Now that I’m on Team Dragonfly, I’m starting to feel sort of protective of the dork known as Tom Hiddleston. He’s so earnest. He’s so delicate. I feel like his gentle English sensibilities might be damaged by the sheer crudeness of Americans. Not that all Americans are crude. Not that the occasional herpes or “brony” joke is too much to handle. But I do wonder about our poor Tommy. The Smosh guys decided to “interview” Tom for Thor 2: The Earnest Loki and I guess the whole thing was a prank. I get the feeling that Tom didn’t go into this knowing it was a prank but he was trying to play along:
I laughed at the herpes glass and I was amazed that Tom drank out of it. I also appreciate that Tom’s good nature saved several failed jokes. At the “brony” part of the conversation, I just completely lost interest in the “prank” though. The bit had gone on for too long. There was nothing charming there and I just felt sorry for Tommy. By the way, since I had to look it up (because I’m old), “brony” is “a bro who loves My Little Pony”. And yes, Tommy is probably a Full Brony. Then I turned it off at the 4 minute point. This video made me appreciate Tommy’s ability to literally do ANYTHING to promote a movie. Somebody give him another Hollywood franchise, please. This man was made to shill.
Thanks to Miss Jupitero for the tip!

About 50% of that was brilliantly funny, and the other half was a bit cringeworthy. God bless our TommyAnne, though. Both for being game and wearing a lovely tight shirt.
The more I see of Tom, the more I like him. He is so game for anything and accommodating!
Yes. Charming and accommodating. But you have to admit that the tight shirt also helps.
I love watching you and Kaiser become Dragonflies! His Coriolanus is love-streaming in cinemas nationwide January 30 (NTLive.com for tix). Can I request a CB review, if it’s playing locally to you ladies? I’m pretty sure that a bunch of us will be going to see it.
Fanty – wouldn’t it be great if we could all go together? Just a gaggle (herd? flock?) of Celebitches, taking over a theatre? I can see it now…
He is charming. He has the grace under pressure thing down. I second Fanty’s motion about covering Coriolanus.
Fanty, I’m not sure it’s streaming by us live. We can always watch it separately and report back. I see it’s streaming on Netflix, has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and has Ralph Fiennes in it! I’m sold. I’ll watch it before January 30th.
You can see a list of theatres streaming near you here:
http://ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk/productions/ntlout5-coriolanus
It looks like they’re still adding screens – one of our local theatres usually does live streaming events like this but they aren’t listed yet.
Definitely watch the RF version! It’s amazing! But it is not the TommyAnnE version obviously. I’m a lite sad that NTLive is not more widely available. I have loved everything they have shown this far.
Note the Rubber Tree Plant of Humiliation!
I cringed through a good deal of it. They also have out takes, and then that meme. Poor TommyAnnE. Yes he is born to shill, but he did not have to drink from that glass.
Fanty, are you going? I already got my ticket to see MY baby (our, j.eyre, our)!
I got my tickets to see it at UCLA on Feb 8. Anyone other LA CBers want to meet for a drink?
Oh Ms. J I would so fly out to LA to have a drink with you on that day and celebrate Tom.
Yes. I’m going Jan 30 in NYC to City Cinemas on the UES.
Miss M, did you see the Fiennes version? Not only is it breathtakingly good, but (and this is the ONLY time I will ever cop to this) Gerald Butler is totally do-able in it. I dunno. The combo of iambic pentameter, army fatigues and homoerotic undertones got me all of a tizzy.
*rushes off to wash mouth out with soap and water*
I can corroborate Fanty’s assertion that Butler is doable in the Fiennes version. It was the first thing I ever saw him in and was rather impressed.
The afore mentioned Fiennes is also completely doable too… and don’t get me started on Vanessa Redgrave. Oh – Brian Cox! Hmmm, may have to watch this again.
I actually showed a bit of it to my students yesterday, and I think that half of them went home and watched it. It really is EXCELLENT. And yes, Fiennes is always doable, even old, porky and bald.

Ahaha, Fanty! I *just* rewatched the English Patient the other day. I saw it in theatres but was clearly to young to appreciate the sex that just oozes out of that movie. Seriously every character in that movie gives me chills now. In a good way.
Fanty: I started, but somehow didn’t finish. I ‘ll go back to netflix , when I have a chance, to finish watching. I cannot wait to see Hiddleston in Jan. I bought my ticket in September, hahaha. In my defense, they sell out pretty quickly.
ps: You know Butler is doable, no matter what.. Just admit it!
@T. Fanty who said ” Yes. I’m going Jan 30 in NYC to City Cinemas on the UES.”
I know you’re a little peeved at me now but I just might have to stalk your ass on that date and give you a big old hug and apology. 🙂
“The English Patient” – oh dear, can’t watch this beautiful film without getting misty-eyed …
Does anyone remember Colin Firth singing and dancing?
@V4Real,
No apology needed, but I will take that hug! Are you coming? I’ll provide beer!
I’m not a huge fan, but I do have a soft spot for him. He seems almost vulnerable at times – as if he’s sincerely earnest about things, and Hollywood and all its attendant craziness is too much for him. Poor Hiddles.
