Yay! We get to end our week with some Tom Hiddleston! Thank God. I’ve been looking for a reason to write about him all week, especially after Tommy finally made me a Full Dragonfly with his slumber party video (oh, Tommy!). Thor 2: The Amazing Loki did well at the American box office last weekend, and the film has already made crazy money overseas. And now the promotional tour is over, which is sad for us because we no longer get Dancing Hiddles, Snake Hips Hiddles, Pimp Coat Hiddles, Singing Hiddles, Shakespeare Hiddles or Duck-Sonnetting Hiddles. OR DO WE? CB just sent me this video and… I have no idea when this was filmed or how new it is, but I’ve never seen it, so why not talk about it? Here’s Tommy emotionally singing “Stand By Me” during an appearance on the German web series “Stars In Cars”:
Such a songbird! I love him more for being a bad singer (I’m a bad singer too, Hiddles! Let’s be together and NOT do karaoke!). You know what? I would imagine that Tommy is amazing at road trips. He’s dorky but fun. I want to take him to Graceland (in my pants). Oh, and here’s Tommy juggling!
You know what’s fun? Imagining his juggling dialogue as sex dialogue. “I can hold the beer with my shoes… Oh, it’s happening… Oh, look at that. IN THE CAR.”
CB says that they’re driving through Mitte, which is the touristy area. The Holocaust Memorial is in the background of some of the video. What was shocking to me, however, is that people are allowed to drive around metropolitan Berlin with a glass full of beer. America has pretty strict open container laws, even for passengers, so I was taken aback by Hiddles’ beer.
Also, MTV released this weird, awkward, dorky video of Tommy playing around with Josh Horowitz. This isn’t as cute as the slumber party video.

He is not adorable. He is exhausting. he is the guy you get stuck next to a dinner party that talks too much and tries to impress you with his impersonations and what not. He embodies everything that i find annoying about actors: look at ME!!! My brother is an actor and i find there to be two types, the ones who are desperate for attention like Tom, who has to be the centre of attention at every party and the shy, more humble ones
@Han: I think you’ve nailed it when you described the two types of actors. It’s not that he’s not a terrific actor — he is. It’s just he’s the EXHAUSTING terrific actor. I’ve known my share of them (even dated a few) and boy… I’m just pooped and need to hermit myself for days after an encounter.

I just saw Thor 2 and loved it, and I love him, but I am feeling a tad over saturated on his singing and dancing bear act. It is starting to feel like an exhausting gimmick. Time to step down TommyAnnE and be real. This was never meant to be a full time job.
I feel the same way when other actors get over promoted with the release of films etc but all is quiet now that he is in rehearsals for Coriolanus. He follows that with Crimson Peak which usually means he goes into hibernation like the performing bear he is.What we are getting here is from his promotional tour.
He has said he does “his performing bear routine” i.e the silly stuff because it breaks the monotony of answering the same old questions in interviews which is understandable. Some of it like the MTV Loki’d videos just leave me cold the although the slumber party was fun.I was mildly surprises that some of my online friends who are not TWH fans said his singing was good.
But yes some down time would be good.
Yes THIS. He’s the high-maintenance guy that always needs the attention to be on him. He never asks you any questions about your life or shows any interest in getting to know you, you simply function as an audience for his antics
Unfortunately, I’m super-attracted to guys like this because they’re generally very charismatic, funny and charming. However, from my personal experience, they do NOT make good boyfriends because it’s all about them, all the time and it’s exhausting.

I should have added IF Hiddleston is this type of guy, which I could easily believe him to be.
I think what we see is his public personality which he admits is pretty upfront. He does admit to being a show off as a young child. A lot of people speak highly of in so I doubt this is his private face. He is noted for his charm and the one thing about charming people is that they do know how to focus on others and make them feel special. It’s pretty much a given because if being the life of the party is your primary personality trait it wears thin pretty quickly.
He was voted house captain at Eton and one of the primary roles is to insure that newcomers settle in well and to insure other pupils have some one to go to. You have to have pretty good interpersonal skills and the ability to think of others just not your own needs.

