on where she lives in LA,private is a must if she cares at all about her kids education. LA (along with Chicago, the entire state of Florida lol) and many places have some of the worst public schools created.

  57. Brad's hair grease says:

Why doesn’t Tori get some acting gigs on those Hallmark movies?

  58. kuntybitch says:

I think Daddy and Mommy Spelling were/are a lot wiser than people have been giving them credit for. I think Daddy knew that Slimy McD’s only interest in his daughter, was for any fortune she might inherit some day. Just watch what will happen after TS and Slimy MdD go splitzville…I’d be willing to bet that will be payday for TS. I’ve heard of stories like that before, amongst people I know. The parents won’t leave a penny to a child they feared married a gold-digger, but once the divorce was finalized…in rang the money! I’m thinking Daddy Spelling was just trying to protect his daughter’s future.

    • lorna D says:

I feel so bad for Tori. Its a well known fact rumors have been going around for years that Dean married Tori for the money she may inherit from her mothers estate someday. Why isn’t he working anywhere to help the family financially. I find it utterly disturbing that Tori would agree for him to be a stay home dad. He must have convinced her that she was the more famous of the couple and would make more money until he ” got his big break.” Tori get a good lawyer and dump him. He loves your money and only services you so that he can buy his toys and buy the best of life with YOUR hard earned money. You have 4 precious babies you need to take care of because its clear Dean is the slacker in your marriage. Dean McDermott would be living on the streets or in a flop house if it wasn’t for you Tori. He saw you coming a mile away. Wake up Tori before its too late. The same goes for the equally beautiful Carny Wilson. Ladies is your self esteem so shattered that you have to stand for second best?

      • Cyndi says:

He’s a pretty decent actor, from the little I’ve seen of his work. That was the first season of “American Horror Story”. Wonder why Evan and several others have gone on to be in the second and new third season, but not Dean. ???

  59. Tasos says:

My gut tells me that this essentially is much ado about nothing, since Mama Candy will not permit her grand babes, her children or their spouses to go broke, either out of her compassion and a mother’s protective instinct to ensure that her offspring multiply and thrive, or vanity.

This matter about Tori’s supposedly paltry inheritance of
$800K amuses and confuses me. (Hello, $800K is a lot of bongo bucks!) While I am not quite as old as dirt YET, the way we were taught (and the way that I/my wife will honor) is the dead parent leaves *everything*, not some
or most, *everything* to the surviving spouse. I willl do likewise because: 1) I want to ensure that my wife will
live as we did (or better) before I took up eternal worm farming, and; 2) I want to ensure that my wife will not be a financial burden to our children, and; 3) When mama holds the purse strings, kiddies will be more inclussive in their family life, so mama may spend quality time being an indulgent grandmama with our grandbabes, and; 4) our grandkids (and their parents) will learn how to relate with older people, maybe understand, appreciate and even learn a few things, like respect, from them.

  60. Nikita says:

Her mother is disgusting and will regtet it for not giving her daughter the Money she deserves! What did the mother to GET the money of aaron alone? Nothing!!! She will die alone and rich but money wont hold her hand! No matter what happend, they were all good when she married the First time so they were close for a Long time. Tori is no drugaddict or a Crazy drunk Punk! She has a adorable family, they are healthy. What can a mother expect more? She has to accept her daughters choises, shes just a human who did maybe some mistakes but Hey, when you look at candys Face you see lots of mistakes too with her plastic surgerys ha 😛

    • Dovie says:

What did the daugther do to deserve the father’s money? Nothing.

My father is remarried. I won’t get a dime when he passes as it will all go to his wife. That’s how it is supposed to go. I am not entitled to a single penny as I am not one of the ones who contributed to their financial assets. Tori didn’t contribute to her parent’s financial assets either. She’s lucky to have gotten the money she did.

      • mike says:

        Neither did Candy.

At least Tori has Aaron’s blood flowing in her. Who is Candy? A nobody but no-good two-bit gold digger who struck gold.

