I’m just checking in with the Swedish royals because I liked these new photos. Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel were in Hamburg, Germany yesterday as part of a two-day goodwill trip/tour. Isn’t Victoria cute? She seems genuinely happy and I kind of love Daniel’s grumpy resting face. He’s apparently a lovely man who adores Victoria, but I think his “resting face” is set to “grim”.
As you can see, Victoria is walking around on crutches, and she got a leg in a cast. Apparently, Victoria, Daniel and their daughter Estelle were vacationing in the Italian Alps a few weeks ago with Victoria’s parents and Vicky had a bad fall. Her ankle is reportedly sprained not broken, although I’m wondering if that’s really the case. That’s a pretty big cast if it’s just a “sprain”.
I wonder if they brought Estelle to Germany? I wonder if Victoria wants to get pregnant again? She’ll be expected to have an heir and a spare, won’t she? But regardless of a second baby’s gender, Estelle will always be queen. Sweden changed their constitution so Victoria would get the throne and not her brother, and now Estelle will benefit from that as well. Oh, and Victoria’s sister Madeline is expecting her first baby this spring as well.

They look great! Hoping for another baby in 2015 🙂
She seems genuinely nice. He does too. Really cute couple.
They use that big one to make sure your ligaments are protected and your ankle cannot move.
Yup.
It’s an air cast. And depending on which ligaments are affected (upper ankle) might require the big guns. OR the Swedish medical staff is being ultra conservative.
I wondered the same thing. Kind of favor ultra conservative. The better your status in the public and insurance the better and more preventative care you will receive.
Lovely couple those 2 make along with their too cute daughter.
Yup. A friend sprained his ankle very badly a few weeks ago and is wearing an air cast identical to this one.
she looks so perky that her husband looks so Misty Mountain Cold.
Apparently he’s anything but chilly. He doesn’t like being in the spotlight.
I googled them and – HE’S 40?!? He looks really good for 40.
They look great, but both of them have very unflattering hairstyles.
Apparently the slicked back do is a Swedish thang….
For an overdose of cuteness – and a less frosty version of Daniel – you can watch their Christmas cookie video. It is fun to watch with the sound on even if you don’t speak Swedish.

I love that video! I really wish the British royals would release something similar with George.
Kate is too busy twisting those sausage curls to ever come remotely close to trying to connect with her royal future peasants by showing how normal she and her family may be.
She has an utterly delightful smile. There’s something Kate Middleton-y about the waving photo, but I doubt that Waity will ever look that natural.
I have been looking at Vic’s pictures for a few days now – I think this is her 5th or 6th public engagement in the last week. No cancellations, keeps jumping, keeps traveling, smiley and cheerful. Can you IMAGINE if this was Kate? There would be no events for like 3 months!
even their not-yet-2 daughter works harder than Kate at this point.
Spot on about Kate comparison. Maybe people will wake up and smell the coffee. I think Kate must feel entitled to her life style because I don’t know how else to explain the lack of work ethic.
+ 1
I was coming on to say that. The wailing and gnashing of teeth if it happened to Kate! Engagements would be cancelled for months. Well, they would have if photos of Victoria walking on crutches or hopping up stairs at her engagements hadn’t been published!
You mean William? Can you imagine this was William? William is the heir like Victoria.
YES! Charles or William, not Kate.
True, but genderwise the comparison s apt.
Nope , Charles is the heir in the same position as Victoria , William is a grown up Estelle.
They are such a nice couple. Victoria gave an interview this week and she basically credited Daniel for helping her recover from her anorexia and making her happy. Theirs is a royal marriage to last if there ever was one.
Agreed! Love them, they are my fave royal couple.
They seem very sweet together, she is a very hard worker and I need her jacket in my life.
I love these two.
As someone who doesn’t care for Royals of any land, I really really like these two. They just seem like nice, normal people.
Yes they do. When it’s true and natural you don’t have to keep telling the world. The world will see it.
And her smile is the best.