I have been around actors for a good portion of my life including a stint at drama college and my experience is that they are pretty varied in personality traits. Some are very extrovert, some are introverted but many fall somewhere in between. I have several good friends who I would describe as intelligent, creative people with a wide range of personality traits.
This I suspect is very much Tom’s public/promotional face.We all have public and private faces to varying degrees and it tends to vary according to the situations we are in. Like the fast majority of people he will present differently in some situations. He presented very differently at Cannes much more subdued but his enthusiasm and intelligence was still in evidence.
While I do really like Tom, I find I can only handle this kind of Tom in small doses. It just… gets to be too much. Even my kitten is side-eyeing him.
How is the kitten, btw? Settling in?
(I, as you know, can take very large doses of Tommy. Probably more than I should)

Miss Eyre, I like to play with them using the laser pointer, and they are entranced. They are also smart and figured out that he red dot monster comes from that device Mommy holds. So they took it apart, thinking that they would find it nestled inside. They were playing hockey withe the battery at 3am.
Oh Miss Eyre, it is an undeveloped theory. Besides, loving CHemboy looks positively divine…..

I do think on occasions he gets a bit OTT mainly when he and Josh get together but to be fair he has been the main actor plugging the heck out of Thor 2 and I guess he deserves some time to just let his hair down and be a bit silly. I do like that he does know how to enjoy himself at the promotional events no matter how tedious they must become.
There were moments in both of those vids that made me LOL. I really like Tom. I find both he and Josh Horowitz to be adorably idiotic in that pillow fight clip.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I could only handle Tom if I were drunk.

He really is, isn’t he?! I can see how people might find him a bit much, but I can’t help loving the bones of him. To me he just comes across as a very upbeat, happy guy who’s not afraid to be his dorky self. And in his defence, I think it’s kind of unfair to assume (as a few people upthread have mentioned) that he would be all about himself from the interviews we see him do. He is being asked about himself in them constantly – he just responds with a lot of enthusiasm!
I think it comes more from experience with other actors that he reminds them of. Obviously it’s just a guess. 🙂

Good point, Julia. I also read somewhere that he finds the interviews where he is asked to do random silly things to be more fun for him than the ones where he just gets asked the same questions over and over again.

The hard part of ANY public person is we don’t get to see a well-rounded picture.
Agree, LadySlippers. All we see is what they want us to see. I think projection and speculation only become a problem when they start to become accepted as fact.
It is part of human nature that people see what they want to see and there for should be subjugated and forced to spend a week as his personal servant washing his dirty dancing socks, arranging karaoke dates and hunting for his juggling balls.

Tom is doing what he was hired to do, pimp the movie. We live in an age where we see every interview from every where all the time. Of course we’re sick of it. Like TH said recently, “I say ‘yes’ a lot,” “It looks like I’ve been a circus bear, but it’s more fun to do that sort of thing than to endlessly recycle answers.”
We won’t see him in the US at least, until he does press for OLLA in May, right?

I don’t remember this one, I mean I remember the “circus bear” when he was first asked about SK dancing but not the rest.
He said something to that effect after the Smosh prank interview (which I personally found to be uncomfortable and over the line…the bit with the water was disgusting).
The Smosh prank interview was a washout but give him his due he coped with it really well.
I think I saw it translated in reference to his singing something like this won’t impress the girls but it could have been in reference to his juggling.
Oh, I don’t put the blame on him for the prank interview. He coped as best he could. I think the problem was that he’s at his best when he’s in on the joke and can bounce off his interviewer a little bit. That what seems to happen with him and Horowitz.
When he’s not in on it, apparently we end up with someone who reacts to odd behavior by getting quieter and more polite, to the point of drinking out of a glass someone’s coughed in. That’s no fun to watch. I think the prank set up would have worked better on someone who’d put his foot down, or someone who’d start pranking back a bit and doing strange things themselves.