Same here, I’m not a massive fan but he appeals to me nonetheless. Maybe it is his earnestness, I just want to hug him and say that it’ll be okay, he doesn’t have to try sooooo hard all the time, lol.
Ha! Well said. He needs to try just a little less. Still, given the choice between him and the sneering, cursing, “I can’t be bothered with you plebians” of some other stars, I’ll take him. At least he takes his job seriously.
Well, Tom shilled for RUSH for Chris, while promoting either Thor 2 or something else. Maybe Chris should just outsource all the future shilling to Tom – for Cyber, Sea, Huntsman 2…
Hahahahaha, yes. didn’t Tom talked about Rush in one of his interviews and the interviewer brought the convo back to be about Thor again, lol
ps: Anna, did you see the photos of CHems with India?! The cutest thing in the world.
Couldn’t they just add each other to their rider requirements?
Wait, I can make up a rider and add them to mine?
Morning ladies! You all were right, a “source” confirmed to Hola! magazine that Elsa is three months pregnant. Sigh….
I’m sorry – I thought Tom’s Rider was commonly known as me.
(tragically, very commonly known)
That’s my LIFE rider. Both of them.
@Marty: Woohoo! Thanks for the info!
@Kaiser: Eat it! 🙂
@Fanty: Please… Go back and ask Kaiser to write something about your King. Please, let the Dragonfly King to the dragonfly Goddesses. 🙂
Hello Miss Anna – I’m sorry for your bad news today. When are you coming to NYC? Come in January and see Coriolanus with me!
The Stateside trip is in late April. Tho I might be burnt out on NYC. Feel free to shoot me now. At least that would put me out of my misery.
I love TommyAnnE. Seriously, Chris should kind of watch his back. Everyone’s talking about TommyAnneE in Thor 2, and with Rush underperforming at the box office in the US….and his apparent issues with Marvel….he should be more careful. I do wish TommyAnneE wasn’t with WME. He’s being shuffled aside in the slew of actors there…He needs to be at UTA or one of the slightly smaller agencies…JMO. He’s such a good actor and has oodles of charisma, and he should be booking more major roles or juicy supporting roles with great directors.
Agree completely. FWIW, I went to see Thor2 to see Loki, not Thor. Hemsworth does nothing for me…I just kept waiting for Hiddles to show up on the screen. He always looks like he’s having the best time ever. 🙂
Tom and Stellan Skarsgard absolutely stole the movie – I was way more interested in their scenes than anyone else’s!
I didn’t get past the mispronunciation of the kids last name. What you described sounds like I was right shutting it off. I adore TommyAnna but there are some things I don’t want to see him do. And those kids struck me as punks
It would be fine if he knew what was coming, but judging by his puzzled silences I think he didn’t.
On the other hand, aren’t these guys famous for exactly this?
Stay away from our Dragonfly King, uncouth ruffians!
Based on the outtakes, it looks like he might have known it was a prank.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Up3ffLcNvI
I don’t know if that makes the whole thing better or worse.
(I very much doubt that the Marvel PR people would have let the Smosh guys into the junket line without knowing what the deal was, and alerting Tom to it. I still think it’s dumb and mean.)
I think this makes it much worse. TommyAnnE!
I think if they asked him to do something over the line, he wouldn’t have done it.
Silly question: where did the name TommyAnne come from? Been wondering about that…
It’s a play on Pollyanna and Anne Hathaway, stemming from Hiddles’ need to please, which is mostly endearing, but occasionally a little try-hard.
Ha…that’s clever! Never would have figured that out. Thanks! 🙂
This just made me love him a little more; he’s so endearing. He was so accomodating when in his head he was probably like WTF. A minute in I would have made a beeline for the door with my phone in hand calling my agent to fire his ass.
This is kind of where I would be with it too.
Yes. I love that he’s game for anything and has the carisma for it.
I’ve seen this already, and I cringed for Tom when I first saw it. I thought that he was completely unaware he was being punked. He is much, much better when he’s in on the joke, and it could have been funny if he wasn’t so bewildered. I have to give him credit for trying his best to play along. Sigh, he’s so ridiculously adorable…
If you watch the outtakes – as Ellen posted above – he was in on the joke .
I agree he is a consummate professional.
Apparently he was in on it, and I hate it slightly less because of that.
But he’s still one of the worst possible people for this sort of prank interview, because his default reaction when confused is to be very, very polite and do whatever is asked of him. This sort of interview would have worked better with someone a bit sassier.
That made me love him even more. I mean I stopped the video after 3 minutes, 3 minutes during which Tom remained professional and charming while those unfunny idiots made cringeworthy “jokes”.
He sure is professional and patient, I would have walked out of that interview after 30 seconds.
@Myrto: “Unfunny idiots” – you nailed it. There is nothing witty or enjoyable about this so called interview. I felt sorry for Hiddles (and would have felt sorry for everyone else) and stopped the stupid video after 2 minutes.