I love them together and how they really seem happy with each other. Compare these two to Charlene and Albert. Yeah.
haha can you imagine if Poor Char appeared in an air cast? “Well, she was just walking to a cashmere shop in town, and she got lost again as she still can’t read French, and then she was accidentally snagged on some ground wire left around a princess pit up in the rough terrain of Mont Agel! But, she is so happy to be home and feeling well and will be working on her charities. She will also start taking some French lessons, so she can speak to her future children when she is ready to have them, sometime after the cast is removed and she is deemed healthy after water fitness therapy and….”
LOL. You forgot the part about how the water fitness therapy will be conducted by a newly credentialed rugby player from Africa!
I don’t follow them much. Are they unable to have children, or simply dislike each other too much to try? If she’s been miserable since day 1, why did she marry him?
Mayamae
I would also like the answer to that question. Of course, what else is a girl to do when the press won’t help her, her family won’t help her, and she’s tried to physically exscape the country 2 or 3 times and then her passport was taken away from her.
Albert is just gross. He stares at her with contempt if he looks at her at all and she looks just sad. Unless as bluhare said.. that dashing rugby player;)
And Albert has at least 1 child out of wedlock to someone other than his wife. He’s a known wanderer for strange.
Side note..That’s what it’s called, right? Stranger? New word i’m trying to get the hang of.
Charlene could have done MANY things if she really wanted to get out.
If she really was being held captive – which I have good reason to doubt somewhat – she could have called a press conference; or called a foreign journalist or two (who would have LOVED the scoop and would, no doubt, be very obliging in helping her escape the dark dungeons of Monaco); or she could have said NON (sorry: “No”) during the ceremony, with – literally – the whole world watching.
It would not have made her a bete noire – except in Monaco, of course, but there is a wide world outside Monaco – and she would be set for life because of all the lucrative offers for books and/or films coming her way. She would also be hailed – justly or unjustly – as a paragon of feminine assertiveness and confidence and what-not. Most of all, she would be free of a marriage that she did not want.
She is a grown woman. She COULD have done any of that – unless they (the Monegasque family) have really, really good dirt on her and they threatened her family or other loved ones. That I could understand.
Maybe they did. I doubt it very much, but I suppose it is possible.
Personally I think it is more likely she simply doesn’t have enough confidence to do that, or the trappings of her position were too tempting – or both.
Oh, and maybe she does love Albert.
Mel
Yes, she could have done all those things.. But!
Who’s to say the press would gather for her?
Who’s to say they would rather get in good with Albert?
Who’s to say she had the freedom to phone up reporters?
Maybe what was happening was some kind of dominance and control you see in abusive relationships. Some of those women can also just tell someone if they wished. Even those with very public personas that live with abuse privately hold those secrets in and can’t escape as easily as you say.
The lack of coverage on her escape attempts, lack of family support, makes me think that he’s cornered her somehow and this marriage happened out of a survival instinct. She couldn’t leave the country, no one paid attention to her small pleas that something was wrong, her fiance isn’t as faithful and great as she thought. She wanted out, but couldn’t.
You do make it sound very easy for someone to leave and to a certain extent it is that easy. The consequences play a greater role in decisions though and to her those might have been dire.
FLORC, I thought Princess Caroline was a decent person. Would she condone this? That family is a mess.
@bluhare — you’re right of course!! ah those friendly newly credentialed rugby lads.
I love/need/want that necklace!!
Slightly off topic: Hear the rumours Carl Philip has popped the question to Sofia????
Oh no! (Says the delusional woman who thought we could bump into each other some day and fall hopelessly in love :D). But wait, is that Sophia the one who used to be a p*rn actress?
Got to ask. soft or hard? Because there is redemption for soft. Or more so than the latter.
Hahahaha, I have no idea FLORC! I just thought I read something about it here on Celebitchy.
I had a bad spill down some stairs in 2009, with multiple tears in the ligaments around my ankle. I had the same type of aircast for weeks (but less nice crutches — I would have killed for the ones Victoria has). It depends, I think, on the severity of the sprain.
My orthopedist told me that the giant aircast was to stabilize the ligaments and minimize the residual damage, so I believe the doctors about her spraining it.
i love these 2 together and Estelle is super adorable and expressive. That’s one child who is a DIVA in the best possible adorable way.