Yes, legally Candy got Aaron’s fortune, but let’s face it. Tori has as much moral claim to that money as Candy, if not more.

      • DGO says:

@ Mike – Tori wouldn’t visit her dying father. She was too busy partying it up in Canada, slamming Dean’s ex-wife every chance she could get. Aaron knew what he was doing when he made that will.

    • Cindy says:

Yes, it seems like Tori has survived the pitfalls of many Hollywood kids, and she has worked hard all of her adult life.

  61. JustLurking says:

This is just Star magazine’s usual whacked out job of trying to drum up business. I’ve seen the HGTV shows about Candy Spelling’s new homes and the woman is loaded! Now that she has made up with Tori, and is happily doting on her four grandchildren she isn’t going to let them go broke. Maybe Tori didn’t get a good deal out of her father’s will, but neither did Randy. Everything went to their mother. Their mother will take care of her children and grandchildren. I actually am interested in this HGTV show mentioned in this story. Hope it shows up on the Canadian HGTV network!

  62. magpie says:

That is one long trip. When you factor in gas, food and lodging I would bet it’s even more expensive than flying. Plus if this was for a work related trip, wouldn’t the network pay the airfare?

  63. Delorb says:

Four small children and two parents? You betcha I’d be driving. Think of all the provisions they’re going to need when they get there. That’s cheaper than checking all the bags they’d need to check, renting a car and the headaches of crying children on a plane.

OT: her mother is a total B. How can you sit on all that money (and at the time all that property) and not share it with your kid? If she’s hating on Tori because she doesn’t measure up looks-wise, Candy should look in the mirror because Tori looks like her twin.

  64. feng shui says:

Hello, i think that i noticed you visited my
site thus i came to go back the desire?.I am attempting to to find issues to enhance my website!I guess its good enough to make use of a few of your ideas!!

  65. Tammy White says:

She’s worth 15 million, how is she broke?

  66. A Fan says:

For f**k sake, men/boys look ridiculous and gross with their nails painted. In my opinion, of course…

  67. robin says:

COME ON FOLKS! Her mother is worth 600 MILLION DOLLARS! yes, that’s MILLION of dollars, she just sold one of the largest houses in California, on the peak of a mountain! Maybe she’s just waiting for them to get divorced before she hands over any money – she wants Tori to learn to appreciate it, rather than just be handed it.

  68. VilodeMenus says:

All of the kids are cute, but that oldest girl is going to be a great beauty, she’s very pretty.

As for money, by hollywood standards they live modestly, Tori doesn’t dress designer, neither does he and they’ve had money rolling in regularly and most of the time it’s been pretty good. She’s still got her dad’s connections and if she chose to act more she could. I think she just wants a much simpler life and by any measure she’s a success.

She probably turned Star down for some interview so they are going to punish her until they get their way. That’s why you shouldn’t buy those trash magazines, any of them. Get info online and leave them and their advertisers in the dust.

  69. Millie says:

I agree with Sassy/Ok/DGO…Dean left MaryJo (qualified chef/caterer/tv chef) high and dry thanks to his skanking with Tori. Tori didn’t care about Jack (Dean’s oldest boy) crying about screaming divorce headlines and his father claiming he’d found his ‘soulmate’?! They are a perfect pair of moneygrubbers. (Dean barely worked in his first marriage.) Funny how she doesn’t like to be the one on the end of the broken family stories. They will never divorce -her for pride and blackmailing mommy and him- he’ll never leave his low self-esteemed cash cow.

  70. Tina says:

I will admit,I LOVE TORI AND DEAN! I have read a few of her books. She is so funny and i truly believe the two of them are in love.
Candy was terrible to Tori and would tell her that she would be pretty if she got a nose job and all this crap. Did I mention Tori was a little girl? From reading her first book, Aaron was confused towards the end. Tori has stated that he told her she would be set for life. She believes he was confused and that’s why he only left her 800,000. She also heavily hinted that her mom was having an affair and the guy was at the funeral
