This might be the best thing I’ve read all day.
best comment evah :-))
I think her thought process is adorable and hilarious.
Gee, Britney Spears says something tasteless, dimwitted and actually offensive. Shocking.
And before anyone comes with “oh but poor britney sick!” I’ll point out that she has been stupid and bratty since 1998. You can pity her now and this can still be true.
Goodness, thank you. Co-sign.
If you read full quote it’s obvious she was talking about her ” beauty team and hairstylist ” not the entire Gay community. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
I think the full quote makes it obvious that she is talking about “gays”, and she uses her hairstyling team as proof that she knows “gays” very well.
How has she been bratty?
THe world is full of clips like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlg7zuLN370
JENNIFER ANISTON IS PREGNANT LOL
Britney is just an undereducated hillbilly. Is this news?
Spot on!
Wait, if she said “I think straight people/xyz/my neighbors/my friends are adorable and hilarious” it would not be in any way offensive. And really its not… they ARE usually more sharp witted and outgoing. Thats not all they are, for sure– probably the only thing that can offend is to assume this is all she sees them as in totality?
We can disagree whether this statement is offensive. I in no way want to say your opinion is wrong. I just wanted to say why I personally think it is offensive. In your example you use straight people. Straight people are the majority and have not been oppressed due to their orientation. I personally still don’t think it’s right to label all straight people… However, when we start labeling gay people as all being a certain way it is continuing a cycle of separating them from the majority. If for example she said “all black people are hilarious” I think people would not think it was cute. Stereotyping people because of their race has harmed minority people. Saying all black people are a certain way is why there is a disproportionate rate of black men in jail then white men. Furthermore just because she’s saying positive things about a group of people doesn’t make it right, IMO. If she had applied a generality that was negative like “all gay people are sinners” it would not be seen as appropriate. I believe that we have to be really careful labeling people because it can easily be used to continue to oppress minority groups. That’s just my opinion though.
I wanted to add that as a lesbian I am not hilarious at all. It is my biggest flaw. I am not funny or entertaining. I am a really introverted, boring person. So she would be very disappointed if she met me!
She was talking about them as if they are accessories. Not individuals or people. And straight people have the privilege of NOT being described as a group because they are not “marked” as a group. She was talking about her “stylists” and “beauty team” as representative of the group as a whole. “They,” as in “the gays” are ‘hilarious, adorable,’ etc. Yes, she meant all of them.
Using your friends or neighbors as the object in this statement is not an equivalent comparison. She also comes off as condescending.
Ok ..well…. I was trying to figure out why people would be offended, moreso because I agree with a few others who think that she wasn’t trying to be rude in any way. That doesn’t mean that it wasnt taken as rude, of course- but – I’m only trying to see the positive because I am certain she meant it with kindness. Or so I imagine.
“they ARE usually more sharp witted and outgoing.”
Um…sexuality doesn’t determine a person’s wit or social abilities. I think that matches the stereotype, but I think real human beings that are gay tend to be as varied in their personality and wit as straight people.
I don’t think you were trying to be offensive in anyway, and I am not trying to harsh to you, but I just had to point that out.
Honestly, I don’t think Brittany meant to be offensive. I am sure she meant it in a nice way. I love her. I am not saying we should boycott her or burn her at the stake. However, i think it is important for people to understand that making generalization of groups of people actually harms individuals. I also agree with the comment that it was condescending. My puppy is “adorable”, my 2 week old niece is “adorable”, my gay friends are….people. I honestly think she meant well and I am actually not surprised or offended by the comment. I just think that maybe, in the future, she should consider thinking more before she speaks.
I agree 100% June. I don’t think Britney (or teehee) intended to be cruel or offensive with the statements, I don’t think people should boycott Britney, but as you said, what she said was offensive because of the generalization.
“because of the generalization”– thats what I said in my original comment. And I dont think its offensive simply because its ‘true’- not the generalization, but, the trend of very witty gays/bi for example: Rosie O’Donnell, Carson Kressley, *supposedly* Richard Simmons, even Glööckler, MK, Michael Stipe, Ellen DeGeneres….. they all shine a light and fire that no other people have, and I can only associate it with their orientation.
Does that mean ALL of them are that way? Absolutely not, especially those that arent in showbiz. Even a lot that are, are not all eccentric.