Love Estelle. She’s adorable.
Oh, I just love them. I love that he was her personal trainer (read: normal person) and they became a couple. They really do seem very down-to-earth and charming, and they’re both totally adorable.
Adorbs!
I just sprained my wrist on some ice (Dammit, Swedish winter!) and they wanted to put that in a cast too.
Really?? An air cast for the wrist??? Wow. Yeah here in the US it’s either a splint or a plaster cast for almost any upper extremity injury.
Wrist and upper forearm to be exact. Twas a lovely drunk night. 😛
Damn! An air cast for that? We’d still splint or cast for that. And was it a FOOSH accident? (FOOSH means Fall On Outstretched Hand)
But drunk nights are the best — except when ice is involved. I’m guessing that’s what caused the fall, well that and being slightly ‘tipsy’. 😉
It was a FOOSH; instead of falling on my plump derrière, I stuck an arm out and am paying for it.
Ice is evil lol Being tipsy is always lovely, especially when accompanied by a Viking. Ahem. 😉
I’m jealous about the Viking! Lol Although I could go home to Minnesota for the American versions (I’m of Swedish descent as are lots of Minnesotans). 😀
However, not jealous of the arm injury! Lol I was in a car accident a few years back (snowy & icy) and had two arm I injuries that resembled a FOOSH compliments of the air bag. Hope you are all better now.
LadySlippers
Depending on the damage inside the wrist an air cast is not out of the norm here in the states.
My only question to Jenna is did they custom fit and build the cast to you or is it just a size like small, medium, large that has adjustable straps?
I actually went to school for occupational therapy and air casts (at least what I was taught here in the Midwest) tend to be bulky especially when there are numerous splints that can be created just for the person without all the bulk. So I know air casts can be used but a tailor made splint just for the client is even better.
LadySlippers
Did you go to school in the Midwest for OT?
Kitten Mittens (who hasn’t been here for a few months) is finishing up her Doctorate in Physical therapy. I think you’ll both enjoy each other’s posts on royalty. I’m a nurse and I do know there are different techiniques depending on where you are in the world or states.
There are some pretty thin air casts at my hospital. The way I want to describe it isn’t coming out right and no medical supply link is sticking. It’s like a splint in thickness and aircast inside.
FLORC, believe it or not I was wondering where the heck Kitten Mittens has been not too long ago.
Bluhare
Near San Fran on an air force base finishing up her schooling. She’ll be out of school paying off that massive debt, and complaining how she’s accomplished so much with little resources and Kate couldn’t manage to up her events to 1 a week soon enough:)
They look charming together and I hope they last and are this happy forever!
Agreed. They are my favorite royals. Just feel as if we could sit and have coffee together.
Is she wearing a necklace made of coal pieces? That’s so cool. It’s like a royal chemistry lesson. Diamonds at night, coal for the day.
Coal would smudge, wouldn’t it? I do love the “carbon by day/ice by night idea though.
You’re right, it would smudge, and I like your choice of words better.
Sorry to disappoint you people, here in Sweden she´s not considered so marvellous that you seem to think. Doesn´t work that much at all. She´s always considered to be so natural and lovely but in fact, look at all stuff she wears, designer labels mixed with some cheaper things to make it look like she´s just like the rest of us….I actually find it offensive. And Daniel…poor guy, a regular Swedish boy with nothing special and he is “promoted” to prince…….Please!
Matty
“A regular Sweedish boy promoted to prince”..? Is that a bad thing? He seems to genuinely love his wife and they do work more than the comparison on this site. The comparison is also a bit why they’re liked for some here.
What is their approval rating in your country? Or is your opinion the minority?
FLORC, I found the ratings from right after Estelle’s birth. Victoria’s approval was 74%, the King’s 46%. Of course Kate’s approval has jumped with George’s birth so that number was probably artificially high at the time.
