LUPITA!! She gives me life. Lupita Nyong’o won the Best Supporting Actress SAG Award last night for her work in 12 Years a Slave. I’m kind of thinking that Lupita’s on the upswing now, and that there’s a good chance she’ll ride to victory at the Oscars in March. Here’s hoping. Truly. I would love to see her win an Oscar. I also loved that she name-checked Yale Drama in her speech – it felt like, “Oh, by the way, this isn’t a fluke, I’m a supremely trained actress.”
As for her fashion… don’t kill me, but of all of the red carpet looks we’ve seen from Lupita in the past week (the red Ralph Lauren, the white Calvin Klein), this Gucci was maybe my least favorite. Of course, it’s still rather fabulous and Lupita makes it work really well, I’m just saying that I wasn’t balls-out in love with it. It sort of reminds me of Reese Witherspoon’s Calvin Klein from the Globes – is it the same shade of teal/turquoise? But here’s my favorite part: Lupita matched her eyeshadow to her dress and THAT is what really made the ensemble work. What could have been an ‘80s mess became fashion-forward and fabulous. PS: Ew, I just noticed her matching shoes. BAD!
Other winners – Helen Mirren won for her role in that Phil Spector HBO movie. Helen wore this fantastic Escada… this is what Meryl should have worn. It’s regal, conservative and still interesting and beautiful. It’s a Fashion Master Class.
And Rita Moreno won the Lifetime Achievement Award – CB says Rita has definitely had some face work but the work is really, really good. Personally, I just love that Rita wore LEATHER. She’s adorable. And I loved that she was wacky and she sang, and then Bryan Cranston jokingly “sang” after he won too.

Lupita was my second favourite look of the night. The colour looks great on her, and I love the detail in the neckline.
She looks stunning, like always, but I don’t like the eye shadow and lipstick combined with the dress. Too much in my opinion. Less color in the face and she would look perfect. Love the color of her dress though!
^^This. Very much. I love the color anyway, and it looks stunning with her glorious skin! Really don’t like the eye shadow or lip color though. Not sure if the eye shadow matched in person, but in photos, it looks like more of a purple blue color? Not sure if I would have liked it either way, but it bugs me twice this way… Once for being too bright, and again for being a different blue! I am creepy picky about my teals and aquas though, probably because I used them some in our house remodel a couple of years ago, and nearly went insane!😳

I agree. Matching your eyeshadow to a turquoise dress (and wearing bright pink lipstick) doesn’t make it fashion-forward. It makes it look like a cheap 80’s mess. The dress has enough shock value. Her makeup and accessories don’t need added shock value.
I just love everything. Lupita is a class act. Very gracious. Who else could look so incredibly stunning in this dress and makeup? .Lupita is Brave in a multitude of ways.

I think she looks stunning, matching shoes and all (what else could she have worn? Black would be too heavy, white too contrasting, and colour block is so 2012!) To me she just went on a more romantic tone, more dreamy kind of look and it worked!!

I was just going to post this! A metallic shoe would have been beautiful with this dress either way… But there seem to be some metallic accents in the strap design that would have tied in nicely with a metallic shoe as well.😊

Lupita’s first two red carpet looks (the red caped dress and the white dress) were perfection. This one I am less sure about. The color is gorgeous on her. The dress fits her like a glove. I don’t dislike the dress, per se, but it does smack a bit like an 80’s bridesmaid dress. As to Rita Moreno – wow. Just wow. At first glance, I thought it was Rue McClanahan, until I remembered that she’d passed. Then I looked again thinking it might be Jane Fonda. She looks fabulous, as does Helen Mirren.

It’s not a law to dislike someone’s dress. Personally, I love Lupita’s dress. I especially love the fact that she will rock color apologetically. She has gorgeous skin and it’s almost like she’s daring vibrant color to compete against it.

Lupita also has the best tailor of the entire awards circuit. Everything fits her like a glove, which means that even a lesser stylish dress still looks impeccable. That is a perfect example of craftsmanship. Not every actress would have been this lucky, because they don’t have Lupita’s guy/gal to make it fit.

I didn’t like the dress at first but the flowers around her next are flattering, the effect is very pretty even though they look tacky at first glance. It’s a strange look, it’s very retro, 60s/70s and Lupita manages to pull it off, along with the hairdo that I wasn’t sure of at first, just because she is so darn attractive. Le sigh.
She looks good with an award in her hand. I hope she gets the Oscar…

One of my favorites of the night! (Dress wise, that is). I also love Jennifer Garner’s and Emilia Clarke’s — and my No. 1 would be Juliette Lewis’. It reminds me of a cheongsam/qipao (perhaps because of the flowery motif and the silky material), but it just looks very lovely on Juliette. I hope CB will show it here :).
She looks 80s, but I don’t think that is bad at all. She looks amazing imo. Yes at her getting SAG + Critic’s Choice.

I don’t like the top necklace flower bit, or the matching shoes, but her arms look great and it fit her well.
I think Lupita looks fabulous! That color just jumps off her amazing body, which is just so electrifying. Not into the matching eyeshadow though. I think THAT makes it totally 80s.

Lupita needs some serious credit for changing up her hair on the red carpet. Many might think it’s the same, but the subtle differences in styling to work with overall look have been skillful and imaginative. So far, she’s done no wrong. (Granted, that’s easier to achieve when one is young, and naturally beautiful. But still…she’s a pleasure to behold.)
By the way, does anyone else love the fact that Rita basically said, “82? No, I’ll not dress 82. I’ll be wearing my leather, studded jacket with evening dress, thanks very much.”

Queen Helen is looking fabulous as usual. Don’t like Lupita’s dress; perhaps the color is too bright for me.
Love it. I love to see a woman of colour embracing brights-when I did more editorial stuff as a make up artist this was my favorite sort of palette to use. Lupita is a great person to work with because she’s absolutely fucking stunning…but I think on anyone else this would have been fussy…they wouldn’t have the ability to carry this off. I maybe would have gone with a strappy gold sandal instead…would have left the attention on the dress and her beautiful face.
Nyong’o’s dress could have toned down the embellishment on the top a bit, but overall it worked and it fit her perfectly, just like everything else she’s worn so far.

I love Lupita’s dress, she looks gorgeous in it, but THOSE SHOES! Argh, I hate those shoes. They look like hooves and they run the look of her, her legs, and of the dress. I would have gone with some sexy high-heeled strappy silver shoes. As it is, those shoes are like a lump of coal in a dreamy bowl of whipped cream. Fashion people have lost their collective minds over those shoes and not in a good way.

Her dress was awful!!! & the matchy matchy shoes were just as bad. I feel like people are saying her dress is nice just because they love her as a person. This is her first fashion miss. So far she’s dressed impeccably, but not this time.

Trip nitpicky things:
1) As kaiser said, the shoes. Yuck.
2) the eyeshadow actually doesn’t quite match and therefore clashes. Bummer cause I liked the idea in principle.
Helen’s dress is awful. It looks like two golden dragons are closing in on her breasts. Sometimes I feel that people react to her clothes based on her fabulousness rather than the clothes themselves.
Lupita herself looks wonderful. The dress and makeup are awful though. The eye shadow cheapens the entire look, in my opinion. It’s too “loud” and wasn’t even applied equally to each eyelid. The color is alright. She would have looked better in white like the CK dress she wore to the Critics Choice awards. This is not a good look on Lupita and I hope she chooses more wisely for the Oscars.