I dont know…I know some people are tired of him or whatever, BUT I think he deserves a break cause it’s his job. It’s his job to talk about himself and I the studio tells him when and where to go and want him out there doing everything he can. But hey…that’s just me.
Plus, after reading his interview in that UK newspaper where he was like “i know what I say at times can come off as pretentious ” etc etc…just a lot of different quotes it just seemed more him. So…call me naive for believing lol but personally I like seeing him .
Tom strikes me as a person who craves attention (and a person who really wants people to like him), but at the same time, he seems like a funny, smart, down-to-earth kind of guy. He also seems like he has a lot of energy. Perhaps he doesn’t always know what to do with it, hence all of the singing and dancing and what not. I think that as he gets older, all of that attention seeking behavior may die down.
With that said, I still like the guy and find him very compelling to watch on screen. In interviews, he’s not as witty as Cumberbatch (whom I love, love, love), but I still find him to be very sweet and pretty genuine.
And I absolutely loved the video that he did with Cookie Monster. So cute!
I love his interviews because much of what he says is relevant and interesting. I find Benny in interviews comes over as a bit superior but I saw him discussing Frankenstein and he did impress me then. He certainly was not funny when he did his Assange promotional work.
I think Tom does like to be liked and he admits he avoids confrontation. You can tell if he is pissed off in an interview because his language becomes very neutral and his facial expressions go very bland.
The thing is most people like to be liked but it one of the fragilities of human nature that too often we prefer to give the impression that this is not the case.. But wanting to be liked does not necessarily exclude being assertive when required and even better if you can do it with sensitivity.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to be liked. It is not at all the same as being needy. I agree that I don’t understand why people feel like admitting that you want people to like you is a weakness. It’s not. It just makes interacting with our fellow humans a more pleasant experience. And yes, it doesn’t mean that you can’t stand up for yourself when it’s called for or set boundaries.
I have a friend very much like I imagine Tom to be, larger than life in public, always demanding attention, has to be the main focus, but less so in private and genuinely very nice despite what people may think about him. A poster up thread said she thought it’d be tiring but would miss it after a while and that’s absolutely what it’s like. You miss it very quickly when that sweet, crazy energy isn’t there any anymore.
Oh and I married a ‘me, me, me’ boy. Don’t worry, they can be trained out of that behaviour to some extent. Like puppies 🙂
That’s pretty close to my take on him. I do see a desire for attention and approval. Those can be problematic traits if someone takes them too far or is especially self-centered, but there are more productive ways of channeling those impulses too. Tom seems to basically be a good guy, so I’m not bothered that he’s a bit that way.
Benedict is a little different – more comfortable snarking and not so eager to please. I like both men, however, and I do think it’s really nice to have popular actors and sometimes sex symbols who both are smart and are comfortable presenting themselves that way. That’s a little outside the norm.

I LOVE, love love love to sing in the car…it makes me happy! My son loves to sing with me but he says I have a nice voice while his is awful (he’s joking)…that’s what this video reminds me of…my son and I singing in the car together. Once again Kaiser and CB you are absolute angels for finding all of these adorable videos of Tom. I would sing in the car with him anytime, anywhere. And to be having a beer, while in a car (as a passenger of course…safety first), in Germany would be so fantastic! Lucky devils they are.
Singing in the car is great. I was once singing along with the Beach Boys an banging out the rhythm on the steering wheel and when I got to my meeting one of the nurse managers who saw me thought I was completely stressed out and asked if I was OK. I had to tell him I was having a teen moment

I have never found Hiddleston all that interesting. I mean he is good looking and funny but i don’t find him that attractive enough to catch my attention. It’s like he tries too hard to be funny or something. I get rather tired of hearing about him to be honest. I’ve more of a slightly embarrassing crush on Benedict Cumberbatch for nearly 3 years. I am not the type to fangirl but mhmm he is my exception.
I give him a pass, he is legally obligated to promote the movie with his contract so he is just trying to uphold his end of the deal. Plus I am sure he would rather be doing silly skits and dances than being stuck in a hotel room sitting in a chair for 20 hours with the press line asking him the same question over and over.
Plus he seems to be picking up the slack for Chris H. he didn’t do much promotion for the movie at all. Maybe he had some family issues to deal with at home.

Ok,my Husband and I saw Thor 2 this weekend. *Squeal about Loki. You have my attention, mr. Hiddleston. Idris Elba is entirely too magnificant of a creature to be from this plane of existence, this movie explained so much!!
I first had a bit of a “thing” for Tom after Avengers, but it fizzled out very quickly, and in a huge way. I went from giggling over how wonderful he was to actively avoiding anything that had to do with him over the course of a few weeks. And for a long time, the dude just annoyed me. Because he does really like attention, he does like to be adored, and boy is he a wordy one.
But now with seeing him more with the promo for Thor: TDW, I must say, I’m seriously reconsidering. Because honestly – I have tried so hard to detect phoniness with him, and I just can’t. The guy seems so genuine. It really is so nice to see an actor who doesn’t act like promoting their work and thanking fans is a huge chore. Tom’s lack of cynicism is very endearing.
What’s funny is, for as much of a “people pleaser” as he comes off as, he is most certainly his own person. He’s both intelligent and a goofball, and he never tries to play it cool. I appreciate that. He may want people to like him, but that’s not so bad in his instance, because I hardly see him conforming to Hollywood.
Some of his flaws fall on the annoying side, but you know what? Those flaws don’t detract from him seeming like a really good, sweet guy. I usually have quite the bad boy complex but his lack of “bad” is awfully refreshing.

He can drink, juggle and sing in my car any day. I haven’t had such a crush since the first ‘Twilight’ movie and I couldn’t get enough of Robert Sparkles Pattison. It soured somewhat though in the following movies where he just wasn’t half as hot (bad hair and bad contact lenses).