Sorry, I know the question wasn’t aimed at me. I live in the Atlanta area where a few inches of snow have shut down the city and caused the governor to declare a state of emergency. I’m from the Chicago area, so I find it a bit amusing but incredibly boring to be snowed in.
mayamae!! Don’t apologize! If you do I’ve got to go around apologizing to everyone as I answer questions not directed at me all the time!
But I’m confused about your post as you threw Kate and George in there.
Mayamae
Listen to bluhare! Thank you for the answer. Sometimes we never know if a poster will return to the thread so I appreciate the info where ever I can get it.
And along with Bluhare I am also confused about the Kate and George bit in there..
Although I do appreaciate the stats I was more curous to the Swedish Royal families popularity.
If you know that please answer:)
@bluehare and FLORC. Maybe mayamae meant that we need to take Victoria’s approval ratings with a grain of salt, as the ones she found were done just after Estelle’s birth. What were Victoria’s approval ratings before the marriage, after the marriage but before Estelle, etc. The arrival of a cute baby could boost anybody’s ratings.
Or maybe she was pointing out this idea: Kate Middleton has a lousy work ethic and is justly criticized for it, but *even she* got a boost in popularity in poll ratings after George arrived. mayamae including KM as an example of how the birth of a baby can improve even a lazy royal’s approval ratings seems logical to me.
Also, since most of the other polls about royals probably aren’t conducted in English, the numbers about KM are probably easier to find for an English speaker than polls about Maxima, Letizia, Mathilde, etc. Maybe they all saw a short-term boost in their popularity after the arrival of the first child.
What My2Pence said. It wasn’t a Kate slam, just a comparison of new mother popularity. The statistics I used were on Victoria and her father. It was in a WSJ.com article.
M2Pence
Thank you for the clarification. I don’t know how I confused that.
And Letizia, Maxima, and Mathilde cannot be measured on the same scale as Kate. They’re strong female icons.
Mayamae
So sorry I didn’t understand you before. I see why the comparison. Babies do boost opinions, but that’s why I think most polls are fluff pieces to fill papers and keep people busy. I just always get curious where the numbers are coming from and hat the percentage of error is.
Thanks!
I’ve heard from other Swedes that she is well liked. The rest of the family not do much but people like her.
I’ve heard terrible things about her sister. No worse than calling her a “lady who lunches” and that’s not terrible since she’s not in a direct line to the throne at this point.
Florc, I’ve seen polls that have had Victoria firmly ahead of the rest of her family and not all were a post Estelle either.
Both Victoria’s siblings have had some ‘not-so-nice’ comments thrown their way. I was hoping someone would want to chat about Carl Philip’s possible engagement.
Sorry LS
I had to refresh my memory on him. That engagement seems like it’ll bring backlash. Unless she starts working tirelessly with charities and isn’t know as the pr0n princess who lives off her country. He’s so dashing, but his history makes my VD alarm go off and i’m less attracted.
Really? Whatever you do, don’t move to Britain. There’s a couple there who will give you apoplexy!
LOL
Hah!
The grass is indeed greener on Matty’s side.
Thank God for that comment. Look, I don’t want to offend anyone, and I do realise not all readers are Americans but I get the majority are. It’s my impression that the American public is fascinated by European royalty, much, MUCH more than Europeans are. And the most boring self-important people et the biggest promotion somehow. Victoria has always come across as very fake to me, more like a “let’s-pretend-I’m-an-ordinary-girl-who-has-real-life-problems” person. Madeleine may be a typical “life is a party” girl but at least she’s not trying sooooooo hard to sell herself as one of the crowd.
Compared to other royal families the Swedish one is relatively low-key, but honestly they are not AS popular as you may think. A similar thing is happening with the British royal family, and trust me the average British has more important things to think about than Kate-let’s-keep-spending-money-I-never-earned-Middleton. But hey, if you want juicy gossip there are many monarchies around the globe, each has skeletons in their closets, spice it up a little dear Cele|Bitchy 🙂
Meanwhile, a moment of silence please for Kate Middleton who has been MIA for some weeks now.