But do I notice the tendency? Yes…. and I dont meant it in a bad way, in fact I mean it as the highest compliment. I could never do what they do but I sure love to watch them. 🙂
Seriously NO ONE competes with Richard!
And possibly as long as ‘they’ have to be referred to as a separate group of people, rather than as the individuals that they are, or the fact that they are also a part of ‘all people’, then it automatically comes across as derogatory. Its an error of human comprehension and language, that some actually take to heart as the truth, rather than seeing it as a limitation of thinking and speech. Sure they are people! but they have to be ‘labelled’ just to be sure which ones we are referring to…. and hence the problem is there before anythign was even said, pretty much.
I don’t think Britney really gets why that’s not right.
Yay for falling Kardashian ratings. Let’s hope they’re a thing of the past very soon.
It’s hard for me to care about anything Brit says, but didn’t Brandi Glanville say something similar to this? Makes me wonder if they’re both just playing into their owm silly blonde stereo types.
people say stuff like that all the time re: gay people- like, “I love gay people!” really? you love all gay people? that’s weird. that’s a weird thing to say.
The Kardashian empire is crumbling? Ha! Did anyone else feel like last week’s episode was redone to make LO look bad? It reminded me of all the reshoots Kim did to show her marriage to KHump was in trouble.
Gay people think similarly of Britney. I’d also say adorable and hilarious are probably the biggest complimentary words she can think of.
To a lot of people gays are just entertainment or a ‘token’ person they can claim to know.
“Apparently, the Kardashian reality shows are losing their audience.” It’s End Times, y’all. End Times.
“It’s healthy that we have a break,” claims Farrah, 22 (whose dad lives near her and Sophia in Texas). “She has her own life and is doing her own thing, and I’m doing mine.” What kind of mother says that about her 4-year-old? That poor kid.
Really!! Most moms think a break means going to a movie or out to dinner with adults. Geez.
I know! She talks about her 4 year old like she’s 20 not a soon to be kindergartener! She is truly a piece of work
In a honesty though it probably is healthier they have a break and that the kid is “doing her own thing” because Farrah seems like a pile of toxicity that would poison a young child’s life.
I don’t watch Glee but Lea Michele is so talented. She really has a way of injecting emotion into what she’s singing and her cover of Make You Feel My Love made my knees buckle. Such hard times for her. I wish her all the best.
(in all fairness I only read the title) it seems as if she’s talking about her pets
I don’t think Britney’s trying to be offend. She was never a Rhodes scholar to begin with… she speaks simply and she’s sweet. Pop stars who go on about “the gays” (gaga) come across as much more offensive than Brit.
I honestly don’t think she was trying to offend anyone. She’s not the brightest blub on the Christmas Tree lol.
Cute Nahla and Olivier having some one on one time.I bet she adores her baby brother.
I really didn’t need to read that article to confirm that Backdoor Teen Mom is a terrible mother.
Who cares???
There’s a video of a kitty playing a theremin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
News flash, kids: most of our current celebrities are complete idiots. Enjoy! 🙂
People who only read headlines and not the full quote are …__________
Well you fill in the blank
The full quote is, “”A lot of my hair stylists and my beauty team that I work with are gay so I hang out with gays a lot and I just think they’re adorable and hilarious.”
I don’t see how that makes it any better.
Oh, Britney. Oblivious as usual. Am on the fence as to whether deep down, she really is that offensive? It’s hard to take seriously anything that she or her team says. Anyway, I give up.
Farrah is awful on a whole other level. Maybe her kid IS better off without her.
How is it NOT offensive? Because she stereotyped with something nice?
I guess I was thinking she may blithely ignorant (i.e., not hating or being malicious with harmful), which less offensive (maybe?) than being full-on offensive in believing that LG folk are 2nd-class citizens and not worthy of respect, etc. Yes, both are offensive, just questioning whether she truly espouses harmful and offensive beliefs, or if she would see the light with a little education about the lesbian and gay community. It’s really hard to say, because so much of Britney’s career has been what I call smoke and mirrors, and so even if “sources close to Britney” are always saying she’s really a sweet person, we just don’t really know and I sort of think it’s a waste of time to spend too much energy on Britney and her team. By all means, educate those around you, but forget trying to change the life and mind of someone like her. Not because she’s not worth it, but because she’s beyond our control, as it were.
She has a pretty big gay fanbase. If they don’t take offense, leave her alone.