Give this guy a medal. He has the patience of a saint. Can you imagine any other actor putting up with that for that long? Actually maybe, but I don’t know if they would have the same grace.
They asked at the end of the video who we’d like to see them interview next. Hmm, I’d like them to try this on Samuel L Jackson, Tommy Lee Jones or maybe Harvey Keitel. How about Alec Baldwin. Yeah, payback would be a bitch.
YES. Let them try this on any of those guys. PLEASE.
Benedict….I need the smarta$$ness to come back like in Reddit. I don’t think he’d agree to do that or he would turn the tables on them.
I think Cumby would be perfect, because I think he would turn the snark back around at the interviewers and end up giving some great quote. Someone like Alec Baldwin would just have a tantrum, and we don’t need a prank interview to see Alec Baldwin losing his temper.
Just when I thought my love for Tom couldn’t get any more ridiculous. He’s so patient with them and goes along with their mostly not funny jokes. Is that man ever not charming and thoughtful and gentlemanly?
Not that it matters and it’s a bit off topic but I heard about “Bronys” from when Eddie Rhimes (can never remember the spelling of his last name) was on Hot in Cleveland.
Anyway, glad Tommy is such a professional, that video was just cringe-worthy to me.
I laughed at some parts, and oh, he’s sweet. You kinda want to save him, punching those punks around. I mean, you have the oportunity to be with him and you waste like that? Yes, I’m a ridiculous fangirl, but I can’t help, he’s so harmless and lovely all the time!
Tom “circus bear” Hiddleston strikes again.
Dying of second-hand embarrassment, couldn’t watch it through till the end.
That shirt’s a winner though, love his casual style and nonchalance here.
He nailed both the Loki laugh and the Natalie Portman pose.
The brony thing made me laugh. Oh Tom…..
Smosh were funny once….or I’m just getting older…
I had to look up what a “brony” was too. No idea who sets interviews up for Tom but I would think that they would have vetted these guys and known ahead of time what they do so that Tom would have probably had an idea of what he was in for, even if he didn’t know every stupid thing they would do to him. Parts of the video were cute but those guys were annoying. Still, it’s more fun to watch Tom do that than see the same interview questions over and over again about Loki’s psychology.
This makes me want two things. One, for Tom to do a “Between Two Ferns” with Zach Galifianakis. Two, for someone to write a sketch in which Tom explains My Little Pony. I don’t care if he’s not actually into it, but that would be funny as eff if he adopted a “brony” thing as a running gag. He could totally do it with MTV, right? He’s done sketch-type stuff with them.
A SNL hosting gig has to be in his future. Right?
Seems like it would be perfect for him. He’s charming in all those little comedy skits he’s been doing (Cookie Monster, Comedy Central) and isn’t afraid to look silly. I’m guessing that having done theater would make doing live television seem a bit less intimidating as well.
It would be nice but I don’t think he’s well enough known yet here in the U.S. for that to happen.
This whole SMOSH thing is so annoying. Hate the video. will never watch it a second time. yeah, it’s promotion. but can we have a bit respect on the interviewee? they really treat hiddles like he’s circus bear. not funny at all. for so many times, I wish hiddles would just say ENOUGH! I’ll not be bullied by (creatures like you…)
he’s too patient and kind. Second to whoever above says let them try Samuel L Jackson!
I didn’t think it was possible to love him even more, but it is
Well. I wouldn’t even give this enough courtesy to call it a prank. Those two idiots come off like cackling jackals with brain damage. Is there something “funny” or clever about this that I’m not able to see? Frat boys are capable of better than this.
I stopped at 3 minutes. It was revolting. Do those guys have real jobs? From what I saw, it looked like Tom knew what was going on, & went along with it, although I can’t imagine why.
& yes, it would be fun to see them try that with Samuel Jackson. I might want to watch that.
+1
although i love him , i couldnt watch it to the end , feel soo embarrassing for him 🙁
I still haven’t plucked up the courage to watch it.
Okay looking at the out takes, it’s pretty clear that he knew what was going to happen even if he didn’t know *precisely* what they would do. So he is a genuine circus bear. I am still grossed out about the water.
Hmmmm. He also tweeted a photo of himself with the smosh guys, so I take that as a sign that he was just fine with this. No need to fret.
What/who is SMOSH? Never heard of them.
Googled it and saw some smelly looking douches with production values only slightly better than that annoying “It’s Fred” kid, is that them?
What I love about it is TommyAnnE’s confused expressions yet he still goes along with it. Bless him
You can’t unsee that.
I appreciate the CB TH posts. I thought I might go thru terrible withdrawls from our boy. Smosh proves he did just too many interviews for Thor TDW. I am trying to move my crush over to Tom Mison. I just mumble “Tom!” at night over and over and dream. Too bad my husband’s name is Bob.
Uh yeah. He needs a rest from all this shilling. He has enthusiasm, but…. he’s done with this. Time for some Shakespeare.
Somebody give Bunny back to him?
I am pretty sure he was in on at least some of the pranks. Perhaps there was a list and he got to skim it ahead of time? He didn’t looked surprised enough in a few of them, others he did.
I loved the shirt though.