And right on schedule, there’s an engagement announcement. With all these caveats about how she’s got to be home for William in the evening. *insert as many massive eye rolls as you want here*
She’s been papped out shopping without George, but of course cannot be away from George to work (hey wait, they’re “normal” and don’t have a nanny etc.). Queue the obligatory gala evening event to quiet the masses before Bill and Kate slip off to Mustique for the annual Middleton holiday.
This always happens. She will not work while William is away (even before George) unless the Queen or Charles request her presence (aka get off her tush). She ways goes MIA, but is seen shopping or at a salon without fail nearly daily. And when she returns home it’s always to her parent’s home. Again, without fail. Even when William was in the RAF she always stayed with her parents instead of her cottage.
I might get flack for this, but i’ll say it anyways. If William wasn’t known to have a wandering dong for the ladies i’d think Kate was his beard. Without question.
Sigh. So why does he get to be Prince Daniel? Isn’t it technically Prince Victoria? The way Kate is technically Princess William?
Not technically, but yea. I understand it better than I can explain it.
from what i can gather from past Celebitchy royal posts, the short form of it is: different country different rule.
but the rule of thumb is: the Monarch allows it.
Daniel was made Prince on his wedding day, because King Carl XVI Gustav allows that to happen. He “decrees” that Daniel will be HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Vastergotland upon marriage. Should his (great)-grandfather was still alive (also Gustav but a different number), not only does Daniel would not get “Prince”, Victoria might not be Crown Princess because apparently that old Gustav looked down upon non-balanced marriage or some kind. almost all his children were stripped off their titles for not marrying royals. (even aristos weren’t good enough apparently).
other West/North European countries outside the UK seems to be lax-er in giving the title Prince/Princess the spouse of Blood Prince/Princesses. E.g. Prince Joachim’s two wives are automatically granted HRH Princess titles: Princess Alexandra and Princess Marie. The wives of the two Dutch princes (brothers of the current king) are HRH Princess Mabel and HRH Princess Laurentien (not Princess Friso and Princess Constantijn). in Belgium, the wife of Prince Laurent is HRH Princess Claire, not Princess Laurent.
in the UK, the Queen can choose to give a non-royal born wife of a blood prince her own Princess title to wear, either through Letters Patent or as courtesy (e.g. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester). even Princess Marina who is a born Princess of Greece and Denmark, after her marriage to Duke of Kent was known Duchess of Kent (or Princess George; because of course the Paternalistic law means the wife takes on the husband’s name and title, unless you’re the Heir Apparent), until she finally elected to use her birthright title to become Princess Marina of Greece & Denmark again (notice she’s not Princess of the UK).
also, Princess Alice of Battenberg (born princess, great-granddaughter of Queen Vic), the mother of Prince William became Princess Andrew when she married Prince Andrew of Greece.
even Prince Philip abandoned his Greek&Danish royal titles (he was Prince Philip of Greece & Denmark) and simply becomes a “lowly” Lieutentant Philip Mountbatten (“a commoner” in parentheses), until his wife finally granted the title Prince of the UK in 19-something can’t remember.
so i guess, unless the Queen allows Kate her own Princess title, she will always be Princess William.
caveat: i might be wrong, but after a year of stalking Celebitchy royal posts, i think i got the gist of it FINALLY! i struggled mightily to understand at first too.
i’m sure the kindly ladies on the board will correct me where i erred.
*edit: not mother of Prince William, but Prince Philip. sorry for that.
lower case deb has the gist in a nutshell — different rules for different countries. So you can’t extrapolate the rules from one country’s monarchy to another — it doesn’t work that way.
Another interesting difference: in Russia you were created an IH Grand Duke or Grand Duchess in your own right upon marriage.
Love Vickan and Dan. What a pain to have to drag a cast around to these engagements, though.
Kaiser, I love that you are our new royal correspondent.
I don’t think Daniel has grumpy face. I think that May be just his natural look, lol! This man has had major health issues. He had a kidney transplant before they got married and has to be on a lot of meds because of it. He stated that’s why he has to where glasses because of renal issue. I think they are lovely and seem so down to earth compared to what we see with different royal families. He seems to adore Victoria and they both are smitten with little Estelle..