I respectfully disagree. I don’t have to be a mentally ill person to realize that Miley’s tweet making fun of mentally ill people is wrong. I think that’s actually one of our problems as a society. No one is offended by anything unless it effects them. I don’t think someone’s negative opinion on what Britney said is invalid just because they are not gay.
In Britney’s defense calling gays adorable and hilarious is in her mind a compliment. I don’t believe she meant to generalize or potentially offend anyone. So I agree with the commenter above who said this is much ado about nothing.
In an age where gays are still persecuted across the globe, let’s not get too excited about Britney’s comment about her beauty team and hair guy. She wasn’t talking about gays in general, she was making a specific comment about specific people.
If those specific people are fine with the comment, then I’m not prepared to be insulted on their behalf.
The full quote makes it pretty clear she was talking about gay people in general.
That’s right. It’s a quote, not the whole dialog. Read more to understand the context before you judge.
The whole dialogue makes it clear she is talking about gay people in general and that is offensive. Be willing to judge, even if you are a fan of someone’s lukewarm pop.
I have family and in-laws who are gay, and yes, they are hilarious for all the ways they are stereotyped. My family is Hispanic and we embrace and laugh at our stereotypes when it is meant in jest. IN JEST, not racist people who are being anuses. Clearly, Brit Brit was trying to be cute and funny. She wasn’t trying to speak out on human rights or anything like that. Context, people.
I don’t think that Britney was trying to be offensive or homophobic at all, but I’m glad everyone’s not just giving her a pass on the othering because she’s Britney. After all, Brandi Glanville and Miley Cyrus didn’t get a pass.
So glad the Kardashians are losing ratings! Maybe within the next 2 years they won’t be everywhere.
Geez, people, lighten up. The comment was not mean spirited in the least. I have three gay friends who are all funny, outgoing and absolutely loyal, wonderful friends. They would say the same about me. My life is richer for knowing them.
Christina looks fab. That dress is Muse by Dita Von Teese by the way
Some of the gays are the very best friends that you can ever have.
Poor Farrah spent her last dimes on boobs, a bright yellow car, and an aesthetician for her child. Were we all really this stupid and age 20 ?
oh Brit-Brit, no one has ever referred to me as adorable and hilarious before. uhm… thanks?
I just read an article on Slate about this, and apparently she was on a radio show discussing her new single, “Work B**ch”: “The hosts asked [Britney] if she drew on gays when crafting her music,” and the above was part of her response. My thought is that, like the author of the article suggests, she may have been trying to find a way to shift the conversation.
The question from the hosts in the context of discussing a single song–and this one in particular–is bizarre, if not offensive, because the hosts were inferring some link between the song and the gay community that isn’t actually there. Britney was trying to think fast while live on air, and may have wanted to answer in a way that didn’t cause the conversation to go in a direction she wasn’t prepared for, and so she said something intended to be non-inflammatory–“adorable” and “hilarious” are, as others have pointed out, complementary. I’m not saying it was the most eloquent response, but I’d be more peeved at the radio hosts than at her.
Re: Britney’s statement
It seems that nowadays, people cannot voice an opinion without someone being offended or crying about discrimination/hate speech etc. It is beyond ridiculous! I am 100% certain that Britney meant no ill will to the gay community. With her mental issues, (medications?) perhaps her words/thoughts do not come out as she intends.
As far as Michelle Duggar. It is her body so IMO, she should be allowed to decide how many children she chooses to have.
It is her body. However she takes no environmental responsibility by stating, “I think that the whole mindset of overpopulation is really overrated.”
I am going to quote Louis C.K. here, but I really love this.
“If you believe that God gave you the earth, that God created the earth for you, why would you not have to look after it? “
As a gay man, who dislikes Streisand, musical theater and has no taste or style, I say, consider the source. If it wasn’t written by her publicist, she can’t really think for herself. She’s only speaking of her limited view of the world. She can’t even sign a check so asking her to be insightful is a moot point.
I’m giving her a big pass! I just wish she could go home and retire. Conservatorships are for severely incapacitated people. She shouldn’t be out performing like she’s a circus animal.
Just my opinion.
Loved your post!
I detest Streisand and musical theater too. It’s unfortunate there are MANY uneducated people out there like this dimwit that think gay people are like poodles or pet rocks
As a gay man I can’t even get angry about this ridiculous, pandering comment considering the source is an uneducated, washed-up ‘singer’ who sounds like she has a helium tank inside her lungs.
